“Enjoy the Great Alberta Outdoors”
about apos
Now entering its 19 th year, the
Alberta Professional Outfitters Society
(APOS) is a non-profit Delegated Administrative Organization, an arms-length,
self-funded legal entity established for the
purpose of delivering services traditionally provided by government. Since 1997,
APOS has had the delegated responsibility for administering the outfitted-hunting
industry in Alberta.
Anyone wishing to offer and provide
outf itted hunts in Alberta must be a
member of APOS. The society currently
has about 460 member outfitters, in addition to approximately 1,500 registered
guides. Collectively, these professionals
provide big game, waterfowl and upland
bird guiding services to several thousand
visiting hunters annually.
All outfitters are required to have clientdeposit bonding and liability insurance,
ensuring the highest level of protection for
visiting hunters. Additionally, members
are bound by a code of ethics that governs
the manner in which they are to conduct
their businesses. An Ethics and Standards
Committee, comprised of current and
former outfitters, along with members
of the general public, serve to resolve disputes and ensure that both outfitters and
guides adhere to the standards established
through the code.
APOS and Alberta’s outfitting industry are active participants in the province’s
conservation community. We have contributed more than $1.5 million to meaningful conservation projects through our
Wildlife Management Fund, and hundreds of thousands of additional dollars
have been contributed in time and effort
by individual outfitters and guides in support of conservation activities.
Outfitting is the oldest tourism industry in Alberta, tracing its roots back to
the 1880s. More than a century later, the
thriving industry contributes in excess of
$100 million annually to the provincial
economy. APOS’s dedicated and enthusiastic members are committed to ensuring that Alberta continues as a standard-

Facts & Figures:
White-tailed deer
Whitetails are Alberta’s most abundant
big game species and also the most
commonly hunted. They average about
200 pounds, though mature bucks
can be very large, with some exceeding 300 pounds. They’re found in
virtually every region of the province,
but are particularly abundant in
the prairie, parkland and southern
boreal zones.
Archery seasons generally start in
late August, with rifle seasons closing
on Nov. 30. The rut typically occurs
in mid-November. In 2014, resident
hunters harvested an impressive
32,707 bucks, up nearly 30 per cent
from 2013 as populations rebound
from a tough winter in 2010.
To date, Alberta’s top whitetails
include Stephen Jansen’s 204 2/8inch typical and the 279 6/8-inch
non-typical taken by Neil Morin.
Huge-antlered whitetails are taken
every year, making the province a
prime destination for those seeking
that once-in-a-lifetime buck.
Hunting terrain can vary greatly,
from dense woods to open alpine
meadows, and favourite chamberings
include the .270, 7mm, .30-06 and
the .300 magnums.
A
lberta is a hunter’s paradise,
featuring a wide variety of big
game and bird game, with realistic opportunities to tag a trophy animal on
each and every hunting trip. Our diverse
terrain allows for a hunting style suited to
each individual hunter, and whether you’re
looking to experience the high peaks of
the Rockies, the vast expanse of the prairies or the majestic boreal forest, Alberta’s
outfitters have a hunt for you.
As of 2016, an astounding 1,576 animals from Alberta have qualified for the
Boone and Crockett Club’s (B&C) record
book. And best of all, 595 of these entries
have been taken since the year 2000. The
good old days of hunting in Alberta are
right now.
Alberta boasts an incredible variety of
big game and bird game in part because
of its size – encompassing 255,541 square
miles, Alberta is the fourth largest province in Canada. In fact, it’s 95 per cent as
large as Texas. There are five major ecoregions (prairies, parkland, mountains,
foothills and boreal forest) that provide a
tremendous diversity of wildlife habitat.
It’s the combination of Alberta’s large size
and its habitat diversity that results in so
many great hunting opportunities and
outstanding trophies.
Hunting opportunities are available
throughout the spring, fall and winter, and
Alberta’s position along the east slope of
the Rockies ensures a welcoming climate.
Fall days are typically warm and sunny
with cool nights and, in higher elevations,
frost on the ground in the mornings. As
November dawns, many parts of the
province have snow, with below-freezing
temperatures being the norm, trending
downward as the end of the month nears.
Bighorn sheep
Alberta is synonymous with record-book
bighorn sheep; an incredible 354 qualifying rams have made the Book, with
61 entered since 2000. Alberta boasts a
new world-record bighorn, picked up in
2010, that scores an impressive 209 4/8

Facts & Figures:
Black bear
Alberta’s black bears are massive, imposing animals that can reach weights
of more than 450 pounds. They’re
found in virtually every forested region
of the province.
Alberta is a renowned bear-hunting
hotspot, with two-bear limits, baiting,
fall and spring seasons and a thriving
population that is actually considered
under-hunted by many biologists.
Alberta bears come in a wide variety
of colour phases, from blond to cinnamon to jet-black and everything in
between. Approximately 2,500 bears
are harvested annually in the province.
Spring seasons typically open April
1 and can run as late as mid-June in
some regions. Fall seasons open at the
end of August and run until the end
of November. In Alberta, black bears
hibernate through the winter months.
Common calibres for hunting black
bear range from the .30 calibres up to
the .338 Winchester Magnum.
Alberta’s largest black bear to date
is Dan Pense’s giant bruin taken in
1999 – it scored 22 7/16 inches B&C.
annually. Records indicate that 212 nontypical whitetails and 328 typical whitetailed deer qualified for the B&C records
up to 2016. Some of the largest bucks
are taken in the transition zone between
the aspen parklands and the boreal forest, but many qualifying bucks have also
been taken in the foothills and prairies.
Hunts run from August to November,
with both archery and rifle hunts offered.
Late-season hunters should be prepared to
hunt in cold conditions and be dressed for
sub-freezing temperatures. Stand hunting remains one of the best ways to take a
trophy buck, so patience and perseverance
are essential. Those hunters who can sit on
stand all day will be rewarded! It’s possible
to take big whitetail bucks any time during
the open season, with different techniques
being utilized depending on the location
and time of the season.
White-tailed deer
Outstanding black bear hunting in Alberta is offered in both the spring (April
1 to June 15) and fall (Aug. 25 to Nov. 30)
seasons, with both archery and rifle hunt-

ing opportunities available. B&C records
indicate that 126 Alberta black bears have
been entered in the record book. Black
bear numbers are relatively high wherever
they’re found in Alberta and our outfitters are well-equipped and knowledgeable. Much of the hunting is done from
stands over bait, but there are many spotand-stalk opportunities available, too.
Resident hunting pressure on black bears
remains relatively light, so non-residents
encounter little competition from locals.
Alberta rates in the top 10 provinces/states
producing Boone and Crockett bears in
North America and there’s the added bonus that colour-phase bears are quite common. Further, many areas in Alberta offer
hunters two black bear tags.
Moose
Alberta continues to produce some remarkably large Canada moose, a consequence of outstanding habitat and limitedentry draws for residents that has resulted
in greater carryover of trophy bulls. In
total, 164 moose from Alberta have made
the B&C record book, with over 25 per
cent of these entered since 2000. While

and we’re also home to the largest hunterkilled bighorn, the 208 3/8 ram taken by
Guinn D. Crousen in 2000. In fact, Alberta rams occupy the top eight positions
in the Boone and Crockett record book.
There’s a legitimate chance of taking a record-book ram virtually anywhere along
the majestic Rocky Mountains during the
September/October season, from Waterton Lakes National Park in the south to
the Willmore Wilderness Area in the
north. There’s also a November archery
season that offers excellent opportunity
for bow hunters.
Alberta’s mountains are rugged and
challenging to hunt, so hunters should get
in shape in preparation for hunting bighorns. Hunts range from deep wilderness
experiences on horseback to challenging
backpack hunts on the front ranges. The
scenery is fantastic and you’ll come away
with memories that will last a lifetime.
Facts & Figures:
Moose
In Alberta, moose can be found in
virtually every ecological region. Most
are classed as Canada moose, though
the smaller, but equally impressive,
Shiras moose (SCI designation) inhabits southern Alberta’s foothills and
mountains.
Alberta moose can reach live
weights of more than 1,000 pounds
and can stand taller than seven feet
at the shoulder. Antler spreads reach
in excess of five feet across, with B&C
bulls taken every year. The current
Alberta record for a typical Canada
moose is 226 7/8 B&C and it ranks as
the 10th largest Canada moose even
taken in North America.
Archery moose seasons typically
start in late August, with rifle seasons
closing on Nov. 30. Popular chamberings for moose include the .30 calibres

Facts & Figures:
Trophy sheep
Bighorn sheep are the largest of all
North American sheep species and
are an iconic symbol of Alberta’s stunning Rocky Mountain region. Sheep
populations range throughout our
mountains, spending summers in high
alpine zones before migrating to lower
altitudes in fall and winter. If you’re
a seasoned sheep hunter, you already
know about Alberta’s reputation for
outstanding sheep quality and quantity. Alberta rams occupy the top eight
positions in the Boone and Crockett
record book.
Hunting seasons for bighorn sheep
typically start in early September and
can last until the end of November.
The rut occurs in November and
December.
Trophy bighorn sheep are often
difficult to judge at a distance in the
field, so quality spotting scopes and
binoculars are a must.
Mountain terrain can test the conditioning of any hunter and demands
a rifle that’s easy to pack. Opt for a
lightweight rifle from 6.5mm up to the
.300 magnums. While shots less than
200 yards are the norm, the opportunity to shoot at longer distances may
arise, so practice at extended ranges
before your hunt.
Mule deer
Alberta is a top destination for recordbook mule deer. They’ve made a huge
comeback over the past couple of decades as a result of limited-entry draws
for resident hunters, which has allowed
bucks to grow older and bigger. Alberta is
hands down the best place in Canada for
the non-resident hunter to bag a trophy
mule deer. Seasons run from August to
November, with outstanding bucks taken
throughout the province. The “Broder
Buck,” which scored an unbelievable 355
2/8 (shot in 1926 by Ed Broder near Chip
Lake, west of Edmonton), still stands as

Facts & Figures:
the all-time, number one, non-typical
mule deer in the world. One hundred and
eight Alberta mule deer bucks are found
in the B&C book, with over half of those
taken since 2000. The hunting just keeps
getting better, year after year.
Elk
Alberta’s top typical elk (419 6/8) was
taken by Clarence Brown in the Panther
River drainage and it still stands as the
eighth largest American elk ever killed.
Sixty-one Alberta elk have been entered
in the B&C record book, with many outstanding bulls taken during the last few
years. Hunters have an opportunity to bag
a trophy bull in the prairies, mountains,
foothills, parklands and boreal zones;
our elk hunting is that good. Seasons run
August through November. As a bonus,
hunters can choose what style of hunt
they’d like to enjoy, from early-season archery hunts to mid-September rifle hunts
Elk
Bull elk are truly majestic big game
animals and every bit as wily as a
mature white-tailed buck. Extremely
challenging to hunt, they will push a
hunter’s skill and knowledge to the
limit. Veteran elk hunters will attest
that a record-book elk is one of the
most coveted and challenging animals
to place in the books.
Alberta’s archery elk seasons start
in late August, with most rifle seasons
running until the end of November.
Elk are expanding their range into Alberta’s prairies, parklands and boreal
forest from their traditional range in
the mountains and foothills, translating into exciting new opportunities
for hunters. While bulls can be taken
with calibres in the .270 class, many
hunters prefer magnum cartridges,
from 7mm up to the .300 magnums,
with premium bullets highly recommended. Big bulls can tip the scales
at 800-plus pounds and are notoriously difficult to anchor, so hunters
should make their first shot count.
season, the late September/early October
rut is extremely popular. Having a huge
bull moose respond to a skilful guide’s call
is an experience not soon forgotten. Each
year sees the opening of additional moose
hunting opportunities in the province, as
these large ungulates are rapidly expanding their range in Alberta.
Facts & Figures:
Pronghorn antelope
Pronghorn antelope are a highly
sought-after trophy and Alberta has
some of the best to offer. They’re
distributed across the wide-open
prairies in the southern region of the
province. Combining incredible speed
and vision, they’ll head for the next
township if alarmed, making them one
of the most challenging and rewarding
species to hunt. Archery seasons run
from early to late September, with rifle
season occurring in late September
through mid-October, depending on
the area. A new Alberta record was
shot in 2013 and scored an impressive
90 inches. Because of the open terrain
they call home, closing to within shooting range can be a challenge. Shots of
up to 300 yards are not uncommon.
Flat-shooting rifles in 6.5mm, .270
and 7mm chamberings are ideal.
Because of their relatively small size
and light colour, they often appear to
be farther away than they are. Consequently, a rangefinder and quality
binoculars are must-have items.
(during the rut) or late November hunts,
near the close of the season when elk leave
the high country in the mountains and migrate to the lower elevation foothills. Like
moose, Alberta’s elk are rapidly expanding
their range, creating exciting new hunting
opportunities.
Pronghorn antelope
Although Alberta is at the northern edge
of pronghorn antelope range, it has been
producing some exceptional bucks in the
past decade, with a new Alberta record
of 90 inches taken in 2013. There are 53
bucks from Alberta in the B&C record
book, with half of those taken since the
year 2000. Interestingly, trophy bucks
have been taken from most locations
throughout their Alberta range, using
both the bow and rif le, and in both the
September and October seasons. Your
chances for taking an exceptional buck are
good, but antelope inhabit open terrain
so be prepared for shots up to 300-plus
yards during the rifle season. During the
archery season, however, bucks readily
respond to decoys and it’s not uncommon
to have a dozen or more bucks within bow
range during the height of the rut.
Predators
If it’s predators you’re after, look no further
than Alberta. Wolf and coyote numbers
are at an all-time high and they’re expanding their range. During recent hunts,
hunters have reported seeing as many as a
dozen coyotes on a single quarter-section
of land on the prairies. While coyotes and
wolves are often combined with other big
game hunts, many outfitters offer winter
hunts specifically targeting these wily canines.
Cougars are managed on a quota system in Alberta and this ensures that we
can offer the best hunting for trophy cats
in North America. Alberta is the only
province or state to have three cougars
scoring 16 inches or greater in the B&C
record book. There are currently 117 cougars in the book from Alberta, with five

Facts & Figures:
Ducks & geese
Liberal limits and thriving populations characterize waterfowl hunting
in Alberta. The wet springs in the past
couple of years have created outstanding habitat conditions, suggesting this
year will again produce record numbers of birds. Millions of birds travel
through Alberta’s sky in the fall, and
whether you’re seeking Canada, snow
or speckle-bellied geese, mallards
or any of the other species of ducks
common to the province, opportunities
have never been better!
Hunting seasons start as early as
Sept. 1, running through to mid-December in some areas. And with generous daily limits of 50 white geese,
eight dark geese and eight ducks, with
three-day possession limits, you’re
guaranteed a hunt you’ll remember
forever. In 2016, Alberta enjoyed its
first spring snow goose season, creating new opportunities for those itching
to get afield after the winter.
take place in remote forested landscapes, so
hunters should be prepared for fairly rigorous conditions. This area is Alberta’s last
frontier and access is very limited.
Facts & Figures:
Cougar
Cougar guides and resident hunters
alike attest that they’ve never seen so
many of the big cats in Alberta as they
have over the past few years. Further,
they’ve expanded their range following
an explosion of deer over the past decade, so they’re being found in places
not normally associated with traditional cougar habitat. The non-resident
cougar season runs from Dec. 1 to the
last day of February, with plenty of
opportunity to bag a cat. Some Alberta
toms are huge, tipping the scales at
nearly 200 pounds. Many cougars are
taken with archery gear, but for those
looking for a little novelty in a rifle
hunt, the venerable .30-30 is also a
great option. Winter weather in Alberta
can be harsh, so come prepared for
sub-zero temperatures and deep snow.
16 | APOS | 2016
of those in the top 10, and that number
grows each season. Hunting is typically
done with hounds and hunters can expect
to encounter some spectacular terrain on
these challenging winter hunts. If you’re
looking for a big-bodied, huge-skulled
tom, look no further than Alberta.
Bison
The largest free-ranging herd of wild bison
in the world is found in the remote area of
northern Alberta bordering Wood Buffalo
National Park. Huge bulls are taken each
winter and spring by bow and rifle hunters; you can also combine these hunts with
wolves and black bears. If you’re interested
in a northern Alberta adventure that’s perhaps a little bit off the chart, consider a bison
hunt – you won’t be disappointed. Hunts
Waterfowl populations continue to thrive
and Alberta remains as the premier destination for duck and goose hunters. From
the southern prairies, north through the
parkland and on up into the Peace River
region, opportunities have never been
better. Goose hunters can select from giant Canadas, speckle-bellies, snows and
even Ross’ geese. For the avid duck hunter,
Alberta offers what is arguably the best
mallard hunting in North America, with
generous limits and an abundance of birds.
And with more than a dozen other species
of ducks present, those seeking a mixed
bag will be amply rewarded. Hunters most
commonly shoot grain stubble fields from
layout blinds, but pothole shooting offers
some of the most exciting shooting opportunities for ducks. Seasons begin in
September, though hunters enjoy tremendous field shoots for ducks and Canada
geese that extend throughout November
and into December. Alberta also offered
its first spring snow goose season in 2016,
for those looking to take advantage of their
burgeoning populations.

Waterfowl
Upland birds
Upland bird populations are on the upswing in Alberta, with populations of
ruffed grouse, grey (Hungarian) partridge, pheasants, ptarmigan, sharptailed grouse, blue grouse and spruce
grouse locally abundant throughout much
of their range in the province. The ruffed
grouse cycle is on the upswing in central
and northern Alberta; this speaks well for
those hunters after moose, elk, mule deer
and white-tailed deer who are interested
in taking birds on the side. In the south,
sharptails, pheasants and Hungarian
partridge provide considerable
opportunities as a stand-alone
species or as an added bonus after
your big game or waterfowl hunt.
Hunting pressure is generally low
for upland birds across Alberta.
Alberta’s Professional Outfitters are all licensed and insured,
and your deposit is protected

occur. With more than 460
qualified professionals, Alberta’s outfitters are ready to make
your dream hunt a reality. To

While all APOS outfitter-guides are committed
to providing their clients with the highest level of
service, it’s important for any travelling hunter to
ask the right questions to ensure their hunt is going
to meet their expectations. Following are 10 recommendations to help steer you in the right direction:
2. Every APOS outfitter-guide should provide you with
a detailed hunt contract. Ensure you carefully read this
contract, and feel free to contact your outfitter with any
questions or concerns you may have. The contract is in
place to ensure that your trip goes exactly as planned and
that all your expectations are met. It’s prudent to clarify all
20 | APOS | 2016
details well in advance of your trip.
3. Although it may seem like an unnecessary precaution,
make sure you know the outfitter’s cancellation policy in
advance and consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance. Unexpected health, family or work problems can
sometimes prevent you from taking that dream trip.
Depending upon how far in advance you have booked your
trip, and how much time is left before your departure date,
you will likely have paid anywhere from 25 - 100% of the
total hunt price. Protection of that investment will provide
peace of mind should unexpected problems arise.

1. In Alberta, every outfitter and/or guide is legally
required to be a member of the Alberta Professional
Outfitters Society (APOS). If an outfitter is not a member
of APOS, he or she is not legally permitted to guide in the
province of Alberta.
4. There are no guarantees in hunting
and you should be very suspicious of any
outfitter who offers one. However, you
obviously want an outfitter with a proven
track record. When asking about game
populations and harvest success, make sure
that you understand what those numbers
are based on; some outfitters count only
game taken, while others base success on
opportunities to harvest. Individual outfitters may offer quality over quantity, or vice
versa, so it’s important to decide what’s
most important to you when selecting an
outfitter. Be upfront about whether you are
looking for a record-book animal or just a
nice representation of the species.
Certain species of game follow seasonal
migration patterns. A good outfitter will
know where game is likely to be found
at the time of your trip. Despite that, a
number of unmanageable factors, such as
unseasonable weather, can intervene. Ask
your outfitter about alternate locations or
camps that you could be moved to in such
cases.
5. Nothing says more about the quality of
an outfitter’s operation than repeat business. For this reason, many top outfitters
are fully booked a year or two in advance.
Most outfitters will give you contacts for
client references — don’t be shy about
calling these references to confirm what
the outfitter has been telling you. Just
make sure to keep you phone calls brief and
during an appropriate time, while respecting time zone differences. When speaking
with a reference, ask if he or she has ever
been on a similar trip elsewhere. If the
reference is a seasoned outdoorsman, having taken numerous guided trips, you can
probably rely heavily on their opinion.
6. Alberta’s outfitters have top-quality
guides working for them but guiding is
a difficult job and, much like with other
occupations, all guides are not created
equally. Moreover, just like their clients,
some guides are very quiet, while others
are quite talkative and social. Although a
guide and client may only be together for
a week or so, they will spend a lot of time
together during that week, occasionally
during stressful situations. Having a guide
with a personality compatible with yours
can make a big difference in terms of team
chemistry. With that in mind, feel free to
ask the outfitter which guide he thinks will

The types of beds, the temperature in the
sleeping quarters, whether you will be
sharing accommodations, and the type
of washroom facility available are all
good details to know in advance.
If your trip will be American Plan (meals
included), ask about the type, quality
and quantity of the food served, and by
all means inform the outfitter in advance
about any particular food requests or allergies you may have.
9. One of the more common causes of
disappointment with a guided hunting
trip is a misunderstanding over the hunting methods to be used. Specific strategies for any given species are simply more
effective in some areas and at particular
times, but not all sportsmen are necessarily interested in or comfortable with
every hunting method. Make sure you
know in advance, and are comfortable
with, how you will be hunting through
the bulk of your trip. Ask your outfitter
about typical shooting situations and
ranges, and be honest about your own
shooting abilities and experience. Most
limitations can be accommodated if
identified in advance.
10. When speaking with both your outfitter and the references, make sure to ask
the simple question, “Is there anything
else I should know?” Most people can
usually come up with at least one important consideration you should be aware
of in advance of your trip that perhaps
hadn’t yet been mentioned. 

Helpful
Hints
for Hunters Travelling to Alberta
Make sure you’re prepared for your guided hunt.
Here’s everything you need to know about
travelling to, and hunting in, Alberta.
www.apos.ab.ca |
27
You will be required to clear Canadian
Customs, regardless of whether you fly
or drive. You will need to present a valid
passport at the border crossing. At Canadian Customs, you will be asked several
questions about the purpose of your trip,
the length of your stay, where you live,
who you are hunting with, etc. It’s a good
idea to have some written verification (like
a contract, or at the very least a brochure,
from your outfitter) to show the address of
your destination. At this point, all alcohol,
tobacco and firearms must be declared.
(See Importing firearms.) This process usually goes quickly and you should soon be
on your way.
2. Refusal to enter into Canada
Criminal records, even a DUI, can prevent travel into Canada. If you have any
concerns, visit Canada Border Crossing
28 | APOS | 2016
Services at www.bordercrossing.ca or
call 1-800-438-7020 and ask for Brenda
or Mitch.
If you have any type of criminal conviction, you should notify your outfitter
or call Canada Border Crossing Services
well in advance so that clearance can be
arranged.
3. Hunting eligibility
Hunters who have a hunting licence suspension (in Alberta or elsewhere) are prohibited from applying for or obtaining a
recreational hunting licence in Alberta.
For further information, you can contact
Alberta Fish & Wildlife Enforcement
Field Services at 1-780-427-4943.
Youth hunters are welcome in Alberta,
but must be at least 12 years old to hunt
under their own licence. All youths less
than 16 years of age require parental
permission to purchase a licence, and all
youths under 18 require adult supervision
to hunt with a firearm.
4. Legal firearms for Alberta
Your outfitter-guide will provide you
with suggestions for specific calibres for
your targeted game species. In Alberta,
it is unlawful to hunt game with a calibre
less than .23 or a shotgun calibre/gauge of
less than .410. Centerfire magazines are
limited to five-round capacities; shotguns
are limited to carrying three rounds. It is
unlawful to hunt big game with ammunition that contains non-expanding bullets.
This is not an extensive list of the regulations regarding firearms; please contact
the Canadian Firearms Program (1-800731-4000; www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfppcaf/) or your APOS outfitter-guide for
more information.
You are, of course, allowed to bring
your personal hunting firearms with you
Duane Rosenkranz, Nick Trehearne
1. Entrance into Canada
— this includes rifles and/or shotguns.
Some restrictions apply, so please refer to
the Canadian Firearms Program website
for definitions of non-restricted, restricted
and prohibited firearms at www.rcmpgrc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf. Archery equipment
does not fall under these requirements,
and therefore has no declaration form.
For your firearms, a simple one-page
form must be filled out to obtain a temporary Canadian Firearms Permit. Your
outfitter should provide this with your
hunt contract. This form (CAFC 909)
can also be downloaded or mailed to you
well in advance from the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police Canadian Firearms Program, as listed above. Follow the links on
the left-hand side for visitors/non-residents and then download the Non-Resident Firearms Declaration form (CAFC
909). Completing this in advance should
reduce the time required to clear customs.
A confirmed declaration costs $25 (at
time of press, so please confirm this), regardless of the number of firearms listed
on it. It is only valid for the person who
signs it and for those firearms listed on
the declaration. If you are visiting with
others who will be using firearms in Canada, each of you will need to meet these
requirements. The declaration must be
signed in front of a Customs Officer.
5. Importing ammunition
Non-residents can import 200 rounds
of ammunition duty-free, for personal
use and/or hunting purposes. If you are
flying, many airlines have weight restrictions for ammunition. Alternatively, you
can check with your outfitter about the
cost and availability of your required ammunition in the area you will be hunting.
In most areas you can generally purchase
common calibres/gauges easily — and in
major centers like Edmonton or Calgary,
finding a wide selection of hunting ammunition for virtually any firearm is easy.
6. Bow hunting in Alberta
Bow hunting is extremely popular in Alberta, with trophy deer, elk, bear, sheep,
pronghorn antelope, moose and predators taken each year. Bow hunters enjoy
seasons for most species that start as early

as late August and last until the end of
rif le season. Hunters must purchase a
Bow Hunting Permit in addition to their
licence/tag — your outfitter will advise
and assist you with all the logistics.
All hunting bows must have a draw
weight of at least 40 pounds at a 28-inch
draw, and all arrows must be at least 24
inches in length and have a broadhead
with at least a 7/8-inch cutting diameter.
There are several archery-only zones in
Alberta. See the Alberta Hunting Regu-

9. What should I wear
while hunting in Alberta?
There are no regulations in Alberta requiring specific clothing colours. Since
the weather can change abruptly, layering is important as it allows you to adapt to
changing weather patterns. A moisturewicking base layer, one or more insulating layers and a windproof/waterproof/
breathable outer layer are best. This allows
you to layer up when it’s cold and peel it
off if it warms up. Of course, warm and
f lexible gloves, insulated headgear and
warm socks are also important. Many
hunters choose to wear scent-blocking
garments. Camouf lage can be tailored
for the terrain and conditions you hunt –
northern boreal forest, prairie grassland,
32 | APOS | 2016
snow, etc. If you’re hunting from a treestand or ground blind, consider over-boots
and over-mitts for added warmth. Finally,
ensure all clothing is quiet, soft material.
Your outfitter will be able to provide you
with specific clothing recommendations
for the time and location of your hunt.
10. Alberta’s climate
Alberta is known for having warm, dry
summers and cold winters with heavy and
frequent snowfall. Fall hunting seasons,
however, can see extremely varied weather
conditions. During the early archery seasons, often starting in late August and
running through September, average
temperatures hover between 50 and 55
degrees Fahrenheit. In October, average
temperatures drop to between 35 and 45
degrees, but can be much colder. November average temperatures are below freezing, typically between 0 and 32 degrees.
December and January see some of the
coldest temperatures, regularly dipping to
well below zero. During spring hunting
seasons, hunters can expect mild temperatures, averaging around 30 to 50 degrees.
11. Alberta’s time zone
Alberta is on Mountain Standard Time
and observes Daylight Savings Time.
12. Currency exchange
The US dollar has recently been trading
at about $1.30 Canadian. Visit a currency
exchange website for up-to-the-day exchange rates. Exchanging US dollars
for Canadian dollars is easily done at any
bank in Alberta or in currency exchange
kiosks at the Calgary and Edmonton International Airports. If you require extra
cash, ATMs are readily found in any town
across the province. Fees may apply.
Credit cards are almost always accepted for virtually any purchase throughout
Canada — Visa and Mastercard are the
most widely accepted, followed by American Express. Discover Card is not widely
accepted in Canada.
13. Accommodations in Alberta
APOS outfitters will provide their guests
with many options for accommodation before, during and after your hunt. If you’d
like to find out more about Alberta, and
our many tourist attractions, visit www.
travelalberta.com.
14. Transporting game and trophies
Exporting your game back home is a relatively simple procedure, as long as you export the animal (head, hide, meat, etc.) as
personal baggage. With the exception of
wolf and bison, your hunting licence will
act as your export permit — keep it handy
as you leave Canada. You will also need to
fill out a US Import/Export Permit (Form
177). Although these can be picked up at
customs, the process is simplified if this
form is filled out in advance; your outfitter

checked baggage allowance. W hen
checking a firearm, you must declare to
the representative that you’re checking a
firearm (if there is a security checkpoint
prior to the ticket counter, you must declare the existence of a firearm to security
personnel). Present firearm(s) unloaded
and sign a Firearms Unloaded declaration. Lock the firearm(s) in a hard-sided,
crush-proof container and retain the key
or combination. Maintain the entry permits in your possession and ensure that all
ammunition is packed separate from your
firearm(s) in the manufacturer’s original
package or securely packed in plastic, carbon fiber, wooden or metal boxes.
will provide more details.
Transporting your game home is obviously easier if you are driving, but the
requirements are still the same if you fly,
provided you comply with your airline’s
procedures.
You may be checked by Alberta Fish
& Wildlife Enforcement officers at the
airport or when crossing the border back
home. This process should be straightforward, provided you have your WIN
number and license(s) handy. Know the
name of your outfitter and guide, as well
as a general idea of where you were hunting. Remember that, while your licence
serves as your export permit for most species, you cannot take home wildlife parts/
meat, other than that which you personally harvested, without an additional export permit.
Each species has slightly different export requirements, so check with your
outfitter for those specifics and plan in
advance what you will do with your harvested animals. Be aware that it is unlawful to allow the edible meat of any game
bird or big game animal, except cougar or
bear, to be wasted, destroyed, spoiled or
abandoned; you, as the hunter, are primarily responsible for the care of that meat.
Most outfitters can help arrange for
meat processing, but due to the limited
duration of many hunts it may be a problem for your animal to be completely
processed before your departure. Plan
ahead and make arrangements with your
outfitter if you intend to take home large
quantities of meat.
There are many exceptional taxidermists in Alberta, and your outfitter may
even have special rates with some of them.
When booking a taxidermist, it’s wise to
find out not only what the expected turnaround times are, but also the cost of shipping a completed trophy to you. This can
be a very simple option for getting your trophy home, but there will be extra fees and
charges for items such as export permits,
packaging, shipping and brokerage fees.
15. Other helpful tips
Some hunts can be very physically demanding, while others require very little
physical activity. In any case, being in
reasonable physical condition will make
every hunt more pleasant — and increase
your odds of success.
Ensure you leave extra time on both
ends of your trip for unexpected delays.
Being stressed when trying to get to or
leave camp on a very tight schedule can
put a damper on your entire trip.
International mobile phone roaming
rates can be very high. Check with your
service provider before entering Canada
to avoid unexpected charges.
Travel medical insurance is well worth
the cost. It’s usually just a few dollars a day
and can save you thousands of dollars in
case of an emergency.
Canada is officially on the metric sys-
tem — distances, speed limits and temperatures will be in metric; however, most
Canadians are fluent in both metric and
imperial measures.

You don’t have to be a bow hunter to appreciate the merits of getting up close to
white-tailed deer. Simply put, if you can
get close and stay undetected, your chances improve significantly – rifle or bow.
The first challenge, of course, is finding
deer. Early in the season, whitetails are
still in their summer bedding and feeding
routines, making them relatively easy to
pattern. Locate a desirable buck and you’ll
find its movements reasonably predictable;
identify what trails it uses most frequently
and you’ve got a good chance of getting a
close-range shooting opportunity. Your
best chances are at first light and in the late
evening; there is reduced deer movement
during the midday hours.
As bucks shed their velvet and begin
preparing for the rut, their travel routines
expand so they can inventory doe groups
within their home range. By late October,
the pre-rut is well underway and movement is no longer restricted to just morning and evening – deer will be on the move
throughout the day. Available daylight
hours nudge both bucks and does into
their annual breeding cycle, and bucks
aggressively mark their territory with rubs
and scrapes as they monitor doe groups.
It’s during the pre-rut and peak-rut when
deer hunters have the best opportunity to
get in close. Bucks have their attention focused on breeding and will let their guard
down as they move about, searching for
hot does. By carefully selecting probable
ambush sites in areas where does frequently travel, you can increase your odds of a
close-range encounter.
During the pre- and peak-rut period,
rattling and calling work very well. Rattling generally produces best in areas with
a higher buck-to-doe ratio. By emulating
the natural sounds of a buck or a doe, along
with a physical antler-on-antler confrontation, you can experience great success in
attracting bucks.
Physical confrontations between bucks
are about expressing and determining
dominance and eventual breeding rights.
Bucks are attracted to the sound of their
peers sparring, not so much because they
want to fight, but more out of curiosity;
they want to know who their competition
is.
When calling, use a grunt tube, doe
bleat and rattling antlers in combination,
especially during the pre- and peak-rut
periods. The “snort-wheeze” is a last ditch,
but often effective, tactic that can bring
hesitant or disinterested bucks in for a
closer look. Rattling and calling combinations work best from mid-October to
mid-November.
Add scent and visual attractants like a
doe or buck decoy to the equation and you
may well end up with a combination bucks
can’t resist. Doe-in-estrus and dominantbuck scents, when carefully applied to existing scrapes or mock scrapes in proximity to your stand or blind, are some of the
most effective tools a hunter can use.
Speaking of scents, remember that
whitetails have hypersensitive noses. Use
odor-eliminating sprays, scent-blocking
garments, scent-free soaps and deodorants
to reduce your own odor.
Finally, one of the smartest moves any
hunter can make is to use the wind to his
advantage. Select your ambush sites carefully based on deer movement patterns,
ensuring that air currents will carry your
scent away, and you’re well on your way to
getting up close to a trophy-class whitetail
buck.
Stalking mule deer
Mule deer roam the open and mixedbrush country of Alberta, making them
a challenge to sneak up on. They rely on

Whitetail hunters: Get up close
their vision more than their senses of smell
or hearing to alert them to danger, and
therein is the clue to getting within shooting range. (But don’t forget, they do have
excellent hearing and will swivel their ears
like antennae if they sense anything out
of the ordinary.)
When hunting mule deer, position
yourself where you have good sight lines,
then let your binoculars do the work.
Take a stand near something that breaks
your silhouette, and then remain still and
quiet. In Alberta, regulations permit full
camouflage, which helps make it virtually
impossible for deer to spot you. Watch for
that signature white rump patch on mule
deer, which stands out in poor light and
catches sunlight during the middle of the
day.
You may see a mule deer buck out in
the open at any time of day from midNovember until season’s end. Mule deer
often move slowly about their home range
in search of does, stopping from time to
time to check out a scent, rarely moving
quickly unless frightened.
Bucks will follow the lead doe, gener-

ally at the tail end of a harem when the
herd is on the move. If you spot does moving out of cover to feed, stay alert for a
buck to emerge once it believes the coast
is clear. When alerted to trouble, bucks
often break from the herd.
When patience, camouflage, glassing
and silence are used in unison, shot opportunities for mule deer will follow.
Black bears: Baiting or
spot-and-stalk
Alberta is open to regulated bear baiting,
so you can hunt over stationary attractant
sites in both spring and fall. Many APOS
guides use baits to great success – and to
take advantage of Alberta’s generous twobear limit.
Keep your eyes open when watching
a bait site. Bears will often move in cau38 | APOS | 2016
tiously to inspect the provisions, sneaking
in silently to grab a mouthful of food before disappearing in a flash. This is where
baiting really shows its value, as hunters can examine every bear and make a
thoughtful decision as to whether to shoot
or not.
Location is all-important to those
hunters who prefer to spot-and-stalk. Beginning in late April, south facing slopes
and lush, clover-laden cut lines in the
foothills and boreal mixed-wood forest
become great places to begin your search.
In the fall, standing oat fields can be productive places to find and stalk bruins. As
bears rely heavily on their senses of smell
and hearing, and less so on their eyesight,
taking advantage of prevailing winds and
topography will allow a hunter to stalk
within range.

Alberta moose: Pre-,
peak- and post-rut
Alberta is home to some massive moose
and hunts for trophy bulls can be successful throughout the season, though tactics
differ whether you’re hunting pre-, peakor post-rut bulls.
Moose are secretive at the best of times,
but the early season can be an especially
tricky period to hunt them. One of the
most effective tactics for pre-rut moose is
sitting on stand near a mineral lick. One
thing is certain, especially if the weather is
warm – when there is a spring or mineral
lick nearby, moose know about it and will
eventually visit. The key lies in being there

especially successful; walking down a
moose is an exhilarating experience.
Elk: Calling trophy bulls
Calling in a trophy bull elk is one of the
most exciting experiences big game hunting has to offer. There are, however, a great
many nuances to calling elk and understanding their behavior will go a long way
to pulling an Alberta bull to within shooting range.
Contrary to what many believe, when
a big herd bull answers your bugle he’s
not challenging a rival, but trying to outadvertise him and keep the attention of
his cows. The last thing in the world the
elk wants at that point is a fight. His best
defense is to simply gather his cows and
move them away. He’ll keep bugling as he
does this, to let his harem know he’s still
in charge, but the theory that every bull is
looking for a fight is inaccurate. Thank-
fully, this behavior is easy to exploit when
you understand it.
To do this, get into the heart of prime
elk country and begin bugling at first light.
It shouldn’t take long to get an answer.
Then, put your bugle away and get as close
to the bull as you possibly can before bugling again. If you can close the distance
to 100 yards or less, your odds will greatly
increase.
Once you get in close, sound another
long, inquiring bugle, followed by a few
chuckles. If everything goes according to
plan, you’ll be close enough to the bull that
he won’t have time to gather his cows and
move off. He’ll have to check you out, perhaps even challenge you. If he does, keep
the pressure on, bugling right back every
time he bugles. Get as close to him as possible, raking trees with a broken branch
to imitate a bull thrashing his antlers. It’s
also a good time to cow-call in an attempt
photos by Duane Rosenkranz and Nick Trehearne
when they show up, requiring that hunters
demonstrate equal parts confidence and
patience.
With the peak of the rut typically occurring during the first half of October,
moose hunters enjoy the most vocal and
active hunts from the third week in September to the end of the second week in
November. By emulating the bawls of a
cow in heat, bulls can be drawn to within
shooting range, and a combination of cow
calls, bull grunts, antler clashing and raking of branches can be used to pull bulls to
within spitting distance.
Hunting moose post-rut requires different tactics altogether. Locate the best
thermal cover in proximity to succulent
browse and you’re on the right track to
locating a bull. Look for traditional spoor
like rubs, fresh beds, tracks or droppings
to confirm that moose are in the area. And
when there’s fresh snow, tracking can be
to convince the bull he’s losing control of
his harem.
Things can get pretty intense at this
point, but keep the pressure on; don’t give
the bull a way out other than confronting
you. Keep an eye out for satellite bulls as
well, as they’ll see this as an opportunity
to sneak in and cut a cow out of the herd.
If all goes well, it’s not uncommon to have
two or three separate bulls approaching
from different directions.
Bighorn sheep:
High-altitude tips
Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep offer a
challenging Alberta hunt, often in difficult terrain, but the payoff could be a new
world record.
The best advice for any sheep hunter
coming to Alberta is to get in shape; everything else will be relatively easy if you
can get up and down the mountain. A
multi-month regime of strength and cardiovascular exercise will go a long way to
ensuring you’re in the physical condition
required to scale mountains in pursuit of
sheep. On a related note, if you haven’t
www.apos.ab.ca |
41
Pronghorn antelope
Alberta’s pronghorn antelope roam the
wide-open spaces of the province’s southeast and are generally not all that difficult
to locate. It’s the stalk that’s the challenge.
The successful antelope hunter must
42 | APOS | 2016
glass a great deal of country, from vantage points that don’t betray his location.
Patience is key. Antelope have amazing
vision and even slight movement will
catch their attention from great distances.
When glassing, position yourself below
ridgelines or, if necessary, carefully watch
from a hilltop while using natural cover
such as rocks, draws, hills, sagebrush or
a fence line. Avoid sky lining yourself at
all costs. If you don’t locate antelope after
thoroughly glassing an area, move on to a
new location and repeat the process.
If you do locate antelope, a spotting
scope can save a lot of effort by affirming an animal’s trophy quality. If the buck
you’ve spotted is of the quality you seek,
it’s time to plan a stalk, though this can
prove more difficult than it may appear.
Not only do antelope possess keen eyes,
the country they occupy frequently offers very little in the way of concealment.
Using natural terrain to best advantage,
slowly move in closer and closer. In the
archery season decoys work wonders, and
in all seasons camouf lage that is well-
suited to the open grasslands is of great
advantage.
If terrain prohibits a successful stalk,
erecting a ground blind near a water source
can also work well. Your APOS guide will
determine which strategies to use and will
do everything in his power to ensure your
success.
Mid-winter coyote hunts
Alberta has abundant coyote populations.
The province is truly one of North America’s coyote-hunting hotspots and December, January and February are considered
to be the best coyote hunting months. This
is, in part, thanks to the increased mobility
provided as the snow crusts over, a relative scarcity of food, and an eagerness to
socialize and breed — the “perfect storm”
for coyote hunters.
Some female coyote go into heat as early as January, but most peak in mid to late
February. At that time, hunters have an
excellent opportunity to see two or more
coyotes together. If you draw one in, others are often eager to follow. Use a mouth
spent much previous time in the mountains, you may wish to arrive early to acclimatize yourself.
A quality spotting scope and binoculars are a must. Glassing the valleys, scree
slopes and peaks of the Alberta Rockies in
search of trophy rams will save you a lot of
boot leather and time.
Speaking of boot leather, make sure
you’ve got a sturdy, broken-in pair of insulated hiking boots, and always wear
wool or polypropylene socks, never cotton. Multi-layered, warm and waterproof
clothing is also necessary, including a
moisture-wicking base layer.
There are varying opinions in terms of
rifle selection, but lightweight is a benefit,
and both the rifle and hunter should be
capable of 300-yard accuracy.
or electronic call to howl or emulate the
sounds of wounded prey to bring coyotes
running. Combine this strategy with the
use of a full-body coyote decoy and a prey
species motion decoy, such as a rabbit, and
you’re well on your way to drawing in a
wily coyote. In Alberta, it’s not uncommon to see 20 or more coyotes daily.
Waterfowl shooting tips that work
Alberta’s waterfowl hunts are second to
none, with birds in the millions f lying
through the province and providing outstanding opportunities. Notwithstanding
that, shooting ducks and geese can always
be challenging.
A common mistake made by many
hunters is shooting into the flock rather
than focusing on an individual bird; it’s
imperative to select and shoot at a single
target. Seasoned gunners pick a bird, ensure their sight plane is level along the
rib, then swing and shoot, remembering
to follow through. Many advise taking a
lower bird first, then progressively higher
birds with your remaining shots. Recoil
will help raise your shotgun as you follow
through to the second bird.
Wingshooting requires the gunner to
point, not aim, and then pull the trigger
quickly. Maintain a level sight plane and
focus on your target, not aiming with the
barrel or even the bead. When your instincts tell you you’re on, pull the trigger
and follow through.
Remember to consider the appropriate
lead before taking the shot. The amount
of lead required depends on the angle of
the shot presented. Moving targets can
cross from left to right or vice versa, approach from head-on or from behind, or
any combination of distance and angle.
If you find that you are missing crossing
targets, try doubling your lead. With some
experimentation and practice, you should
catch on to the required lead in short order.
For oncoming and straightaway shots, the
required lead may be slightly above, below
or dead on depending on the speed and
height of the target. Again, experimentation will confirm the required lead. While
it’s possible to merely point at a target and
pull the trigger, experienced wingshooters
will tell you the correct way to shoot at a
flying target involves using either a sustained lead or a pull-through technique.
Both work; the key to each is to keep your
barrel moving. 
