Understand how this major engineering project created 13km of waterfront and turned Cardiff Bay
into an international waterside destination. Explore the history, regeneration and future development

BayArt
Situated 2 minutes away from Wales Millennium Centre,
BayArt has been open to the public since 2003 and runs short
drawing workshops in their large, light gallery.
The venue offers pupils of all ages the opportunity to discover and enjoy contemporary visual art.
The gallery is also keen to promote the importance and primacy of drawing within the visual arts.

The Education and Community Outreach Department of
BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales extends the

Butetown History and Arts Centre
Education remains at the core of Butetown History and
Arts Centre. In their new and improved public spaces on the
ground and first floors of the centre, they offer an extensive
programme of community education for learners of all

Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre
The Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre provides an informative
cinema and exhibition room with a DVD that details the
history and development of Cardiff Bay. This 12 minute DVD
is available to view every day; it’s entirely free of charge and
available in both Welsh and English.

Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre is based at two locations,
Channel View Leisure Centre in Grangetown and the Sailing
Centre on the Cardiff Bay Barrage.

Challenge Wales
Develop personal and social skills, improve your selfconfidence and learn about team building, communication
and respect for others through sail training on Challenge
Wales, a 72-foot round-the-world yacht based in Cardiff Bay.
Youth sail training activities are available for those aged 12 – 25 years. No sailing experience is
necessary and the group will get involved in all aspects of sailing the boat.

Doctor Who Experience
The perfect venue for school trips: inspire learning like never
before with the Doctor Who Experience.
This interactive journey takes you and your pupils on an adventure through time and space.
Step through a crack in time and help the Doctor, armed with his Sonic Screwdriver to escape from
his foes. Fly the TARDIS and come face-to-face with some of the scariest monsters seen on screen.
Following the multi-sensory experience, pupils can immerse themselves in the props used in the
television series within the exhibition area, including a behind-the-scenes wardrobe and make-up
area.
With educational tool kits supporting Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, an on-site classroom and an
indoor area to eat packed lunches, discover the technology and design secrets behind one of the

Goleulong 2000 Lightship
Goleulong 2000 Lightship is a charity and a joint project
where Churches in Wales are working together to provide a
Christian presence within the Cardiff Bay community.
The Lightship is pleased to welcome visits by schools and groups. Tours, for which no charge is made,
comprise of a short presentation and a conducted walk around the vessel, which tells the story of the
Trinity House Light Vessel 14. The Light Tower can be climbed as part of the Tour and a certificate is
available to celebrate this achievement. Donations towards the work of the Lightship
are appreciated.
The Lightship is currently developing a number of packages that address particular aspects of
the Foundation Phase and the Welsh 3 – 19 Skills Framework. Aspects currently offered:
Foundation Phase
•Visiting the Lightship – support material is available that covers the Areas of Learning for the
Foundation Phase in terms of activities, skills and range.
•Lighthouse Keeper Stories (Ronda and David Armitage) – ‘Story Time’ is available using this
series of stories. It is also possible to add a ‘meal’ package where appropriate to the story title
chosen – there is a charge to cover the cost of the food.
•Christingle – make a Christingle in the Lightship Chapel (available November/December).
A charge is made to cover the cost of materials used.

Literature Wales
Literature Wales administers Writers on Tour, the funding
support scheme which can provide support towards a variety
of literature events. These include workshops, lectures,
readings, conferences or any event concerned with the
practice, promotion, appreciation or development of creative
writing. Literature Wales can also help organise events
and find authors to take part.

National Dance Company Wales
National Dance Company Wales creates inspiring and
entertaining choreography, danced all over Wales, the UK
and internationally by charismatic and virtuosic dancers.
The company is led by Artistic Director Ann Sholem. The exhilarating performances are
complemented by a wide-ranging programme of engaging participation and education work
throughout the community and the development of dance at the company’s home, Dance House at
Wales Millennium Centre.
The company’s range of participatory activities through the year for ages 9+ includes:

Future Dance Cardiff - an annual programme of courses and events delivered in partnership with
Arts Active including Dance Development Days for ages 13-19, summerdance (an intensive week
for ages 14-24 ending in a performance with live music) and Associates (regular contemporary
technique classes for talented dancers aged 14-19 aspiring to move into full-time dance training).
• Jumpstart - a weekend day of dance for ages 9-12.

Tour Workshops - in connection with the company’s tour these 90 minute workshops can be led
in your space or the Dance House. They are led by two professional company dancers and are
based on the choreography the company’s dancers perform on stage. A warm up is followed by a
chance to learn to dance a section of the show, creative work, sharing and a question and answer
session.

Watch Dance Class - artists and photographers are able to sketch or photograph the company’s
dancers in action or you can simply watch the class.
• Open Rehearsal - come and see the choreographer and dancers in action during the creative
process in the run up to the company’s tour première.
•
Interactive Matinees - audience members can take part in class exercises and rehearsals on
stage with the dancers before a full performance of one dance piece and an opportunity to ask
the dancers questions after the show.

Pedal Power
Pedal Power is the Cardiff-based cycle hire charity which aims
to enable everybody to enjoy the benefits of cycling.
At its Pontcanna headquarters, it offers a wide variety of specialised bikes and trikes to overcome
any barriers to cycling that disabilities may present. At its Cardiff Bay base (next to the Doctor Who
Experience), it provides bicycles, pedal buggies and tandems for hire. There is a route around the Bay
which is mainly off road and is approximately 6 miles, taking just over an hour to cycle. Larger groups
can be catered for with advance notice.
This provides an ideal opportunity for school groups to explore the many interesting facets of the
Bay whilst enjoying the benefits of physical exercise.

Techniquest
Your pupils will be inspired by more than 120 hands-on
exhibits, ideal for child-centred learning and investigation.
Techniquest provides a unique experience in supporting teachers in their teaching of numeracy and
literacy with its broad and dynamic science and maths programmes.
For Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 pupils, Techniquest offers interactive shows in the Science
Theatre or digital Planetarium. Key Stage 2 pupils can also take part in a series of workshops in the
Laboratory, allowing pupils to gain practical experience.
School visits are so well organised that teachers can simply focus on the learning experience.
Resource materials are also supplied to help pupils extend the knowledge they have gained when
back in the classroom.
For secondary school pupils, Techniquest offers shows in the digital Planetarium as well as
Mathamagic days in June. Our DNA Workshops, aimed at A and A/S level pupils, use research-quality
laboratory equipment.

The Boathouse: Self-Drive Boat Hire
You’ll find Cardiff Bay’s new family boating adventure at
the Quayside of the historic Graving Dock behind
Techniquest. Here, you will be able to hire and skipper an
easy-to-drive boats, giving you the chance to leisurely
and safely get afloat out on Cardiff Bay’s tranquil waters.
There are two self-drive hire routes and a guided tour option.
Route 1
The circumnavigation of Cardiff Bay where you will have the opportunity to take in its abundance of
wildlife and waterside buildings, both historic and modern.
Route 2
This longer route gives you the opportunity to travel up the River Taff and get up close to Cardiff’s
famous landmark, the spectacular Millennium Stadium.
No experience is needed as a full instructional brief is given on driving, safety, route, terms and
conditions prior to launch. Maximum 6 persons aboard these unique Dutch built boats.

This new experience offers you the opportunity to drive as an experienced guild leads you out on the
Bay and up the River Taff. Great for parties, school trips and team-building days, this hour-and-a-half
journey takes in many of Cardiff’s sights. Group bookings can be made for a minimum of 2 and a
maximum of 4 boats with each boat carrying 6 people (max. 4 adults, 2 children. The main driver
must be 18 years or over.)

The Makers Guild in Wales, Craft in the Bay
You can’t help but find inspiration from the wonderful
array of craft on display in Craft in the Bay’s galleries. They
also have three workshop areas to accommodate practical
activities in subjects such as pottery, sculpture, felt making,
weaving and printmaking.
Open to all ages and abilities, Craft in the Bay can tailor-make a workshop for you and your group.
With time to explore the gallery included in your visit, they offer workshop sessions from one hour
upwards, depending on individual requirements and group sizes.

Third Floor Gallery
Third Floor Gallery exhibits contemporary photography
by internationally renowned artists. In a typical year you
can expect ten different exhibitions, with work that ranges
from current media events and hard hitting documentary
work, to the great solo exhibitions by well established art
photographers.
The gallery’s programme is exciting and accessible, shunning the more academical approach
followed by many larger organisations. All of their exhibitions are free, and the gallery is open from
Wednesday to Sunday, 12-6pm.
• Group visits: If the gallery is contacted in advance, they can provide a guided tour of the current
exhibition by one of the trustees or curators. Groups that have visited the gallery have ranged
from as few as half a dozen to forty. Previously, visits have been organised by local schools,
Cardiff Youth Services, and by photography courses at college and university level. Please enquire
in advance if the displayed work is suitable for your age group.
• Stand Up Slideshows: Once a month, the gallery organises an open event to which beginners,
enthusiasts and professionals can bring their photographs and discuss them. By turns each
participant presents their latest photographs using a digital projector, be it a series that they
have finished or current work in progress. This format works best when the photographs follow
a topic, and can lead to very heated debates. It is popular with university and college students.
• Talks: Third Floor Gallery also organises talks and symposia that are open to any visitors.
Previously they have had Magnum photographer David Hurn talking about how he started his
career in the late 1950s and current projects, Dutch documentary photographer Rob Hornstra
discussing his work in Russia and how to self publish photobooks, Kevin Meredith describing the
joy of photographing with toy cameras and how they led to his publishing career, and many
many more. The best way to keep updated on the gallery’s talks is to request to be added to
their mailing list or following the gallery page on Facebook.

Based in the heart of Wales Millennium Centre, Touch Trust is
a pioneering charity that provides unique creative movement
education for people of all ages who have complex needs and/
or autism. Their sessions involve all of the senses through the
use of music, dance, drama, touch and relaxation.
Touch Trust’s licensed programme not only brings enjoyment and contentment to participants,
but also enhances and enriches their lives through raising their self-esteem and confidence and
reducing feelings of isolation and frustration. It is now delivered, not only in its bespoke base in Wales
Millennium Centre, but also in a large number of special schools and health and day centres across

Tŷ Cerdd – Music Centre Wales
Tŷ Cerdd’s education department offers an original range of
classroom music resources suitable for teachers and pupils
with and without musical experience.
Based on musical works written for Tŷ Cerdd by Welsh composers, children journey through the
magical musical worlds of dragons, dinosaurs, pirates, castles, mystical lost islands and the bones of
our ancient ancestors.
During their musical explorations, children discover the techniques composers use to describe events,

this with other art forms such as dance, visual art, literature and drama. The result is an original
artistic work that is as individual to its creators as it is inspirational to the audience.
Packed with creative fun and musical nourishment for their imaginations, these resources are
available ready to use from Tŷ Cerdd Education. Each project is presented in six lessons and can be
easily adapted to include other subjects.

Urdd City Sleepover
The Urdd City Sleepover is a 4 star, 150 bed hostel and activity
centre under the roof of the iconic Wales Millennium Centre.
It is purpose built for school and youth groups and offers a
variety of workshops, revision residentials, rehearsal spaces
and much more. There are numerous teaching and conference
spaces for students and staff, a fully equipped theatre and
a wealth of resources all under one roof.
The team at the Urdd City Sleepover can arrange a full timetable of activities for residential groups
who want to experience the educational opportunities that Cardiff Bay and the City has to offer.
Urdd Gobaith Cymru is Europe’s leading youth organisation and specialises in organising activities
in fields such as sports, the arts and environmental studies. They can offer curriculum and
non-curriculum based educational residential experiences and day visits to all ages.

a sit down theatre experience. As well as the Donald Gordon
Theatre and Weston Studio programme, there is a selection of
year-round opportunities for schools and communities – any
age and ability, all aimed at enabling the Centre’s visitors to
get closer to art.

World of Boats
World of Boats is an exciting new addition to Cardiff Bay,
complimenting the other range of attractions with an offer
that is enjoyable, educational and insightful. It has over 30
remarkable boats including the Elena Maria Barbara in the
early stages of restoration.
The Boat Lab helps explain the restoration process with carpenters using original tools on site and
hands on displays. The video theatre helps guide you through the evolution of boats and their uses.
Located alongside Doctor Who, it is an all-weather attraction with an all-day ticket. Enjoy a unique
look from the South side of the Bay with World of Boats.
There is a separate education room that can be used for teachers’ activities or as a base for bags and
lunches. There is also a pocket money friendly shop and a fully catered café on site.
