During the 1994
genocide, Roz was forced to leave
her home. Four months later, she
returned and found her plantation in
ruin. However, at the age of 82, Roz
chose to rebuild. Seeing the many
lost and orphaned children of the
genocide, Roz opened the Imbabazi
Orphanage in December 1994 with 40 children.
We also offer overnight stays in Roz’s
cottage, lunch and
special dance
performances the
last Sunday of
each month.
After spending more than 50 years in Rwanda, Roz passed
on September 29th, 2006, at the tender age of 94. Before
her death, Roz created a foundation with an international
board of directors to oversee operations at Imbabazi. The
board, along with the on-site management team, strives to
continue Roz’s vision and legacy.
Kindly book in advance (minimum 3 days in advance for

Thank you for your generosity.
Rosamond Carr, known to her friends as Roz, came
to Africa in 1949 from America. In 1955, she bought a
pyrethrum plantation in the foothills of the
Virunga Mountains. She fell in love with
both the beauty of Rwanda and the
dignity of its people. For many years,
Roz paid school fees for children in her
community and ran a dispensary from
her back door. Over the years she
endured hardships and experienced
years of tranquility and joy. One of her
joys was her friendship with gorilla
researcher Dian Fossey.
“Rwanda is my home. Its beauty is
my inspiration. Its struggles have been my
struggles. Its grief has been my deepest
sorrow. Its people are my strength and its
children are my greatest joy.”
— Rosamond Carr

GARDENS AND FARM
Utilizing our Assets and Creating Jobs
In 1957, Roz began to create elaborate flower gardens and
sell flower bouquets to hotels in Rwanda and nearby Congo.
By the 1980’s, when she could no longer make a living selling
pyrethrum, Roz converted her plantation into a flower farm.
This tradition continues today. Our gardeners work daily to
keep our ornamental gardens and flower fields in top shape.
We sell flower bouquets for weekly delivery to Kigali, Musanze,
Gisenyi and Goma. Additionally, we offer weekly delivery of
specialty vegetables including artichokes, rhubarb and
mushrooms. All
proceeds directly

to empower future leaders.
OUR WORK
Care for Orphans
More than 400 children have called Imbabazi
their home. Today, Imbabazi cares for orphans in
residence and orphans who have been placed with
families. Imbabazi focuses on preparing children
for meaningful, independent lives through education, life-skills training and supplemental training
including computers and English.
MAKE A
CONTRIBUTION
Most of our children came to Imbabazi when
they were very young. As they grow into young
adults they enter secondary school or vocational
training programs. Through our
Gacutsa program we help children
who have finished their education
transition to independent living. We
give them financial and emotional
support as they find jobs, secure
housing in the community and learn
to budget their money.
Reunification Program
Imbabazi has always been
a working farm. Additionally,
we cultivate potatoes and
corn on a large scale and we have
a herd of cows and goats. Our agriculture initiatives not only
generate income for Imbabazi (used to offset our administrative
expenses) but also provide jobs for our community. Our farm
employs 14 full-time and more than forty seasonal workers.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
In accordance with Rwanda’s government policy to
place orphans with families in the community, Imbabazi
has begun a Reunification Program. Imbabazi identifies
family environments in which children can be placed
including distant relatives and surrogate families. We
have qualified staff members who visit families before and after
reunification to ensure living conditions are safe and satisfactory
and that the child is adjusting well. We only place children in
secure situations where they will benefit from being with a family
and living in the community. Upon reunification, Imbabazi continues to support their education and personal needs and provides
financial assistance to the family.

Community Outreach
As our residential orphanage activities come to a close we
are expanding our activities in the local community. For years
Imbabazi has been supporting Kanyundo Primary School and
the Mudende Health Center by buying books and donating
supplies and plans to continue this assistance in the future.
Our goal is to create new and support existing educational
programs for children and young adults. The Roz Carr Cultural
Center houses our first educational programs; English classes
and computer lessons. These programs are just the beginning.
SPONSOR A CHILD’S EDUCATION
You can make a difference in a child’s life by sponsoring their
