STOCKTON—The California State Queens was held August 16-17 at West Lane Bowl in Stockton. Tennelle remained undeafeated throughout the field of 30 in the double-elimination finals and triumphed over Leanne Hulsenberg in the championship match shooting 277 for the title. Along with the title, Tennelle earns an entry into the 2009 USBC National Queens event and an entry into the 2009 California State Queens in Orange County. In the finals, Tammy Lewis earned the high game bonus award with a 278 and Tennelle took the high two-game series award with a 535. In the Last Chance qualifier held just prior to the finals, Jeanette Menacho was top qualifier taking the high series bonus award with a 1,435 six game set and high game of 280. We will have some modifications to the event next year such as seeded qualifiers and cutting to the top 16. We need everyone’s help in getting the ladies (youth and adult) to participate and see who is the best female bowler in California! Download the final bracket results and qualifying scores online at www.CalUSBC.com. Entries will also be available for the 2009 Queens event in November. Throughout this article you will see various employee stats, delicious scores, and a good heaping of overly abundant sarcasm. Si. Su. Here we go: PINZ ADULTS Gabe (mechanic) is our favorite backend worker. He digs deep and fixes the problem no matter how LONG it may take. He can fix anything with precision and time. Yet, it’s our bowlers who do the job with less than three hours each week. Bowler of the Week: Oddly enough an old gem from the past has been polished and Mike Lee has emerged as our Bowler of the Week. This former employee was a great worker and a better friend who has chosen to move on to greener pastures (they don’t get better than Pinz) and now has bowled a great series. He bowled a 279 game and a 707 series this past Tuesday. Thanks for keeping our Labor Day theme alive. Great bowling by a very nice guy Jeff Taino whose 235/258 would have won most matches. He is a four time Champion and almost got 5 except for Cash’s heroics. Jeff is one of the Good Guys. Great Bowling! A good Guy for sure is Sun Sundara who did so well in 3rd. Great Bowling Sun!! Tourney Hi Qualifiers were “Ace” Cordero +178 (men) and Natalie Perenishko led the gals at +195. Both get paid entries. The doubles were topped by Ace Codero and Marvyn Galsim 1508 good for $200. In 2nd “Ace” Cordero and Jamescart Alarcio 1499 Ace hit it big in the doubles. We paid a nice 19 places and $1,910 in the event. The Match Game was again Matched at 190 by four of our bowlers, David Emrich, Ace Cordero, Marv Crowder and Tres Catalasan. They got $364 each. The Match Series was won by three of our Men- Roland Escares, Hermie Lebaquin, and Bedell Vasquez. They got a nice $332 each. Only $2 to enter. Michael Kong was last up in the 3-6-9 roll off but missed on shot 4. We will have a $2,000 pot this Week in our Big event at CAL Bowl. Demetrius Cash hails from Costa Mesa, and one of our faithful members. He used a Clash drilled by Brandon at Jewel City. He is very well liked in our club, and he thanks Grandmother and family, and all the Members at the ABTA, Team Cash-Linda, Juan Carlos, Robert and the crew and Desi and Hazel for support and the Hot Tamale Train. Jeff Taino is from Chino Hills, married to Cindy and a son Justin. He used a Twisted Fury drilled by Joe Staton at Upland Bowl. He thanks ABTA Staff,Minh Dang, El President and Buth Obrar for support. Sun Sundara is from Diamond Bar and used an Eraser drilled by Ben Mach at the Westminster Lanes. He has four kids, Billy, Bob, Chrystal, and Linda. He thanks the ABTA Staff and Bowling Square for the fine event, and friends for support. Thanks to Cheryl GM and, and The whole staff who are so nice and helpful there. We will return. Thanks to Eddie for the fair Lane Condition. Demetrius ARCADIA—Demetrius Cash was the best as he won his second ABTA Title in fine style topping a field of 255 bowlers to take home a $2,200 First Prize. Our return to Bowling Square was just great and 255 entrants produced nice cut scores of +62 for the men and +38 for our fine ladies. Due to the nice turnout we had 63 Bowlers make the Semi Finals/Finals. Super Seniors added were Esther Tambio, Mike Bousquet, and Rico Cayton. The bowlers took to the semis and we saw Jeff Taino top the field with a big +166. He would sit out and bowl for the title. Angel Chau was right behind at +153. He would enter in the second round of the finals. It took a nice +76 to make the top 16 including the 3 and+53 for the three guaranteed women. Losers in round one were Patricia Lin, Kmel Cunanan, Du Quach, Chris Marquez, Rich Aquino, Leny Uruttia and Danny Eguilos. They got checks of $117.50. Round two saw Je Je Gabriel, Deb Sanders, Cleve Johnson and Ace Cordero lose out. They were 6-9th places and $132.50 each. Round three heated up with Demetrius Cash downing Angel Chau 219-205. Sun Sundara got to Billy Chao 244-203. So Billy and Angel were 4th and 5th and $142.50 each with Sun and Cash to bowl for the right to advance to the title game vs Jeff Taino. This game again went to Cash as he struck often in a 244170 win over the likable Sundara who lost his shot. Sun was 3rd and $220 with fine bowling! The title game was on. Both bowlers were on their game. Both had the front 3. Jeff then spared and doubled but he still had a problem as Cash had the front 6 strikes. Jeff spared twice and Cash now had front 9!! A possible 300 in the title game but he then got no break and slammed a 10 Pin and finished with an amazing 279/297 win and his second title. What a performance by 0ne of the Good Guys! Cash had a Special ABTA Shirt with our Recently Deceased Director Simon Rojas’ name on the back. It was such a tribute to Simon and his friends and family . Great Bowl- Cash enters the archives as our latest Champion. TS S PO UAD E D SI T SQ S MO It’s Time to Celebrate The Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT), the oldest and largest amateur bowling club in the United States will be celebrating its 31st anniversary this weekend at Westminster Lanes. The ABT has paid out more than $177 million in those 31 years. The ABT, a USBC approved tournament, was created by founder, Ken Daleiden, to give the amateur bowler an opportunity to compete in a tournament atmosphere similar to today’s Professional Bowlers Association events. His vision is being carried on by new owner and national director, Myron Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell, based in Salt Lake City, will be on hand this weekend to meet and greet the many bowlers who have supported the Orange County Branch in the past 31 years. Orange County Director, Rick Niedermayer, was recently asked with so many tournament clubs available, why join the Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT)? His response was that the club is the oldest tournament club in the United States with branches in 22 different cities. ABT offers a minimum of two tournaments per month. The club also guarantees a minimum of $500 for 1st place regardless of the number of entries. The ABT is one of the few USBC approved tournaments here in Orange County. Many of the different clubs model their rules and formats after the ABT and that is quite flattering. One of the biggest differences is that the ABT is a national tournament and offers their members two national tournaments; one near the end of March and the other near the end of July each year. Sponsors Storm & Roto-Grip Products as well as host Sam’s Town Hotel Casino and Bowling Center add money to each of the tournaments’ prize fund. These national tournaments are split into two divisions, the Classic Division for bowlers with averages of 189 and under and the Masters Division for bowlers with averages from 190 to 225. The 2009 Spring Nationals event, scheduled for March 31st through April 5th, will feature a 1st place prize of over $53,000 in the Classic Division and $25,000 in the Masters Division. That is 78,000 reasons to bowl the ABT. The ABT in Orange County recently introduced a truly unique rewards program, which will pay the ABT member to bowl in the weekly tournaments. THAT’S RIGHT; ABT WILL PAY YOU TO BOWL THEIR TOURNAMENTS! ! ! The Bowling Rewards plan, recently unveiled in Orange County, offers ABT members cash back rewards on each of their entry fees, cash back on their prize checks, as well as Bowling Rewards cash for referring new members to the ABT. ABT Orange County invites you to come out and experience the ABT here in Orange County this weekend, with one squad on Thursday and one squad Friday evening, as well as four squads each on Saturday and Sunday. The final two qualifying squads will be on Monday morning. Please look at our ad in this paper for squad times. We hope to see you there. RESULTS OF PACIFIC COAST DEAF SENIORS MASTERS LONNIE JONES WINS HIS 3rd DEAF SENIOR MASTERS RANCHO CUCAMONGA... The Don I Miller, Sr. Pacific Coast Deaf Senior Masters took a big drop from 46 entries in last year’s event at Denver to a mere 24 men last Memorial Day week-end at Brunswick Deer Creek Bowl. The qualifying format required all 24 aged 60 and over bowlers use their scratch all-events scores bowled in the Pacific Coast Deaf tournament for the top 16 double elimination one game match play. The top qualifier was 181 ave. Los Angeles senior Robert Taylor, who rolled 572 in team, 583 in singles and 558 in doubles for 1713 total. The eventual winner Lonnie Jones. Jr. was 3 pins behind with 1710 with 647 in team, 553 in singles and 510 in doubles. The 16th qualifier was William Kalk, Canada with 1479 scratch 9 games. Top senior Taylor moved into 3rd round by defeating Canadian Kalk and 9th qualifier Sammy Sain, Las Vegas respectively, then lost by a pin 173-174 to the 4th qualifier from Las Vegas Pete Morreale. At the bottom (16th) bracket Jones, Jr., a two time Senior champion (1993 & 2000) beat in order 15th qualifier Jim Mohr, Simi Valley, 10th qualifier Howard Sultan, Moreno Valley and 14th qualifier Gardy Rodgers, Los Angeles to get in 4th round against Morreale. Prior to beating Taylor, Morreale had defeated 13th qualifier and former champion John Segafredo, Granada Hills and 5th qualifier David Thordsen. Then Jones, Jr. beat Morreale in a close match 170-167 to be the top seed in the championship round and Morreale dropped down to the loser’s bracket. Meanwhile in the losers’ 4th round Taylor ousted Rodgers in a close match 193-191 and then Morreale eliminated Taylor 186-179 to get in the semi-finals, In the loser’ bracket Thordsen moved on by ousting in order, Sain, 11th qualifier Bert Smith, No.CA, and 6th qualifier Dennis Kaufman to get in the semi-finals against Morreale. Thordsen, then eliminated Morreale t get in the title battle against resting Jones, Jr. In the title match Thordsen gave Jones, Jr. his first loss,176-156 but Jones. Jr. rebounded by beating Thordsen 190-166 to become the first deaf senior to win 3 titles. Jones, Jr. got $300.00 and trophy, Thordsen received $150 for his 2nd runner-up finish and Morreale got $100 for 3rd. The rest of qualifiers cashed down to 16th place. Although this writer was not there, he contended that two of the qualifiers were among the 4 bowlers who did not pay their all-events fees in order to get their qualifying scores counted. Therefore these two should not be allowed to compete in this Senior Masters. The PCDBA officers will pay close attention to this matter in future. Don’t forget to get there a bit early- new membership forms must be filled out and we want to start on time! Bidwell Strikes For Two Titles in Two Days After 5 years of being “the best bowler who doesn’t have a title”, Devin Bidwell struck double gold striking his way to a Tournament of Non-Champions victory on Saturday and following it up with a Tournament of Champions victory on Sunday. Bidwell went from “Non-Champion” status to “Two-Time Champion” in less than 24 hours! In the ToNC, Bidwell led nearly wire-towire starting with a 278 out of the gate and never looking back, averaging over 233 to qualify in the top-seed position. In the finals, James Hawkins had the hot hand taking down 4th seed Cory Koyanagi and 2nd seed Ricky Brown before falling to the red-hot Bidwell in three games. Then on Sunday, it was Jeff Spiesman electrifying the crowd with multiple honor scores and averaging over 245 for his 16 games and locking up the top-seed for the three-man finals. First, 3rd seed Matt Jones fell to 2nd seed Devin Bidwell to set up the match between Jeff Spiesman and Bidwell for the title. An ailing Spiesman fell to Bidwell in the final enabling Devin to rack up his back-to-back two-titlesin-two-days feat! Congratulations to Devin on some fantastic bowling! Spiesman, Jones, Bidwell Rack Up Honor Scores Jeff Spiesman showed why he is one of the top bowlers in Southern California by putting up some tremendous numbers at the Tournament of Champions. The 10-time champion strung together games of 300-278-269 for a humongous 847 series then followed it up 2 games later with another perfect 300 in matchplay. Matt Jones lit up the lanes with a perfect 300 game on Sunday adding another perfecto to his Canoga resume. Devin Bidwell excited the crowd with a nice 289 game en route to his win at the Tournament of Non-Champions then returned for a 258-259-288-805 set on Sunday morning. Nice bowling all of you! John Conway is Top Gun in Rocky Marsh Doubles by Joy McGregor ANAHEIM—John Conway, we don’t call him “Big-Bad” for nothing, was fixated on the job at hand when he strolled into HIS domain Friday morning. He took control and no prisoners as he found his target and aimed at those nasty, taunting pins 60 feet away. He let loose and fired consistent games of 235-247 and 246 for 728 and added a 259 for good measure to boast a 987 set. John is truly “Top Gun” in his sport and “Top Dawg” in Rocky Marsh as he stands alone at a 229 summer average, a high series at 999 and even tied for high game at 298. There ain’t nothin’ left folks ... he proves his maple moxy week after week - I vote Conway for President!! Super Sub Tony Hale, better known as “Too-Tuff”, showed he also has the secret ingredient for maple moxy and earned his “Star” tossing 258-240 and 233 for 731 and added 214 to tally 945. A rose by any other name ... Hall of Famer A. Rose Williams is our featured lady bowler this week. Rose showed her style and proved her worth on games of 195-267-203 and 204 to post a fine 869.
