PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hello Fellow Turners,
Here we are already approaching the holidays and
some of our northern Turners are getting hammered by
snow. I hope that everyone can take advantage of the
warm, comfortable feeling of being with Turner friends
and family in our local Turner Clubs and enjoy Turner
activities and comradely throughout the holidays and
what looks like a hard, cold winter.
We have just recently completed our National Council Meeting at Concordia Turners
in St. Louis. What a job they did welcoming us and catering to our every need. A
very large Turner thank you for their gracious hospitality.
This meeting had a very full agenda and created an extremely long hard working
weekend. Your National Council worked until late Fri. night and all day and later Sat.
evening than I can remember in recent history. And individual committee meetings
went on into the night.
I want to thank the entire council and guests who worked so hard to make this meeting
a successful one and for their continued dedication to the good and welfare of the
American Turners.
There are individuals and committees working on various projects and endeavors,
from clarifying competition rules to finance, to enhance the future of the organization
and these results will be brought to light as they reach completion.
Minutes of this meeting have been mailed to District Offices, Society Offices and all
Council members for anyone who may want to review them.
While at Concordia I was happy to see the children around participating in activities
and just enjoying the Turners. We need these young people so please include yours
in as much of your holiday festivities as possible. Hopefully one day they will be
able to take part in our scholarship program and/or become Turner members and
leaders.
My fellow Turners I want to wish each and every one of you a joyous holiday season
and a happy and prosperous New Year as well as success to your Turner Societies.

DISTRICT NEWS
Illinois Turner Camp
First Installment
It’s hard to capture everything that summer holds at Illinois Turner Camp in one short article. So therefore, I will be recapping
all the “gemutlichkeit” in a series of articles.
The summer of 2008 marked the 94th season at Turner Camp. This year we had an experienced and hard-working staff
comprised of Robin Constantino (Field Director), Bryon Stevenson (Asst. Field), Mark Kusch (Pool Director), Sam and Sean
Litza (Asst. Pool), and the following counselors, Sam Vinson, Tricia Bialk, Vinny Berrafato, Erin Lau, D.J. Trunnell, Katie
Kaczmarski, and Erin Graham. Many of these young staffers came from a long line of Turners and were following in the
footsteps of their parent’s and/or grandparents who had also worked at Camp many years ago.
A highlight of the early part of summer was the annual Rock Concert. Although it rained, a little rain never stops a Turner
event. The Rock Concert was quickly moved inside to the dining hall where the young Campers performed their own version
of their favorite songs. The staff delighted the audience with their interpretation of “Idiot Boyfriend.”
As usual the Rathskellar was the gathering place for Friday Night Fish Fry’s and Chef Bruce and Grill Master Scott worked hard
to please Turner’s with their weekly specials. On many a Friday night, Dorothy Janssens entertained the old and young alike
with Sing-a-longs at the organ. Dorothy is in her upper 80’s and undoubtedly her playing days are limited, which makes these
evenings something to be cherished.
On Saturday evenings many Turners would gather down at the Rath’s with DJ Ed spinning the tunes. In what has become a
Rathskellar ritual, everyone from age 1 to 90 gathers on the dance floor for the familiar line dances such as “Booty Call” and
“Fat Sally Lee” This year’s hot new dance was the “Cupid Shuffle.”
You will have to look long and hard, and I seriously doubt that you will ever find a place like Turner Camp. A place where both
the young and the old alike can share friendships and camaraderie like we do at Camp. Because Turner Camp is so special,
we are very grateful for the support of the local and national Turner Organizations which have financially supported our recent
improvements to our pool, volleyball, and tennis facilities.

SOCIETY NEWS
Akron (Ladies) Auxiliary
Chicago NW
We are still holding our regular meetings on the second
Wednesday of the month. Our December meeting will be a
covered dish Christmas Party with all the decorations and a gift
exchange. All of our Akron Board members and their significant
others are invited to join us. On December 7th our Auxiliary
will be hosting a pancake breakfast in conjunction with our
annual cookie/bake/variety sale. Each of our Auxiliary Members
is asked to bake 5 dozen of their favorite cookies which we then
mix and package in 2 lb. containers. This year as in the past
our Auxiliary will be making organic Christmas wreaths from
grapevines, pine cones and clippings from evergreen trees.
Some of the decorations are not organic but add just the right
amount of sparkle. Last year we sold about 15 of the wreaths
and hope to do as well this year. Our Christmas donations will
be to the Ronald McDonald House and Handmaker services for
the aging. Our next meeting will not be until March of 2009.
The Obstinate Nonagenarian Who Never Quits
If you ever attended watching the Baers play volleyball at Illinois
Turner Camp in the summer or at the Chicago NW hall during
the cold months, you will have noticed a 90 year old player in
the group. As you watch he matches the speed and skill of the
other players, a generation his junior. Always playing all the
games.
Well folks that is Roy Hugi! A 60 year member of the Turners
with original roots of the former Swiss Turners. Born at the time
when the world was returning to peace from the Great World
War. Raised in Gleason, Wisconsin then moved to Chicago. He
has always been a credit to the Turner organization.
John Neugebauer
Wishing you all the best for the coming year,
Ruth Vera, Auxiliary President

prestigious award presented at the Turner National Golf
Tournament. The award is named in memoriam to Wayne ‘Red
Top’ Davis of Ft. Wayne Turners. The award was established to
recognize participants that best represent our motto of Sound
Mind, Sound Body, sense of fair play and fun over the 46 years
of the National Golf Tournament. Art has embodied these
traits over the 36 years that he has attended. The award was
presented to Art by Cincinnati Turners President Marlene Lintz.

EICHE TURNERS
Tumblers And Members Honored At
Special Awards & Recognition Night
Thirteen members of the Eiche Turners Tumbling and Trampoline
Team were recognized with individual awards at the Society’s
monthly meeting held in August at its Tinley Park, IL, location.
The Eiche Team enjoyed a very successful year that culminated
with the U.S.T.A. (United States Tumbling and Trampoline)
National Meet in Cincinnati in June. During the course of the
year, 21 out of 23 athletes qualified for the National Meet based
on finishing Top 10 in their respective events at State. Eiche
Turners had several State Champions and had two athletes,
Kristle Lowell and Megan Klee, win National Championships
in three different events, as well as a third place Team Award at
Nationals for Sub-Advanced Trampoline. In addition, the Team
had 10 top 10 finishes at Nationals.
“The National Meet was the culmination of all the hard work
the athletes and coaches put in during a very long season from
September through the end of June,” said Tim Mack, Eiche
Turners Gym Board chairman. “At this year’s meet, all the girls
competed hard and enjoyed great success. The athletes and
coaches represented Eiche very well in all respects. We’re very
proud of all of them,” Mack added.
Members of the Eiche Turners Tumbling & Trampoline Team
honored at an awards presentation in August include: (front row,
left to right) Mia Corazzi, Brenna Molinare, Rebecca Klee, Skylar
Witkin and Josie Ehlers; (middle row) Breanna Bottenhagen,
Alyssa Rudsinski and Christa Mack; and (back row) Eiche
Turners Gym Board Chairman Tim Mack, Coach Nicolene Galas,
Mimi Mack, Kristle Lowell, Megan Klee, Julia Junkroski, Haley
Dendler, Head Coach Matt Terlep and Eiche Turners President
Steve Medrow.
The Eiche Turners Team competes throughout the year in many
events, participates in charity fundraising, hosts a summer
camp, haunted house, trivia nights, performs at exhibitions
and annually in the Mokena 4th of July Parade. Athletes from
Frankfort, Tinley Park, Orland Park, Palos, Mokena, Lockport,
New Lenox and Lemont, IL, make up the team.
Also receiving special recognition at the awards night was
Madeleine “Tiny” Cazel, who in 1948 began her athletic career
at the Eiche Turner Hall in Roseland. During the past 55+ years,
Tiny has taken part in many sports and gymnastic tournaments.
She has won countless awards and they continue to mount.
In 2003, Tiny was awarded “Athlete of the Year” by the State of
Florida. She won eight gold medals in various events. In 2005 at
the Senior National Meet, she set new records in both discus
and javelin. Last year in the 70 and over category, she won 11
medals and set new records in the long jump and high jump.
This summer she attended the International Games in St.
George, Utah.
Honorary Eiche Member Madelaine “Tiny” Cazel holds her
Honorary Membership Award presented to her by Eiche
President Steve Medrow.
In addition, Tiny has been a member of the Eiche Women’s
Auxiliary for 50 years. These accomplishments and her life-long
dedication to the Turner motto, “A Sound Mind in a Sound
Body,” more than qualified her for Honorary Membership in
Turnverein Eiche, awarded to her by the membership at their
August Society Meeting.
Also receiving special recognition at the awards night was Bob
Carlson, a 50-year member of Eiche Turners. Bob was the 2008
recipient of the Wayne “Red Top” Davis Award. This award is
presented annually in memory of Wayne Davis, recognizing
the attributes of Turner spirit and sportsmanship at the Turner
National Golf Tournament.
Bob Carlson, recipient of the 2008 Turner National Golf
Tournament’s Wayne Davis Award, was presented with a plaque
by his daughter, Julie, during the Eiche Turners Awards Night.

Sheboygan Turners
Al & Carol Udovich Receive 50 Year Member Pins
President Severns presented to Al Udovich and his wife Carol the American Turner 50 Year pin at the National Convention in
August, 2008. Both Al and Carol have been members of Sheboygan (Wisconsin) Turners since 1955.
Al has held the position of Treasurer for Sheboygan Turners for nearly 44 years. He was President of the Wisconsin District and
is on his third term as Treasurer for the Wisconsin District. He also spent many years on the National Council. Al was inducted into
the Wisconsin District Hall of Fame in 1984 and received the American Turner Honor Key in 1997. He competed in local and District
Volleyball Tournaments and participated in 10 National Festivals.
Carol has been a Gymnastic Instructor at Sheboygan Turners since 1962. She also has competed in local and District Volleyball
Tournaments and Gymnastic meets. In addition she has competed in 12 National Festivals. She was inducted into the Wisconsin
District Hall of Fame in 1993 and the American Turner Hall of Fame in 1997. Both Al and Carol participated in the German Turnfest
in Stuttgart, Germany in 1973.
Prior to becoming a member of the Sheboygan Turners both Al and Carol were professional performers with the Erv Lange
Troupe. This was a teeter board act that traveled throughout the United States and Canada, performing in theaters, night clubs,
circuses and state fairs. They also performed on the Milton Berle Show a couple of times. Al and Carol performed along side well
known entertainers such as Bob Hope, Liberace, The Three Stooges, Abbott & Costello and more.
Al and Carol have been married for 58 years and have two daughters, Roxanne and Michelle, three grandchildren and one greatgrandson. To this day, both Al and Carol are very involved in the Sheboygan Turners. They have devoted their life to Turners and
continue to live by the Turner motto: sound mind - sound body.
Congratulations to Al and Carol Udovich from their proud daughter, Michelle Lesperance.

A TURNER YOU SHOULD KNOW
Q: What Society do you belong to and when did you join Turners?
I have been a member of Sheboygan Turners (WI) basically from birth, but officially became a member in 1978.
Q: What Nationality are you?
½ Slovenian and ½ German
Q: What offices have you held or are holding on the Society,
District and/or National level?
Gymnastic Coach at Sheboygan Turners for 19 years, WI District Turnwarden since 2002,
NHPEC member since 2003 and NHPEC Chairperson since 2007
Q: What enticed you to join Turners?
You might say I learned to walk (and jump, flip, twist and swing) at the Turner Hall and have been involved ever since.
While growing up my parents, Al & Carol Udovich, were very involved in keeping the Sheboygan Turners alive. As they
are still active in their senior years, I am also beside them supporting Turners.
Q: What about Turners impresses you?
The heritage of the Turners – immigrants brought to this country their ideas of
physical fitness intertwined with family life.
Q: What do you find disheartening about Turners?
The decline in membership.
The family unit is not the same as it was, therefore values and lifestyles have changed.
Q: What do you see as the future of Turners?
Not to be necessarily the “Leaders in Physical Education” as we once were but an organization that promotes both
physical and social activities for the whole family and revitalize family values.
Q: What are your personal goals for Turners?
To encourage more involvement from the members we currently have. In turn, I am hoping
they will realize the benefits of being a Turner member and spread the word to friends.
We need to keep the Turner spirit alive.
Michelle Lesperance
Health and Physical
Education Committee Chairman

An Open Letter to All Turner Members
Dear Turners:
During the recent National Council Meeting of the American Turners, in St. Louis, MO, it was reported to
the National Council that a total of 32 scholarships had been granted for the current school year and by so
approving them it created a financial shortfall to provide the needed total of $64,000.
It brought to mind that this scholarship program has been in existence to Turners for many years but until
recently it was rather a dormant benefit little used or known about. From 2002-2007 an average of thirteen
scholarships were granted each year. The 2008 total of 32 was a new record for one year.
For something that has proven so beneficial to so many in recent years it has become an important annual
function that should be sustained and continued at any price.
For the immediate future I strongly recommend each and every Turner member find the way and means to
make a personal donation to the Endowment Trust Fund, earmarked exclusively for “scholarships”, and sent
to the American Turners National Office, 1127 E. Kentucky Street, P.O. Box 4216 in Louisville, KY 40204.
Regardless of current economic problems affecting all of us it would still be a terrible thing if this
scholarship program was left wanting for funding. Our youth are our future and need our support.
I hereby invite and heartily encourage Turners everywhere to make a meaningful donation of a $5 minimum
for this cause and watch 100% of your donation put to use as an investment for our future!
Thanking you in advance for your support, I am,
With Turner Greetings,
Vic Virgens, New Jersey District Representative

National Health and Physical Education
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!
From your National Health and Physical Education Committee
The year 2008 produced only two National Tournaments. While Softball, Gymnastics and Volleyball failed to have any
National event, the Turners did have a successful National Golf Tournament hosted by Syracuse Turners. Congratulations
to the three golfers awarded the Wayne “Red Top” Davis Award this year. They were Art Flowers (Cincinnati), Glenn Reed
(Covington), and Bob Carlson (Eiche). The 2009 National Golf Tournament will be hosted by Akron Turners on July 8-10,
2009. I encourage anyone who swings a golf club to consider attending the Tournament next summer in Akron.
Even though the National Bowling Tournament does not fall under my wing, I do want to extend my congratulations to all
bowlers who participated this past year and to Elgin Turners for hosting the tournament.
Turn Verein Frisch Auf (Aurora) will be hosting the 2009 National Softball Tournament the weekend of July 4, 2009. Get your
Turner softball teams together and take a trip to Aurora to play softball and celebrate the 4th of July.
I know there are still several Societies that have Volleyball teams. If you are interested in hosting the 2009 Turner National
Volleyball Championship and have questions please contact myself or the National Volleyball Coordinator, Phil Klabunde
(Wilmington Turners). A written bid should be submitted as soon as possible. It has been several years since this event has
occurred and it would be a shame if Volleyball completely fizzles out.
Even more Societies have a competitive gymnastic program therefore the Jr. National Gymnastic Championship should be
well attended. There has been debate about what time of year is conducive to a well attended National Gymnastic meet.
The results of my Gymnastic Survey indicate that the majority of the members who responded were in favor of the meet
being held in June. However, if a Society wants to host the event a different month, that possibly can be arranged. Any
Society interested in hosting the Jr. National Gymnastic Championship please contact me and/or submit a written bid as
soon as possible.
Bids for National Tournaments should be submitted prior to the National Council meeting, which is usually held in October.
This allows the host Society to arrange for the event and post advertising in the Turner Topics for all Turner members to
make their plans. In the case of Volleyball and Gymnastics, since I have not received a bid yet, I would accept a late bid as
long is it is feasible to effectively communicate the event information to all Turner members in an acceptable time frame.
I attended the National Convention in August at Fort Wayne Turners and then the National Council meeting in October at
Concordia Turners. I would like to share a few of the changes that have been approved:
• It is now acceptable for a non-member under the age of 18 to participate in Turner National events. However, that child
must be a paying enrolled student of a Turner society for at least 90 days prior to the National event and show proof of
same. There will be an extra fee for a non-member to compete at the National event. All adults must still be a Turner
member in order to participate at a National event.
• Any Society hosting a Turner National event must also have a team from their Society participate.
9
National Health and Physical Education (continued)
• The age requirement for participants at a National Festival has been lowered to 7. The new Youth age groups will be
7-9 and 10-13. However there are some events that vary the age split and some events will not allow the 7-9 age group
to participate.
• Senior Men and Women, ages 60 and over, will only be required to compete in 3 apparatus events in gymnastics for an
all-around score at the National Festival.
• There will be 4 levels of difficulty for gymnasts ages 7-29. The levels will be as follows: Lower (USAG level 4), Advanced
Lower (USAG level 5), Middle (USAG level 6-7) and Upper (USAG level 8+). All routines will still be optional with the
requirements to be published the year prior to the Festival.
• Golf will be a Special Event at the National Festival, therefore the competitor will now earn Society points.
The final revision of the National Festival Rulebook will be posted on the American Turner web site in a few months. There
will be a notice in Turner Topics when the Festival Rulebook is on the web site and ready for you to view all the changes.
Here is some food for thought: A banana a day keeps the doctor away! (not the apple) Look for my report in the next Turner
Topics for the reasons why. Until next time, support your local Turner Society and get involved.

Endowment Trust Fund Report
Scholarships for 2008
This past fall, the American Turner Scholarship Fund awarded a
total of 32 Scholarships, the single largest group ever approved in
any given year. But this statement alone doesn’t begin to tell the
complete story.
What is of even greater significance is that not only were 32
scholarship grants awarded for 2008, they are the largest group ever
approved for scholarships in any given year and for the very first
time each and every one of the recipients had their own sustaining
membership in an American Turner Society!
In addition, of equal importance, was the fact that the funding of
$2,000 per scholarship was provided by four different groups of
Turners; the NYTV 1850 Foundation, the Jahn Educational Fund, the
Endowment Trust Fund and the National organization of American
Turners. For this we offer our profound “Thanks” and gratitude to
everyone involved!
This enabled all of us to share in the fact that every scholarship
applicant who met our requirements, as set forth in the application
form, was accepted. None had to be turned away because of a lack of
funding. These 32 applicants represent 13 Societies from 6 Districts
within the American Turners. They will be attending 26 different
colleges located in 13 different States.
We congratulate all these Turner students and wish them the best in
their varied studies and work towards an eventual degree.
The updated Scholarship application form for the 2009 school year
will be printed in the first issue of Turner Topics in 2009 and it will
also be found on our American Turner National website starting in
January, 2009.
As Scholarships have become such an important asset of our
American Turners, and offer so much for our youth to work towards,
it is worth learning how it all came to be, how it has changed over
the years and what is in the future! In the next couple issues of
Turner Topics we will present the history of our National Scholarship
program, how it has grown along with photos of current recipients
of our 2008 scholarship grants.
For the immediate future anyone wishing to support our Scholarship
program can do so with a donation to the Endowment Trust Fund
and sent to the American Turners National Office, in Louisville, KY
and earmarked “Scholarships”. This insures its exclusive use for
Scholarships only.

American Turners 45th Annual
National Golf Tournament
Hosted by Akron Turner Club
July 8th, 9th, 10th, 2009
Akron is proud to host the upcoming American Turners National Golf Tournament. Thanks to everyone who
has helped make this possible. We are busy right now in our preparations to hold another great tournament.
The host hotel will be the Best Western Executive Inn. Due to a fire in their kitchen last year, they currently do
not have a bar or restaurant. Hopefully they will be operational for tournament time. They do have an outside
pool with courtyard. We are still in negotiations with other hotels in the area for other options. We have
contracted Maplecrest and Seven Hills for our golf courses. Below is information on each location if you would
like to contact them or check out their website.
