retirement party that was held at the Ballard Golf & Country Club.
Having colleagues parents, students, former students and friends
stop by was very rewarding.
We would also like to take this time to thank all the secretaries, bus drivers, custodial
staff, associates, nurses, teachers and administrators that have made our jobs workable
over these many years because we are a Ballard Family.
Our appreciation to students and parents for their support and time given to make school
and the extra activities so pleasurable.
And to thank our communities and businesses for their support over these many years.
The memories we have of Ballard will stay with us for years to
come as we move on to a new and exciting career change.

Middle School
Middle School National History Day Competition
On April 25, Gabry Watkins, Ellie Twedt, Jenna Hernandez, Logan Conley, and Cheryl Blackmer
competed at the state level for the National History Day competition is Des Moines. In this
competition, the girls researched a topic that supported the theme, Explore, Encounter, Exchange
and created a project. At the competition, they were interviewed and judged. All five did an amazing
job and represented Ballard Middle School well. Jenna was a finalist for her exhibit over the Triangle
Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Ellie won Immigration History Award with her performance over Norwegian
Immigration.
We are excited to announce that Cheryl was one of two students from Iowa selected as a national
finalist to compete in Washington D.C. with her paper over Edward Jenner and the smallpox vaccination. In June, Cheryl will travel to Washington D.C. and compete at the University of Maryland for four
days. Here, she'll once again meet with judges over her paper as well as participate in activities on
campus and in Washington D.C.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
8th Grade students received a pin and a certificate in recognition of outstanding academic
excellence. These students have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA from their 7th grade year
through the first semester of their 8th grade year. This award is given to 8th grade students
completing the last year of middle school.

Tdap Vaccination Required for all Incoming 7th Grade Students
The Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Immunization, completed the administration rules process to require
tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine for students enrolling in 7th grade. Tdap vaccine star ts to wane after
six years leaving kids vulnerable to pertussis. The time to boost their protection is now as we have seen an increase in pertussis
outbreaks in recent years.

August 1 – 5, 2016
For five days, Iowa’s private colleges and universities are inviting you and your parents to come
explore their campuses, visit with professors, meet coaches, hear what current students have to say, and
learn about all their academic and social opportunities. Variety is the spice of life, so check out up to ten
different colleges during that week, compare notes and decide which college fits you. Tours are
scheduled twice each day at each campus: 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The PSAT test will be given at Ballard
High School on Wednesday, October
19, 2016. This test is
important for
juniors because it is the first step in qualifying to be a National Merit Scholar.
In early September, information regarding the PSAT
test will be provided to all juniors. Students who do
not sign up for the PSAT in September will not be
guaranteed a test.
2016 Summer Drivers’ Education
Class started Tuesday, June 7, 2016. Class meets
Tuesday through Thursday mornings from 6:30 – 9:00
a.m. in the high school 2nd floor—room 298. Driving
partners and drive times will be assigned during the first
classroom time. Students need to bring their current
valid driving permit along with a pencil and paper to
class. Some student drive times may extend into July and
August.

September 22 at 6:30. We will be following
the same parade route as last year. It will
start at the middle school, take a left onto
Main Street, take another left onto
Lynwood, which will turn into Ballard
Drive and end at the high school. If you are

The first annual WiSE STEM Fest will be held on September 17, 2016. Students of all ages and families are welcome
to attend this event designed to encourage interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through a variety of
experiences including speakers, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and interacting with role models.

On May 2, the 21th Annual Scholarship Award Night, 88 seniors were awarded $550 each for postsecondary education and training. We couldn't have done this without overwhelming support from
the Ballard Community, including the Ballard Schools administration and staff.
