FAME Festival
Thank you to all the parents who attended parent/teacher conferences. If you
weren’t able to attend yours, you can reschedule your conference with your
child’s teacher. We hope that your conference was worthwhile. Anytime
you have any questions or concerns just let your child’s teacher know. It
takes home and school working together for a child to reach his/her greatest
potential. Thank you for all you do at home to support our school efforts.
Online Parent Access
Have you set up your parent access account yet? Did you know that you can
check your child’s grades online on a regular basis using this system? Call
our office to receive your activation code, and then go to this web address
https://mcsc-rdsapps.mvsc.k12.in.us/rdsparentaccess to activate your
account. It’s a great way to know how your child is doing in school at all
times.
3rd Grade Reading Test
Starting this spring, all 3rd graders in Indiana will be required to take the
IREAD-3 Reading Test. Students who don’t pass the test may be required to
repeat 3rd grade. There will also be an opportunity for students to retake the
test in the summer. Students who read for at least 30 minutes each evening
do better in school, so please turn off the TV and video games and make sure
your child reads before bedtime.
Lost and Found Items
If your child is missing a hat or gloves or jacket or coat, please check our lost
and found located in our cafeteria. We will be donating any unclaimed items
to Goodwill at the end of February.

Social Workers’ Corner
A group of our fourth grade
students has been working on
a program called “Why Try”? It is a
ten week program designed to get students to realize that we all have challenges in life, but if we make a plan, and
devote time and effort to our goals, we
have the power to be successful. It’s
never too early for our students to think
of their future and to realize they are in
control. Students may not know what
they want to “be” when they grow up,
but they should understand that the
time and effort they put into their education will help them achieve their
goals. They are learning that opportunity, freedom and self-respect increase
when they put in time, effort and have
the desire to be successful. All students
will participate in the “Why Try”? Program at MIS, but some are given the
chance to get exposed to the ideas and
concepts in 4th grade. The students in
the groups have been referred by their
teachers so they can have a head start in
learning this formula for success.
Library News
You Can Use
By Mrs. Donna Phelps
The Lake County Public
Library annual Read-a-Thon
is in full swing. Students should be reading books and getting sponsor pledges
until February 17th. After that, they have
until March 2nd to collect the money
pledged and turn it in to the Fieler Librarian. Thanks to all who are participating.
Also, please encourage students to read
the Young Hoosier Books on display in
the Fieler Library. Students reading all of
the books for their grade level and passing
the tests, will receive a medal at the end
of the school year. Thanks for all of your
support!
Third Grade News
Fieler Third Grade students
have been taking part in the
economic education program
called “Captain Cash”. “Captain Cash”
comes from Purdue University and has
four important financial principles. The
students are learning about earning,
spending, saving, and borrowing. They
took a pre-test before the start of the program and will take a post-test at the end
of all the presentations. The students
learned two sayings so far:
The more you learn, the more you earn!
Every payday, save some cash away!
Third Grade Teachers
Jump Rope for
Heart
By
Mr. Hawkins
Some kids have special hearts and
need your help! All second, third and
fourth graders can raise money for the
American Heart Association and give
these kids the help they need. Your
child took home a packet from their
gym class to raise money. Each child
that can raise at least $20.00 will receive an extra gym class. Please help
us...help the American Heart Association by raising some money for a
great cause. Thank you for your support!
The Smile Program
by Nurse Kim Olmos
Fieler Elementary has partnered with the Mobile Dentist smile program to provide on–site dental care at
our school, because we realize the
importance of taking care of your children’s teeth. The Smile Program has
been servicing schools and creating
healthy smiles for over 14 years. All
dentists are state licensed and will
conduct a complete dental exam.
Please return the completed permission form by Feb. 6, 2012, to your
child’s teacher. Feel free to visit mobiledentist.com to watch a short video
about the dental care program.
Music Notes by Mrs. Kramer
The time of year for music programs at
Fieler is coming up soon. There will be a
music program for all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
graders this spring. The theme for this
program is springtime and the songs are
about things such as rainbows, bunnies,
birds, and spring. Students have already
begun learning the songs in music class.
A date has not been set yet, but a letter
will go home when it is set along with a
permission slip and long lyrics. The after
school choir has also been working hard
to prepare for their FAME performance
on the weekend of March 10th. The
theme is the countries of Southeast Asia,
and they have been learning songs about
festivals, lanterns, and dragons. Choir
practices will continue to be on Tuesdays
from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.
