Children’s Health Centers provide services to
infants, children, and adolescents from birth to 21
years of age. The services include well-child checkups, school and sport physicals, early development
screenings, care for injuries and minor acute illnesses,
care for children with chronic health problems and
special health needs, and WIC services.

The Complex Care Program (CCP) provides a
patient and family-centered “Medical Home” for
children and youth with special healthcare needs.
Located in the Children’s Health Center, our integrated
model allows us to provide both primary care and
consultative services to children with complex
chronic conditions.

• Provide services to children who meet the
eligibility criteria:
- Child is medically complex and has two or
more chronic conditions
- Followed by multiple specialists often within
the Children’s system
- May be technology dependent (G-Tube,
ventilator, and tracheostomy)
• Provide ongoing care coordination between
visits including communication with family,
primary care providers, and specialists
• Help families negotiate the healthcare system
and provide a link to community resources
• Create written care plans with the family to share
with the primary care provider
• Provide comprehensive care coordination through
a team approach that includes nurse case
management, parent navigators, and social work

The Healthy Generations Program is a “teen-tot”
program that provides medical care, family planning,
case management, social work, and mental health
services to adolescent parents and their children in
the Washington, DC, area. The program serves
approximately 500 families at three Children’s Health
Centers in underserved areas of the city. Compared
to city and national averages, teen parents enrolled in
the program are much less likely to become pregnant
again while still a teenager, and their children have
higher immunization rates, among other positive
outcomes. Generations also serves young fathers
through case management, support groups, and
individual counseling. Generations has received
many awards, including the District of Columbia
Hospital Association 2005 Haynes Rice Community
Service Award, the National Organization for Adolescent
Parenting Pregnancy and Prevention 2003 Spirit of
Service Award, and was honored by Senator Hillary
Clinton in 2000 at a White House Reception for using
innovative approaches to teen pregnancy prevention
in the District of Columbia. The Healthy Generations
Program also was instrumental in forming the DC
Secondary Prevention Coalition with the DC Campaign
to Prevent Teen Pregnancy in order to increase
collaboration among organizations providing care to
adolescent parents in Washington, DC.

Mobile Health Services treats children from birth
through age 21. The program has been in existence for
over 20 years. In 2005, the Mobile Health Program
established a fixed clinic site in Ward 8 at the
Children’s Health Center at THEARC. The program
serves approximately 4,000 children through 10,000
visits annually.
The Mobile Health Program provides care regardless
of the ability to pay. The mobile clinics serve children
from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, but
primarily targets Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8.

The Freddie Mac Foundation Child and Adolescent
Protection Center offers multidisciplinary assessment,
treatment, and advocacy services to maltreated
children and their families. Center staff also provides
consultation to colleagues both inside and outside
the hospital.

Medical services are available by appointment or on
an emergency basis. When children are suspected or
alleged to have suffered physical abuse, sexual abuse
or neglect, a comprehensive medical examination is
conducted by child abuse pediatricians who specialize in
forensic issues, diagnosis and medical sequelae of child
victimization, and who provide initial and follow-up
treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and injuries
related to child maltreatment. Forensic medical
examinations for acute sexual abuse/assault are available
by pediatric sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE)
when requested by the DC Metropolitan Police
Department.
Trauma informed mental health services are provided
by clinical social workers and a psychologist who
are child victimization specialists. Services include:
• Crisis intervention
• Mental health assessments
• Ongoing mental health therapy
• Juvenile sexual offender services

The Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine service
provides consultations and outpatient care to
adolescents and teenagers ages 12 to 21 with a
variety of health problems including acne, eating
disorders, gynecological problems, sports injuries,
substance abuse, and a range of psychological
problems related to developing adolescents and
their families.
Burgess Clinic:
The Burgess Clinic is metropolitan Washington,
DC’s, only comprehensive service for HIV infected
adolescents and young adults. Medical, psychological,
and case management needs are met by a highly
trained team of core providers. The clinic also
conducts a variety of research studies.
Delaney Eating Disorders Program:

The Donald Delaney Eating Disorders Program is t
he region’s premier program for adolescents with
anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating problems.
An experienced team of physicians, psychologists,
nutritionists and nurse practitioners provide
comprehensive outpatient counseling and treatment
as well as intensive in hospital nutrition rehabilitation
services. Centered at our Spring Valley Outpatient
Center, program services also are available at the
Sheikh Zayed Campus for Advanced Children’s
Medicine.
The Youth Pride Clinic:
The Youth Pride Clinic is the only clinic in the
region serving the unique needs of Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Youth
(LGBTQ). Medical services and social psychological
support are available for patients and families.

The Division of Allergy and Immunology provides
diagnosis, education, and treatment for the full
spectrum of allergic and immunologic disorders.
Allergy: The allergy team provides care for patients
with a wide variety of allergic conditions, including
asthma, environmental allergies, eczema, hives, and
insect venom allergy. Diagnostic services offered
include allergy skin testing to environmental, food,
venom, and medication allergens; serum allergy
testing; oral ingestion challenges; and delayed
hypersensitivity testing.
In addition, our allergy program offers specialized
care for the unique needs of patients with food
allergies, including IgE-mediated food allergy,
gastrointestinal food allergy, and eosinophilic
gastrointestinal disorders. Our team provides testing,
diagnosis, and care for food allergies as well as
extensive education to patients and families.
We also are one of only a few food allergy programs
in the country to have a dedicated food allergy
psychology program.

All of the anesthesiologists at Children’s National
completed fellowships in pediatric anesthesiology and
are among the best in the nation. Children’s National
offers a complete spectrum of surgical anesthesia
services, including anesthesia for pediatric congenital
heart disease, heart transplantation, craniofacial
reconstruction, neurosurgery, reconstruction of the
larynx and trachea, and complex pediatric surgery.
Regional anesthesia and patient-controlled analgesia
are available. The division will consult on malignant
hyperthermia, pulmonary insufficiency, and pain
management. Pre-operative consultation from referring
physicians is welcomed and encouraged. Pre-anesthetic
preparation of the child and parents is stressed.
The division also provides Non-Operating Room
Anesthesia (NORA) for procedures such as bone
marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and burn dressing
changes. An anesthesiology-supervised sedation
service is also available for children undergoing MRIs.
The Peri-Operative Care Clinic (POCC) is a dedicated
team of pediatric professionals that screens patients
for surgery and helps create a specific care plan for
each surgical patient with medically complex
conditions or special care needs.

The Brain Tumor Institute boasts one of the most
active clinical and translational research programs in
the country. It is the only brain tumor center in the
region that is a member of the Children’s Oncology
Group’s Phase I Consortium, Pediatric Brain Tumor
Consortium, the Pacific Neuro-Oncology
Consortium, the Collaborative Ependymoma
Research Network, and Neurofibromatosis Clinical
Trials Consortium, ensuring that children cared for
receive the newest in treatment. Children’s National
also collaborates with St. Jude’s, Duke University,
and other leading institutions in selective areas of
clinical care.
The clinical/translational research program is
supported by a robust brain tumor research program
with focused research in medulloblastomas, highgrade gliomas, brainstem gliomas, and low-grade
gliomas. Children’s experienced neurosurgical team
uses advanced techniques such as image-guided
surgery and laser guided heat ablation.
The Division of Neurosurgery at Children’s National
has one the lowest rates (less than five percent) of
posterior fossa mutism syndrome (temporary loss of
speech) in the United States, an essentially negligible
mortalityrate, and one of the lowest shunt infection
incidences in the country.
A brain lab, with a fully integrated intra-operative
MRI, is an essential element of the Brain Tumor
Institute at Children’s National. The institute recently
opened a molecular diagnostics laboratory providing
CLIA-certified, Nanostring-based molecular

consultation and testing is available to assess the risks of genetic predisposition
conditions underlying the development of brain tumors and the associated risks
of cancer development for other family members.
The Neuro-Oncology Program at Children’s National has been in continuous
operation for nearly 20 years. Approximately 1,000 patients annually, including
180 new patients, are treated by the neuro-oncology team. In addition, the team
provides second opinions for more than 200 patients from throughout the nation
and world each year.
The program also conducts studies on the sequelae of childhood brain tumors
and their treatment, as well as offering new therapies (including cognitive
rehabilitation) to overcome these sequelae. Children’s National’s brain tumor
laboratories study tumor biology in efforts to develop new molecularly-targeted
therapy and prevent the long term effects of the tumor and its treatment.

outpatient diagnostic and treatment services for a full
range of pediatric cardiovascular disorders, including
congenital heart disease, acquired heart disease,

Critical Care Medicine focuses on life support
therapies and monitoring for medical, cardiac, and
surgical conditions. Care is provided 24 hours a day
by dedicated in-house critical care physicians in a
31-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 26-bed
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. The diagnoses are
extremely varied and include medical and postoperative conditions. These include sepsis, respiratory
failure, heart failure, congenital heart disease, coma,
seizures, asthma, trauma, neurologic injuries,
pneumonia, meningitis, and many uncommon and
rare conditions. Advanced forms of repiratory and
cardiac support, including a large ECMO
program are readily available.
Children’s National plays an active role in advancing
the field of pediatric critical care medicine through
research, advocacy, and education. Through
participation the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care
Research Network and other NIH sponsored trials,
Children’s National strives to reduce the mortality and
morbidity of pediatric critical illness, and is the only
center in region studying hypothermia after pediatric
cardiac arrest and traumatic brain injury.

Dermatologic conditions that are associated with
underlying systemic disorders also are managed.
Skin biopsies, fungal cultures, and hair examinations
are offered.
Treatments include a full range of medical and minor
surgical procedures, including liquid nitrogen cryosurgery,
electrodesiccation of lesions, and surgery for moles and
skin cancer.
Laser surgery for vascular lesions and birth marks is
available. This includes port-wine stains, infantile
hemangiomas, and other congenital or acquired
vascular lesions. Adults with port-wine stains are also
eligible for laser surgery at Children’s National. The
team provides laser surgery for scars from surgery,
burns, trauma, and other causes.

The Division of Emergency Medicine provides a full
range of diagnostic services and treatment for acutely
ill or injured patients. The Emergency Medicine and
Trauma Center is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
and provides pediatric medical control for the region.
Emergency care is supervised by board certified
pediatric emergency physicians and pediatricians.
All pediatric subspecialists are available for
consultation for emergency care.
Community emergency and primary care providers
can access Children’s National emergency physicians
and refer patients 24 hours a day through our
Emergency Communication and Information Center
(ECIC) by calling 202-476-5433 (LIFE). We also
encourage direct admissions through BearDirect at
202-476-5433 (LIFE).
The ECIC also can arrange for rapid air or ground
transport. The Division of Transport Medicine (page
175) provides trained staff to arrive at the referring
hospital or office to transport patients to Children’s
National.
The Fast Track Center provides after-hours services
for minor acute illnesses and injuries. The Fast Track
Center serves nearly 320,000 patients each year.
The Evaluation and Treatment Unit provides care to
those patients who require up to 24 hours of
observation and/or treatment, but do not require
a hospital admission.
The EMTC is home to a state-of-the-art
Decontamination Unit to meet the needs of children
and families in the event of a biological, chemical or
radiological event. The 4,785 sq. ft. multipurpose
facility is the only one of its kind in the region.

The Division of Epilepsy and Neurophysiology
includes one of the nation’s largest pediatric teams
that provides an integrated approach to conditions
that benefit from ongoing monitoring, treatment,
and intervention by Children’s specialists with
clinical and research expertise. The following make

Children’s Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy
Program sees close to 8,000 patients each year.
Care for these patients begins with new onset seizure
evaluation/education, through long-term care, and
adult transition. Epilepsy treatment at Children’s
includes strong cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric
evaluation and support. Comprehensive treatment
options include new pharmaceutical therapeutics,
ketogenic diet, vagal nerve stimulation, and epilepsy
surgery. The team also addresses the concurrent social,
educational, and emotional issues faced by the patient
and family.
Neurology Critical Care includes the Pediatric
Neuro-ICU Program and the Neonatal Neuro-ICU
Program
in Children’s state-of-the-art Inpatient Tower.
The inpatient neurology team collaborates with
Children’s neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and critical
care intensivists to provide comprehensive clinical care
for children with complex conditions, illnesses, or
injuries. Children’s technologically advanced Neuro
ICU is the only pediatric ICU in the region that is
dedicated to neurological focus in critical care. This
service offers the only pediatric stroke program in the

area, with active pediatric neuromonitoring. Children’s
National also is a leader in neuro-protection for infants
and newborns. Neonatal neurologists round with
neonatologists in the NICU to provide specialized care

The Neuromuscular Program is one of the largest in
the country, evaluating and treating infants and children
with muscular dystrophies, myopathies, neuromuscular
junction disorders, peripheral nerve disease, and spinal
muscular atrophy. This team offers a full range of clinical
services, that includes electrodiagnostic studies and
muscle biopsies. Eligible patients can also enroll in
clinical trials that focus on cutting-edge treatment for
neuromuscular diseases. Partnering with the Muscular
Dystrophy Association, this team runs a multidisciplinary
team that includes physicians from Physical Medical
Rehabilitation, Cardiology, Pulmonary, nutritional
counseling, genetic counselor, and social work to ensure
that patients and families receive the best clinical care.
The Neurophysiology Program is comprised of
specialists in all diagnostic testing related to pediatric
neurology assessment and care, including
electroencephalogram (EEG), evoked response,
electromyography (EMG), and nerve conduction (NCV).
Long term, video EEG diagnostic testing is done on an
inpatient basis at the hospital main campus.

This team is involved in the diagnosis, consultation,
counseling, and coordination of care for conditions
ranging from genetic syndromes and malformations,

In addition to providing the highest level of general
gastroenterology care, the division has developed
state-of-the-art programs for our patients. The
Intestinal Rehabilitation Program provides
evaluation, management, and long term care for
children with life-threatening disorders including
short bowel syndrome. The program works closely
with our colleagues at Georgetown University
Hospital as part of our Joint Transplant Program.

The Celiac Disease Program offers comprehensive
evaluation, treatment, and support for children with
celiac disease, and includes internationally
recognized experts in Gastroenterology, Laboratory
Medicine, and Pathology. The multidisciplinary
team also includes a nurse practitioner coordinator,
a dietician with extensive experience with pediatric
celiac disease, nurses, and psychological support
through our dedicated Celiac Program Psychologist.

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program
provides care for children and their families with IBD.
The multidisciplinary team includes a nurse
practitioner coordinator, a dietician, nurses, and social
work support.
The Comprehensive Motility Program provides a full
range of motility testing for a wide variety of disorders.
This multi-disciplinary team works closely with Pain
Medicine, Cardiology, and Surgery.
The Food Allergy/EoE Program, a multidisciplinary
effort run in conjunction with the Division of Allergy
and Immunology, includes a dietitian and nursing
team.
The Hepatology Program provides in-depth
evaluations of a full range of pediatric liver diseases.
The Aerodigestive Program is a multi-disciplinary
effort which evaluates children with breathing and
swallowing problems. The team includes members
of ENT, Pulmonary, and Gastroenterology.
In addition, we are part of a multidisciplinary infant
feeding disorders team which uses a family-centered
approach to assess and manage toddlers with feeding
difficulties. We also provide care and support for
children requiring long-term enteral and tube feeding
programs.
Referring physicians may wish to directly contact a GI
attending regarding emergency cases. Previous X-rays
and growth charts are extremely helpful in completion
of an initial consultation.

single clinical genetics programs in the United

The Division of Hematology is one of the largest
pediatric hematology programs in the country and
provides specialized inpatient, consultative, and
outpatient care for pediatric patients with a wide
variety of blood and bone marrow disorders,
including sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and other
hemoglobinopathies, bleeding and thrombotic
disorders, platelet problems, histiocyte disorders,
bone marrow failure syndromes, anemias, and
neutropenia. Children’s National also has one of the
largest sickle cell programs and is one of the largest
hemophilia treatment centers in the nation.
A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses,
physician assistants, nurse practitioners, psychologists,
social workers, and physical therapists provides the
best care for children with blood disorders. Our
faculty provides state-of-the-art clinical care and
participates in a variety of clinical and translational
research projects as part of the Children’s Research
Institute. Specialized laboratory testing in coagulation,
hemostasis, and transfusion medicine is available
on the Sheikh Zayed campus. Children’s National
has its own blood bank and a nationally recognized
Buddy Program for our chronically transfused
patients with sickle cell anemia.
The Division of Hematology is dedicated to finding
new and more effective therapies by participating
in, and initiating clinical trials sponsored by the
National Institutes of Health and other organizations.
As part of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders,
hematology patients have access to the Patient
and Family Support Program, which provides
comprehensive mental health and psychosocial
services and helpful resources for all patients
treated by the center, as well as patients’ parents
and siblings.

The Sickle Cell Disease program follows more than 1,400 children,
making it one of the largest pediatric sickle cell programs in the
country. Offering hydroxyurea therapy, blood transfusions and new
drug treatments, Children’s National specialists ease the disease’s
effects and have even cured the disease through hematopoietic step
cell transplantation (HSCT), in collaboration with the Division of
Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

expert care for infants and children with both
common and complex health problems in

physician. Because Hospitalists are present in the
hospital, they have the ability to reevaluate a

closely with the Emergency Department and

immunocompetent and immunocompromised
patients with the entire spectrum of infectious
diseases. Faculty perform research as investigators
in Children’s Research Institute, including funding by
the National Institutes of Health, and have additional
responsibilities in directing various programs,
including:
• Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control
Program: Provides surveillance, prevention, and
control of healthcare associated infections, including
interface between Children’s National and local and
state health departments.
• Special Immunology Program: Provides a
comprehensive care program for children at risk for
the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The
Special Immunology Service (SIS) serves as the
primary referral center for pediatric HIV care in the
Washington, DC, metropolitan area and provides
professional and public education and advocacy efforts
concerning children with HIV infection. SIS develops
and participates in research programs including
multiple NIH, CDC, and industry-sponsored clinical
trials and research networks to improve treatment
and outcomes for infants and children with HIV
infection or exposure.
• Antimicrobial Stewardship Program: Provides oversight and guidance in appropriate selection, dosing,
route, and duration of antimicrobial therapy for
patients at Children’s National. The goal of the program is to optimize treatment while enhancing
patient safety by minimizing antimicrobial toxicity
and emergence of resistant pathogens.

the Sheikh Zayed Campus for Advanced Children’s

to 3 months). Children’s 54-bed NICU features

the infant with major neurologic, genetic, metabolic,
renal, and/or gastrointestinal disorders, and the term
infant with life-threatening respiratory distress. Two
major clinical programs include:
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
Program: This critical program provides newborns,
children, and adults with respiratory or cardiac failure
minute-to-minute bedside support from physicians
and experts who specialize in the complex
technology used during ECMO care.
Neonatal Neurology and Neonatal Neurocritical
Care Program: A multidisciplinary team of a
Neonatal Neurologists and Neonatologists who
specialize in clinical care of the infant with brain
injury. The total body cooling is available for infants
with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy through this
program.
One of the major strengths of the Children’s National
NICU programs is the family-centered approach to
care provided by the staff, including private rooms
in the NICUs, families on rounds at all NICUs, and
family councils that direct improvement in care.
Linked with the highly technical and comprehensive
care provided by the Children’s medical team is an
active research team of neonatologists investigating
treatments and disease states encountered in the
newborn population. The combination of clinical
and research efforts, and nursing care guarantees the
highest level of care for newborn infants in the area.

The Division of Nephrology offers diagnostic
procedures and treatment for hypertension and the
entire range of diseases of the kidney and urinary
tract. This includes hematuria, nephrotic syndrome,
chronic and acute renal failure, congenital renal
disease, proteinuria, and glomerulonephritis.
Transplant donor and recipient evaluation and longterm transplant management is provided for renal
transplant patients. Special testing services include
renal biopsies and renal transplant management.
Care is provided for the acute and chronic renalfailure patient, including hemodialysis and peritoneal
dialysis, and training for home dialysis. Patients
should bring with them any medical information
concerning their conditions (i.e., medical records,
test results, or X-rays).

The Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics Program is
a resource and referral center for children with
developmental needs and their families. Several fulltime neurodevelopmental pediatricians assess and
diagnose developmental disorders in children from
birth through age 21. We coordinate comprehensive
services and make referrals to various specialty
departments within Children’s National or with
professionals in the region.
The division combines the expertise of its staff
to provide comprehensive services to children with
intellectual and developmental abnormalities that are
sporadic or due to known Neurogenetic conditions.
We work closely with the referring pediatricians as
well as other specialists at Children’s and in the
community to provide comprehensive care for
children who may have multisystem disabilities.
Multidisciplinary clinics such as the neurogenetics
program (see below) and case conferences allow
coordinated care.

Children’s Neurofibromatosis Institute has been
designated a Neurofibromatosis Center of
Excellence by the Childhood Tumor Foundation.
The institute offers a multidisciplinary clinic with
one central location for patients and families to
meet with specialists in genetics, neurology, and
ophthalmology. From that clinic, patients and
families are referred as needed to specialists in
oncology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, and
otolaryngology.
Children’s Neurofibromatosis Institute was chosen
as one of eight programs in the United States to
participate in the Neurofibromatosis Clinical Trials
Consortium and Dr. Packer is group chair of the
consortium. The institute also participates in
developing new therapeutic treatments for the
neurocognitive aspects of neurofibromatosis, and
assesses the agent, lovastatin, for children with
neurofibromatosis and learning disabilities.
The institute provides extensive support for families
and children, including the coordination of the
largest neurofibromatosis camp on the East Coast
for children between the ages of 7 and 16.

and international destination for newborns and
children with disease, trauma, or malformation of
the brain, spine, or nervous system.
Children’s National neurosurgeons define the
standard of care by integrating into all procedures
advanced neuro-imaging and neurophysiological
monitoring. Our neurosurgeons routinely use
minimally invasive strategies when appropriate.
All aspects of neurosurgical consultation and
treatment are offered with appointments available

For children and adolescents with a BMI of 95th
percent or higher, the Improving Diet, Energy
and Activity for Life (IDEAL) Clinic provides
comprehensive assessment of the risk factors that
have contributed to accelerated weight gain and
associated comorbidities. We work with children,
adolescents and their families to individualize a
management plan to achieve better metabolic
health and weight regulation. Patients have access
to our team comprised of pediatric weight
management specialists, a preventive cardiologist,
an endocrinologist, a sports medicine physician,
licensed health educators, and registered dieticians.
We work closely with the larger network of Children’s
National dieticians, exercise therapists, psychologists,
and subspecialists in Gastroenterology,
Endocrinology, Nephrology, Orthopaedics and Sleep
Medicine, as well as with our surgical team for
adolescents who will benefit from adjunct surgical
weight loss procedures. The IDEAL Clinic sees
approximately 3000 patient visits annually to
locations in Virginia and Maryland. Patients are seen
every four to six weeks for the first six to twelve
months, with ongoing follow-up tailored to need,
coordinated with community programs to reinforce
healthy habits.
The Bariatric (Weight-Loss) Surgery Program
aims to help children and adolescents who are
morbidly obese through surgical intervention. While
diet and behavior changes can help some children
and adolescents, many of these patients go on to
become obese adults. Weight-loss through bariatric

surgery is one way to treat morbid obesity by
producing significant weight loss, correcting
obesity-related medical conditions, and improving
self-image and socialization. To be considered for
weight-loss surgery, patients must meet specific
criteria.
Patients who wish to undergo weight-loss surgery
must:
• Be at Tanner Development Stage 4 or greater
(unless there is a compelling medical reason to
forego this requirement)
• Have a BMI of at least 35 with an obesity-related
condition, or a BMI greater than 40 without an
obesity-related condition
• Have a history of obesity for at least three years
that includes at least three months of documented
failed attempts at diet and medical management
of obesity
• Complete follow-up visits for five years after
surgery
• Complete all clinically required laboratory and
diagnostic tests
• Have confirmation from a psychologist or
psychiatrist that he or she is sufficiently mature
to comply with the clinical protocol (Done at
Children’s National, although some exceptions
may be made)

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports
Medicine provides a full range of orthopaedic
services for children and teens. Patients may be
referred for diagnosis and treatment of all types
of musculoskeletal
conditions. Casting and X-ray services are also
provided. Services include diagnosis, evaluation,
and treatment of:
• Acute injuries including fractures, sprains,
and strains
• Urgent orthopaedic conditions including bone

Comprehensive Spine Program
The program consists of pediatric orthopaedic
fellowship-trained physicians who provide
comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for
children with a variety of spinal conditions, including
early onset scoliosis, idiopathic, congenital, and
neuromuscular scoliosis, congenital and developmental
kyphosis, spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, spinal
trauma, infections, and tumors. The team uses all
aspects of treatment including casting, bracing, and
surgery. State-of-the-art surgical techniques are used,
such as real-time intra-operative neurologic monitoring,
intra-operative CT imaging, real-time image guided
surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and growth
friendly surgical techniques including traditional
growing rods, magnetic growth rods, and VEPTR.
Children’s Sports Medicine Program includes
orthopaedic surgeons and an athletic trainer. Children’s
National cares for the athletes at local high schools in
MD, DC, and VA. The Sports Medicine program can
diagnose and treat the following types of injuries:
• Acute musculoskeletal injuries (knee, shoulder,
ankle, back, neck, foot, hand injuries/sprains)
• Overuse injuries (tendonitis, Little League elbow
or shoulder, etc.)
• ACL or ligament injuries
• Stress fractures
• Burners/stingers
Children’s Hand Program has specialty clinics dedicated
to treating patients with congenital hand differences,
cerebral palsy, brachial plexus birth injuries, and
neuromuscular disorders. The team also manages the
more prevalent problems like trauma, sports injuries,
and overuse injuries.

Children’s Hip Disorders Program
The program provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment
services for patients from infancy to young adult with a variety
of hip conditions, including hip dysplasia, hip dislocations, labral
injuries, femoroacetabular impingement, slipped capital femoral
epiphysis, Perthes disease, avascular necrosis, and hip pain. The
team uses a variety of diagnostic and treatment methods
including hip reductions, use of Pavlik harness, surgical hip
dislocation, periacetabular osteotomy (Ganz osteotomy), and
hip arthroscopy.

Pediatric Bone Health Program
This program consists of a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, nurse
specialist, and pediatric endrocrinologist with extensive experience
in treating issues of bone health in children. This multidisciplinary
program offers diagnosis and treatment for children with a history
of frequent fractures, a genetic susceptibility to low bone density,
brittle bone disease, and chronic medical conditions which put
children at risk for bone density issues. Services including
evaluation with DEXA scanning and bisphosphonate infusion
are offered.

The Pain Medicine Care Complex in the Sheikh Zayed
Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation is one of
only a few programs in the country focused exclusively
on managing pain for infants, children, and teens. When
children are unable to express their pain in words, our
pediatric specialists have the unique insight to help.
As part of the institute’s Pain Medicine Initiative, the
Care Complex draws on a multidisciplinary approach
to enable treatment of your child’s physical symptoms
as well as the psychological and emotional aspects of
pain. We consider how a child feels and perceives
pain, and take steps in care to reduce their fears and
their family’s anxieties.
There is no typical pain patient. The team looks at every
part of a child’s pain. We develop a unique treatment
plan that may blend traditional medicine and alternative
therapies to best fit the needs of each patient.
The team helps children affected by long-term pain,
usually lasting four to six weeks, who have not
responded to standard treatments, and patients with
certain conditions, including:

requiring hospitalization. All team members are available to see inpatients on
an as-needed basis so that coordinated care is assured during hospitalization.
Every effort is made to continue coordinated care for patients needing
intensive inpatient therapy following an acute inpatient stay. That care is
coordinated with the National Center for Children’s Rehabilitation (NCCR)
at the Medstar National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH).

The Spina Bifida/Spinal Defects Program is a multidisciplinary program
that provides comprehensive care for children and adolescents with
myelodysplasia and other spinal anomalies or injuries. The staff includes

Additionally, members of the Fetal Medicine team consult when a diagnosis
of spina bifida is made in utero. As a result, families and care team members

The Craniofacial Program is a multidisciplinary program encompassing talents of

Wound Program:
The Wound Program collaborates with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a
consulting service providing comprehensive wound support for both ambulatory
and inpatients at Children’s National Sheikh Zayed campus. The wound service also
supports both inpatients and outpatients through the Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery clinic. Two advanced practice nurses consult on wound and skin concerns:
surgical site complications, pressure ulcers, infectious process, skin rashes, ostomy
care, and continent urinaryl fecal diversions. Their scope of care includes prevention,

The Sleep Medicine Program is certified by the
American Academy of Sleep Medicine as an
accredited Sleep Center. This multidisciplinary service
is designed to provide comprehensive assessment
and treatment of children and adolescents with a
variety of sleep related problems. The Pediatric Sleep
Disorders team includes sleep medicine experts,
pulmonologists, behavioral psychologists, maxillofacial
specialists and nurses. All sleep medicine attending
staff are board-certified in sleep medicine. Evaluation,
diagnostic testing, therapeutic intervention, and
follow-up are provided for all sleep disorders from
infancy through adolescence.
Sleep problems evaluated in the Pediatric Sleep
Disorders Clinic include:
• Snoring/breathing difficulties which can be a
sign of obstructive sleep apnea
• Bedtime refusal, difficulty falling asleep
• Difficulty staying asleep
• Sleepwalking
• Sleep terrors
• Nightmares/nighttime fears
• Excessive daytime sleepiness, including
narcolepsy

The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Laboratory provides
diagnostic polysomnography and therapeutic
application of CPAP and BiPAP. Overnight sleep
studies and multiple sleep latency tests are conducted
in a four-bed lab with state-of-the-art equipment.

The Pediatric Positive Airway Pressure (PPAP) Clinic provides medical
and behavioral oversight of pediatric patients requiring continuous or
bi-level positive airway pressure support. Services include evaluation

The Division of Respiratory Care Services provides
24/7 service for patients at Children’s National.
Respiratory Care Practitioners’ (RCPs) scope of
activities includes, but are not limited to, managing
life support with state-of-the art equipment for
mechanically ventilated patients; performing
therapeutic and diagnostic procedures for a wide
variety of patients with pulmonary and cardiac
diseases; participating in ground and flight
transport of the most critical children; administering
specialty gases, and providing Extracorporeal Life
Support (ECLS or ECMO) for all age groups with
life-threatening conditions.
As graduates of AMA-approved professional colleges,
RCPs progress through an in-house training process,
from level-I to level-IV, to become the nation’s
highest quality of care providers of respiratory care.
The division participates in several nationwide
educational, benchmarking, and data-sharing
activities to meet National Patient Safety Goals,

children with autoimmune and inflammatory
diseases. The division welcomes children of any age,
from infancy to young adulthood. This service
includes diagnosis and treatment as well as

The Division of General and Thoracic Surgery
practice encompasses elective, trauma and
emergency surgery programs. Children’s National
performs more than 18,000 procedures each year on
infants, children, and adolescents including hernia
repair; simple and complex tumor biopsy and

Children’s National transports more than 6000
neonates and children each year. The transport
team provides rapid access to Children’s National
specialists for conditions such as asthma, heart
problems, seizures, and premature birth.
Transports are performed via ground ambulance and
SkyBear®, Children’s National’s helicopter service.*
We provide optimal care for patients with lifethreatening injuries, illnesses, or other conditions
through highly specialized and extensively trained
pediatric and neonatal ground and flight teams. Most
importantly, the helicopter expands access and improves
transport response times for referrals. Children’s
National is the only hospital in the region with
pediatric trained flight teams.
Neonatal and pediatric transport, via ground or
SkyBear® service, is available 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, with immediate access through one
source—Children’s Lifeline (202-476-LIFE). Our
communications and transfer center coordinates
all aspects of the transport and admissions process
and communicates updates to the referring physician.
*STAT MedEvac is a Direct Air Carrier, E3MA774L, that
arranges and coordinates the operation of air ambulance
services. All flights are operated by STAT MedEvac.

As a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, Children’s
National provides the highest level of care for injured
children. Severely injured children brought to the
Emergency Department are immediately evaluated
and treated by a 12-member trauma response team.
The complex inpatient care required by trauma
patients is coordinated by our advanced practice
nurses and surgical staff. We work closely with
physicians specializing in pediatric orthopaedics,
neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and many other
divisions to treat all types of injuries.
Children’s provides comprehensive burn care from
initial evaluation through outpatient rehabilitation.
Patients with burn injuries can be referred to our
Emergency Department or directly to our outpatient
burn clinic. Services provided in the outpatient
clinic include burn assessment, dressing changes,
physical and occupational therapy evaluations,
and scar management.
The Division of Trauma and Burn Surgery also is
committed to injury prevention. We collaborate
with local agencies and community organizations
to provide families with information on topics such
as pedestrian safety and scald burn prevention. For

The Division of Urology at Children’s National is
the area’s largest and most experienced group of
physicians trained especially to treat children with
illnesses of the genitourinary tract. Children’s
National pediatric urologists have more than 100
years of combined experience in the diagnosis and
treatment of all genitourinary disorders in infants,
children adolescents. This includes genital
reconstruction, surgical repair of congenital and
acquired urinary tract abnormalities, daytime and
nighttime wetting, urinary tract infections, and other
disorders, and deformities. Phone consultations from
physicians are encouraged.
To reduce the number of trips for the family,
radiographic and soniographic evaluation will be
arranged whenever possible for the date of
consultation. If imaging studies and/or urine
cultures have been done previously, they should
be sent with the patient on the initial visit. Please
include all urine culture results.
