Technology – Autonomous Trucks
Partnership to develop the Autonomous
Haulage technology with Komatsu
Project objective:
• Rio Tinto’s ‘Mine of the Future™’
programme – explore and develop the
use of Autonomous haulage technology
in mining operations
Progress:
• AHS operations successfully deployed in
to different mining areas to support West
Angelas production plan
• All project milestones were met, with
Phase 1 being successfully completed in
August 2010
Next Steps:
• Phase II is currently being implemented
– doubles the number of trucks to 10
– a fully automated haulage system in
the Junction South East pit at

Technology - Automated Drills
Project objective:
• Single operator capable of controlling
multiple drill rigs remotely from Perth
• Consistency in drilling outcomes and
drill utilisation
• Reduce training time to become expert
operators
• Flexible operator assignment between
operations
Progress:
• Currently 3 drills commissioned and
under trial
• Autonomous Control Vehicle (multiple
drill command centre) in operation on
site
• Multiple autonomous rig drilling system
to be commissioned and operational
during 2011
Next steps:
• Phase II planning is underway
