island school is a place of discovery and growth. Its
programs shape identities and nurture character. Its community
provides camaraderie and offers diverse perspectives. Island School
is a laboratory for innovation, with a tradition of academic excellence.
It continues to evolve, and we are pleased to share highlights of the
2012-13 school year with you in this Annual Report.
From its beginnings, several themes have characterized Island School:
•
A shared vision that Kaua`i needs an independent school of stature to complement the large, public educational system.
•
Dedicated individuals committed to bringing this vision to realization.
•
Teachers experienced in various teaching methods and willing to
try new approaches.
•
The belief that a caring school community is central to effective
education.
These themes continue to be relevant - both today and as we look
to the future.
Enrollment levels have reached the highest in Island School’s history and continue to climb toward a projected 500 students. For the
past two years, the Board of Directors has worked to change our
zoning from agriculture to urban center. When accomplished, this
will facilitate our pursuit of new capital projects as funds become available.
Proposed projects include a two-story Science, Math and Robotics Complex and
a Performing Arts Center. [Cont’d. on next page]
Annual
Report
2012 -2013
Island School has instituted blended learning, using online technology to extend opportunities to students who
have either exceeded what is offered through the regular curriculum or to those having difficulty with particular
subjects. Classes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math have grown and now include multiple sections of
video and media production for high school students and robotics at all three levels, elementary, middle and high
school. In the Humanities, English and Social Studies teachers have developed a Sophomore Project. This links
the two disciplines in independent studies of the American experience that will culminate in student presentations
in the spring of 2014.
These few examples are typical of our institution, just the tip of the iceberg. We hope you’ll read on to learn more.
The defining factor of Island School continues to be a caring community of family, friends, faculty, staff, alumni and
volunteers, the Island School ‘ohana. We are grateful to all who give so generously of their time, resources, expertise
and aloha. This report honors you - our ‘ohana - and the many contributors, past and present, who continue to
make Island School the special place that it is.
Aloha,
Robert Springer

The Island School Alumni Association was active this
year, beginning with a reunion for alumni of the Kealia
campus in Koke’e at Camp Sloggett, and continuing with
a photo booth at the Fall Round Up, the annual holiday
alumni reception, and attendance at this year’s auction.
Be sure to check out the Island School Alumni page on Facebook for more information!
Voyager Solar
In November, construction was completed on a 1,200
panel solar farm, located on an acre in the eastern corner
of the campus. It was made possible by Kurt and Arlene
Bosshard, parents of an Island School graduate and owners of Voyager Solar. Island School purchases electricity
from Voyager Solar and sells electricity it doesn’t use to
KIUC. This has reduced our electrical costs by 25% and
made our campus a model of alternative energy consumption. Mahalo to the Bosshards, Rick Fogel, KIUC, REC
Solar, Esaki Surveying, Akinaka & Associates, and Kaua`i
Nursery and Landscaping for their support and expertise!

Thar Be Pirates In Our Midst . . .
The 34th Annual Gala Auction, A Pirate Ball, was the highest grossing event in Island
School’s history. At the close of the evening, $250,000 had been raised to support tuition
aid and operational costs.
Special guest Captain Jack Sparrow and Island School’s very own crew of scallywags
entertained the guests, while “Surfer” Joe Teipel and Emcee Ron Wiley led the audience
through a live auction that included a Ford Focus Electric Car (donated by Kuhio Motors),
a family vacation at the new Disney ‘Aulani Resort & Spa, and a year’s worth of locally
raised, grass-fed beef from A`akukui Ranch. Our steering committee is second to none!
Special thanks to Co-Chairs Lulu Schilleci and Alan King, to the amazing acquisitions and décor teams, and to
the many volunteers who helped to make our Pirate Ball a night to remember.

March 15, 2014 • Kaua`i Marriott Resort & Beach Club
JOIN THE TEAM
Island School’s annual gala auction is the premier fundraising event on Kaua`i, and YOU can be a part of the
team that makes it happen! Volunteers gain valuable
professional skills, make new friends and support Island
School’s tradition of academic excellence.
Email [email protected] for more information.
Mahalo to Adeline Sears
Adeline Sears has been a key member of the auction steering committee (and Island
School’s Parent Association) since her son, Douglas, enrolled in Kindergarten in 2005.
As an acquisitions volunteer, Adeline secured donations for the live, silent and dessert
auctions - always with professionalism, grace, and a keen eye for fine details. The six
auctions Adeline helped to organize raised a total of $1.29 million dollars for Island
School. Mahalo nui loa, Adeline, for your dedicated service. We wish you and your
family all the best as you embark on new adventures.
