Introduction
Mellieha
...your gateway to diversity and beauty
Mellieħa, the idyllic seaside town which is situated
in the north of Malta, is a popular summer
destination for both domestic as well as foreign
visitors. This locality boasts several very interesting
features and cultural attributes which make it the
ideal resort for an all-year round experience.
The town of Mellieħa is well known for its historic
Marian Sanctuary which dates back to the early
years of Christianity and is reputed to have been
one of the places visited by St. Paul himself during
his three month stay on the island while en route
from Palestine to Rome. The area also has a number
of fortifications dating back to the 16th Century and
as recent as the mid 20th Century. But the locality
also boasts of the broad areas of natural habitats
that are ideal for walking, cycling and eco trails.
This village is situated at the very top of a hill which
Introduction
overlooks the picturesque Għadira Bay. At the
edge of the village is the Sanctuary dedicated to
Our Lady of Mellieħa. For centuries this has been a
shrine for pilgrims seeking solace. With its typical
village square; the old monastery and Belvedere
adjacent to the sanctuary, quaint village houses
and picturesque views over the bay and ridges,
Mellieħa is surely a place for relaxation - whether
it is that quick dip in the clear blue Mediterranean
(13 beaches and Malta’s best diving sites ), a walk
along the ridges(Majjistral Nature Park and Selmun)
or a discovery of some of the old forts ( Red Tower,
Tunnara Museum, White Tower, Selmun Tower and
World War II Shelters ) and chapels, you will find
Mellieha has a lot to offer the discerning visitor.
On the outskirts of Mellieħa there is the hamlet of
Manikata. The town of Mellieħa has a good number
of hotels which vary from 3 to 5 star.
In 2009, the locality of Mellieħa was the recipient
of the EDEN award from the European Union
(European Destination of Excellence), for its
sustainable initiatives; it succeeded in achieving the
title of excellence relating to tourism and protected
areas. The principal reasons for this success can
be indicated as: the involvement of the local
community; the dedication and strategic vision of
its very active NGOs supported by the Local Council
and the locality's own assets which have been
exalted without being irreversibly exploited.
Through these initiatives, Mellieħa has managed
to maintain its contribution to the principle
of sustainable development by enabling the
enjoyment of Mellieħa's rural and traditional assets
for present and future generations.
The rural dimension has been enhanced thanks to
the utilisation of local products that belong to the
Maltese eno-gastronomic identity. The presentation
of these products happens in a scenario such as
that of the typical streets of the locality. Both the
visitor and the local resident live in a wholesome
and comprehensive experience of rural life and
dimension. These initiatives ensure that the locality
of Mellieħa develops as a destination for all seasons
and not just a summer resort.

Majjistral Park
Selmun / Mġiebaħ
Sprawled over an area lying on a series of hills and
valleys Mellieħa enjoys beautiful and panoramic
views all around. It is surrounded with beautiful
fertile valleys like Ġnien Ingraw, San Niklaw,
Imġiebaħ and Għajn Żejtuna, which all provide
excellent country walks, especially from Autumn
till Springtime. In these valleys many crops are
grown all the year round, with the farmers having
fresh spring underground natural water and shelter
from the prevailing winds. These valleys also
provided shelter for the first inhabitants who came
to Malta more than 8000 years ago for they are
honeycombed with numerous big caves, a haven
for the first troglodytic community to inhabit our
Islands.
The neighbouring village of Manikata is the centre
of an Agro-Tourism Project and it is incorporated
in Malta’s National Park,(Majjistral Park) the NorthWest Nature and History Park, where Heritage walks
are organised throughout the year. Similarly the tiny

hamlet of Selmun offers a majestic Palace which
used to be the summer residence of the Order’s
Grand Masters together with some very beautiful
walks overlooking Mġiebaħ Valley and the slopes
towards St. Paul’s Islands and beyond.
Down in Mellieħa Bay we find the Bird Sanctuary, a
fresh water haven for migrating birds. It offers bird
watching facilities for all ages together with guided
tours around the whole complex. Incidentally this
bird sanctuary lies exactly where the old Roman
salt pans used to be and from where Mellieħa,
from the word ‘meló’ which means ‘salt’, derived its
name. Further up from this Sanctuary, on the clayey
slopes towards the Red Tower, lies ‘Foresta 2000’,
a Natura 2000 site where hundreds of trees have
been planted by children.

Selmun & Mgiebah
Selmun lies to the East of Mellieħa and North
of Xemxija. This area is scheduled and is rich in
natural, archaeological, historical and rural heritage.
Moreover, it is a place where visitors can enjoy a
number of activities including exploring the cultural
landscape, trekking, swimming, agro-tourism,
archaeological exploration, picnics and others.
The heritage trail winding along the terraced fields
of Mġiebaħ, passing through the sheer cliffs at
Għajn Ħadid and descending the slopes of Il-Blata,
unfolds the rich cultural past of this area. This trail
is enriched by Prehistoric and Punic-Roman sites
still to be excavated, the cart-ruts and Late Classical
Tombs. Through this trail one can find fortifications
of the Knights and British period, testifying the
dramatic instances the people inhabiting this area
had to experience. The Selmun trail is impregnated
with the rural heritage reflecting the daily life of
the Selmun inhabitants. Terraced fields of an 18th
century giardino, the Maltese corbelled huts or
girna and the rock-cut apiaries, witness the exploit
of the early modern inhabitants of Selmun. Another
significant landmark is St. Paul’s islets, held as the
traditional shipwreck site of the Saint.
Selmun / Mġiebaħ
Places of Interest
Also forming part of the trail are a number of late
16th to early 19th century structures namely a
Baroque palace and a hamlet which comprises a
complex of six small farmhouses infront of the
palace. The Mellieħa Local Council is utilizing EU
funds to convert this complex into a cultural and
information centre which will house a multimedia
presentation of the historical, cultural and natural
heritage of the area and will offer unique experiences
through experimental archaeology spanning from
prehistoric to pre-industrial times, occasional
festivals and special activities throughout the year.
St. Paul’s Islands
According to tradition St Paul was shipwrecked
on these islands in the year 60 AD. These are two
islands connected by a shallow isthmus and are
often referred to as Selmun Islands, the name being
inherited from Marco di Maria, a member of the
Salamone family. In 1576 Marco was returning to
Malta when he was chased by a pirate vessel and
he managed to pass his vessel through the narrow
channel between the Island and the mainland by
using a very risky manoeuvre. The pirate ship failed
in its attempt and ran aground. In return Marco was
given these Islands as a present by Grand Master
La Cassiere. The statue of St. Paul, the work of
Segismondo Dimech from Valletta and Salvatore
Dimech from Lija, was erected around 1844 and
H.H. Pope John Paul II visited the site by sea during
his visit to Malta in 1990.

Park tal-Majjistral
Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park in Mellieħa is
Malta’s first natural national park. Set up in 2007 and
managed by the Heritage Parks Federation it covers
the coastal stretch from Golden Bay to Anchor Bay
spreading inland to the village of Manikata. Most of
this area forms part of the Natura 2000 network of
protected areas in the EU.
The park with its variety of habitats and landscapes
is home to more than 400 species of plants and a
variety of local as well as migratory animals.
The park is free for anyone to enjoy at all times as
long as it's nature is respected at all times. Entrance
is allowed on foot or by bicycle. Buses run to
Golden Bay and to Mellieħa Bay which are two good
starting points for a walk in the area. If you come by
car, parking can be found near Manikata Church or
near Golden Bay.

Merill Eco Tours
Merill Eco Tours provide excursions that feature
the best of nature, tradition, culture and history in
Mellieħa. We make use of eco-friendly transport
throughout the tour to visit various interesting
locations. A typical Maltese lunch prepared with
local ingredients will be an excellent treat while
enjoying the view of Mediterranean vegetation
and a distant sandy beach. Endemic flora and
fauna are highlights of the tour, while the Tower
of St. Agatha(Red Tower) and the sheltered church
courtyard give a historic dimension to the tour
combined with breath-taking views overlying the
rocky shore.

Mellieħa Parish Church
Churches & Religious Niches
When the ancient Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa
was becoming too small for the ever-growing
Mellieħa community it was felt necessary to build a
new church. Its foundation stone was laid in 1883
and it took 14 years of voluntary work for it to be
completed. The stones were cut from an Armier
quarry and brought over on carts by the locals. It
was blessed in 1897 though still without its belfries
which were built later in 1920. Various architectural
works and paintings embellish this unique church.
Comparatively the Parish church in Manikata is a
very modern one though initiated in 1961 on plans
prepared by architect Richard England. Like the
Mellieħa church it was built by volunteers after
many fund-raising activities. It is a beautiful church
which blends perfectly with its surrounds and it is
dedicated to Saint Joseph.
Places of Interest
Selmun Chapel, which was formerly housed
inside Selmun Palace, was built in the 1980s and
similarly was built with funds emanating from
local collections. It is dedicated to Our Lady of
Ransom, going back to the times of the Monte Della
Redenzione or ransoming of the slaves during the
times of the Order of Saint John.
The Grotto of Our Lady, an
underground crypt in the
heart of Mellieħa and very
near to the Sanctuary, was
constructed by Mario de
Vasi, a Sicilian merchant
who was greatly devoted
towards Our Lady. He
paid for all expenses for
the passageway and crypt
to be dug to create a small
chapel where fresh spring
water flows beneath a
white statue of Our Lady.
Another small chapel dedicated to the Immaculate
Conception stands at the very end of the Aħrax
peninsula, right on the cliff’s edge.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady
of Mellieha
According to ancient tradition, in the year 60 AD
the Apostle Luke painted a figure of the Madonna
on the rock face of a natural cave in Mellieħa. Ever
since it has grown into a great devotional center
and the Holy Icon is considered as the most ancient
painting of Our Lady in the Maltese Islands.
It is believed that in the 5th Century some
Augustinian monks cared for this shrine while
another tradition says that, around the year 409AD,
a group of bishops consecrated the shrine as a
church.
With the coming of Count Roger in 1091, Marian
devotion in this shrine increased so much that
along with the common people, bishops and Grand
Masters of the Order of St. John visited the Sanctuary
regularly donating ExVoto gifts to Our Lady.
In 1587, finding the Mellieħa Madonna in a very
dilapitated state, Bishop Tommaso Gargallo ordered
another painting of Our Lady, thus covering the
original icon. This work was carried out sometime
between 1610-1614. On the 6th June 1614, the
Turks landed on the shores below the Sanctuary
and attacked the shrine causing serious damage to
the lower parts of the Madonna.
However, in spite of this and constant corsair
attacks, pilgrims increased so much that between
1717 and 1719 the Sanctuary building was
enlarged, with one of the side Arches making way
for the belfry. The shrine was embellished and the
altar decorated with stone columns. The Madonna
itself was covered with a silver dress allowing only
Her face and that of Baby Jesus to be seen.
The triumphal Arch leading to the Sanctuary
complex was erected in 1719 as a monumental
Places of Interest
ExVoto following a miraculous downpour during
a national pilgrimage held to pray for rain. The
inscription on the Arch, from Psalm 21, reads “In
thee did our fathers trust: They trusted, and thou
didst deliver them”.
The Sanctuary was consecrated in 1747 by Bishop
Alpheran de Bussan when an oil painting on canvas
depicting the Blessed Virgin and the Child Jesus
holding an orb was placed in front of the icon which
was again hardly visible.
The Sanctuary was enlarged again between 1844
and 1847, thus incorporating the churchyard which
stood at the back. The Mellieħa Madonna was
solemnly crowned in 1899.
In 1973, restoration works on the icon brought
out the original effigy of the Madonna and Child,
covered over since 1610, showing a Byzantine style
icon dating to the beginning of the 11th century.
In 1960 Pope John XXIII declared the Mellieħa
Sanctuary as one ‘of the most famous in the world’
while in 1965 Pope Paul VI sent a candle to be put
at the feet of the Blessed Virgin Mary in her Marian
Sanctuary of Mellieħa.
On 26th May 1990 the Sanctuary was honoured by
His Holiness Pope John Paul II who visited the holy
icon and prayed in front of it while in 2010 Pope
Benedict XVI sent a special prayer to Our Lady.

Fortifications
The first fortification built in Mellieħa by the
Knights of Saint John was the Red Tower. It was
finished in 1649 to instil fear in the enemy and
security amongst the locals. Mellieħa suffered a
lot from corsair and pirate attacks with its people
abandoning the area for safer refuge. Two other
towers were added in 1658, namely White Tower
and Għajn Ħadit Tower near Mġiebaħ, and in 1714
more shore batteries, redoubts and sea walls were
constructed, thus regenerating confidence and the
rebirth of the Mellieħa village. Today, one of these
batteries houses a Tonnara Maritime Museum.

World War II Shelters
Being surrounded by so many low-lying and easily
accessible sandy beaches, during the second
World War several beach posts and pill boxes were
constructed against possible enemy landings or
invasions. Some are still intact and easily reached
during heritage walks. Inside Mellieħa about
46 shelters were dug into the Upper Coralline
Limestone rock for people to shelter during airraids and two of them are open to the public very
near the Sanctuary of Our Lady.

Archaeological Sites
In several places around Mellieħa, like ‘Ta Msid’ in
Aħrax, Armier, Għajn Żejtuna, and other areas we
find instances of megalithic remains while PunicRoman tombs are also still visible near San Niklaw
and Selmun.
The enigmatic cart ruts which are scattered in many
places in Malta are also present in many garigue
areas around Mellieħa. Many consist of two narrow
parallel gutters cut into the rock face. Sometimes
they intersect and those near Paradise Bay even
lead to the cliff’s edge and disappear somewhere
under the sea.
The legendary nymph Calypso also features in the
Mellieħa spectrum with a cave complex overlooking
Ġnien Ingraw Valley attributed to her as her abode
while entertaining Ulysses. Some historians
maintain that the description given by Homer
tallies exactly with this place. One of the organised
heritage trails passes very near to this place.
Annual Events
Traditional Feast of St. John
(Hgejjeg ta’ San Gwann):
In mid-June Mellieħa celebrates this traditional
feast. This event dates back to the days of the
Knights of St. John and starts with the town crier
announcement called ‘the bandu’ and reaches its
peak as the Grand Master arrives at the town square
to preside over the traditional spectacle.
The two local band clubs play marches, local girls
wear the traditional costume and there will be folk
dancing.
At the end of this event, the bonfire is lit.
Annual Events
The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin
Mary (Il-Vitorja):
The village festa is celebrated on the 8th of
September. It is essentially a religious feast but it
also includes the social aspect. The streets close to
the church will be decorated with festive decorations
and lights and the
village will be filled
with sound from band
marches and orchestral
concerts which are held
throughout the village
and also in the village
square.
Pyrotechnic
displays will illuminate
the
sky
especially
during the eve and
the actual day of the
feast. It is an important
event for the locals and
tourists alike.
Annual Events
Annual Events
Mellieha Nights (Iljieli Mellehin):
During the second week of September, the Mellieħa
Local Council, with the collaboration of various
local NGOs, holds the Iljieli Melleħin. During these
four evenings, Mellieħa will be a hub of activities there will be a celebration of art, local craft, music,
culinary experience and local produce.
Annual Events
Mellieha Christmas Markets (Milied Melliehi):
The town of Mellieħa, through its Local Council,
celebrates this feast in a big way. With the
involvement of local NGOs and other partners
it brings together the religious and the social
celebrations of this important feast for Christians.
Food, music, dancing, arts & crafts, crib making,
procession with Baby Jesus and the celebration
of mid-night mass on Christmas Eve are the main
ingredients which together make this event a
successful one.
Hamlet of Manikata
Old Traditional Farmhouse
Hamlet of Manikata
Il-Manikata is a small rural village within the
administrative area of the town of Mellieħa. It is
home to about 500 inhabitants and lies midway
between the the centre of Mellieħa and the sandy
beaches of Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay (IlMixquqa). Originally a farming hamlet with a
very small number of dwellings, many of which
consisted of caves and very small farmhouses,
it is now an urban settlement in the middle of
a very fertile and productive farming area. The
village centre is dominated by the Parish Church
of St.Joseph, built in the late 1960s by Maltese
architect Richard England. Further down the
road is the old church of St Joseph built in 1919
by the local farming community. Two farmers'
cooperatives are based at Il-Manikata. One is the
St Paul's Bay Farmers' Cooperative. Founded in
1947 it is one of the oldest farmers' cooperatives
in Malta whose membership is made up of farmers
from the North Western region of the island
of Malta. The other cooperative is Koperattiva
Rurali Manikata. Set up in 2007 it manages a
local community project in the village, mainly the
running of a Rural Heritage Trail and the selling of
local agricultural produce to visitors to the trail.
This also includes a historical farmstead known as
ir-Razzett tal-Qasam, a military beach post built
in 1935, various punic tombs, an old apiary and
a wide variety of indigenous and endemic trees.
