Gorry Gallery CHRISTMAS GROUP SHOW JUNE BRILLY GERARD BYRNE CARL JONES PAUL KELLY NOEL MURPHY NORMAN TEELING SUZANNE VAN VLIET GORRY GALLERY Christmas Group Exhibition 33. 7th December — 15th December, 2000 JUNE BRILLY June Brilly was born in 1956 in Illinois, United States of America and settled in Ireland in 1975 living in Prosperous, County Kildare. She has been working fulltime as a professional artist since 1982 and has a firmly established reputation among the Irish racing and hunting fraternity. She specialises in painting animals, particularly horses, and has been commissioned to paint many racehourses, International showjumpers, and eventers, but prefers to paint behind the scene studies rather than traditional portraits indeed the whole spectrum of country life. She has had numerous successful exhibitions in Ireland and abroad and her most recent commission was four large works for the Four Seasons Hotel, Dublin. 2. OPENING UP THE FIELD GERARD BYRNE Born in Dublin in 1958, Gerard Byrne took an early interest in drawing and painting, without any formal training, he never attended art college. Gerard developed a style of painting all his own, tackling virtually any subject with tenacity, producing pictures of vitality with daring perspective, colour and individuality. He paints outdoors on a surprisingly large scale, and in bad weather concentrates in his studio on still life and figurative subjects. He has had solo exhibitions in Dublin, Berlin and New York from 1989 to the present and works by him are in numerous public and private collections in Ireland and abroad. He had a successful one man show here earlier this year and was included in the 20 Hot up and coming Irish Artists to watch out for in ‘A Buyers Guide to Irish Art’, (Ashville Media Group). 61. LILLIES BY A WINDOW CARL JONES Carl Jones was born in Dublin in 1958. A graduate of Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design he initially worked as a graphic designer. Then switching to the field of animation he has risen to a senior artistic position at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. His work there has led to his nomination for an Animation Academy Award or Annie Award for Art Direction/ Production Design this year. Carl has exhibited in several galleries throughout Ireland and America. Exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy each year from 1989 to 1994 he received the Niccolo d’Ardia Caracciolo Award in 1994. He was one of the featured artists at last years Christmas Group Exhibition here in the Gorry Gallery. Works of his are in public collections in Ireland, most recently two paintings in the collection of Fingal County Library. Carl continues to paint and exhibit both at home and abroad and has recently returned from a painting trip to Italy. 48. SORTING THE CATCH, BALBRIGGAN HARBOUR PAUL KELLY Paul Kelly was born in Dublin in 1968 and established a wide reputation as an exciting painter early in his career. His three solo exhibitions in this Gallery in 1992, 1993 and 1999 were unprecedented for their success and critical acclaim. He has exhibited frequently at the Royal Hibernian Academy and obtained the James Kennedy Memorial Award in 1991. Works by him are in Public Collections in Ireland and abroad including the National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland, University of Limerick, Fingal County Library and the Brian P. Burns Collection, United States of America. He is included in Who’s Who in Ireland: ‘The Influential 1,000’ (editor Maureen Cairnduff), and in A Buyers Guide to Irish Art 20 Hot up and coming Irish Artists to watch out for (Ashville Media Group). He received the Ireland Fund of Great Britain – Artist of the Year Award 1999 and his painting ‘The Liffey Rowers’ was exhibited this year at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, Washington (Millennium Celebration of Island: Arts from Ireland). 9. TULIP FIELDS, RUSH NOEL MURPHY Noel Murphy was born in London in 1970. In 1994 he graduated from the University of Ulster (at Belfast) with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. Noel lives with Annette and Holly in the North of Ireland. Collections: Ulster Museum AIB The National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland UTV The Burns Library, Boston College Arts Council of Northern Ireland 13. ‘THE MOON’ NORMAN TEELING Norman Teeling was born in Dublin and is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design. He taught Art in many colleges in Dublin for over 12 years. He became a background artist in the Animation industry with Don Bluth Studios, where he worked on several feature films. As an artist Norman has held solo and group exhibitions in many Dublin galleries, and was commissioned in 1998 to paint works for permanent display in the General Post Office that depict the events surrounding ‘The 1916 Rising’. He lives and works in Clontarf, Dublin. 3. STREET MUSICIANS, GRAFTON STREET SUZANNE VAN VLIET Suzanne Van Vliet – Van Blom studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague. She taught art at highschools in the Netherlands and at the International School in Jakarta where she lived for 5 years with her family. In 1997 she came to Ireland. Here she is inspired by the Irish landscape with the countless ruins and stones from early Christian, Celtic and pre-historic times. There is a hidden mythology; people and landscape in a mystic inter-action. She paints according to the old Dutch oil painting techniques and has exhibited in Amsterdam, the Hague, Gouda, Jakarta and recently in Dublin. 38.
