Achala means that which is steady and unshakeable. Himaachala represents that which is cool, peaceful and steady. In other words your True Nature, your Self, the Divine. Hima is a willingness, a commitment, in any moment, in every moment–to turn toward the Truth. Toward the deepest truth you know. For example, you might be angry with your partner or your child and feel the impulse to act/speak from anger. In that moment, Hima would be turning toward a truth which is deeper than your anger, toward the love you have for them. Giving that love your attention and letting it inform your next words. In meditation practice, Hima might be put to use when you hear your self thinking of reasons why you do not have time to practice today. In that moment, you turn your attention away from those thoughts toward the deeper truth of your practice. Hima is the act of turning; practicing Hima is the cultivation of will. Ultimately Hima is used to turn our attention away from the external world toward our inner world. Then, away from our inner world toward our True Nature. But we can also use it to turn away from the cookies and toward the carrots. But it’s also equally intriguing. I decided I wanted to take a close-up look at the “passion” story–focusing on the relationships, struggles and inner motivations of the characters…Tragically, the passion story has even been used to vilify Jews, to oppress, divide and demean. I believe the passion story is one of sacrifice, redemption, and restoration. Minnesota Artist’s Gift to His Granddaughter is Also A Gift to Fans of His Work By Rachel M. Anderson, Contributing Writer (Bemidji)–Like most artists, Marley Kaul of Bemidji, spends a lot of time in his studio. However, drawing and painting isn’t all he does there. In the letters, Kaul shares his artistic process and the influences reflected in his work. He also writes about growing up in the southern Minnesota farming community of Good Thunder, of where he gets ideas for his paintings, and of the many birds and animals that frequent his yard. “I do a lot of reading, listening to music, and thinking, and sometimes the thinking connects with the deep past and sometimes with the present,” said the former Bemidji State University (BSU) art professor. Isabella is now almost 12 years old, and many of the letters her grandfather wrote to her over the years have been turned into a lasting treasure not only for her to enjoy, but for fans of her grandfather’s work as well. About 12 years ago while dealing with a health scare, Kaul started writing letters to his unborn granddaughter, Isabella. He says around that time he began to think about his own mortality, and wanted to make sure his granddaughter would know about him and his work if he wasn’t around to share that knowledge with her. “Will to Bloom”, egg tempera 34 | Exploring Theater Mill Studio Press of Bemidji, MN, released Letters to Isabella, Paintings by Marley Kaul in Fall, 2015. The book features 77 images of Kaul’s egg tempera paintings, each paired with a letter he wrote to Isabella. However, our region–defined by progress–is stymied by growing inequalities, and too many people are left out of the success story. If unchecked, this divide threatens the viability of our community. Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity believes affordable homeownership is one solution that gets right at root causes of inequality. Twin Cities neighborhoods with good schools, parks, jobs, and infrastructure share the common trait of high homeownership rates. You can support the mission of Twin Cities Habitat, and enjoy a wonderful night out, at the annual Hard Hat & Black Tie Gala on Saturday, April 9 at the St. Paul RiverCentre. Guests are encouraged to wear construction couture to this party that is a little less formal and a lot more fun. Get your tickets or a table at www.tchabitat.org/gala. Ya Landa bought a Habitat home that she helped rehab on St. Paul’s East Side in 2010. After moving in, her asthma cleared up because she was no longer living in a moldy apartment. Today her oldest son, Taylor, is a student at the Carlson School of Management and her younger son, Dale, will start college this fall. She’s so proud of both of them. Stories like Ya Landa’s are why people keep coming back to Habitat as volunteers and financial donors. They see the impact of their gifts and the impact of affordable homeownership. Artist Steve Goad with his work. In short, he paints what he likes and chooses colors that move him. His subject matter is also wide ranging, consisting of concept, whimsical, wildlife, fantasy and science fiction. He works with acrylic, charcoal, oils, digital and follows a simple rule: He makes traditional paintings look like digital photos and his digital work like traditional paintings. He often receives comments from his fans about how they like his work because he doesn’t stick to just one medium or one subject matter. From dancers to whimsical characters to fantasy environments and wildlife, they never know what kind of art he’ll be creating next. He believes art is more than just a piece of paper or canvas; it is an extension of the artist himself. Steve believes art comes from within, it doesn’t matter if you’re using a pencil, paintbrush, airbrush or a digital pen. It’s the end result that matters most. Exploring Art | 53 American Artists The American Artist Series T his issue continues another American Artists Series, now in its fifth year. Each year, we search for art all over the United States, looking for that special, unique “something” that only talented, dedicated and inspired artists can provide. As always, our goal is to bring our readers artists who excel in their work and art that we believe our readers will truly appreciate. We look for art that is visually beautiful, emotionally or spiritually provocative and/or intellectually challenging. Because we always have the reader in mind we also consider the accessibility of the artists and the art. Therefore, we also look for art that we believe the viewer will want to hang in their home or their place of business, art that can be seen on a website and artists that can be reached. I have learned, after doing this for four years now, that we are a country filled with talented artists and remarkable art. Each artist has their own story and while their artistic ability is impressive, they are not simply defined by their art. I encourage you to visit their websites, enjoy their art and read their bios and statements. Some of them have stories as fascinating as their art. And by all means, treat yourself to a great piece of art! Gail M. Weber Burton Hanna Alaska Artist of the Year 907.727.4597 [email protected] www.burtsart.com Burton Hanna has been creating art for as long as he can remember. He was born in 1954 near the Black Hills in South Dakota. His parents moved to Alaska when he was 10 years old and he has lived most of his life in Alaska. He finds inspiration in the wild beauty of his surroundings. He worked mainly with charcoal and graphite. In 2002, he began oil painting and he realized that oils were the medium that would best express his artistic vision. One of his greatest inspirations is Native American dance. His heritage is Norwegian and Lakota and he has loved attending powwows since his childhood. In his paintings, he works to capture the excitement, brilliance and action of the powwow dancers. “Fancy Dancer I”, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 inches 54 | Exploring Art www.tctosca.com American Artists Vicki P. This, in addition to the influence of many travels, gave her a deep appreciation for the beauty of the vast land and its color variations– especially the oceans. This love affair has gone from Impressionistic work to Contemporary Expressionism allowing experiences in life to permeate her work in the studio. Vicki utilizes oil, wax, scrapers and large brushes to gain luminosity in her work. A B.A. in Advertising/Design, minor in Photography, her paintings are collected nationwide and are hanging as far away as Granada, Nicaragua. “Folly Pier”, oil and cold wax palette knife painted on linen, 16 x 16 x 1.5 inches Joyce Gabiou Florida Artist of the Year 904.612.4247 [email protected] www.joycegabiou.com Award-winning artist, Joyce Gabiou, began her art career in the Twin Cities and remembers its great teachers and cultural scene. Informed memory, limited palette, and workshops with renowned artists are some of her inspiration. Current work on canvas involves the use of collage, acrylics, and texture. In Jacksonville, Florida she teaches collage and mixed media painting. With so much talk recently of Donald Trump treating his run for the presidency as a work of performance art, I got to thinking more about the nature of art and life. We wouldn’t necessarily get it “right” every time, but our attention would be in an incredibly useful place, and we would learn very quickly how different people responded to different things that we do, and we could get better and better at realizing our visions. by Pete Machalek, partner of SagePresence I got into film because I loved the impact that it had on me. At the same time, I enjoyed the experience of creating something new and original. Plus, I really liked the idea of impacting other people and inspiring their reactions. It’s easy to think of art as being the thing that is created: The film, the play, the dance, the sculpture, the painting. But are any of those things truly art if they don’t have an audience? What if the work of art isn’t the piece, but the audience reaction to the piece? Then maybe every one of us could be an artist. All we would need to do is focus on the people around us, www.tctosca.com Everything that we do and say would be artistic expressions of our intentions, and we would be living in a work of art of our own creation. For more help in creating and telling your story, check out Pete Machelek’s blog at http://www.sagepresence.com. For more information on SagePresence, email [email protected] or call (612) 384-0763. Suor Angelica is the story of Sister Angelica who has been living in a convent for seven years for unknown reasons that are revealed when a visitor arrives to tell the nun that her ‘illegitimate” son has died. Devastated, she takes poison and asks the Virgin Mary for forgiveness. Gianni Schicchi, featuring one of Puccini’s best-loved arias, O mio babbino caro, is a farce about a greedy family that learns that their recently-deceased patriarch has left his fortune to a monastery. 76 | Arts on the Road Riverfront Fine Arts Festival Classes in all art mediums Check out our website for a full calendar of events all year long!
