2015
What a fantastic year for Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest!
For the second year in a row, GSDSW is leading the nation
in membership growth! In 2015, GSDSW achieved a
12.7% growth in girl membership and 5.7% growth in adult
membership. We truly believe in the benefits of the Girl Scout
Leadership Experience (GSLE) and strive to provide the
GSLE to as many girls within our 94,000 square mile region as
possible.
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience engages girls in
discovering themselves, connecting with others, and taking
action to make the world a better place. Even at the youngest
ages of Girl Scouting, girls can gain leadership skills they will
carry with them throughout their lives. Women who were
Girl Scouts feel better about themselves, are more active as
mentors and community volunteers, vote more regularly, are
better educated, and enjoy a higher household income than
do non-Girl Scouts. By ensuring that we develop the skillset
of every girl that joins us, we build a future filled with strong
female role models to inspire generations to come.
Our new year is well underway and promises to be an exciting
one. We are committed to bringing you even more amazing
opportunities for both Girl Scouts and volunteers. Our focus
remains on supporting our volunteer leadership to deliver the
highest quality program experience that we can offer to our
Girl Scouts to help them discover their true potential.
Wishing you a wonderful year,
Diane Flanagan,
CEO
Laurie Johnson,
Chair, Board of Directors

Membership Growth
GSDSW is number one in the nation in membership growth for two years
in a row! This year, 10,595 girls participated in troops and various program
pathways representing a 12.7% increase in girl membership! The girls were
supported by 2,213 adults including 569 lifetime members. This year
4,860 girls experienced Girl Scouting beyond the troop during the school
day, at local program events, and attending resident and local day camps.
Collaborations with other local youth serving agencies continued to provide a valuable service
delivery model to reach girls new to Girl Scouting. Funding from our United Ways has provided the
valuable financial resources to support these “outreach” program opportunities.

In May 2015, the Organ Mountains celebrated their
one-year anniversary of becoming a National Monument.
In conjunction with the Las Cruces Green Chamber of
Commerce and the Bureau of Land Management,
Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest created a unique
Organ Mountains Desert Peaks achievement patch to
reward girls who explore the mountain range.
Encouraging our Girl Scouts to go outside and enjoy the great outdoors is fundamental to the
Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Whether Girl Scouts are discovering outdoor experiences in
one of our summer day camps, with their troop or at resident camp at Camp Mitre Peak, we offer
a variety of ways for girls to enjoy outdoor education. Girl Scouts provides opportunities for girls
to discover, connect, and take action out-of-doors in ways that build courage, confidence, and
character. These experiences increase girls’ understanding and curiosity about the natural world,
and shape girl leaders who are conscientious with regard to the world around them.
The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in
high school, this prestigious award challenges girls to change the world—or at least their corner of it.

2015 Recipients
Allison Denny
Allison worked with the Museum of Nature and
Science in Las Cruces. She created a scavenger hunt
to take people through the different sustainable
features of the museum via a website she learned
how to program herself.
Carmen Dragun
For her project, Carmen matched parishioners of
St. Ann’s Catholic Church with clients of the
St. Vincent de Paul Society and CASA of West Texas.
This project provided parishioners with an organized,
supervised method to help underprivileged families.
Lailah Fournier
Lailah’s project was to promote the care of our senior
citizens and our environment by beautifying their
gardens. Lailah gathered a group of young people
to achieve both goals by planting trees, flowers and
grasses at retirement homes that require minimal care.
Hannah Lamb
For her Gold Award project, Hannah partnered with High
Sky Children’s Ranch. She established an organizational
system for sorting and preparing donations in a
donations house. Hannah also created a procedural
manual for use by volunteers who work in the center.
Hailey Peck
For her project, Hailey trained a Guide Dog to lead a
visually handicapped person. His name is Elton and
he is an 11 month old Labrador Retriever. To satisfy
the sustainability requirement of her project, Hailey
created a blog about her daily experiences with Elton.
Miriam Shayeb
Miriam’s project established a source of book donations
for hospital inpatients. She conducted training
programs for Medical Center Hospital volunteers
on how to include reading and book distribution to
patients, and also conducted a book give-away.
Sally Anne St. Jacques
Sally Anne developed a program to help retired
residents and pediatric patients have the most
pleasant stay as possible through a reading program
that promotes literacy and community involvement.
The Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards
are the highest honors a Girl Scout
can earn. All three awards give girls
the chance to make a huge impact
in their communities, and beyond,
while working on an issue that is
important to them.

FINANCIAL
LITERACY
Through our Product Sales Programs such as the
annual Girl Scout Cookie Program and Fall Product
Program, girls receive their first introduction to
business, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Girls
develop five lifelong skills: goal setting, decision making,
money management, people skills, and business
ethics, all key 21st century business and finance skills.
All of the funds raised in product sales support girl
program. A portion of the money earned through the
product program stays with the troops for funding their
year-long Girl Scout activities.

Gift of Caring
For many years, Girl Scouts of the Desert
Southwest, in partnership with Fort Bliss, have
sent donated Girl Scout cookies overseas to
deployed soldiers. The Gift of Caring Service
Project is a wonderful way to show our soldiers we
are thinking of them. After all, Girl Scout cookies
are not only tasty, but a great American tradition.
In 2015, we sent over 12,347 boxes of cookies to
deployed soldiers overseas!

Volunteer Service
Our wonderful volunteers make magic happen all across our council
and their direct service helps guide girls of all ages along the Girl Scout
Leadership Experience. In 2015, volunteers gave more than 870,000 hours
of their time to mentor girls in their communities.
Girl Scouts also gave back by dedicating over 3,000 service hours through
Take Action projects in their communities. From leading food drives for the
needy to literacy to community clean-up efforts, Girl Scouts took part in
serving their communities in a variety of ways!
2015 Volunteer Conference at Camp Mitre Peak
Our Volunteer Conference at Camp Mitre Peak is a
marvelous way to escape the hectic hustle of city life into
the beautiful Fort Davis Mountains while also developing
the skills necessary to deliver the Girl Scout Leadership
Experience to girls. This annual event presents our
volunteers the opportunity to experience workshops,
trainings, and educational exercises that they might
otherwise have a chance to participate in during one
jam-packed weekend. This event is almost always
guaranteed to fill to capacity and is a unique adventure only
found with Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest.
Our 2015 Volunteer Conference took place the weekend of
September 11th through the 13th. This year, volunteers also
had a chance to enjoy our first pre-conference session,
Outdoor Blitz! This event placed a focus on outdoor survival
skills such as fire building and rappelling and was a big hit!
