2015 Annual Report - Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast
2015 Annual Report A year in review of impact in our community Girl Scout Mission Statement Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. 2 gswise.org • 800-565-4475 A message from the CEO and Board Chair It was a great year for Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE). With 29,172 girl members, GSWISE had the #3 highest market share in the country for all girls with 17.94% market share for girls in grades K-12 and the #1 highest market share in the country for girls in grades K-5 with 33.12% market share. This would not have been possible without the more than 7,300 caring, committed adult volunteers, our Girl Scout families, supporters, and staff. From our #CodeGirl events that introduced over 1,000 girls to careers in STEM (science, engineering, technology and math) to our Cookie Bosses who generated a 109% increase in cookie sales over 2014 while building essential life skills, we provided the opportunity for young girls to dream and believe they can be anything they aspire to be. With the opening of two new offices in the City of Milwaukee which better serve our urban and Latina members, we have increased our ability to bring the power of Girl Scouting to girls living in the most at-risk communities in southeastern Wisconsin and to deliver modifications of our traditional Girl Scout programs, events, and curriculum to align with the unique cultural values and language needs of each community. Christy L. Brown And over 6,800 girls found their “spark” at camp, where their outdoor experiences increased their understanding of and appreciation for nature, while helping them build a unique set of skills and boosting their confidence in ways few experiences can match. In this report, we invite you to discover our many successful outcomes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and how our community’s investment in Girl Scouting has resulted in transforming the lives of thousands of girls during the 2015 membership year. As we move forward, we are committed to bringing even more wow-worthy opportunities to our members. We remain focused on supporting our volunteers in order to deliver a high-quality program experience to girls, helping them discover nothing is out of reach when you are a Girl Scout. Kathleen O’Brien Christy L. Brown, JD GSWISE Chief Executive Officer gswise.org • 800-565-4475 Kathleen O’Brien, PhD, SSSF Chair, GSWISE Board of Directors 3 Cookie Bosses today, CEOs tomorrow Everybody knows that Girl Scout cookies are delicious, but everyone might not know that there’s much more to cookies than…well, cookies. By participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program Activity, girls develop financial literacy. We focus on five skills— goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Spend some time with Girl Scout Cadettes Sabriel and Nailea, and you’ll understand that these skills are not just bullet points on a flyer. The girls learned something new during every step of the selling process. First, each of the girls had to set a goal of how many cookies she wanted to sell. “I thought it was going to be a little easier, but it’s really hard!” explained Sabriel, who was selling for the first time. However, she began to make progress on her goal when she realized how effective it was to network with family and friends. L to R: Sabriel, GSWISE Director of Latina Initiative Vanessa Varela, Nailea, and mom Patricia Sabriel added how she was nervous to approach people about cookies initially, “Sometimes I’m a really shy person, so I’m trying to do better on that.” However, with practice she has grown more confident. Not only do girls need the courage to talk to customers, they have to be prepared and knowledgeable. Naelia expanded on how important it is to know your product, “You have to know what kind of cookies you’re selling,” and you must make sure the customers are “not allergic to anything.” After the girls made a sale, they were responsible to keep a record of payment, count the money, and give change back if necessary. What are they going to do with their earnings? “The whole troop—we made a big decision, we’re going to give it to a foundation called A.L.A.S. It helps kids with disabilities,” shared Sabriel. Nailea explained how this decision strengthened her motivation for her to sell cookies, “If I would meet my goal, I would feel really proud of myself because people aren’t just supporting my troop. They’re supporting A.L.A.S.” Sabriel agreed, “At the end of the day when you see you’ve made a really big, positive change—how I can make a really positive change and my troop can in the community—I think that’s really nice.” “At the end of the day when you see you’ve made a really big, positive change—how I can make a really positive change and my troop can in the community—I think that’s really nice.” - Sabriel The five skills girls like Sabriel and Nailea learn through the Cookie Program Activity lay the foundation for our next generation of leaders. Whether they want to become entrepreneurs or change the world, these skills will serve them for a lifetime. The fact that the cookies are delicious? That’s just a bonus. 4 gswise.org • 800-565-4475 “Girl Scouting has helped me to feel stronger and less susceptible to peer pressure because I am building the leadership skills that are helping me to make the right choices.”—Sarah, 17 2015 Year at a glance The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) encourages girls to Discover themselves, Connect with others, and Take Action to make the world a better place. She found meeting new people her own age to be difficult and stressful. She was good with kids though, and decided to try her hand at becoming a Program Assistant (PA) at Girl Scout Day Camp. The camp environment was a perfect fit to provide her with a safe girl experience. Jennifer found a place where she could accept new challenges without fearing ridicule. Strong organizational skills made her an asset in the administrative area, while her love of children made her a perfect mentor. Empowered with self-confidence, Jennifer returned to camp for six consecutive summers—each year honing her leadership skills by taking on more responsibilities. She was also building practical life skills she could use at home, school and in the community. “What camp gives to PAs, what camp gave to me, is so much more than can be stated in a quick summary,” she said. “Camp gives girls experience... we get experience talking to adults and working with children, cooking, time management, fire building, outdoor skills, survival tips and how to use a hammer to set up a tent. We make friends and form relationships. We share our identities with each other, having the confidence to show our true selves because camp is free of judgement.” “I went from a shy and quiet first year to a loud, energetic, responsible, confident young woman, all thanks to Girl Scouts,” Jennifer said. Jennifer at camp Jennifer is now enrolled in graduate school and is studying psychology because of a chance encounter with a camper’s mom on a hot and busy afternoon at Girl Scout camp. “Jokingly, the mother said I should be a school counselor because I work so well with kids. I laughed at her suggestion but then stopped to think it through.” “Girl Scouts, camp in specific, has given me a future. I am who I am today because of camp. All the good that I’ll do in the future, whether it be at Indian Springs Day Camp as a PA Coordinator or in my future as a school psychologist, I owe it all to the Girl Scout camp experience.” “I went from a shy and quiet first year to a loud, energetic, responsible, confident young woman, all thanks to Girl Scouts.” —Jennifer 8 gswise.org • 800-565-4475 2015 Highlights Girls • At GSWISE, we bring together ALL girls to discover the leaders within. We serve girls in urban, rural, and suburban areas and over 21% of these girls were girls of color and 10% identified as Hispanic. • Over 6,500 girls were reached through our Urban and Latina Initiatives, which bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls who might not otherwise have access to this life-changing opportunity. • Nearly 17,500 girls sold over 2.6 million boxes of cookies and troops earned more than $1.7 million to support their troop activities. This was a 109% increase over the previous year. Their efforts also resulted in thousands of dollars in cookie contributions to local food banks, soldiers here and abroad and a variety of other deserving non-profits. More than 6,800 girl members found their “spark” with a GSWISE camp experience where they made new friends, explored the world around them and learned a variety of new skills. Girl Scout Gold Awardee and 2015 Young Woman of Distinction, Brooke Thirteen girls earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl can achieve in Girl Scouts. In total, over 600 girls found their voice through their Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Award community projects, putting in over 10,000 hours of service and creating a lasting impact in their communities for years to come. In addition, there was a 60% increase in the number of girls receiving their Girl Scout Bronze Award. gswise.org • 800-565-4475 9 2015 Highlights Girls (continued) • • With support from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, 14 GSWISE Girl Scout Junior and Cadette robotics teams participated in the First LEGO League (FLL) competition. Three of those teams advanced to the State tournament. Team LOL, a third-year robotics team from Wauwatosa, won the State competition and received the Champion’s Award, which advanced them to the World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, where their robot placed 39th amongst the 106 FLL teams present. The Status of Girls in Wisconsin 2014, was published by the Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls, in partnership with Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast. It provides a statewide view on indicators that show how girls are doing on key issues such as health, safety, educational achievement, media engagement, mental health, extracurricular and out-of-school time activities. L to R: GSWISE Girl Scouts Lauren, Ananya, Aliyah, and Tien GSWISE was one of three Girl Scout councils nationwide selected by GSUSA to represent the two million Girl Scout voices of the Movement as part of the United Nation’s 59th Commission on the Status of Women in New York City. GSWISE Chief Executive Officer Christy Brown and Girl Scout Ambassador Ananya participated in a panel discussion “The State of Girls – Unfinished Business”. With women comprising 46% of the US workforce but occupying only 26% of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs, and less than 1% of high school girls seeing computer science as part of their future, GSWISE responded to this critical need by launching a Coding Initiative. Nearly 200 Girl Scouts participated in GSWISE’s inaugural #CodeGirl event at Marquette University in May 2015, learning about binary code, loops, and algorithms—also known as coding. 10 gswise.org • 800-565-4475 2015 Highlights Adult Support • A total of 7,309 adult members worked primarily as volunteers, with a 66% retention rate. • In lieu of the traditional fall kickoff meetings for troop leaders, “Back to Troop” open houses were held at our Resource Centers in late August 2015. Over 1,000 volunteers participated, which was a 60% increase over the previous year’s fall kickoff attendance. • The WISE Leader Continuous Learning Series webinar for troop leaders and volunteers was launched. Held monthly, topics included troop management/parent involvement, camp, cookie and nut program Q & A’s, early registration and summer activities, and bridging tips. • GSWISE continues to provide strong adult educational opportunities for volunteers with over 3,300 participants taking part in enrichment opportunities in a classroom setting (59%) and online (41%). Brand • Earned media grew by 27% over the previous year and the range of stories covered in the media was diversified. • Our social media engagement experienced significant growth, including a 43% increase of followers on Facebook versus the year prior. GSWISE opened new program centers in the City of Milwaukee, enabling us to establish a presence in the Layton Boulevard West neighborhood for our Latina Initiative staff and the Riverwest neighborhood for our Urban Initiative staff. gswise.org • 800-565-4475 11 2015 Highlights Community Partnerships Customer Engagement Initiative • • New partnerships were created with Marquette University, Mount Mary University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and University of WisconsinParkside which connected college students with GSWISE programs and events through community service activities related to their coursework. In its inaugural year, 54 students had this service learning opportunity and dedicated over 1,032 hours of volunteer time helping girls develop financial literacy skills through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, leadership and teambuilding skills through urban troop activities, and outdoor skills at our camp locations. GSWISE is in the process of implementing a new way of work supported by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) called the Customer Engagement Initiative (CEI). The goal of the new program is simple—to improve current systems to make the Girl Scout experience even better for volunteers so they can remain focused on impacting the lives of our girl members. This large council-wide undertaking, which began in spring 2015, will be completed by the summer of 2016. During the CEI process, GSWISE will focus on three areas: • Developing a new web platform that is refreshed and easier to use. • Launching a new Volunteer Toolkit that will make it easier for volunteers to manage troops and connect with each other. • Initiating new volunteer systems that will improve relationships between the council and their customers. GSWISE co-planned and produced a coding addition to the STEM initiative resulting in several new partnerships. Partners included Time Warner Cable, Snap-on, Marquette University, Marquette University Computer Science Dept., Code.Org, FIS, Girls in Tech, IT United, and Manpower. Over 1,000 girls were exposed to coding through the support of 45 industryrelated volunteers. 12 gswise.org • 800-565-4475 An icon in the Girl Scouting movement provided life-changing experiences for girls Marion Chester Read carried on the time-honored family tradition of supporting Girl Scouts started by her mother, Alice Chester, who was the founder and first president of Girl Scouts of Milwaukee Area. Marion brought her passion for life and Girl Scouting to GSWISE on a regular basis. She could be found touring Camp Alice Chester via golf cart, hosting events benefitting Girl Scouts, and doing birthday and Christmas shopping for grandchildren and great grandchildren at the Council Resource Centers. As a girl, Marion participated as a Mariner Girl Scout and soon became a leader herself, starting with the Senior Scouts. She also served as a member of the board of directors. “Throughout my adolescent and high school years, I lived the Girl Scout motto each and every day,” said Marion. Marion also cherished the camping, the travel and friendships, the fun, and singing songs from her time as a Girl Scout. “Camping was one of my favorite activities as a child and I enjoyed hearing some of the same songs that we sang in the 20’s when I visited Camp Alice Chester,” Marion said. The world of Girl Scouting not only exposed Marion to an array of role models and personal growth, but gave her the courage to experience adventures of all types. A five-sport athlete in college, she played competitive tennis until she was 92 and was ranked nationally among players 80 and over. She earned a pilot’s license, led three Himalayan expeditions and at age 70, competed in the world cross-country skiing championship in Finland, where she placed first for her age group. Marion’s exposure to these exciting and life-changing experiences in part led her to generous financial support of Girl Scouting, so she could help provide wow-worthy journeys for all girls who, like Marion, can discover their own values, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place. One of her greatest sources of pride and support was for the council’s pioneering work to bring Girl Scouting to underrepresented girls and neighborhoods throughout southeast Wisconsin. Marion said, “This kind of visionary thinking and funding allows kids from different family make-ups to learn about citizenship and social issues, learn about the environment, and my favorite - go camping.” In 1987, as a tribute to the legacy of the Chester Read Family and specifically Marion, the Girl Scouts of Milwaukee headquarters named its center after Marion. Today, GSWISE continues to honor Marion by annually recognizing individuals who have received the Thanks Badge Award, and is still showing significant support to GSWISE, with The Marion Chester Read Award. Marion Chester Read at Camp Alice Chester “Like my mother and her cohorts, the great leaders and visionaries of today continue to make it [Girl Scouts] relevant to the girls of a yet another generation.” - Marion Chester Read Sadly, Marion passed away on October 21, 2014, at the age of 95, but her legacy and generous spirit will inspire and help girls shine for many generations. gswise.org • 800-565-4475 13 Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast Statement of Financial Position as of September 30, 2015 Assets Liabilities and Net Assets Current Assets Cash & cash equivalents Short-term investments Accounts receivable Inventories Prepaid expenses Current portion of unconditional promises to give Total current assets Current Liabilities Accounts payable Accrued expenses Deferred revenue Current portion of defined benefit pension obligation Total current liabilities Property and Equipment Investments Reserve funds Segregated pension fund Campership trust Endowment funds Total investments Other Assets Long-term portion of unconditional promises to give Other assets Beneficial interest in trust Total other assets Total Assets $ 2,547,297 485,693 105,541 332,749 89,791 590,608 4,151,679 9,381,917 8,012,713 2,703,653 264,372 1,269,448 12,250,186 4,665 25,127 130,747 160,539 25,944,321 Long-term Liabilities Long-term Defined Benefit Pension Obligation $ 410,498 608,440 40,236 327,287 1,386,461 3,007,039 Total Liabilities 4,393,500 Net Assets Unrestricted Undesignated Board designated Total unrestricted Temporarily restricted Permanently restricted Total net assets 18,493,487 1,394,952 19,888,439 1,074,852 587,530 21,550,821 Total Liabilities and Net Assets 25,944,321 “We [Girl Scouts] help the world be a better place.
