BATTERY, ANTENNA & TIRE INSTALLATION
BATTERY INSTALLATION
Before your car can be run, you will need to install the batteries into your car and radio
transmitter. A total of twelve AA batteries are required: four batteries are required for
the battery box, and eight are required for the radio transmitter. The instructions for the
installation of the radio transmitter batteries is included in the radio transmitter manual.
To access the battery box remove
the two 3x10mm screws and the
upper battery support.

installed, insert the battery box into
the radio plate and place the upper

ANTENNA INSTALLATION
Slide the antenna wire through the antenna pipe and insert the
antenna firmly into the radio plate.
STEPS FOR PAINTING AND MOUNTING THE BODY
1. Wash the inside of the body with warm soapy water and dry off with a towel.
2. Apply the window masking to the inside of the body.
3. Spray the inside of the body with paint for Lexan. Only use paint for Lexan!
4. Spray the inside of the wing with paint for Lexan also.
5. Allow the paint to dry in a well ventilated area.
6. Remove the clear protective film and window masking.
7. Cut out the body and wing by cutting along the cut line around the body.
8. Attach the wing to the body with the screws and nuts included with the body.
9. Drill the all of the holes indicated below. Hole locations are marked on body.
10. Apply decals to the outside of the body.
11. Adjust body clips on body posts for proper body fitment and secure with body clips.

RADIO SETUP
Steering Trim
Steering neutral adjustments can be made by moving the Steering trim knob to
the left or right.
Racers Tip
When you install a servo always check to be sure the servo is at its neutral
position. Adjust the servo horn hole position and linkage so both are parallel.
When a servo saver is used place it as close to center position as possible. Be
sure the steering trim on the transmitter is at the neutral position.
Trim Operation And Maximum Travel
Changing the trim can effect the overall settings, when adjustments are made
with the trims recheck your installation for maximum servo travel. (Steering EPA
right side and left side).
When Trim usage is extreme
If it takes most of your trim movement to get a servo to the neutral position,
reposition the servo horn or servo saver on the servo and inspect your linkage
installation.
Throttle Trim
Throttle neutral adjustments can be made moving the throttle trim to the left or
right.
Racers Tip
When using a electronic speed control set the throttle trim to neutral and make
adjustments to the speed control. On a gas powered model set the trim to
neutral and adjust the linkage to the point where the carburetor is fully closed in
accordance with the engine instruction manual.
Trim Operation and Travel
Trim adjustments will effect the overall servo travel, check the brake side (backward) movement when changes are made.
When trim movement is extreme
If you use most of the trim movement to get the servo to the neutral position , recenter
the servo horn closer to the neutral position and inspect your throttle linkage.
Steering D/R
Use this function to adjust the steering travel of your model. If the model understeers (push) while cornering, add steering by turning the dial clockwise. When
the model oversteers (loose), take away steering by turning the dial counterclockwise.
Servo Reverse
This function reverses the rotation direction of the steering and throttle servos.
Battery Installation
Slide open the battery door on the bottom of the transmitter. Instal (8) AA
batteries into the transmitter in the configuration molded into the plastic on the
battery holder. Re-install the battery door.
When switched on, the red light on the transmitter should light up. If the red
light blinks, the batteries are low and should be replaced.
**PROHIBITED**
Do not Operate your R/C system within 1 mile of another site where radio control activity may occur.
WARNING
Fully extend the transmitter antenna.
If the transmitter antenna is not fully extended range will be reduced and control may be lost.
WARNING
Never operate in the rain or run through puddles. The transmitter, receiver, batteries and most servos, and speed controls are not waterproof.
Contact with any type of moisture or immersion in water or snow will cause damage along with possible loss of control. Should any type of moisture enter any component of the system immediately stop using the R/C system and return to our service center for inspection.
WARNING
Do not operate two or more models on the same frequency at the same time.
Operation of two or more models on the same frequency at the same time will cause interference and loss of control of both models.
AM, FM and PCM are different methods of modulation. Nonetheless the same frequency can not be used at the same point in time, regardless
of the signal format.

FOAM BUMPER INSTRUCTION
Use scissors to cut out the
template as shown

and follow the outline. Try
to cut into the bumper as
straight as possible.
Follow the outline and
make sure you have cut
deep enough to remove all
of the unwanted material
from the bumper.
The bumper is now
trimmed and there is
enough room for the body
to be mounted properly.

In order for the included body to fit
properly over the front foam bumper, a
portion of the bumper must be trimmed
away. Cut out the foam bumper template
below and follow the steps shown on the
left. Scissors, a sharp hobby knife and an
ink marker will be required to complete
the steps.
KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER
•
Always use NEW batteries when first running the car. When using rechargeable batteries, always make sure to charge them fully before
installing them in the car.
•
Replace the receiver pack batteries in the car EVERY 5-7 RUNS.
•
Make sure that the battery connectors are plugged in correctly.
•
Before running the car, always TURN THE TRANSMITTER RADIO ON FIRST. Check to see that the steering and throttle work properly
before starting the engine.
•
When finished running, always TURN THE CAR OFF FIRST, by stopping the engine and then the power switch. To stop the engine, push
down the foam element in the air filter with your finger to stop air flow to the engine. This will cause the engine to stall.
ENGINE BREAK-IN AND TUNING
It is very important that the engine is broken-in before running.
Please read the YOKOMO 18 ENGINE INSTRUCTIONS before starting your new engine.
STARTING THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME
1. Switch the transmitter ON. Always switch the transmitter on first.
2. Switch the receiver ON (switch on car).
3. Check to see that the servos operate properly.
4. Check to see that the servos are centered properly (front wheels should be straight).
5. Check to see that the throttle lever on the engine is in the ‘closed’ position at nuetral.
6. Extend the transmitter antenna.
7. Familiarize yourself with the range of the radio.
8. Fill the fuel tank with a quality R/C car glow fuel.
9. Close the fuel tank lid securely after filling.
10. Attach the glow plug igniter to the glow plug.
11. Pull the recoil starter to start the engine.
To stop the engine, run the engine until it runs out of fuel, or cover the air cleaner to restrict airflow to the intake.
TROUBLESHOOTING
PROBLEM: Engine will not start
CAUSE:
No fuel in fuel tank
Glow plug is bad
Glow plug igniter is dead
Engine is flooded
Throttle valve not adjusted correctly
Servo linkage not adjusted correctly
SOLUTION:
Fill fuel tank with fuel
Replace glow plug
Replace battery or recharge
Remove glow plug and discharge fuel
Set idle and needle valve to standard position
Set servo to neutral and re-adjust
PROBLEM: Engine will start but quickly stalls
CAUSE:
No fuel in fuel tank
Clog in fuel line, air cleaner or muffler
Throttle valve not adjusted correctly
Engine is overheated
SOLUTION:
Fill fuel tank with fuel
Clean or change clogged parts
Re-adjust idle and needle valve to 2-1/2 turn out
Cool engine and open needle valve 2 to 3 clicks
PROBLEM: Bad engine reponse
CAUSE:
Throttle valve not adjusted properly
Low fuel pressure from muffler
SOLUTION:
Re-adjust needle valve to 2-1/2 turn out
Install pressure line correctly
PROBLEM: Car is difficult to control
CAUSE:
Transmitter and/or receiver batteries are weak
Transmitter has low range
Servo Linkage not adjusted correctly
SOLUTION:
Replace batteries or recharge
Fully extend transmitter and reciever antennas
Set servo to neutral and re-adjust
PROBLEM: Bad acceleration even though engine response is good
CAUSE:
Brake is dragging
Loose clutch nut
SOLUTION:
Set brake so that it does not drag at neutral throttle
Tighten clutch nut

ENGINE PREPARATION
Yokomo 18 engines are compatible with most aftermarket engine parts (muffler, plugs, air filters, etc.) that fit OS engines. We recommend
an OS #8 glow plug, a foam-type air filter (Yokomo #ZE-656), and a muffler that has a fitting to provide pressure to the gas tank.
FUEL
Use fuel designed specifically for R/C cars. Do not use fuels blended for R/C plane or boat engines.
ENGINE BREAK-IN
Proper break-in of this engine is very important. The engine can be destroyed if broken-in improperly. It is very important that THE CAR NOT
BE DRIVEN FOR THE FIRST TANK OF FUEL! Allow the engine to idle while set extremely rich for the first tank of fuel. After the engine has run
through a full tank of fuel at idle, drive the car very slowly for the next 3 to 4 tanks. Make sure that the carburetor is set very rich to allow
extra cooling and lubrication while the piston is breaking-in. The muffler pipe should emit a blue/white smoke at full speed. After the break-in
period and 10 tanks of driving, the engine will be MUCH FASTER! So be patient, and allow the engine to be broken-in properly.
PULL STARTER
Pull about 12” each time to prevent the rope from breaking. Do not pull the rope out completely. If an electric starter box is used, it MUST
spin in the proper direction to prevent damage to the pull starter. Accidentally spinning the flywheel in the opposite direction will damage the
pull starter!
BREAK-IN SETTINGS
NEEDLE VALVE
(Adjusts high speed air/fuel mixture)
2 1/2 TURNS COUNTER-CLOCKWISE from closed.
To find the fully closed position, slowly rotate
clockwise until it stops.
Do not try to turn the needle valve once it stops
(forcing it beyond this point can damage the
needle valve.)
THROTTLE LEVER
(Opens/closes carburetor)
When starting the engine,
adjust the throttle-trim on
the radio to set the throttle
lever at 20% open to provide
extra fuel when starting the
engine.
IDLE ADJUSTMENT SCREW (Adjusts engine speed at idle)
With the throttle lever in the 'closed' position, turn the
screw 1 1/2 TURNS CLOCKWISE from 'slightly open' throttle
opening. The opening should be about 1.5mm or .07".
These settings will provide a good starting point for breaking-in the engine. During break-in, the exhaust should always
emit EXCESSIVE blue/white smoke. Remember that new engines may be difficult to start because the piston and sleeve
have not broken-in yet. If the engine is too rich and cannot sustain an idle, it may be necessary to lean out the needle valve
a few clicks CLOCKWISE if the engine is too rich.
AFTER BREAK-IN
NEEDLE VALVE
(Adjusts high speed air/fuel mixture)
Turn the needle valve 2 to 4 clicks CLOCKWISE
(lean) until the exhaust smoke is light at high
speed under load.
If you do not see exhaust smoke at high speed,
turn the needle valve 2 to 4 clicks COUNTER
CLOCKWISE to richen the mixture.
The normal needle valve setting for a fully
broken-in engine is between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2
turns.
THROTTLE LEVER
(Opens/closes carburetor)
Adjust the throttle servo trim
to adjust idle speed.
IDLE ADJUSTMENT SCREW (Adjusts engine speed at idle)
If the engine idles too fast with the throttle lever fully
closed, turn the idle adjustment screw 1/4 turn COUNTER
CLOCKWISE to close the opening slightly.
The optimum settings for the carburetor will depend on the fuel, glow plug, muffler pipe, weather, etc. We recommend that
the engine always be tuned slightly rich to prevent overheating and damage to the piston and sleeve. Always look for a
slight amount of exhaust smoke to indicate a slightly rich mixture.
MAINTENANCE
Proper maintenance will extend the life of the Yokomo 18 engine. The air filter should be cleaned or replaced frequently. Use new fuel whenever
possible. Old fuel is likely to have absorbed water, which may cause erratic engine operation. After you have finished driving, remove all fuel from
the tank and fuel line and use an 'after-run' oil to prevent internal corrosion. Use denatured alcohol to clean the exterior.

YOKOMO USA warrants your .18 Yokomo engine to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of two years from the
purchase date. If there are any defects with the materials, workmanship, or assembly of your engine, we will gladly repair or replace it for
you at our discretion. Because we cannot monitor the type and quality of fuel being used, and the conditions under which the engine is run,
there is no warranty, expressed or implied, regarding the life of the engine.
NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY:
1) Normal wear, abuse, neglect or any damage arising as a result of improper use.
2) Recoil starters, starter components, glow plugs.
YOKOMO USA shall not be liable for any loss or damages, whether direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential, arising from the use,
misuse, or abuse of this product and any accessory or chemical required to operate this product.
