U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Conducted by the United States Golf Association Laurel Hill Golf Club July 15-20, 2013 SUPPORTER PROSPECTUS Planning Partners CHAMPIONSHIP BACKGROUND Laurel Hill Golf Club will host the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. It is the nation’s truest grassroots championship as all competitors must be bona fide public golfers and may not hold a membership of any kind at a private golf club. The championship will return to the Washington DC area for the first time in 90 years. This will mark the first time this championship has ever been held in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This fourth oldest USGA championship will be contested at Laurel Hill Golf Club on July 15-20, 2013. This championship will showcase the unique history of Laurel Hill Golf Club as well as Fairfax County. The championship represents an opportunity for your organization to play a critical role in supporting our community and this important national championship for amateur players. T.J. Vogel, 2012 US APL Champion Laurel Hill Golf Club Laurel Hill Golf Club is one of seven golf courses managed by the Fairfax County Park Authority. (An eighth public private golf venture is operating on a long term lease with the Park Authority.) "Visually stunning...a classic golf experience for those who really love golf.“ -Pros N' Hackers "The decidedly different 'municipal' course… rivals any course you'll play in Northern Virginia." -Bud Key of Teetime Golf Pass Ranked 7th Top Municipal Golf Course Nationwide -Links Magazine rating Designed with Care Golf Course Architect, Bill Love, whose credits include the Iron Forge Course at Penn National and Hunting Hawk in Glenn Allen, Virginia, has created this impressive 18 hole course on land that formerly housed the D.C. Department of Corrections facility in Lorton. Bill Love took special care to preserve the delicate environmental and historical assets of this property. Love was involved over the past several years making improvements to the Olympic Club Lake Course which were on display at the U.S. Open Championship in June 2012. Laurel Hill was designated an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2009. This certification recognizes environmental quality in environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, chemical use reduction and water conservation and water quality management. Bill Love, Designer U.S. AMATEUR PUBLIC LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP STORY The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship has been an unqualified success since its inception in 1922, giving exposure to many public-course players who otherwise might not have an opportunity to compete in a national championship. It has previously attracted bus drivers, bartenders, firemen, waiters, riveters, engineers, and college professors. It has been a springboard for the likes of U.S. Open champions Ed Furgol, Tommy Bolt, and Ken Venturi; British Open champion Tony Lema; PGA champions Dave Marr and Bobby Nichols; and Masters winners George Archer and Trevor Immelman. The winner of the event is traditionally invited to the Masters Tournament. COMPETITORS The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship is open to amateur golfers who do not hold playing privileges at a private club with a USGA handicap not exceeding 4.4. Sectional qualifying takes place in every state during June with those 156 qualifiers competing in July for the Championship. In 1959, it produced the first African-American winner of a USGA championship in William A. Wright, who later became a professional golf instructor. In recent years, this championship has been won by several of today’s PGA Tour members, including Ryan Moore, Tim Clark and the 2012 FedEx Cup Champion, Brandt Snedeker. Ken Venturi William A.
