Your Quilt Channel Crew
Welcome to Paducah!
This year the Quilt Channel is celebrating it’s 25th
Anniversary. What began as a vision of our founder Terry Schmitt has
successfully evolved into a valuable and entertaining service for viewers
throughout the world. Terry’s appreciation of quilting, and his passion for
documenting quiltmakers and their art led him to develop the Quilt Channel.
While Terry passed away in 2010, the team here at the Quilt Channel are proud
and honored to continue his legacy.
Over the years The Quilt Channel has produced thousands of hours of quilt
related programming, taped thousands of quilts and quilt artists, plus we’ve
met thousands of visitors who travel to this wonderful city.
Though the years technology has changed, and we have changed with it. This
year the Quilt Channel will be streaming it’s programing worldwide and we are
excited to showcase our area internationally. What was once available only
to those who made the pilgrimage to Paducah, can now be seen around the
globe.
Thank you for being a part of the Quilt Channel’s 25th Anniversary.

Linda Schmitt and Alan Jackson

Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics This nine-part documentary series hosted by Shelly Zegert takes a fresh look at quilts and spreads
the word about their unique position at the center of a startlingly broad grid of topics, ranging from
women’s studies to the contemporary art market.
Episode 3: The Quilt Marketplace
Shelly Zegart takes you behind the scenes in the quilt marketplace—past and present—where
you will meet its players, learn its unwritten rules, and penetrate its secrets.
Episode 4: What is Art?
A quilt is the perfect test case for a dozen theories about what makes art, well…art.
Episode 5: Gee’s Bend: “The Most Famous Quilts in America?”
Join us as we trace the journey of the quilts of Gees Bend from the clotheslines of the South
to the exhibition walls of the country’s greatest museums.
Episode 6: How Quilts have been Viewed and Collected
Nearly a century after quilts were first collected and exhibited, they’ve come a long way, baby.
Watch as we trace their slow incursion into museum collections, then to gallery walls.
Episode 8: Quilt Nation – 20,000,000 and Counting!
“Quilt making,” as one quilt maker says, “is the greatest mass movement nobody ever heard
of.” The population of the American quilt world outnumbers those of many small countries, and
yet most outsiders remain unaware of its size, diversity, and economic clout.
Episode 9: Quilt Scholarship: Romance and Reality
The history of quilt scholarship in America is more relevant—and far more interesting—than
some might think.
