Designblok Prague Design and Fashion Week
Designblok Prague Design and Fashion Week The 14th year of Designblok takes place from October 1st to October 7th, 2012 Established in 1999, the international exhibition of design presents current new Czech and foreign designs in the most prominent showrooms and galleries in Prague. Located within exceptional architectural buildings in Prague, the Designblok Superstudios represent the focal point of all events; producers and designers from all over the world present their special installations within an area of over 10,000 m2. Traditionally, Designblok covers fashion and includes the Designblok Fashion Week, where top Czech and foreign fashion designers present their work. The 14th year will have three exhibition centres – two Superstudios for presentations of world and Czech interior and fashion brands, plus one Openstudio for exhibitions on the future of design and presentations of young designers. Fashion Week will be located in the Church of St. Simon and St. Jude on Dušní street, as well as the Mayor’s Residence. Superstudio Bubenská 1, Designblok 2010 Designblok ranks among eight priority events in the City of Prague. Prague has provided not only the three above-mentioned premises, but also advertising space in the lower part of Wenceslas Square, where an installation inviting visitors to Designblok will be located. “Do not run away. After Tuesday, one will not be able to hide anyway. The city will be full of design. Design will permeate the city. The city is the theme of this year’s Designblok, the city as the pivot of life and inspiration. Thus, Prague will transform into the City, which is full of the most ordinary and unbelievable objects and spectacles, into a fast, evanescent, and unforgettable city, into a city that is both playful and perhaps gray and indistinct. In short, Prague will be everything a city and design can be.” (Barbora Ševčíková, czechdesign.cz) “The entire professional public agrees that Designblok is beneficial for Czech applied arts and that its quality constantly increases. Many experts say that Designblok, the most important Czech designer event, has the potential to become more essential than Design Week in Vienna and the DMY in Berlin.” (Kateřina Kadlecová, Reflex 40 – 10) “Prague scores at the expense of London. Designblok is huge and better. (…) One does not have to go to Vienna or London to see new designs in the field of fashion, lights, and glass. Designblok – the biggest show of design in the Czech Republic, which ends on October 10, surpasses London and Vienna with enthusiasm and the number of young designers, plus Czech and foreign companies.” (Alena Řezníčková, idnes.cz, 9.října) The Honorary Board of Designblok: Eva Jiřičná, Architect Helena Koenigsmarková, Director of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague Daniel Heler, Member of the Board of Directors and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Česká spořitelna, a.s. However, this year it took the form of an international Fashion Week. Fashion shows of the best fashion designs offered in the Czech Republic by Czech and foreign fashion scenes took place in the Mayor’s Residence and the Municipal House. Designblok Dreft Fashion Week in Prague represented the feat of the year in the field of fashion for various reasons… The event focused not only on fashion shows, but also on fashion installations; even though the participants had to pay for their participation in the fashion week, the selection did not include everybody, which was a problem related to the previous Prague Fashion Weekend. Designblok did not confuse a Miss with a model and did not hedge its bets on famous names from celebrity circles. It did not pander to commercial or catchy fashion pieces designed by Czech fashion designers whose work is on the same level as the ready-made clothes of a creative dressmaker. Designblok was also adorned with the presence of world-class models, such as Petra Němcová. Daniela Peštová presented the world of haute couture elegance, which is not jazzy. Actresses who have become the faces of specific brands stood up to their roles with nonchalance. Zuzuna Stivínová, who made her biggest exhibition at Designblok, reminded us how much her stay in the USA had changed her, that life abroad had improved her taste. However, the biggest credit for her new image goes to the brands that dress her. (Františka Čížková, Blesk) The month of October has been bound up with Designblok for many years, according to fashion designer Liběna Rochová. She is happy that this “festival” exists. “Designblok and the Dreft Fashion Week are really phenomenal. They have a marvelous atmosphere, save its face - that is what fascinates me,” said Rochová. (ceskenoviny.cz) The week finished with the Grand Gala evening in the Municipal House, where the Editors-in-Chief Awards for Designblok were presented to the winners in 15 categories. The awards were given out by Designblok curators Jana Zielinski and Jiří Macek. The evening included a fashion show that confronted Czech designers with foreign fashion brands in a very interesting way. The closing Grand Gala evening in the Municipal House offered a very diverse spectacle, both on the catwalk and in the form of models, clad in fashion designs that the invited guests and nominees were wearing. (…) The cross-section of various collections was a great idea; the audience had an opportunity to compare Czech fashion creations with foreign ones. Many Czech designers proved that they have an enormous potential.
