or the past nineteen years we have collaborated in many meaningful bicycle advocacy initiatives across North America. This
year was no exception as we continued to partner with advocates on key national initiatives as well as many locally-targeted
programs that focus on getting more people on bikes.
On the national level, we continued our support of the fourth annual Youth Bike Summit. The three day gathering attracted spirited
participation from nearly 500 youth and adults from 25 states and three countries who are at the center of a growing movement
to develop and inspire the next generation of bicycle advocates. Collectively, the group explores how kids can create positive social
change and how bicycling can be a part of a sustainable future.
Again this year we teamed up with the Adventure Cycling Association to lend a hand with their “Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It.”
Campaign that raised over $147,000 for the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS). The funds will be used to establish a network of
interstate routes that connect America’s cities, suburbs and rural areas. When completed, the USBRS will be the largest official
cycling route network on the planet!

On the local level, we are energized by the fact that communities across the country are embracing bicycles and building infrastructure
to make our cities and towns more livable. In an effort to broaden this progress, we supported fifteen Earn-a-Bike programs
across the country helping to empower kids to fix, earn, use and enjoy bicycles. We have continued our support of WE Bike NYC.
Their programs have motivated women across the five boroughs to begin biking by educating them on bike safety and maintenance.
Additionally, we provided lights to fifteen “Be Bright” initiatives which raise awareness about safe cycling and provide free lights to
those in need.
For nearly two decades, we are proud of the part we have played to help make our communities more bicycle-friendly. More
importantly, we are continually fueled by the energy, commitment and intelligence of the countless individuals and organizations
who work tirelessly to improve conditions for bicyclists and, as a direct result, improve the health of individuals, communities and
the planet.

ach year we select four individuals who are passionate
and dedicated to using their bicycles as transportation
and honor them as Planet Bike SuperCommuter.
Among the chosen few have been a professor, a bike shop
mechanic, a lawyer, a farmer, a doctor and even the drummer
from Blue Oyster Cult.
In the last twelve months we’ve gotten to know some fantastic
bicycle ambassadors. They ride through every season, in all
types of weather day and night. They choose the simplicity,
health and pleasure of bicycling. Some go beyond the ride and
work to improve the bicycle climate in their community. This is
certainly true of Super Commuter David Pulsipher.
David has called Chicago his home for the last 3 years, but it was
his years attending grad school in Los Angeles that solidified
his faith in commuting by bike. He was waiting at a bus transfer
point when he saw someone ride by on a bike. A pragmatist
at heart, David grasped the opportunity to save money, time,
and stay fit (not to mention have fun). Within a week he was at
a bike shop getting a new bike for his commute and he hasn't
looked back since.
These days it's a Surly Long Haul Trucker that gets David through his riding; a smart choice given the bike's enormous adaptability. David is grateful to
have a wife that encourages his daily 27 mile round-trip commute. It takes 2 hours out of his day but that valuable time allows him to decompress from
the day. He arrives home feeling refreshed, happy and full of enough energy for 3 rambunctious boys!
Twelve of the 13 miles of David's commute are comprised of bike lanes, some of that being buffered or even protected bike lane. It is those amenities that
help encourage bike riding in Chicago. But David also praises the plentiful residential streets that connect schools, parks and other destinations he bikes
to with his family. He has even started a branch of Kidical Mass in Northwest Chicago to introduce other families to the joys of riding in his community.
David cites physical and mental health, saving money and having fun as motivation to start commuting by bike. However, he's found an unforeseen
benefit; seeing his city at the ground level. "There are tons of tiny thing I'd never notice in a car," he says, "like the funny cactus on a Mexican restaurant,
interesting font choices for the local bakery's signage, and smelling the Blommer Chocolate factory downtown. I love all of it!
