fter three days of intensive training and a summer of hard work
from Chair Stephanie Lord and CoChair Ryan Brideau the team was
ready. On September 3rd, 2010 the
UNB Fredericton Campus was buzzing as our group of 98 volunteers
called the “Redshirts” welcomed over
1,000 new students to campus.
We kicked the first night off with our
massive O-Week Opening Ceremonies. Over 1,200 togas were handed
out to all first year students and volunteers. The evening included numerous house challenges, cheer-offs,
inflatable games, a toga decorating
station, live entertainment and of
course the Olympic Flame.
Entitled "O-Lympiads 2010" we held
events such as the O-Week Opening Ceremonies, 2010 Togapalooza,

Brock also hosted its annual grape
stomp. Over 200 students came together to stomp on hundreds of
pounds of locally grown grapes. The
grapes are donated by local vineyards.
The event takes place on campus in
early September. Awards are given in
different categories: best dressed; the
messiest; and the best teams overall.
The events start with the stomping of
the grapes, but it quickly turns into a
sloppy stomp war and a slip n slide.
The Niagara region is known for its
vineyards and this is a great event to
celebrate the culture.

KICK OFF TO A GREAT YEAR AT CONESTOGA

Conestoga Students Inc
C
onestoga’s first week back to
school went off without a hitch!
Every student was busy getting their
parking passes, textbooks, finding
their classrooms, and looking for
some fun activities on campus! Conestoga Students Inc. had a great first
week back, with this year’s week theme
“Break Free”. Each day was jammed
packed full of events and activities
going on inside and outside the C.S.I
Student Sanctuary. Activities included
giving away an iPad a day to a student,
the annual student agenda giveaway,
and local DJ’s from Molly Blooms in
Kitchener. The Student Sanctuary also
hosted a free comedy show, with Daren Rose and Eddie Della Siepe, which
packed the room to capacity. We also
hosted our first annual Anything But
Clothes pub night, which sold out in
two days, and had many scrabbling to
figure out what to wear! The week concluded with a FREE pancake breakfast
with musical entertainment featuring
2010 - 2011, ISSUE 1
Levon. The breakfast brought out a
line of over 600 students. There was a
lot of excitement from students from
the wide range of activities happening
on campus!
The annual Pond Party was filled with
over three thousand students who
came out to enjoy a free BBQ, and entertainment from Mandippal Jandu,
Darrelle London, Peter Katz, and Rob
Szabo. There were the odd showers
that day, but it did not discourage students from all the free stuff that local
businesses had to hand out, and the
free food from Conestoga Students
Inc.
Finally, over one thousand students
purchased tickets to the fall concert
featuring Alexisonfire. Those who
bought a concert ticket at CSI Self
Serve were also given a ballot for a
chance to win backstage passes to
meet the band, which included photos with the band and an autographed
poster. The three lucky and very excited students who won the "Meet
And Greet" were Amy Langer, Mike
Cowling and Sam Strong. Phone calls
to these students, led to screaming excitement!
Alexisonfire played an amazing outdoor set for our excited students and
friends. The roar from the crowd filled
the air with exhilaration, with the odd
student crowd surfing to the front!
The grassy backyard of the school
was transformed into a live concert
area, with a huge stage, loud pumping
speakers and beaming lights. Despite
the drizzly weather, fans stuck it out to
watch the band rock the stage. Opening acts consisted of The Dirty Nil,
The Balconies and Mockingbird Wish
Me Luck.
Students of Conestoga can also expect to see other major events, such
as comedian Trixx, Randy and Lahey
from the Trailer Park Boys, Pumpkin
Carving Contest, singer/song writers
as well as Toga and Halloween Pub
Nights, Oktoberfest and MORE eating competitions!

ALGONQUIN KICKS IT BIG TIME
Ken MacLeod
Algonquin Students' Association
his year Algonquin has been
lucky enough to host some
amazing talent on campus, and our
students have supported the shows
100%. We’ve had some of the best attendance numbers on campus to date,
and things don’t appear to be slowing
down.
known as GonqFest saw The Balconies, and Mockingbird Wish Me
Luck play strong sets to prepare the
over-capacity crowd for headliners
ALEXISONFIRE. Other outdoor
events included a movie (by FreshAir
Cinema) and a Courtyard Carnival
(by HART Entertainment). Although
we seemed to constantly be fighting
off the rain, all events were a HUGE
success.
New this year on campus are educational workshops that supplement
our entertainment programming. The
first event saw 20+ students (many
with guitars in hand) take part in
an intimate guitar workshop hosted
by Antione Dufour, Ewan Dobson,
and John Horrocks. An hour later
50 more people joined the group to
watch an exciting guitar demonstration put on by the three artists.
Orientation was highlighted by two
amazing guest speakers on campus:
Skate4Cancer’s Rob Dyer, and Me
To We Michel Chikwanine. Both
shared their message with our students, and both were great to work
with. Our large outdoor concert
The Observatory, our campus bar,
hosted two sell-out concerts in the
first week of school. Mother Mother (with opener Whale Tooth) and
LIGHTS (with opener Michou) put
on amazing shows and were so easy
to work with.
In the next few weeks we are set to
host UFC’s Wanderlei Silva, Talk Sex
with Sue Johanson, and a night of
music featuring Fred Penner. Here’s
hoping that the year continues like it
started.

E3 Music Festival – University of Windsor
Todd Shearon
University of Windsor
E
3 Music Festival kicked off the
University of Windsor’s 2010
Welcome Week with a bang, drawing
over 1400 people to enjoy a day of live
music before the school year officially
began.
It was a simple idea. Host a concert
featuring 10 – 15 local bands, while
releasing a CD compilation of their
music to promote to students. This
grew into a monster event which the
University has never seen before. The
goal was to build a new audience for
the bands, while at the same time stimulating attendance for live music at the
pub through the course of the school
year.
The event became the perfect branding element for our events website as
well as emphasizing a few other key
2010 - 2011, ISSUE 1
points - Entertainment * Energy * Excitement. The E3 Music Festival was
born.
What better to add to an independent
music festival than the ultimate independent band - Alexisonfire. This
changed everything, particularly the
potential size of the audience. Bands
were encouraged to sell as many tickets as they could before September 1st,
with the band selling the most playing
in direct support to Alexisonfire.
The compilation idea was dropped,
then improved on by using www.
dropcards.com. Each person was given a VIP pass on a lanyard to keep as
a souvenir as well as take home to visit
the website in order to download two
songs from every band/artist that performed that day using the code imbedded on the pass.
The University administration got
wind of the festival and contributed
financially in order to promote the
‘Think Green’ element to the program.
Each person was given a stadium cup
in order to promote reusing. They also
served as a keepsake and featured the
logo, date, venue, etc, as well as all the
contributing logos and our website.
Next year the festival will be reintroduced as E4 Music Festival, incorporating all four elements.
The final result was a full day (3pm –
11pm) of live music on three stages,
featuring 10 bands, 3 acoustic artists,
1 national headliner, and a more than
satisfied audience.
E3 Music Festival proved that a small
idea, with a lot of hard work and
great partnerships between the bands,
UWSA, and the University can make
the event bigger and better, not to
mention a possible cornerstone to our
Welcome Week programming.

all at the COCA National Conference in London. With some, I got
to connect faces to voices on the telephone, while others - it was a pleasure
seeing you again in a more social environment.
Hope your summer was great and the
new semester brings a fantastic and
spirited group of students. It's been
a fun and busy summer for me that
morphed into a series of tours, followed by frosh week and orientation
shows across USA and Canada.
My frosh week shows started midAugust in Denver and wrapped last
weekend in Kelowna, BC. I love being
part of new student activities. It sets
the tone of what to expect on campus:
a fun and exciting environment that
2010 - 2011, ISSUE 1

from the start. My show is clean, musical and fast paced. Comedy is the
most important aspect of the show. I
get to return to many campuses and

most talked about performances of
the school year. The participants are
the stars of the show - I am simply the

mindyourmind brings iCopeU to College and University Campuses
Brian Blatnicki

M
ental illness and related behaviour problems have risen dramatically on college and university
campuses, research suggests. Emotional distress, anxiety, depression
and suicide related to mental illness
on campuses have put an exclamation
point on the seriousness of this growing crisis.
With students in mind, a not for
profit, award winning youth mental health program, mindyourmind
(http://www.mindyourmind.ca), has
created a new web-based resource for
university and college students called
‘iCopeU’. (http://www.icopeu.com)
iCopeU offers a diverse range of online resources built on the visions of
young adults about how and where
they want information relating to
mental health. iCopeU offers fingertip access to reliable information,
stress management and safety planning tools to students who are feeling
overwhelmed.
The internet has increasingly become
the medium of choice for mental
health information and the first point
of entry into services for many youth.
Through the use of technology and
innovative practices, mindyourmind
works closely with young adults to
create reliable and relevant online
content.
Visitors to the iCopeU Portal are encouraged to learn about mental wellness and actively explore personal2010 - 2011, ISSUE 1
ized coping tools. Students can access
information and resources on their
terms, and in a fun, interactive way.
The mindyourmind staff will work
closely with your faculty to develop
the online mental health portal to
match you student’s needs.
"We want to help customize iCopeU
to meet the unique needs of the Students in your local communities,"
said Maria Luisa Contursi, Program
Manager, mindyourmind. "iCopeU
provides reliable information , 24/7
emergency services and specialized
community resources for important
issues such as suicide risk, sexual assault, addictions, violence and eating
disorders, at the users leisure"
Fanshawe College, in London, ON is
the first Canadian educational campus to provide iCopeU access to its
students. The website is live and mindyourmind hopes that other Educational Institutions will soon provide
their students iCopeU.
In addition to community resource
information, the Fanshawe version
of the website includes meditation
and relaxation tools, as well flashanimated games designed to help students develop personal coping skills.
iCopeU also promotes awareness and
referral to on-campus Fanshawe student services, in essence extending
the reach of Fanshawe's existing resources to assist students during 'off
hours' or at times when it may be inconvenient or impossible for them to
access services in person.
“This will allow us greater impact,"
says Lois Wey, Manager, Counselling and Accessibility Services at
Fanshawe College. "It also enables
ground level engagement of the end
user through 24/7 access to excellent
mental health resources.” said Wey.

Dirty Deeds, time goes way too slowly"

T
he Canadian Tribute to AC/
DC “Dirty Deeds” can be! For
those of you who might not know,
Tribute equals exclusive. No need for
other music, stage clothes and props.
Countless hours of rehersal. And the
most important ingredient is dedication, which is quite evident if you
have ever had the opportunity to see
these guys live.
Dirty Deeds have considered the last
ten years to be a great learning experience, playing every corner of the
Atlantic Provinces and some northern states. However, it is time to see
more.
Two life size working cannons have
just been added to the show and a
Hells Bell has been commissioned
and is expected shortly. For anyone
curious yes they do plan on having
their own Rosie someday very soon!
So I guess their future can be summed
up with two words "Bigger-Better".
On their website www.dirtydeeds.ca
there are video clips available. Thanks
so much for your time. It is truly appreciated. The best is yet to come
folks – For Those About to Rock…
We Salute You!
“Dirty Deeds has performed for KRock’s Birthday Bash during the Apple
Blossom Festival for two years in a
row, and we cannot wait to have them
back again!!! For many K-Rock listeners seeing Dirty Deeds play is as good
as the real thing! The whole bands are
so great to work with and rocked the
pants off 10,000 people this spring!”
- Tina McAuley – Promotions Director 89.3 K-Rock
“I tell you boys it harder than it looks”
– Bon Scott
What Others are Saying:
"Dirty Deeds leave every crowd wanting more with their top notch rendition of the best of the best AC/DC
songs. Not only are they audibly accurate, but unlike lots of "self-described"
tribute acts, these guys actually look
and act the part with precision and
