Stephen Foster State Park
Nestled in the towering pines and oaks
of White Springs, Stephen Foster Folk
Culture Center State Park is a tribute to the
memory and accomplishments of famed
musician Stephen Foster, as well as a
unique look at “natural Florida.”
This 888 acre state park commemorates
the life of the legendary composer, who
is best known for his work “Old Folks at
Home,” which is Florida’s state song. To
date, Foster’s songs can still be heard
reverberating through the park’s 97-bell
carillon tower, immortalizing his words
and music in the wooded, natural scenery
of the park.
Foster is credited as one of the fathers
of tourism in Florida, as his songs tweaked
the interests of wealthy northerners who
wanted to visit the then-White Sulphur
Springs in Florida for its so-called therapeutic benefit, as well as see the famed
Suwannee River Foster penned in his song,
“Old Folks at Home” (Way Down Upon
the Suwannee River). Passenger trains
began visit-
ing the White Springs area in the early
1900s.
Foster himself never visited Florida and
he chose the name Suwannee River from
a map and because the lyric fit the song’s
cadence.
The Stephen Foster Museum honors the
composer’s importance in the development of Florida. The grand structure is
located near the middle of the park, and is
home to numerous paintings and dioramas
depicting scenes from Foster’s life and his
lyrics, brought to life before visitor’s eyes.
Foster is the only composer in history to
pen two state songs: Florida’s “Old Folks
at Home” and “My Old Kentucky Home.”
The park is located on the Suwannee
River in White Springs, 12 miles north of
Lake City, and offers various nature trails
for visitors wishing to hike or just take
in the natural world around them. Craft
Square is also very popular among visitors, allowing a more hands-on approach
to the festivities. Demonstrations at Craft
Square include blacksmithing, stainedglass making, quilting and aromatherapy.
The park offers a full-service campground,
plus primitive camping and several cabins
along the riverbank.
While the park is home to numerous activities throughout the year, the
main event annually is the Florida Folk
Festival. Taking place on Memorial Day
weekend, the festival draws thousands
of visitors from around the state. Vendors
set up shop during the festival and sell
handcrafted trinkets and goods. Dozens
of folk bands will also perform an entire
weekend of live music during the festifesti
val, keeping the spirit of the park alive
through the heart of music and lyrical
splendor.

Ichetucknee River
The Ichetucknee River provides a cool
breath of nature’s air conditioning and
crisp refreshment to all who take a dip in
the cool spring water.
At 72 degrees year-round, the crystal
clear waters of the spring-fed river provide recreation to hundreds of thousands
of visitors each year. Winding through
quiet, wooded, undeveloped sections of
southern Columbia County, the river provides quiet relaxation for those in canoes
and kayaks and a splashing good time
for tubers and swimmers. The current is a
very inviting 1 mph.
The river is the center point of
Columbia County tourism and one of the
region’s top draws for those visiting the
Suwannee River Valley region.
The Ichetucknee is a spring-fed tributary of the Santa Fe River, nine springs
of which have been named, with
Suwannee River Valley
several other smaller springs feeding
the tiny, but lively river. Blue Hole is
the largest spring in the Ichetucknee
Springs State Park, with clear, cool
waters and cave diving available for the
experienced, permitted scuba diver from
October through March.
Ichetucknee Spring is the river’s head
spring and the center of a state park. The
head spring offers a large pool suitable
for snorkeling or swimming before spilling over to form the headwaters of the
river. Clear-water visibility in the springs
and river is an amazing 30 feet or more
on most days.
The seven other named springs that
feed the Ichetucknee are Cedar Head
Spring, Roaring Spring, Singing Spring,
Boiling Spring, Grassy Hole Spring, Mill
Pond Spring and Coffee Spring. All of
these springs constantly lend waters to
the river that never exceeds 20 feet wide
and has an average depth of eight feet.
The river also is very popular with
swimmers during the winter months, as
the water often is warmer than the air
temperature and very inviting.
Ichetucknee Springs State Park
No visit to the Suwannee River Valley
is fully complete without visiting the fresh,
crystal waters of the Ichetucknee Springs
State Park.
The park is a can’t-miss attraction in
the region, providing the largest tourist
and visitor presence in Columbia County
and surrounding areas. With nine major
springs feeding a six-mile stretch of river
within the state park boundary, the park
offers cool freshwater recreation yearround.
The spring water is crystal clear with
an inviting constant temperature of 72
degrees and is very inviting to summer
visitors on a scorching hot day. It also has
appeal to swimmers in the winter because
the water is warmer than the air temperature on some winter mornings.
The headspring, located at the north
entrance, offers a great swimming and
snorkeling attraction with visibility of 30
feet or more in most locations, then spills
over into the meandering river. The river
serves as a put-in point for tubers during
the months between Memorial Day and
Labor Day. The lower portion of the river
in the park is open to tubing year-round.
For those eco-tourists seeking quiet solitude, canoes and kayaks are
welcome on the river yearround and several nearby
outfitters outside the park
rent, deliver and pick up
canoes along the river.
Hiking and nature
watching trails are available in varying lengths,
taking guests through
virgin timber, and natural hammocks that provide vantage points for
a plethora of wildlife,
including whitetailed
deer, small upland animals, reptiles, wading
birds and waterfowl.
Picnic areas are also located throughout
the park, with tables and grills ready to
be used by day-trip picnickers. The largest
picnic area is located at the south entrance
of the park, at the lower end of the river
near the large parking area.
The staff at Ichetucknee Springs State
Park have dedicated themselves to preserving the wildlife, and natural growth
on the river path to the full of their extent.
They have fenced off natural habitats for
specific animals, while asking visitors to
have minimal impact on the sandy river
bed to do as little damage as possible to
the aquatic plants.
Guests are welcome to visit the park
year-round from 8 a.m. until sundown. The
park itself also offers a full concession area
that operates during tubing season from
Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The Ichetucknee Springs State Park
main office is located at 12087 SW U.S.
Highway 27, in Fort White, at the south
entrance to the park. The north entrance is
off Elim Church Road, just off State Road
47, north of Fort White. Admission fees to
the park vary dependent on season and
number of visitors. For admission information or any questions about the park, call
386-497-4690.

Public Springs of
Suwannee County
Within Suwannee County, there are
several springs that add to the rich
heritage of the river community. These
springs are maintained by the county,
and offer activities for visitors seeking
to escape into nature, with bubbling
waters, and a sunny sky.
Three of these public springs specifically attract tourists, and residents of
the community, due to the beauty they
offer, and the adventure found in their
waters.
Little River Springs is located on
County Road 242 in Branford, and is
anything but little. The spring stretches
approximately 150 feet long, with a
cave system that is more than 1,200 feet
long underwater. Little River is found on
a 125 acre plot of land, operated by the
Suwannee River Water Management
District which renovated the park with
concrete walkways and steps leading
down to the springs. Nature walks are
popular at Little River, and a wide variety of wildlife scour the area, including
deer, squirrel and numerous birds.
Offering activities like picnicking, hiking, swimming, and nature walks, Royal
Springs is also a large part of Suwannee
County’s heritage. The spring is located
at Suwannee Belle Estates on 157th
Lane in Live Oak, and is approximately
six miles southeast of Luraville. This
wooded park has a stairway leading
down to the spring, as well as boat ramp
access for visitors wishing to take a cruise
on the water.
The smaller of the three, yet seemingly
just as famous, is found out by the wooded
farmlands of Live Oak. Charles Springs is
located at 237th Drive and 152nd Street in
Live Oak, and is an 11 acre historic site on
the Suwannee River. With tree swings, dive
spots, and several caves to swim through,
the fun is just getting started at Charles
Springs. There are also miles of land
cleared and walkways made for nature
walks, or hiking, dependent on which route
is taken. There is also a paved boat ramp,
as well as grills and picnic tables for those
looking to spend the day.
All parks are open to the public from
7 a.m. - 7 p.m., April through October;
and 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., November through
March.

Suwannee
River
The Suwannee River is the cradle of
civilization of North Florida and remains
as pristine today as it did thousands
of years ago when ancient American
Indian tribes thrived along its banks.
The river is the drainage basin for
all other rivers in the region, eventually transporting all the spring-fed
waters of the Alapaha, Ichetucknee,
Withlacoochee and Santa Fe Rivers
southwest to the Gulf of Mexico.
The river twists, changes direction
and flows north for a short distance,
and offers one of the most diverse ecosystems in North America. The river runs
for 266 miles, begins at its headwaters
in the Okefenokee Swamp in South
Georgia, and ends with a brackish taste
in its mouth at the Gulf at the town of
Suwannee.
Along the way, the river flows nearly
entirely through remote and unpopulated regions of North Florida. Only the
small towns of White Springs, Dowling
Park and Branford sit directly on its
banks. While the water is tannic, meaning it is a tea colored because of the millions of decaying leaves that fall into it
and release their brown tannic acid, the
water is nearly pollution free and among
the cleanest rivers on the East Coast.
The Suwannee River flows through
12
Suwannee River Valley
wild, uninhabited areas and has no
man-made structures to impede its
flow, so flooding in the remote areas is
a reality when rain persists upstream.
Campers and canoers should realize that a two-inch rain upstream
can translate into a quick river rise
and fall as that water moves downstream.
The landscape changes along the
course of the river. Wild swamplands
quickly become high limestone bluffs.
Upstream from White Springs is the
Big Shoals and Little Shoals state recreation areas that are tied to the Stephen
Foster Folk Culture Center State Park.
Big Shoals is a white-water rapids area
and the river boasts Florida’s only Class
3 rapids.
The Suwannee River commands a
special importance to Florida’s heritage.
It is home to thousands of species of
wildlife that call the remote areas home.
It also is the main artery of outdoor
recreation in North Florida. While the
northern flows of the river are small and
suitable only for canoes and kayaks, in
Suwannee County the river widens and
is suitable for motorized fishing and ski
boats, pontoons and even house boats.
The magnificence of the Suwannee
River has captured the hearts of tourists
and natives alike, and is forever captured in the official state song of Florida,
Old Folks at Home (“Way Down Upon
the Suwannee River”). This song was
written by Stephen Foster.
Several recreation areas are associated with the Suwannee River, including
the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail,
encompassing 170 miles of the waters.
The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife
Refuge offers bird and wildlife observation.
Santa Fe River
The Santa Fe River is the perfect midsize
river offering inviting fun for both paddlers
and motor boat enthusiasts. Nature watching, fishing, swimming, diving and camping
along its banks are great escapes for those
wanting to leave civilization behind.
With a slow, gentle current, lazing along
the river is an option anywhere. The pace
makes the river easy for beginners to
navigate and get a feel for the sport of
paddling.
Passing beneath hardwood hammocks
and river swamps, the Santa Fe River
is untouched in it’s natural beauty. This
preservation of nature, has made wildlife
observation abundant in the areas the river
passes through. These creatures can be
seen along the riverbanks, and on canoe
trails, or even in the state parks that the
Santa Fe passes through.
Many springs are also located along
the Santa Fe River, making it a picturesque
adventure for those who choose to navigate it.
Spanning a total of seven counties and
winding for 79 miles, the river makes it’s
mark on North Florida. It eventually flows
into the Suwannee River, which makes its
way to the Gulf of Mexico.
Along its path, the Santa Fe possesses
an unnatural characteristic by diving underground on it’s trek through the region.
Once it reaches O’Leno State Park, the
river falls into a sinkhole and
runs underunder
ground. It

completed in the area by the Civilian
Conservation Corps during the Great
Depression years of the 1930s.
CCC workers built the park and the
pedestrian suspension bridge still used to
cross the Santa Fe River. In the park is a
solid memorial to the men who cleared
the site. Markers explain the CCC’s role
during the era.
The park has cabins and campsites, as
well as pavilions and areas suitable for
reunions or casual meeting retreats.
Old and new are paired together in
O’Leno State Park, when remnants of
an old mill and historical markers, meet
the canoe and bicycle trails of the park.
The Santa Fe River meanders slowly past
the O’Leno facilities and just south of the
park plunges into a sinkhole and runs
underground. The river re-emerges three
miles south at River Rise State Park.
Acres of shaded areas provide quiet
spaces for visitors looking for a peaceful
stroll, a picnic or a natural experience on
a shaded walking trail.
A one-mile section of the Bellamy
Road, Florida’s first federally funded
wagon road, still exists in the park. The
Bellamy Road was constructed in 1824,
and is a famous landmark that holds
special significance to the area’s early
settlement.

Suwannee River
State Park
Home to landmarks from the Civil War
era, the ancient remains of the Columbus
Cemetery, and several other keepsakes and
attractions from the past, the Suwannee
River State Park offers both recreation and
a look back at history.
This history, accompanied by the centuries-old Suwannee River, with crisp, cool
waters and natural oaks and pines at its
borders, remains an unparalleled area of
beauty.
Suwannee River State Park offers visitors
five different trails to hike, ranging from a
quarter mile, to 18 miles long. These trails
run through gorgeous, massive woods and
provide breathtaking views of both the
Suwannee and Withlacoochee rivers.
Deer, wild turkeys, hawks and an endless
amount of scurrying, magnificent wildlife
offers visitors the opportunity to see nature
untouched while camping at the park.
Recreation on the river also proves to be
fulfilling. With fishing, kayaking, canoeing,
boating, or even just a refreshing swim in
the light current, guests are sure to enjoy fun
in the sun during their visit.
The park is located at 3631 201st Path in
Live Oak, and offers everything necessary
to those wishing to take in the views that are
“Way down upon the Suwannee River.”

Cycling Trails
Cycling on remote paved country
roads or off-road on maintained mountain bike trails continues to grow in popularity in the Suwannee Valley region.
Road cycling sees an audience with
many touring groups visiting the scenic
highways and country landscapes of the
region. Many paved secondary roads
have slower traffic patterns that allow
cyclists to glide past fields of wildflowers,
open pastures dotted with majestic live
oak trees and cattle ranches — all within
the scope of an hour’s ride.
White Springs in Hamilton County
has become the epicenter of cycling and
off-road mountain biking in the region.
The Suwannee Bicycle Association (www.
suwanneebike.org) maintains a hostelstyle clubhouse in White Springs and
sponsors numerous events throughout the
year for both cycling and mountain
biking.
Within the White Springs area,
there are several trails on public
16
Suwannee River Valley
wildlife management areas that offer
interesting off road challenges for mountain bike enthusiasts. The Bridge-to-Bridge
trail along the Suwannee River offers a
6-mile unique lowland swamp riding to
small hills, ravines and dry creek beds
in places.
In the Big Shoals recreation area, a
3.5 mile Woodpecker Trail is paved for
cyclists and runs through the wilderness
area. Also within Big Shoals are numerous forest access roads that double as
perfect double-track mountain bike trails,
many of which offer unique vistas of the
nearby Suwannee River.
For road cyclists, groups converge on
White Springs frequently and organized
rides ranging in distance of 25 miles to
a full century (100 mile) ride occur on
many weekends during the year.
Suwannee River
Wilderness Trail
Winding 170 miles from White Springs to the
Gulf of Mexico, the Suwannee River Wilderness
Trail offers recreation, adventure, and natural
beauty for all who travel it. The trail was initiated to
attract people to both hiking along the banks of the
river and enjoying paddling sports on the river.
The narrow upper portion of the trail begins
in White Springs in Hamilton County. From there,
in Suwannee County the trail stretches from the
Suwannee River State Park to the town of Branford
in the middle section of the trail.
This section offers swimming and cave diving in
the famous natural springs of North Florida, as a
relaxing break from the adventure on the trail.
While on the wilderness trail, eight different
towns and parks host special events, shopping
locations, lodging and dining establishments for
visitors. Lodging is especially abundant on the
trail, with choices ranging from log cabins to campgrounds, and several bed and breakfast inns.
River camps line the river at one-day intervals,
and are accessible only from the river itself, making navigation along the Suwannee easy, and
comfortable. Each of the five camps have raised,
screened sleeping platforms. These campsites have
electricity, ceiling fans, restrooms, hot water showers and primitive camping sites for tents. Platforms
can accommodate up to six river travelers.
For an unforgettable adventure with beauty
and nature, the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail
leaves its visitors with splendid memories and
opportunities to hike, kayak, bike, snorkel or scuba
dive, canoe, camp, fish, swim or boat down, and
alongside the majestic river.

Alligator Lake
Public Recreation Area
For outdoor enthusiasts looking
for everything from the best playground and covered pavilions area
in Lake City to a leisurely stroll on a
secluded trail in the woods, Alligator
Lake Recreation Area in Lake City
offers it.
The park provides the easy-going,
open-space setting of a shaded picnic
area, or trails that are challenging
enough for hikers of medium skill and
distance endurance levels to get a
great nature workout. Like to mountain bike? Alligator Lake offers the
only off-road trails in a park setting
in Lake City.
The park’s hiking trails are wellmarked and wind through tree lined
paths on raised dikes, some of which
extend on a loop through the marshy
fringes of the lake. From these raised
dikes, if water conditions are right,
it is possible to see alligators
in their natural habitat. Visitors
are urged to use extreme caution because there are no fences.
Alligators have free run of the
trails. Deer are frequently seen in
the park and especially on the trails
during the early morning and late
evening hours. Bird watching also is
very popular on the Alligator Lake
trails and the park is mentioned as
part of the Great Florida Birding
Trail. Wading and wetland birds
call the area home year-round and
migratory birds can be seen during rest stops during the winter
and early spring months.
18
Suwannee River Valley
There are more than 12 miles of
hiking trails, which also can be used
for biking. Cyclists should ride a cruiser, hybrid or mountain bike on the
dirt and grass trails, most of which
are double track width and flat.
Playground equipment is handicapped accessible and that area
offers three covered picnic pavilions
and sand volleyball courts. A fishing
and canoe launch is also available
and the lake has a healthy population
of largemouth bass, bluegill and other
common freshwater species. For those
interested in hosting special events,
the park also is home to the Ponderosa
Pond, a small stocked pond perfect for
children’s fishing derby events. The
park also offers a recently renovated
pole barn, large enough for most
reunions and other occasions.
The park’s 1,000 acres of green
space and wetlands were purchased
by Columbia County officials in 1997.
More than 20,000 people visit the
park annually through the main gate
entrance off Country Club Road in
Lake City. These numbers do not
including bicyclists, hikers and boaters, who also have access to the
park from several entrance points. The
diversity of the park makes it a popular destination for families and people
of varied interests.

Florida Birding Trail
Bird watching is some of the best in North
America anywhere in the Suwannee River
Valley.
The numerous wilderness areas, the
Osceola National Forest and the abundance
of undisturbed fresh water make the perfect
habitat for thousands of species of birds.
There are dozens of official sites that
are part of the Great Florida Birding Trail,
but birds can be observed in dozens of city
parks and recreation areas in Columbia,
Hamilton and Suwannee counties.
Any of the region’s state parks and recreation areas, as well as many of the county
recreation areas in the Suwannee Valley
Region offer remote locations and enough
untouched habitat to attract everything from
doves and sparrows to woodpeckers and
birds of prey.
Anywhere there is water or marshland
also attracts a variety of wading birds and
waterfowl.
The Suwannee River Valley also is a
rest stop on the Atlantic
flyway for numerous
migrating birds from
mourning doves to ducks
and geese and several
species of cranes, just to
name a few.
If birds don’t provide
enough excitement to
watch, maybe bats are
more intriguing. Those
fascinated with flight
might want to observe
the world’s largest bat
house located at the
Spirit of the Suwannee
Music Park outside
Live Oak. Hundreds of
thousands of bats live in the house which is
studied frequently by scientists and tourists
alike.

Suwannee River Valley
Falling Creek Falls Park offers Columbia
County’s only waterfall and some of the most
interesting rock outcroppings in the region. A
limestone shelf is exposed above a collapsed
creek bed that allows the creek to tumble
conover the boulders during normal water con
ditions.
Described
by locals as
a
natural
wonder of
Columbia
County, the
creek spills
over a 12
foot drop,
into the tannic waters
below.
Falling
C r e e k
meanders
through
sinkthe forest and eventually drains into a sink
hole half a mile below the falls.
The park is county maintained and offers
a picnic area and public restroom facilities
nestled beneath massive Live Oak trees that
shade the park.
Falling Creek Falls park provides special
event or party planning locations under
the three picnic pavilions and a boardwalk
through nature that leads along the creek
and down to the falls viewing area.
Falling Creek Falls is located on County
Road 131, north of the U.S. Highway 41 and
I-10 interchange. It is open year-round from
8 a.m. to sundown. Admission is free.
