HEAVY CRUISERS
Constitution-class starships were first introduced in 2240, although few
were initially built. The primary differences between the Chesapeake and
the Constitution are the warp engines and the engineering hull. These
vessels have served Starfleet in maintaining the Federation’s borders
during times of peace and war. They are also capable of extensive survey,
scientific, exploratory and research missions to outlying areas of Federation
territory. Many ships of this class were destroyed in the Kelvan War of
2285. Subsequent variations of this class (the Bonhomme Richard, the
Achernar and the Tikopai) are still considered by most as Constitutionclass vessels.

NOTES ON THE
CONSTITUTION CLASS
There has been some confusion among starship enthusiasts
regarding the numbering of Starfleet vessels. Many Constitutionclass vessels were often ascribed as having different numbers
based on a chart seen in Commodore Stone’s office at Starbase
11. However, those were not the construction contract numbers
(a.k.a. hull numbers) of the heavy cruisers, but were rather workorders for each of the vessels in orbit. Complicating matters is
Starfleet’s long-standing policy not to be specific about its actual
fleet numbers.
Furthermore, rarely were all twelve original Constitution-class
vessels were in service at the same time. The U.S.S. Hood was
decommissioned for a year (2258-2259) while it was extensively
repaired. The same holds true for the starships Exeter (2268)
and Excalibur (same year).
Ship’s Dimensions:
Length: 321.4m
Width: 147.5m
Height: 76.5m
Ship’s Complement:
Despite this, this class of vessel is probably held in the highest
regard. The Bonhomme Richard, Achernar and Tikopai classes
are simply variants based on this design. The Constitution-class
is presently being phased out in favor of the Excelsior-class.

CONSTITUTION-CLASS HEAVY CRUISERS
The Constitution-class heavy cruisers were commissioned by the United Federation of Planets to
maintain order and explore the uncharted regions of our galaxy. Assembled in space, each ship is
capable of extended starflight for up to five years without refurbishment.
To carry out its mission of exploration, each heavy cruiser is equipped with elaborate sensing and
recording equipment, complete laboratories, and small, manned shuttlecraft for short-range missions.
The highly trained multi-racial crew includes Academy-trained officers, scientists, and ship engineering
specialists. Of the 430 crew members, approximately one-third are female. A maze-like ship
interior contains adequate space for the crew to live and enjoy limited recreation.
Sub-light speed propulsion is supplied by the impulse engines located in the rear of the saucershaped hull section. Impulse power is supplemented by a powerful thruster maneuvering system.
Starflight capability is provided by the two matter/anti-matter propulsion units which allow the ship
to ‘warp’ normal space and exceed the speed of light. Navigational deflector beams sweep out far
ahead of the vessel’s path to deflect space debris and other objects which could cause damage at
hyper-light speeds.
Often the Federation’s only representative in distant regions of space, each heavy cruiser must
function as a police cruiser and warship. When threatened, the giant ship can become a formidable
warship with its powerful phaser banks, photon torpedoes, and energy shields.

Bonhomme Richard-class
Bonhomme Richard-class starships starships (a variant of the Constitution
class) were first introduced in 2256. The primary differences between the
Bonhomme Richard and the Constitution are the internal arrangements of
the engineering hull. Those differences resulted in a slightly different warp
engine configuration when the ships of this class were uprated in 2275.
These vessels have served Starfleet in maintaining the Federation’s borders
during times of peace and war. They are also capable of extensive survey,
scientific, exploratory and research missions to outlying areas of Federation
territory. Several ships of this class have been permanently stationed in
star systems such as those of Serenidad and Coridan in order to protect
and preserve Federation interests. Many ships of this class were destroyed
in the Kelvan War of 2285.

HEAVY CRUISERS
Tikopai-class starships (a variant of the Constitution class) were first introduced in
2268. The primary difference between the Tikopai and the Constitution is the relocation of the hangar deck to the rear of the upper primary hull, and the addition of

Starfleet in maintaining the Federation’s borders during times of peace and war.
They are also capable of extensive survey, scientific, exploratory and research
missions to outlying areas of Federation territory. Many ships of this class were

Soyuz-class starships were first introduced in 2271 to supplement
the number of fighting ships of the Forrestal- and Ranger-class,
but had a more extended crew weapons bay than the Voskhod.
This vessel has served Starfleet in maintaining the Federation’s
borders from pirates, renegades and even invasion fleets, but they
also can be used as a buffer between Federation members on
the verge of war. The Federation began decommissioning the
Soyuz-class following the Kelvan War as most proved worthless in
campaigns against their forces. By 2288, all had been removed
from active duty service.

DREADNOUGHTS
Federation-class starships were first introduced in 2248 in
response to the Battle for Donatu V. These dreadnoughts
were never as fast as intended, but were certainly quite
powerful. Prior to the Kelvan War, only one of them was
lost (presumed destroyed) during the Klingon incursions
into Federation space in the mid-2270s. The dreadnoughts
were uprated in 2277 and were the pride of Starfleet until
all but one of them was destroyed during the Kelvan War.
The lone survivor, the Alliance, was itself destroyed during
an accidental incursion into Romulan space in 2295.

Starfleet is considering an Excelsior-based design for
replacing these starships.

CARRIERS
Napolean-class starships were first introduced in 2249.
This vessel has served Starfleet in transporting fighters
and shuttlecraft throughout the Federation as needed either
for purposes of war or exploration. The original intent of
Starfleet was not to introduce fighters into interstellar
warfare, however encounters with Orion pirates, Kzinti
privateers and Tholian police cruisers convinced them that
a small fighter force was necessary for the security of the
Federation.

Dakota-class starships were first introduced in 2279 as
the Napolean-class became more and more obsolete.
The Dakotas were designed to transport larger fighters
and shuttles at an even faster velocity.
