We are still in our infancy as we go into year two of an expanded festival. Last year we showed 20 films including foreign feature films, American Independent features and documentaries. This year we will show 32 films and showcase a talented group of filmmakers! We are also expanding to show films at two locations. We will continue to show movies at Coming Attractions Theatres in Mount Shasta, and will now also present films at the College of the SiskiyousWeed campus Ford Theater. We are grateful to the many local businesses who helped sponsor the Film Festival, advertised with us, and provided generous gifts for the community. At the same time we have a group of great volunteers who have put their hearts into making October 7, 8, 9, 2005 a fantastic event. A three day film festival is a major undertaking and we couldn’t have done this without them. Following our tradition from last year we are offering a free movie to the community as our gift. We are showing the exceptionally crafted Hallmark Entertainment film, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven,” on Mount Shasta internationalfilmfestival Dear Moviegoers Sunday October 9th at 3:30 PM. The film plays at College of the Siskiyous-Weed Ford Theater so there’s plenty of room for everyone. Last year we had a small group of filmmakers attend our Festival. One said, “Mount Shasta is like Sundance without the attitude.” This year we have even more filmmakers coming to conduct Q & A’s with the audience and to participate in a group Symposium. We will have documentary and feature film makers join us for the Filmmakers Symposium at College of the Siskiyous-Ford Theater on Sunday afternoon to discuss all aspects of filmmaking. With our staff, our volunteers, our sponsors and donors we are poised to bring you an unbelievable three days of the finest variety of cinema anywhere. Come and interact with our filmmakers and watch some amazing films. Be sure to attend our free Friday night GALA party at Rare Images Gallery. Make this a wonderful Mount Shasta and Siskiyou County annual event. Join us for a great time. We truly have something for everyone! Buy your tickets early and we’ll see you at the movies. The thought of getting a fashionable haircut or painting your nails is one of the highest forms of expression in a society no longer built on masculine oppression. In July 2003, a group of hairdressers from the Western world descended upon Kabul to open Afghanistan’s first post-Taliban beauty school and to prepare Afghan women for a taste of financial independence as well as freedom of expression. Liz Mermin’s account of their journey shows the profound change in personalities that can come with such endeavors. It also shows an awakening among the American and British women who set out on a mission hoping to do a little bit of good in a place they don’t fully understand. This powerful film confirms that while beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, empowering people to behold for themselves is just as beautiful. G All Ages Born Into Brothels USA Directed by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski • Documentary • 85 minutes College of the Siskiyous, Weed - Ford Theater Saturday, October 8 2:00 pm - 3:25 pm Sunday, October 9 6:15 pm - 7:40 pm RATING: Born Into Brothels directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman chronicle the amazing transformation of the children living in Calcutta’s red light district. Briski, a professional photographer and co-director, and Ross Kauffman provide the impoverished children with cameras and follow them through the streets as they document their world. In the process of learning photography, the children are exposed to a world outside of their own and a narrative unfurls during their journey of learning and self-discovery that may just provide them with the opportunity they desperately need to escape their unfortunate situations. By framing the children in extreme close-ups and juxtaposing their own images with those taken by the children, Briski and Kauffman establish the distinct personality and voice of their subjects while creating a style that is remarkably fresh and beautiful. Born Into Brothels won the Academy Award this year for best documentary film. Filmmakers Michelle Mahrer and Nicole Ma travelled to traditional and modern day rituals to discover what is the altered state experience which people seek through dance. In these rituals, Whirling Dervishes from Turkey, Orisha priestesses from Nigeria and Brazil, shaman healers from the Kalahari and Korea, and dancers in a Gabrielle Roth workshop in New York, pulse to the same beat as thousands of young people at an all night techno dance party in an Australian forest. Dances of Ecstasy celebrates the universal human experience where rhythm and dance unite us. College of the Siskiyous, Weed - Ford Theater Saturday, October 8 8:30 pm - 9:28 pm Dance Party 9:30 pm - 10:30 pm RATING: G All Ages ] Following “Dances of Ecstasy” we have Jef Stott, a talented musician and DJ who will lead those who choose into a dance on the stage of COS Ford Theater for one hour. The music will include World Fusion & Global Rhythms. Dance with us. WINNER HOLLYWOOD SPIRITUAL FILM FESTIVAL BEST DOCUMENTARY 2004 6 The 2nd Mount Shasta International Film Festival Mount Shasta internationalfilmfestival Fragile Machine USA Directed by Ben Steele • Documentary / Short • 34 minutes The film is awash with unusual beauty, gravity, and technique. Fragile Machine is an underground CG film about science, religion, and humanity’s role in nature. Through a unique combination of animation and music which some have likened to an ‘electronic operetta’ it tells the story of the first girl to be built in a factory instead of born from a human. The questions abound regarding her creation. Why was she made? Does she have a soul? Where would she go if she died? We met filmmaker Ben Steele at the Sedona Film Festival and appreciated the beauty and detail of his film. This short is 34 minutes long and shows with Searching For The Wrong Eyed Jesus an amusing human interest tale . WINNER SEDONA INT’L FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL TRIBUTE FOR ANIMATION BEST ANIMATED FILM IMAGINARIA 2005 2005 Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 5:30 pm - 6:04 pm WINNER HONORABLE MENTION DIY FILM FESTIVAL 2005 RATING: A Adult Content Gimme Shelter USA Directed by Albert Maysles & David Maysles • Documentary • 91 minutes The landmark documentary about the tragically ill-fated Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969. Before an estimated crowd of 300,000 people, the Stones headlined a free concert featuring Tina Turner, The Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and others. Concerned about security, members of outlaw biker gang The Hell’s Angels were asked to help maintain order. Instead, an atmosphere of fear and dread arose, leading ultimately to the stabbing death of a fan. What began as a flower-power love-in had degenerated into a near riot; frightened, confused faces wondering how the Love Generation could, in one swift, cold-blooded slash, became a generation of disillusionment and disappointment. ] Guest cinematographer Stephen Lighthill, ASC, filmed Gimme Shelter and will be present to discuss this film and the role of cinematography in filmmaking. Coming Attractions Theatre 6, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 5:15 pm - 6:46 pm Filmmakers Q&A 6:46 pm - 7:16 pm RATING: V Violence L Language High Ambitions in the Himalaya USA Directed by Curt Dowdy • Documentary • 57 minutes Often in the rarified air and extreme climate of the world’s highest mountains, the most important decision a climber may make is when to turn back. High Ambitions in the Himalaya follows six international teammates as they attempt Cho Oyu, a neighbor of Mount Everest and one of fourteen prized 8000-meter peaks (with summits above 26,000 feet). Facing hardships that test not only endurance but also judgment and character, the team is reminded that lessons from the journey are more important than the goal. The film is breathtaking with specially composed Tibetan music. Director Curt Dowdy climbed 26,000 feet to capture the assault on the summit. High Ambitions In The Himalaya is put together with humility. As a result the film has depth alongside challenge and beauty. ] Curt Dowdy will be conducting a Q & A with the audience after his film. He will also be joining our other guest filmmakers for a “Filmmakers Symposium” at COS-Ford Theater on Sunday from 1:30-3:00. WINNER SANTA CRUZ INT’L FILM FESTIVAL College of the Siskiyous, Weed - Ford Theater Saturday, October 8 6:30 pm - 7:27 pm Filmmakers Q&A 7:30 pm - 8:00 pm RATING: G All Ages AUDIENCE AWARD 2005 October 7th, 8th & 9th, 2005 • www.shastafilmfest.com 7 DOCUMENTARIES Kiran Over Mongolia USA Directed by Joseph S. Spaid, III • Documentary • 86 minutes Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 12:20 pm - 1:46 pm RATING: Kuma, a young Kazak man, retraces the steps of his grandfather who was formerly an eagle master, back to the remote mountainous region of his family’s origin. There, in extreme western Mongolia, he fulfills his dream of trapping and training his own eagle. Under the tutelage of a local eagle master named Khairatkhan, Kuma learns not only the ways of hunting with eagles, but also the ways of his own people. Set against the staggering and exotic beauty of Mongolia, Kiran Over Mongolia immerses the viewer in a world forgotten by time. Much of the film was shot on horseback in some of the most forboding, yet austerely beautiful mountains in the world. A great deal of effort was focused on capturing the relationships between eagle and master, and master and apprentice. G All Ages Mad Hot Ballroom USA Directed by Marilyn Agrelo • Documentary • 105 minutes Coming Attractions Theatre 3, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 2:20 pm - 4:05 pm Sunday, October 9 4:30 pm - 6:15 pm RATING: G All Ages Mad Hot Ballroom is an inspiring look inside the lives of New York City school kids on a journey into the world of ballroom dancing, an unexpected arena where they discover new frontiers about attitude, movement, style and commitment. Told from the candid, sometimes hilarious perspective of the boys and girls themselves, the picture chronicles their transformation from typical urban kids to “ladies and gentlemen,” as their school teams strive towards a final citywide competition. Providing unique insight into the incredible cultural diversity that is truly the soul of New York City, first time feature filmmakers Marilyn Agrelo and Amy Sewell profile eleven-year-olds from three public elementary schools. Shooting in neighborhoods, classrooms and in the fifth-graders’ homes, the filmmakers show all the contradictions of this dynamic and intriguing age, when growing pressure to become a “cool” teenager vies with rambunctious childlike innocence. WINNER KARLOVY VARY INT’L FILM FESTIVAL WINNER PHILADELPHIA FILM FESTIVAL BEST DOCUMENTARY AUDIENCE AWARD 2005 2005 Matisyahu USA Directed by David Baugnon • Documentary / Short • 11 minutes Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 4:10 pm - 4:21 pm RATING: 8 G All Ages The 2nd Mount Shasta International Film Festival Matisyahu (which is the name Matthew in Hebrew) is a Hasidic Reggae/Beat Box/ Rapper. This documentary follows Matisyahu as he performs in New York City and explains his conversion to Hasidism and his mission to ignite spirituality in others with his music. This was one of the first films sent to us by Big Daddy Productions in the early days of choosing films for the festival. Since that time Matisyahu has developed a following all across the United States. He projects joy and faith which is why people love his music. This short is eleven minutes long and shows with an exceptional blues documentary called Timbuktoubab. WINNER GOD ON FILM FESTIVAL FILMSTOCK INT’L FILM FESTIVAL AFI SILVERDOCS FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL JURY PRIZE OFFICIAL SELECTION OFFICIAL SELECTION 2004 2005 2005 Mount Shasta internationalfilmfestival The Return of Navajo Boy USA Directed by Jeff Spitz • Documentary • 57 minutes Living for more than six decades in Monument Valley, Utah, the Cly family, part of the Navajo tribe, has an extraordinary history in pictures. In 1997 a white man identifying himself as Bill Kennedy from Chicago showed up in Monument Valley with a silent film called Navajo Boy which he says his late father produced in the 1950s. Seeking to understand his father’s work on the Navajo Reservation, Kennedy returns the film to the people in it. When Cly family matriarch, Elsie Mae Cly Begay, watches the film she is amused to see herself as a young girl and delights in identifying other members of her family. Elsie recognizes her late mother in the old film as well as her infant brother, John Wayne Cly, who was adopted by white missionaries in the 1950s and never heard from again. With The Return of Navajo Boy, Elsie seizes the opportunity to tell her family’s story for the first time, offering a unique perspective to the history of the American west. Using a variety of still photos and moving images from the 40s and 50s and telling their family story in their own voices, the Clys shed light on the Native side of picture making and uranium mining in Monument Valley. Germany / Canada Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 11:00 am - 11:57 am RATING: G All Ages The Ritchie Boys Directed by Christian Bauer • Documentary • 93 minutes They were young. The world’s most unlikely soldiers. As teenagers they had escaped the Nazis. They trained in intelligence work and psychological warfare, and returned to Europe as US soldiers - with the greatest motivation to fight this war: They were Jewish. They called themselves “The Ritchie Boys.” In The Ritchie Boys these remarkable, funny, sharp, brave men share their memories with us. On the front lines from the beaches of Normandy onwards, the Ritchie Boys interrogated German prisoners, defectors and civilians, collected information of tactical and strategic importance: about troop size and movements, about the psychological situation of the enemy, and the inner workings of the Nazi-regime. They drafted leaflets, produced radio broadcasts and even published a German newspaper dropped behind enemy lines. WINNER JERUSALEM INT’L FILM FESTIVAL Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Sunday, October 9 4:45 pm - 6:18 pm RATING: A Adult Content MUNICIPALITY PRIZE 2005 Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus USA Directed by Andrew Douglas • Documentary • 84 minutes Searching for The Wrong-Eyed Jesus is a captivating and compelling road trip through the creative spirit of the South. Director Andrew Douglas’s film follows “Alt” Country singer through a gritty terrain of churches, prisons, truckstops, biker bars and coalmines. This journey takes you through a very real contemporary Southern America, a world of marginalized white people and their unique and homemade culture. Along the way are roadside encounters with present-day musical mavericks including The Handsome Family, Johnny Dowd, 16 Horsepower and David Johansen, old-time banjo player Lee sexton, rockabilly and mountain Gospel churches - and novelist Harry Crews telling grisly stories down a dirt track. This documentary plays with the short documentary Fragile Machine. WINNER SEATTLE FILM FESTIVAL BEST DOCUMENTARY Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 6:10 pm - 7:34 pm RATING: A Adult Content 2005 October 7th, 8th & 9th, 2005 • www.shastafilmfest.com 9 DOCUMENTARIES Timbuktoubab USA Directed by Markus James • Documentary • 44 minutes Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Friday, October 7 4:25 pm - 5:09 pm RATING: G All Ages Blues-based songwriter Markus James has been travelling to Mali and recording original music with traditional Malian artists since 1994, when he made his way to the northern-Mali village of Niafounke to meet the legendary guitarist, Ali Farka Toure. His collaborations with traditional Malian musicians, featuring Mali’s foremost calabash player Hamma Sankare (who toured and recorded with Ali Farka Toure for years), have received excellent critical acclaim in the US and Europe and led to performances in Northern Mali, and now to the new documentary film, Timbuktoubab. The film captures life in Timbuktu with family, friends and other musicians. The desert colors resonate with the fantastic music. We are showing an eleven minute short before Timbuktoubab which features the Hasidic Reggae/Beat Box/Rapper Matisyahu. The two films show unique personalities with original styles of making music. Tuaregs and Toubabs USA Directed by Dottie Leroux • Documentary • 57 minutes Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Sunday, October 9 11:00 am - 11:57 am Filmmakers Q&A 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm RATING: Tuaregs and Toubabs is a rollicking romp through Mali – from the Niger River through Dogon Country, across the Delta to Timbuktu, and, finally, our arrival at Essakane, site of the ‘Festival Au Desert’, in the middle of the Sahara. The documentary showcases the outstanding talent and exuberance of the performing artists – some famous, most obscure. All exotic! Included are a series of vignettes featuring a Tuareg fashion show, a demo of African oral hygiene, a camel’s visit inside the filmmakers tent, and much more. You’ll learn about Islam, women’s roles in desert societies, the Imam, the Griot and the dwarf. The film highlights the joy, diversity, and creativity of Africans; their incomparable musical genius, simple elegance, and open-heartedness. ] G All Ages Dottie Leroux will be conducting a Q & A with the audience after her film. She will also be joining our other guest filmmakers for a “Filmmakers Symposium” at COSFord Theater on Sunday from 1:30-3:00. Visioning Tibet USA Directed by Isaac Solotaroff • Documentary • 56 minutes Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Saturday, October 8 12:00 pm - 12:56 pm Filmmakers Q&A 1:00 pm - 1:26 pm RATING: G All Ages Visioning Tibet presents a unique panorama of contemporary Tibet, revealing geographies and lives of Tibet that have rarely been seen by American or international television audiences. Filmed over nearly three years by an award-winning film crew, it tells the remarkable story of a San Francisco doctor who has dedicated his life to ending preventable blindness in this remote part of the world. The film traces the evolution of Dr. Marc Lieberman’s Tibet Vision Project which began in 1995. It includes the vivid and moving footage of the meetings Dr. Lieberman arranged four years earlier, between Jewish teachers and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Dr. Lieberman has worked throughout Tibet training local doctors to perform modern cataract and lens implant surgery and his project has restored sight to thousands across the Tibetan high plateau. Visioning Tibet is a hopeful and inspiring movie, there is tremendous power in going from blindness to having your vision restored. ] 10 The 2nd Mount Shasta International Film Festival Isaac Solotaroff will be conducting a Q & A with the audience after his film. He will also be joining our other guest filmmakers for a “Filmmakers Symposium” at COS-Ford Auditorium on Sunday from 1:30-3:00. Mount Shasta internationalfilmfestival We Are Dad USA Directed by Michel Horvat • Documentary • 68 minutes We Are Dad follows the lives past/present/and possible future of Steven Lofton and Roger Croteau and their 5 foster children. We juxtapose their family with comments from pundits and “experts” from every side of the spectrum as they chime in on what is today a hot-button issue -- Gay Adoption in America. At the center of the controversy is the Lofton Family. The two HIV negative gay men, who met in nursing school and had at the time, been together nearly 5 years, decided to shed their previous carefree life in South Beach, Florida and focused entirely on fostering as many of these kids as they could. Using a type of tough love these men raise a family where security, love and communication is the norm. ] Michel Horvat will be conducting a Q & A with the audience after his film. He will also be joining our other guest filmmakers for a “Filmmakers Symposium” at COSFord Theater on Sunday from 1:30-3:00. WINNER CINEQUEST FILM FESTIVAL Coming Attractions Theatre 1, Mount Shasta Saturday, October 8 7:00 pm - 8:08 pm Filmmakers Q&A 8:08 pm - 8:38 pm RATING: A Adult Content BEST DOCUMENTARY 2005 USA The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill Directed by Judy Irving • Documentary • 83 minutes The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is the true story of a Bohemian man and his remarkable relationship with a flock of wild green-and-red parrots. Mark Bittner, a dharma bum, a homeless street musician in San Francisco, falls in with the flock as he searches for meaning in his life, unaware that the wild parrots will bring him everything he needs. Filmmaker Judy Irving is a Sundance-and-Emmy-Award-winning filmmaker. Her recent six-film documentary series about the San Francisco Bay Area’s wildlife and open space led to her interest in the wild parrot flock flying the city’s north waterfront. There is a delightful and whimsical quality to The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill as we watch wild birds befriend a wild man for a great symbiotic relationship. ] Both filmmaker Judy Irving and quirky San Francisco personality Mark Bittner will be offering a Q & A after the showing of the film. They will also be participating in the “Filmmakers Symposium” on Sunday from 1:30-3:00 at COS-Ford Theater. S Sexual Situations Diva France Directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix • Feature Film • 123 minutes Coming Attractions Theatre 3, Mount Shasta Saturday, October 8 5:10 pm - 7:13 pm RATING: A Adult Content V Violence S Sexual Situations L Language The Diva of the title is a famous black opera singer who steadfastly refuses to be recorded. The singer is idolized by young French mail-carrier Jules, who sneaks a tape recorder into the theater and records her performance. This is witnessed by a pair of Taiwanese criminals, who wish to profit from the bootlegged recording. They begin to pursue the boy, as do a couple of home-grown hooligans who believe that Jules is in possession of some murder evidence. The serpentine plot leads to a warm friendship between Jules and the reclusive Diva - and to a brilliantly photographed motorcycle chase through the subway tunnels of Paris. Diva, from 1981, is one of France’s most creative and unique films. It combines humor, drama, a Zen hero, a beautiful sound track, bad guys, young love and originality. There is no current distributor for Diva so we obtained the film from the French cultural attaché in San Francisco who had the film shipped from the French government in Paris. For Amélie, who spent her childhood in Japan, this is a dream come true. It is her chance to become a “real Japanese.’’ Eager to please her bosses and co-workers, Amélie diligently accomplishes her daily tasks with invention and enthusiasm. But unfamiliar with the customs of the Japanese workplace, she commits a series of cultural missteps and is singled out as a deviant within the company hierarchy, suffering a string of demotions. The harder she tries, the more wrathful her superiors seem to become, the more unreasonable and humiliating their demands. Unable to stop her downfall, Amélie suddenly stumbles upon her own extraordinary means of liberation. Goorjian • Feature Film • 106 minutes Legendary film director Donald Baines (Kirk Douglas) lies dying alone in his private screening room. Having isolated himself from family and friends, he now regrets many personal sacrifices. His rejection of his illegitimate child, Christopher, whom he has seen only once in 30 years, brings him the most pain. Late one night, Donald is awakened by Stan, a favorite editor who has been dead more than 35 years. Suddenly Donald finds his deathbed magically transported to an old movie house. Stan informs Donald that he has come to help and that he will show him three films - three visions - each vision representing a different period of Christopher’s life. Kirk Douglas still has charisma. Most important however are the various themes of “second chance,” and how “love is never too late.” This American Independent Film comes together in an uplifting and meaningful way. The wide cultural and generational gap between the two is worsened by their lack of communication. Réda finds it hard to accommodate his father, who demands respect for himself and his pilgrimage. The father wants to pray in Mecca before his death. From France, through Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan to Saudi Arabia, the two embark on a road trip that will change their lives. Lud is not too happy with the new man in Myra’s life and tries his best to destroy any budding relationship between her and Reg. Myra finds herself torn between her role as her brothers caretaker and the possibility of finding someone who wants to take care of her. With a gleeful wink to a more innocent cinematic era and classic 1950s romantic comedies, Love, Ludlow invites us into a crisply constructed, smartly stylized universe that exists almost outside of time, filled with delightful anachronisms like typewriters, hair rollers, “gentlemen callers,” and characters who say things like “he’s a card.” WINNER METHOD FEST BEST SCREENPLAY 2005 The Man Who Copied Brazil Directed by Jorge Furtado • Feature Film • 123 minutes André works in a photocopying store by day, and goes home each night to draw comic books. One of Himalayan Buddhism’s most revered lamas, Khyentse (aka Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche) weaves parallel fablelike tales about two men who seek to escape their mundane lives in Travellers & Magicians. Missing the bus, one man hitchhikes with an elderly apple seller, a sage young monk, and an old man travelling with his beautiful daughter Sonam. Along the way, the perceptive yet mischievous monk tells him a story of another young man who sought a land far away: a tale of lust, jealousy and murder that holds up a mirror to the restless traveller and his blossoming attraction to the innocent Sonam. The modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet tragedy of feuding families, is set in the Upper West Side of New York City in the late 1950s. West Side Story is still one of the best film adaptations of a musical ever created, and the finest musical film of the 60s. West Side Story was named the best picture of 1961 and won 10 Academy Awards. This was the first American musical where the late great Leonard Bernstein wrote the music, Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics and famed choreographer Jerome Robbins designed the dance routines.
