Mission
Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold!
Girls’ Bill of Rights
Girls have the right to take risks, to strive freely, and to take pride in success.
Girls have the right to express themselves with originality and enthusiasm.
Girls have the right to be themselves and to resist gender stereotypes.
Girls have the right to prepare for interesting work and economic independence.
Girls have the right to appreciate and accept their bodies.
Girls have the right to have confidence in themselves and to be safe in the world.
The Girls Inc. Experience
The Girls Inc. Experience gives girls a place to belong. It’s a pro-girl, girls-only space where girls
can make new friends and try new things. Girls learn skills, share ideas, and find their voice. It’s
a place to discover science and math are really cool, a place to be mentored and mentor others,
a place where girls’ self-confidence can soar. The Girls Inc. Experience is where the whole girl –
body, mind, and spirit – becomes strong, smart, and bold.
Pro-Girl & Girls Only
Girls Inc. is a place where girls can be confident about who they are and feel empowered to
become the woman they dream to be.
On October 11, 2013 we celebrated the International Day of the Girl with a March on Main Street
in Fort Worth, Texas. Over 300 women and girls chanted “Strong, Smart, and Bold” for 9 blocks
and received proclamations on the steps of the courthouse.
Mentoring Relationships
Every girl needs her own cheerleader and confidant! Trusting, mentoring relationships with Girls
Inc. staff and volunteers give girls the confidence to trust their abilities and take risks.
“My mentor had a major influence on me. Because of her, I changed my career
goal to get a masters in social work so I can help others just like she
helped me.” – Brenda
Research-Based Curricula
Girls Inc. programs are based upon relevant, field-tested and nationally research-based curricula
that confronts the serious needs of girls. Our programs give girls the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes they need to succeed in their everyday lives and grow into confident women.
Programs with a Purpose
Our programs are created with a desired outcome in mind…Strong, Smart, and Bold girls!
Programming is focused on girls’ needs and provides exposure to a wide variety of experiences
and options that girls might not experience otherwise.
Reading Literacy
The Reading Literacy Initiative for K-3rd grade girls builds literacy skills and fosters a love of
reading. Girls Inc. is in a unique position to reinforce the academic skills taught during the school
day, while also building the life skills that girls need to thrive in school and beyond. 142 girls
participated in the Reading Literacy Initiative in 2013 in Arlington ISD.
Research shows that youth who have lived in poverty are 3X more likely to drop out or not
graduate on time. If they don’t read well, that jumps to 6X as likely.
Investing Matters
Girls Inc. girls at Trimble Technical High School are getting hands-on experience in making
financial investments by creating and managing a $36,000 portfolio over the course of a year.
Through a partnership with ING, the Investing Matters program teaches girls the skills of
investing, saving, budgeting, and philanthropy in personal finance.
This year in Girls Inc. Economic Literacy Programs, 1,449 girls (ages 5-18) learn to manage
money, invest, and begin to develop an appreciation for global economics.
Only 53% of women have the confidence to invest, 83% of
men say they are confident investors.
Interactive Activities
Hands-on activities make lessons fun! An added bonus – Girls retain the knowledge that they
are learning when they experiment, play games, and get messy!
1,918 girls participated in Operation SMART, where girls develop enthusiasm for and skills in
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through hands-on activities, girls
explore, ask questions, persist, and solve problems.
"My dad's tablet was not working and he wanted to throw it away. I used
what I learned at SMART Camp and I fixed his tablet. He was impressed and I
feel proud!" – Vero, 7th Grade
Sustained Exposure
Girls who participate in Girls Inc. programs over several years build a toolbox of skills for success. For young girls, that can mean learning and practicing literacy skills two hours per week and
participating in Girls Inc. prevention and leadership programs during or after school. And
after days, weeks, and months at Girls Inc., we see their knowledge and confidence sky-rocket!
For older girls, sustained exposure can be measured in years. Years of Girls Inc. programs and
mentorship show in the self-assured stride of our Girls Inc. scholars!
2013 College Shower
The Second Annual College Shower provided dorm and school supplies for college-bound
seniors. A supply drive by United Way of Tarrant County and the efforts of College Shower
Committee Chair, Ellen Ray, and the Girls Inc. Women of Influence leveled the playing field for
girls on their first day of college. The event also raised funds for the Girls Inc. of Tarrant County
scholarship fund for future Girls Inc. scholars! Girls develop skills to stay in school and graduate – 100% of our high
school seniors graduated in 2013.
Girls prepare for their future – 90% of our 2013 graduates planned to
attend college or join the military.
