Our Mission: At Planet Bike, we dream about the day when all cities and towns
are safer and more convenient places for cyclists. Because we believe in the potential
of the bicycle to improve the health of individuals, communities and the planet, we
donate 25% of our profits to organizations that promote bicycle use.
Over the past year and across North
America, we are proud to have once again
been involved with many grassroots
bicycle programs which are helping to
transform our communities into safe and
convenient places to bike.
We continued to work closely with the
alliance for biking and walking to
seize upon the winds of change that

are stirring due to growing concerns about
climate change, oil independence, and
quality of life issues. Our support has helped
to fund advocacy advance grants and
scholarships which supported fledgling
advocacy organizations and important projects
stretching from New York to San Francisco.
Nationally, we continued our major support for
trips for kids and we became more deeply
involved with the national center of
safe routes to school. We also continued
our long standing support of IMBA and their
national mountain bike patrol.
In california, we provided startup lights so that
the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition’s city of
lights program could reach out to the immigrant
biking community. We again sponsored mayor
daley’s bicycle ambassador program in
Chicago and the philadelphia Bike Ambassadors. In
miami, we provided a matching grant to green
mobility network to conduct a campaign to
complete the m-path, Miami-Dade County’s most
important multi-use path. North of the border, we
sponsored the tour de greenbelt to highlight
sustainable transportation, recreation and agriculture
in the greenbelt surrounding toronto.
Locally, we have dedicated our time and energy
to help make Madison a platinum rated city by
championing a comprehensive safe routes to
school initiative and helping to inaugurate the city’s
Ride The Drive ciclovia event. In an effort to help
make ripon college’s campus more sustainable,
we were again a major sponsor of their velorution
program. And, our continued support of the bicycle
federation of wisconsin helped maintain
Wisconsin’s bicycle-friendly reputation.

closing the gap
Green Mobility Network is a young non-profit with the mission to make Miami-Dade
County a healthier, more livable community by promoting bicycling, running, and walking
for daily transportation, leisure, and fitness. In its short history, the Green Mobility
Network has been a key leader in Miami’s efforts to improve conditions for bicyclist and
pedestrians by crafting the city’s first bicycle master plan, orchestrating six successful
“Bike Miami Days,” and beginning the development of a Safe Routes to School initiative.
In July 2009, Planet Bike awarded Green Mobility Network a $30,000 matching grant to
help them succeed with their “Complete the M-Path” campaign. The Mobility Path, or
M-Path, is Miami-Dade County’s most important multi-use path. Currently, however, there
exists a 1.25 mile “Dadeland Gap” which prevents bicyclists and pedestrians from safely
and easily connecting with the area’s wider network of paths. Once the goal of closing
the gap is realized, there will exist a seamless 30-mile bicycle-pedestrian corridor running
from downtown Miami to the county’s southern border.

The immigrant community in Los Angeles has a strong bicycle presence on the streets of
L.A. Nevertheless, there has been growing concern for these bicyclists’ safety because
many immigrant cyclists are unaware of traffic laws and ride at night without lights.
The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) launched the bilingual City of Lights
pilot program in December 2008 with the goal to provide the L.A. Immigrant population
with bicycle lights and basic information in Spanish on safe and legal biking.

and underrepresented cyclists in Los Angeles.”

Planet Bike donated the first 100 lights to help the program get on its feet. With
many lessons learned from the pilot, a second round was conducted in March 2009 in
partnership with the Central American Resource Center’s (CARECEN) day laborer center.
According to LACBC’s Urban Programs Coordinator, Allison Mannos, “Planet Bike’s initial
seed money and commitment to our campaign have helped us reach and empower some
of the most passionate and underrepresented cyclists in Los Angeles.”
The program has been well received by the immigrant community, and LACBC is
developing a bilingual version of the League of American Bicyclists’ Traffic Skills 101
class. They are training bilingual volunteers from the community to conduct outreach at
major destinations in immigrant neighborhoods.
