Members and their guests enjoyed an action packed weekend that included two full days of golf competition. After completing practice rounds, Friday night wrapped up with a social, Calcutta, and wine tasting. On Saturday, while players enjoyed a full day of competition, the Ladies enjoyed great shopping and delicious food provided by The Ashford Inn. Saturday night guests relaxed with the sounds of live music provided by The Central Park Band and great food by Simply Southern. Following the final day of competition, golfers enjoyed heavy hors d’oeuvres provided by Simply Southern during awards. Congratulations to our tournament champions Jonathan Williams and Bill Herring. Our member-guest committee consisted of Chairperson Jonathan Williams, Mandy DuBose, Chris Fann, Bryan Griffin, Brent Parrish, Yvonne Rackley, Elizabeth Rogers, Brandon Williams, and Ronnie Williams. Thank you to our committee and everyone else that participated in helping make our 2013 member-guest tournament a success. For more information on member-guest see pages 3 and 5 Camp Kemo We are excited about our next Shag event not just to enjoy good music and dancing, but also to support Camp Kemo. Camp Kemo is a camp that is fully funded by donations and is coordinated and presented by the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, out of Columbia, SC. The purpose of Camp Kemo is to provide a normal camping experience for children with cancer and their siblings. Camp also provides a respite for parents caring for children with cancer and gives them a chance to get away, knowing their children are in the hands of the same physicians, nurses, and staff who provide their treatment throughout the year. Hundreds of volunteers contribute to the success of Camp Kemo and it is recognized as being one of the 1st Pediatric Oncology Camps. The camp is overnight for four nights, and hosts more than 100 children each year. We invite you to come get your shag on at SamCo Shag Club’s Pre S.O.S. Party and Silent Auction in honor of Camp Kemo on September 6th. Enjoy great dancing with music by Robert Stroud and a FREE beginner dance lesson by Pro Dancer John Bradshaw from 7-7:30 pm. The party starts at 7:30 pm and ends at 11:30 pm right here at CCC. All Auction proceeds and 50/50 drawing proceeds will go to Camp Kemo. For more information on Camp Kemo please visit our website at www.cohariecc.com. Couples Golf Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 10 th and Tuesday, September 24th, for an evening of Couples Golf. Couples can consist of husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, or whomever you would like to participate with, but must be a male/female combination. To sign up, call the pro shop by 2:00 pm on the day of the event. Teams will be made at random, and available by 4:00 pm. Play will start promptly at 6:00 pm, so don’t be late! Afterwards, hang around, socialize, and enjoy our dinner service while Dickie tallies the scores and announces the winners. Entry fee is $25.00/couple and includes the cart. We hope you can make it. For more information, contact Dickie Walters at the pro shop. CGA Interclub Playoffs Coharie Makes a New Purchase Coharie tied for first place with Willow Springs in the CGA’s Interclub regular season matches with a record of 4-2. Our only losses came from King’s Grant and Riverwood. Coming in third place was The Crossing Golf Club, out of Durham, NC. Playoff brackets will be announced the first week of September and first round matches must be completed by the end of the month. Thanks again to Randy Wiggins for his leadership. In order to participate in the playoffs, you must have competed in a regular season match. If you have played golf during the weekday lately, you may have noticed a new mower cutting the rough or that the rough is not as tall. Thanks to the Board of Directors, we were able to replace the 12 year old Toro unit with a Progressive Pro-Flex 120. The pull behind unit has a cutting radius of twelve feet. The belt driven decks, allow for faster cutting speeds and the floating wheels help avoid scalping. The unit has allowed us to cut the entire rough areas in a day and a half, compared to the Toro unit taking four days. Randy is excited to have the new unit and he thanked the Board for being so supportive. Employee Spotlight This month we would like to spotlight one of our lounge employees, Ashley Packer. Miss. Packer has been employed with us as a bartender since April. She was born in Carthage, raised in Roseboro, and has always lived in North Carolina. Miss. Packer grew up in Roseboro with her dad, Terry, and sister, Stephanie, who is four years older. She attended Lakewood High School, where she graduated in 2008. After graduation, she moved to another small town near Charlotte where her mom lived called Troutman. Miss. Packer spent five years in a couple of small towns near Charlotte, where she served her first year of college for Accounting and working as a server and customer service representative. After missing her hometown, she decided to move back to Sampson County this past April. Miss. Packer loves spending time with family, especially with her eight-year-old niece Hannah and her two-year-old nephew Nolon. She loves to go shopping and spend time with friends, sing karaoke, bowling, and to watch movies. One thing that most people don’t know about Miss. Packer is that she can sing. She grew up singing at Elizabeth Baptist Church and for many other events. She loves to cook and to try new foods. Her favorite meal is her Grandma’s Chicken and Pastry with cornbread. Miss. Packer hopes to go back to college in the near future for Cosmetolo- gy. She has always wanted a career styling hair and making people pretty. Her long term goal is to own her own business, doing what she loves. Miss. Packer will turn 23 on October 5th so please be sure to come out and wish her a Happy Birthday! Volume 18, Issue 9 Page 5 Labor Day Celebration On September 2nd, we will hold our Annual Labor Day Celebration. Page 6 News From Coharie Board of Director’s Spotlight Coharie Country Club operates under the guidance of a board of director’s which consists of nine members. To show our appreciation to our Board members for their dedication to CCC we would like to highlight one of our board members each month. This month the spotlight falls on Mr. Jeff Nethercutt, our current Board of Director’s President. Mr. Nethercutt is a Clinton native and graduated from Clinton High School in 1978. He attended Wake Forest and Campbell University and graduated from Campbell in 1982 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Economics. Mr. Nethercutt has also been a Coharie member for 18 years. He has been married to his beautiful wife Lisa for four years and has two sons, Hunter and Collin both students at East Carolina University; as well as two step children, Katie who is an English teacher at Hobbton High School and Patrick, a student at Sampson Community College. Mr. Nethercutt stated, “I would like to say that Coharie Country Club has been an important part of my life for more than 40 years. I was introduced to the game of golf and Coharie by Jack and Bill Nance and their father, the late Dr. John Nance. I am committed to making Coharie a place that families enjoy and want to be a part of as well as trying to place the club in a position of financial sustainability. I want to do my best to make sure that Coharie Country Club continues its role in Clinton and Sampson County for generations to come.” Final Pool Update It’s hard to believe that summer at the Coharie pool is winding down. It has been a great summer… but it’s not over yet! The pool will open at its regular hours on Labor Day weekend – Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. We will also have a lost and found area, so if you’ve lost anything (especially beach towels), please check with us. Anything not claimed will be discarded after Labor Day. Thanks to the wonderful lifeguards, Dickie, Amanda, Randy, the lounge staff (who kept everyone hydrated!), and especially to all the members who brought family members and guests to enjoy the Coharie pool this summer. There are a lot of finalists in the “pool attendance competition” and the “pool accessory competition” – you know who you are – but due to the closeness of the race, the competition will have to continue next summer. Congratulations to all the finalists! Please come join us at the Coharie pool for one last weekend over Labor Day!
