The playhouse’s “30 and Under” promotion gives patrons who are 30 years old and younger the opportunity to purchase specially priced $20 tickets to any playhouse production for the entire 2011/2012 season. “We’re always looking for new ways to attract younger audiences and introduce them to the exciting new work we’re doing at the Playhouse,” said Michael Rosenberg, managing director at the playhouse. “30 and Under is a great new initiative that offers affordable ticket prices for this key audience demographic.” Another promotion, “Foodie Friday,” is a pre-show party that was first launched in mid-July that features gourmet barbeque cuisine by Chop Soo-ey, sweet treats by Corner Cupcakes and a complimentary microbrew tasting by Stone Brewing Company for patrons 21 and older. A new addition to Foodie Friday is Devilicious, a San Diegobased food truck vendor featured on the Food Network’s upcoming season of the Great Food Truck Race that serves up sinfully delectable out-of-the-box eats like butter-poached lobster grilled cheese and a PB&J sandwich with cream cheese and bacon. “Foodie Fridays offers patrons a fun pre-show event featuring San Diego’s hottest new trend — food trucks,” Rosenberg said. The next Foodie Friday event will take place before the showing of “American Night” on Feb. 10. The playhouse’s current production, “Sleeping Beauty Wakes,” is a modern-day musical rendition of the classic fairy tale set in a sleep disorder clinic. The musical stars San Diego’s very own Aspen Vincent as Rose — a princess in a 900-year slumber who influences the dreams of the other patients in the clinic. Due to popular demand the production has been extended and will run at the La Jolla Playhouse until Aug. 28. To take advantage of the “30 and Under” program, use the promotional code “culturefix” at checkout. Proper identification must be shown at Will Call to pick up tickets. La Jolla Playhouse’s “30 and Under” deal is not available for Saturday evening performances. La Jolla Playhouse is located at 2910 La Jolla Village Drive. A graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he worked for many years at the corporate management level for chain-store retailers. Miller returned to San Diego to take over his family’s retail business and over the past two decades, he has grown Geppetto’s into one of the largest specialty toy-store chains in the country. Miller has served on both the finance and strategies committees of the Jewish Community Foundation and on the Board of the Jewish Federation of San Diego County. He currently serves as a member of the Boards of Words Alive Literacy Program and the Good Toy Group. Brian and his wife, Danielle, live in La Jolla with their two sons, Nathan, 11, and Jared, 8. • Joshua S. Figueroa, assistant professor of chemistry at UC, San Diego, received the Cottrell Scholars statuette at the Cottrell Scholars Collaborate, a gathering Joshua of recipients of the CotFigueroa trell Scholar Award in Tucson in July. The statue commemorates Figueroa’s acceptance in the community of Cottrell Scholars, and receipt of the statuette and the $75,000 scholar award Figueroa received last December place him among about 240 other members of the Cottrell Collaborative. He was among 11 new members from across the country who were honored at the event. The Cottrell Scholar Award honors outstanding early career scientists in the physical sciences (astronomy, chemistry and physics) for leadership in integrating science teaching and research at leading U.S. research facilities. It is named for science visionary Frederick Gardner Cottrell. Rosemary Murrieta The La Jolla Village Merchants Association (LJVMA) announced it has hired Rosemary Murrieta as its executive director. In her role, Murrieta will work to enhance La Jolla’s reputation as a premier destination for locals and visitors alike. She will be responsible for the daily operations of the recently formed LJVMA, including strategic planning, fundraising, marketing, producing events and managing volunteers. Murrieta, whose grandfather helped establish the city of Murrieta, is no stranger to public service. A graduate of the University of Southern California, she has more than a decade of nonprofit and event planning experience. She served as the director of special events for Downtown Boulder, an award-winning business improvement district, where she was in charge of everything from producing major events to holding monthly mixers to helping craft the organization’s master marketing campaigns. “I know what a successful downtown looks like and how to work hand in glove with local merchants and city officials to get things done,” Murrieta said. La Jollan chases love of photography Heather Wied, a La Jolla photographer, specializes in fine art, landscape, wildlife, commercial and portrait photography. Her photographs have won numerous awards at the San Diego County Fair International Exhibition of Photography, including second place and the Donator’s Award. Inspired by the late adventure photographer Galen Rowell, who noted that photography isn’t just about getting a picture, it is about mental and physical exploration, Wied said she loves photography because the adventure of photographing what she sees but can never truly replicate is a constant challenge. She hopes to teach her sons aboutlife through photography. Being able to shoot Medium format film, 35mm film, and digital photography helps her define her vision using various photographic tools to suit the essence and unique qualities of each subject. Wied developed a love of photography spending her summers and springs snorkeling at La Jolla Children’s Pool. It is here where she developed a love of photography with her first 35mm point and shoot camera. Her love of photography grew as she traveled the world, but it wasn’t until she went to South Africa when her parents gave her a 35mm single lens reflex camera that she began to find her own photographic style. She enjoys local adventures such as finding the perfect La Jolla sunset and loves to shoot portraits. She tries to capture each personality and sense of adventure with each subject. Wied continues to study photography at San Diego City College. After official nomination of Singer during the meeting by trustee Egon Kafka, council members were invited to ask Singer any questions regarding his intentions and goals as a potential trustee. Many of the inquiries revolved around Singer’s motives regarding the La Jolla Christmas Parade. Back in 2005, Singer had been part of a contingent attempting to change the parade’s moniker to the “La Jolla Holiday Parade.” The issue polarized — and continues to divide — members in the community, including some who serve on the Town Council. Some trustees voiced their concern that Singer would revisit his days campaigning for the name change. “Can you say that you unequivocally won’t be involved in any group trying to change the name of the parade?” asked trustee Ken King. Singer insisted he had not actively been involved with efforts to alter the parade’s name in any way in recent years. “You haven’t heard a peep from me in all the editorials [recently],” he said. “I don’t care what it’s called. Forget the name, that’s ancient history.” Trustee Ann Kerr Bache expressed concern that in the past, Singer — JUST instead of first coming to community leaders — had embarked on a “media campaign.” She said she would support him now because of his claims he had moved on and no longer plans to pursue the issue, but also said she had reservations. “I’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt,” she said, “but I don’t think you should get involved in the Parade Committee your first few years [on the council].” Singer, who owns several historic cars that have been driven in various community parades, conveyed a desire to help the parade — but not to try to change its name. “I’ve moved past that incident in 2005,” he said. “I don’t care what it’s called, but I want to have it, and I want to see attendance at it like the Ocean Beach Holiday Parade. No one has a better parade than La Jolla, and I think I can help grow it.” The trustees had another issue with Singer’s election to the council. At a recent Town Council meeting, a new trustee had been elected by a show of hands. Some trustees were concerned about the influence a public vote could potentially have on the outcome of an election, and so — after a motion by trustee Ed Ward — the council voted 13-6 to vote by written ballot. The council then voted on Singer’s nomination. The votes were counted by First Vice President Rob Hildt and Treasurer Cindy Greatrex, and came back 10-10 (with council President Rick Wildman abstaining). Wildman, being forced to supply the tie-breaking vote, voted in favor of Singer’s appointment, and Singer took an oath to “uphold the highest standards of community service,” “refrain from practices that promote self-interest” and “dedicate [his] activities to the betterment of the community of La Jolla.” In other news… • The La Jolla Town Council will host its first annual “Day at the Races” event on Sept 2. Starting with a happy hour at Barfly, participants will then be driven to the Del Mar Racetrack by limo bus to enjoy the races in the private Betty Grable Suite with catered food and drinks and an open view of the course. There is a free concert after the races, and participants can opt to be taken back to La Jolla before or after the concert. $125 Town Council members, $150 nonmembers, $100 per person for groups of five or more. For more information, contact executive director Valerie Strocco at (858) 454-1444 or [email protected]. • The next Town Council SunSetter mixer will be on Aug. 18 at the Destination Event Center, 1020 Prospect St., at 5 p.m. $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers and free for new members who sign up and pay dues at the door. Visit www.lajolltowncouncil.org for more information. • Greatrex announced that Inde- pendent La Jolla is actively fundraising. All but three documents required to put the issue of an autonomous La Jolla to a vote have been submitted. The group, Greatrex said, is looking to raise about $120,000 more. • Trustree Egon Kafka announced that the Streetscape Committee is making an effort to implement some green initiatives around La Jolla, including planters and bike racks, and the group is also gearing up to install the NEWSbrief annual holiday lighting. Kafka said he is always looking for volunteers to help with the installations. • The Town Council heard a presentation by organizers of the third annual La Jolla Art and Wine Festival, to be held Oct. 1 and 2. Benefiting La Jolla elementary schools, the event raised $60,000 last year, and organizers hope to increase that number this year. The council voted unanimously to support the event. Teens accused of Craigslist murder get preliminary hearing date in Oct. Three 17-year-old boys accused of killing a young Mission Beach man who answered a Craiglist ad to buy a computer appeared in court Tuesday and were given an Oct. 11 preliminary hearing date. They are charged with murder in the death of Garrett Berki, 18, of Mission Beach. He was a student at Mesa College and a 2010 graduate of La Jolla High School. They are also charged with shooting at an occupied vehicle and two counts of robbery involving Berki and his girlfriend. Berki and his girlfriend reportedly met with the defendants on May 11 after answering a Craigslist ad for a $600 computer. They met the youths on Fleming Drive in Paradise Hills and were instead robbed of their cash and cell phones at gunpoint. The defendants waived their right Tuesday to have a speedy hearing when they appeared before a San Diego Superior Court judge. Rashon Jay Abernathy, Shaquille Jordan and Seandell Lee Jones have pleaded not guilty and they remain in Juvenile Hall on $5 million bail. After Berki was robbed, he followed the robbers in his car as they turned into a cul-de-sac to try and get their license number. Deputy District Attorney Kristian Trocha said Abernathy fired a shot through a windshield and a bullet struck Berki in the chest. Berki died later that night. Trocha said all three teenagers are legally responsible for the murder under the felony murder rule. “All of them participated in the robbery. The murder was a part of the robbery,” said Trocha. They are being tried as adults. If convicted, they could be sentenced to 25 years to life. — Neal Putnam LISTED 8412 La Jolla Shores Drive 5802 Sagebrush Road – La Jolla 5 BR / 4.5 BA, Ocean View Short Stroll to La Jolla Shores Beach & Kellogg Park $1,900,000 – $2,200,876 4 BR + Office / 3.5 BA, Ocean View Room for a Pool $2,295,000 Open Saturday 4-7 & Sunday 12-3 Open Saturday 12-3 858.454.7355 www.brantwestfall.com DRE# 01365343 4 NEWS THURSDAY · AUGUST 18, 2011 LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS SURF CONTINUED FROM Page 1 event chairs for the invitational, have worked in a yearlong effort with nearly 30 members of the committee and 100 volunteers to ensure the fundraising event is a success. “There’s quite a lot of fun to be had at the event,” said Reynolds. “Even if you’re not into surfing, everybody likes to enjoy San Diego on a beautiful afternoon.” The Luau and Longboard Invitational began nearly two decades ago by John Otterson and Sam Armstrong, two young men who wanted to hold a fundraising event for Moores Cancer Center in a lessblack-tie formal, more relaxing aloha-style party. Despite the concerns that an informal fundraising event would not succeed, the duo was able to raise $25,000 for the cancer center in its first year. “This is the only surf event where we have a valet, but people show up in shorts and aloha shirts,” Reynolds said. Since 1993, the annual Luau and Longboard Invitational has raised more than $5 million to support Moores Cancer Center, one of the top centers in the nation in conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs. Reynolds, a business development manager for Manpower, was first enticed to get involved with the invitational in 1996 from his love of surfing, but his dedication to the fundraiser gained a new meaning when he was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago. Reynolds said the uncertainty of “not knowing who was going to raise my family” was his biggest concern. Today, Reynolds is in remission and takes just one pill a day. “You would never know that I had cancer three years ago,” he said. “I found out through the hard work of the people at Moores Cancer Center and Pfizer, there are treatments available for cancer patients and you really can live a full life. This is just one way for me to give back to the industry that really saved my life.” Tickets to the luau are $150 and VIP tables, seating 10 people, are available for $2,500. The surf tournament is free to the public for viewing. While Diot’s delectable hor d’oeuvres, reinterpreted, fresh Gallic cuisine and delicately sweet desserts account for some mouthwatering menu options, the famed chef and his cuisine are not the only reasons to visit the fine-dining, coastal restaurant this summer. Every Thursday evening in August, the Tapenade patio transforms into another time and place with the sultry sounds of multilingual singer-composer Sacha Boutros. Throughout the summer, Boutros transforms the upscale coastal bistro’s patio into a Parisian cabaret with smooth jazz performances of songs by famed French artists like Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour. Boutros has performed at Tapenade several times in the past few years, but director of special events, Sylvie Diot, said they are delighted to work with her on a regular basis to help establish an authentic cabaret-style ambiance. Diot said that the idea for transformation of the patio into a French cabaret was inspired by the new Woody Allen movie “Midnight in Paris.” “Everybody has been delighted with the movie,” said Diot. “We are excited to continue with this cabaret-style theme.” Tapenade’s happy hour and tapas bar menu features $7 cocktails, $6 wines, $2 off premium wines by the glass and $1 off Corona and Amstel Light beers. Revelle’s Charles David Keeling apartments are projected to be Leadership in Energy Efficient Design (LEED) platinum certified, a first for any structure on campus. The Keeling apartments’ sustainable features pay homage to their namesake, the first scientist to record the rise of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. The energy-efficient apartments house 510 beds and feature solar panels that allow residents to bathe with water heated by sunlight instead of gas or electricity, and control heat through shading and through naturally assisted kitchen and bathroom exhausts. All of UCSD’s new housing facilities feature drought-tolerant landscape, natural ventilation, solar panels and recyclable building materials, helping the new buildings earn LEED gold certification or higher. The projects are consistent with the university’s longrange goal of housing 50 percent of all of its students. No state money was used in the projects. The new apartments at Muir College consist of two towers housing 275 beds. Muir College is regarded as an exceptionally intact example of the modern architectural movement in the 1960s in San Diego. The original designers, Robert Mosher and Dale Naegle, were highly regarded architects of their time. The new housing Left: The Muir apartments consist of two towers housing 275 beds. Above, The Keeling apartments' sustainable features pay homage to their namesake, the discoverer of the Keeling Curve. The apartments are expected to be LEED platinum certified. Courtesy photos will enable all second-year Muir College students to live on campus and enhance their opportunity to participate in the academic and extracurricular life of the Muir College community. With the completion of the Muir and Revelle projects, UCSD is able to offer a three-year guarantee of oncampus housing to this year’s incoming freshmen, one of only two campuses in the UC system able to extend this offer. Members of UCSD’s incoming transfer class will get to experience the newly completed housing community for transfers, the Village. The Village neighborhood, in the works for five years, consists of Village West and Village East, a total of 13 buildings, two of which are 15-story high rises with ocean views. The first phase, the Village at Torrey Pines West, featuring 1,000 beds, was finished in May 2009 and officially opened January 2010. The second phase of the Village, featuring 805 new beds in apartment-style living, was completed spring 2011. Also opening its doors within the Village is The Bistro, a new restaurant that will feature table service, dining by reservation, a sushi bar, outdoor seating, convenient online to-go orders and specialty Asian-themed products. Adjacent to the eatery is a new market with one of the widest varieties of products on the campus. — Staff and contribution Former La Jolla attorney dies suddenly Jim Kinder, formerly a longtime resident of La Jolla, died in his home on Aug. 14. Sources say the cause of death was a heart attack. Kinder, who lived in Carlsbad at the time of his death, was often the subject of stories in the news. A former attorney practicing out of La Jolla, he was involved in hundreds of lawsuits since the 1970s, often as the plaintiff. Kinder gained notoriety in the mid1980s when he was sentenced to 190 days in jail for helping a widow forge a marriage license to her recently deceased common-law husband to collect survivor’s benefits. Kinder, who had been ordained as a minister through the mail by the Universal Life Church and signed the marriage certificate, kept one-third of the money paid out from the man’s union and insurance companies for himself as a legal fee. In 1988, a hearing panel of the State Bar of California recommended that Kinder be disbarred because of his involvement in crimes of moral corruption, and he resigned shortly after. Kinder went on to own and operate a number of businesses: Rainbow Towing, Rainbow Rent-a-Car, Rainbow Carpet Cleaning and Rainbow Auto Repair. Kinder was 66 years old. — Staff and contribution NEWS 5 THURSDAY · AUGUST 18, 2011 LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS UCSD facilities nominated for ‘blooming’ architecture, design BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS The Orchids and Onions awards, a fundraising program hosted by San Diego Architectural Foundation (SDAF), is back again this year with nominees for this year’s beauties and stinkers. SDAF’s awards program promotes both positive and negative community dialogue on architecture, sustainability efforts, interior design, historic preservation and landscape architecture by offering San Diego citizens the opportunity to nominate and comment on recently completed or developing projects. This year, UCSD has planted the seeds for a crop of orchids on its campus, winning three nominations so far for promising architecture and interior design while also promoting sustainable development. Nominees include UCSD’s Rimac Annex and The Village at Torrey Pines East for orchids in architecture and the UCSD Sustainability Resource Center for an orchid in interior design. All of the projects also share a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency in its designs. Architectural nominee Rimac Annex, built by Bauer and Wiley Architects, provides additional recreational facilities including lounges, meeting areas and retail space to the existing three-story building on the hilltop overlooking Torrey Pines Cliffs. Natural ventilation circulates throughout the building and wooden-paneled screens control solar heat gain in an effort to reign in excessive energy usage. “We are thrilled to hear that the Rimac Annex has been nominated for an Orchid Award,” said Don Chadwick, director of UCSD’s Facilities Planning and Management. “Prior to the construction of the Rimac Annex, the north campus of UCSD contained a variety of very fine, but loosely knit sports facilities. The center and south end of the campus contained the Price Center and Student Center — nice gathering spots for students, but north campus needed it’s own ‘sticky place.’” Since its completion in 2009, the annex has served as the social hub for students and faculty at the north end of campus. Another notable architectural nominee adhering to UCSD’s campus-wide sustainability efforts is The Village at Torrey Pines, an eightbuilding, 148-unit student-housing complex with full-service restaurant and retail market. The project was designed by architect Boone Hellmann to meet LEED certification standards, setting a standard in identifying and implementing measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. “The Village is more than just a housing complex,” said Mark Cunningham, executive director of Housing and Dining Services. “From the first day of move-in, students and their parents have raved about the apartments and their sustainable fur- nishings as well as many architectural features of the project.” UCSD’s interior design nominee, the Sustainability Resource Center by CitiZen Design Studio, boasts an LEED gold certification from its use of sustainable materials and services in every facet of its construction. The library, meeting room and office space is home to UCSD’s Student Sustainability Collective, located in the Price Center. The environmentally friendly workspace features reclaimed and recycled flooring, countertop and casework materials, recycled glass wall tiles and a glass storefront to maximize natural lighting. UCSD officials say they adhere to high standards in sustainable practices, including the Green Building Policy and Clean Energy Standard for all proposed and renovated buildings to improve the university’s effect on the environment and reduce its dependence on nonrenewable energy. For more information about building projects at UCSD, visit physicalplanning.ucsd.edu/projects or call (858) 534-2230. SDAF is accepting nominations for 2011 Orchid and Onion Award nominees until Aug. 31. Or even worse, discovered it right after your car runs it over? You want to report the problem to the city when you get home but by the time you get there you have forgotten the location of the pothole. Unfortunately, with no one reporting it, the pothole only gets larger and more dangerous. This scenario has unfortunately become a San Diego tradition and is a common story I hear when meeting with residents. They are frustrated by the state of their road conditions and feel that there should be more simple and efficient ways to report potholes in La Jolla. After hearing these concerns my office decided to partner with an outside firm to develop “San Diego 311” a Smartphone app and online widget that serves as a one-stop shop of city services and streamlines how those services are provided. La Jolla residents can report potholes, abandoned vehicles, graffiti, illegal dumping, broken sidewalks H and much more instantaneously from their Android, Blackberry or iPhones. The program can also be accessed online through an online widget. San Diego 311 uses the latest technology in geo-tagging technology to automatically provide the problem’s location when residents report problems from their phones. This simplifies the reporting process for residents and speeds up the time for city employees to respond to the report. This program finally catches the city up to modern-day technology and creates a new platform that will cut costs and provide an instrument that easily allows residents to report problems in their community. San Diego 311 literally puts city services at residents’ fingertips, and I hope you’ll join me in downloading this app to start improving our community today. For instructions on how to download the App and Widget, visit http://www.sandiego.gov- /citycouncil/cd5/, contact our office at (619) 236-6655 or email [email protected]. GUEST COMMENTARY By Patricia Weber Symbol of peace An inert object am I. Of flesh and blood, I am not made. I make no sound, but I have a voice. If you listen, you can hear me speak. My message is of peace, love and brotherhood. Reaching into the heavens, I stand erect and proud. Powerful in my form and bearing, I bring thoughts of the goodness of the earth. People of many faiths and dedications pass through my shadow. Lingering on my outstretched arms are the spirits of brave warriors who sacrificed their lives to keep the world safe from malice and hatred. Did our warriors die in vain? There are factions who harbor hostility and aggression around the world and even toward me. Should they tear me down, I will stand here still in the mind’ eye, resolute and timeless, forever stretching my arms to the heavens pleading for freedom and peace. I am not a living thing. My substance is eternal. No sound do I make, but if you listen, you can hear my voice. I am the cross on the hill overlooking La Jolla. History: In 1913, the first small wooden cross was erected, only to be burned down in 1923. The second memorial, constructed of stucco over a wooden frame, was erected in 1934, but it was blown down by strong winds in 1952. The present cross was built in 1954. It stands 29 feet high, mounted on a 14-foot step-down platform. A group demanded removal of the cross in 1989 claiming that a religious symbol stood illegally on government soil. A legal battle for its removal continues. The preservation of the Mt. Soledad Cross and Memorial Walls is largely due to the efforts of dedicated members of the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association. Today, the cross remains a tribute to those who have served honorably in the United States Military. Potholes in 2050? In 1950, coming south on the old Route 5, a visitor had to pull a quick right-hand turn around an old gas station where a wooden sign said “To La Jolla.” The ride down the Torrey Pines “Grade” was like a ride on a roller coaster. Since then, the road has been graded and paved so that cars now slither at high speed to sea level. Before the visitor gets to the streets of the village proper, he or she would be wise to have car insurance in order, check seatbelts and have a phone number handy for a tow truck. That would prepare him or her for driving over some of the potholes in La Jolla’s village streets. — Patricia Weber lives in La Jolla GUEST EDITORIAL Help your pet survive the summer heat The Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA) is helping pet owners and animal lovers across Southern California with useful tips on how to survive the summer’s high temperatures. In the summer heat, many cats, dogs and other pets can suffer from a wide variety of ailments, including dehydration, exhaustion, heat stroke and more. With a few preventive measures and safety precautions, however, pet owners can protect their beloved animals and help them enjoy these fun months. Here are some important tips: 1. Drink up. Ensure your pets always have cool, clean water that is easily accessible. Drinking water is the best way for pets to avoid dehydration. Plus, remember that water warms up fast, so replace water dishes frequently to keep them cool and clean. 2. Keep it cool. Make sure your air conditioning is on or that your windows and doors are open. Cross-ventilate to keep air moving through your home. You can also cover windows by using shades, blinds and curtains to block the hot sunlight during the day. 3. Not in the car. Never, under any circumstances, leave your pet in a car. Within just a few minutes of being trapped in a hot car, your pet’s temperature can rise to dangerous and lethal levels. And remember, rolling down the windows or parking in the shade while your animal is in a car is not acceptable. 4. Take it easy. Too much exercise, particularly in the middle of the day, can exhaust your pet during the hot summer months (especially for older pets, short-nosed dogs and pets with thick coats). Try to take walks and exercise with your pet in the morning or evening, when the temperature is cooler. Also, avoid walking on hot concrete or asphalt and instead use soft grass areas if possible. 5. Don’t get buggy. Fleas and ticks can be extra problematic during the summer. Make sure to use flea and tick treatments recommended by your veterinarian, as over-the-counter products can be toxic to some animals. 6. Apply the lotion. Some pets can get sunburned, especially if they have light-skinned and exposed flesh on their noses, ears and other body parts. Talk to your veterinarian and apply appropriate sunscreen to your pet’s vulnerable areas. 7. Watch it. Pets can’t tell you L A J OLLA V ILLAGE N EWS B EACH & B AY P RESS P ENINSULA B EACON D OWNTOWN N EWS they’re stressed by the heat, but you can notice multiple telltale signs. These include heavy panting, constant thirst, dizziness, lethargy, unusual clumsiness, fast heartbeats, glazed or unresponsive eyes, vomiting, excessive salivation and deep red or purple tongue color. If your pet exhibits any of these characteristics or behaviors, contact your veterinarian or animal hospital immediately. 8. Take action. If your pet is succumbing to the heat, here are actions you can take before seeking professional medical assistance: move your pet into a shaded or cooler area; place your pet in cool (not ice cold) water; apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet’s head, neck and chest; help your pet suck on ice cubes or drink water. “The summer is a time to play and have fun, but it also unfortunately can be a dangerous period for our favorite pets,” said SEAACA executive director Dan Morrison. “We are here to spread the word and give pet owners tips on how to help animals survive the heat. A few precautions can save a pet’s life.” For more information about SEAACA, visit www.seaaca.org. Just over a year ago, after doing only four months of stand-up comedy, Armstrong delighted Bella Roma’s owner with his comedy routine, and she asked him to do a one-hour show. As a newcomer to the scene, he didn’t have enough material for a show of that length, but after talking to some friends, he put together the first “Geoff with a G” comedy showcase last summer at Bella Roma, and the showcase has been a hit ever since. “The show is not your average open mic production. It is a unique, genuinely hilarious event that takes place in your own backyard,” said Bryan Loven, a regular visitor to the showcase. “All the comics are very polished and being a comedian myself, I can confidently say that they are amongst the most funny in San Diego.” Each month, Armstrong hand picks a new lineup of comedians that he finds in the local comedy circuit, all the while tweaking the format based on the crowd’s response and his own insight. “I do this show for selfish reasons. I do a show that I’d like to see myself,” Armstrong said. “If you crack me up, you get on my show.” The format, performers and performance content change each week, but Armstrong is dedicated to selecting the best performers for his team. He selects anywhere from six to eight performers for the 90-minute show. In addition, he sometimes does his own improvisation to feel out the crowd or adds short “pop-in” comedians to pick up the energy level. He also iterated the need to start and finish with strong performers. Although the performance is an all-ages show, he advises those with young children or “thin skin” to find an area of the restaurant away from the stage. “It’s still a comedy show,” he said. “I don’t censor my comics.” Armstrong said the best thing about the show is that it provides an opportunity to see a live comedy show in La Jolla without having to spend a lot of money. “I just care that everyone has fun,” he said. “It’s like hosting a party — you want to make sure everyone is satisfied.” “Geoff with a G” Armstrong, center, launched a monthSeveral comedians, including Feraz ly comedy show at Bella Roma Restaurant, second from Ozel, Erik Westland, Jennifer Kelley and top, featuring different comedians each show. The small family restaurant serves up excellent Italian food, along with entertainment on select nights, ranging from comedy to music. Without a doubt, Bella Roma’s signature event is its weekly open mic night. Held each Friday, the night is hosted by a rotating cast of performers, including “Sweet” Joyce Ann Martin, who has helmed the fourth week of each month for the past three years. She next hosts on Aug. 26. The night has developed into a showcase for established musicians, who play short “guest” spots, as well as the latest crop of up-and-coming singer-songwriters. It takes a special person to coordinate a night like this and there are few music fans as devoted as Martin. She arrived in San Diego in 1967 at age 14, already writing and playing guitar. Building up an arsenal of original songs, Martin has emerged as one of San Diego’s best-known performers on the coffeehouse circuit. In addition to taking the stage on her own, she is also part of the duo Wild Older Women, (or WOW, for short) alongside viola player Annie Rettic. They released a new album, “Unleashed,” last month. Her love of song craft has also led her to a role in helping upand-coming musicians as the head of the local chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), with monthly meetings at Bella Roma. While being able to draw a small group of supporters is a plus, Martin notes there are other things she looks for in performers. “I look for a certain stage presence and songs that deserve to be heard,” she said. While some open mics are open to spoken word and other art forms, Martin emphasizes this evening is meant for music. She’s open to various musical genres, but notes there are limitations. “It’s a family restaurant, so that’s a consideration,” she said. Bella Roma’s six-channel board — which limits large groups — and the night’s quick turnaround between acts are also factors. Despite Martin’s own musical career doing well and more touring ahead in the wake of the new album, Martin won’t be leaving her night at Bella Roma anytime soon. This chance to connect with local artists and perhaps give them a little exposure is dear to her. “I schedule my other shows and when I go out of town around it,” she said. Martin is clear on her favorite thing about this open mic night: working with young artists. She cites 14-yearold Cheyenne Martinez as a current favorite. “We get a lot of families because of the location,” she said. “It’s been great for everyone, but it’s been particularly nice for younger players. I’m completely surprised by the confidence of the younger performers.” Even after three years of hosting, Martin continues to be enthusiastic. “Nothing brings me greater pleasure than watching a musician develop and grow,” she said. “I am so honored to be part of the music scene and be able to support musicians. I love to hear the original songs that come out of people, especially when they didn’t know they had it in them.” “Sweet” Joyce Ann’s Open Mic Night: Friday, Aug. 26 at Bella Roma, 6830 La Jolla Boulevard #103. 8 p.m. All ages. In La Jolla (and for a wide radius around) it’s always the most important social event of the year to be at, be seen at and be a part of. The entire Las Patronas membership — 50 of La Jolla’s most dedicated, creative and talented women — works the entire year to ensure that it deserves its well-earned reputation. More significantly, it always raises an exceptional sum of money (in the neighborhood of seven figures) to benefit 12 major — and many more minor — beneficiaries. It’s the Jewel Ball, the 65th anniversary iteration of which graced the grounds of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on its traditional first-Saturday-inAugust date. Sue Wagener chaired this year’s event; Pat Marsch and Elaine Murphy co-chaired (Elaine will chair 2012’s Jewel Ball). The theme, “Sapphire,” was inspired by the ocean and our seaside jewel, La Jolla. Designer Kathy Broekma’s décor ran to blues and greens, with coral, white and silver highlights. Guests entered through an undersea “tunnel” lined with blue fabric on which semicircular cutouts hung like thousands of bubbles. Fishbowls with live residents were set into the wall. Mermaids and sea creatures entertained poolside and the bridge across the pool was decorated with blue and silver bubbles (creatively used CDs and Christmas balls) and five lighted arches. Lavish hors d’oeuvres included fabulous lamb chops, fresh-made sushi, tasty sliders, lightly fried battered vegetables and the event’s famed seafood bar. An army of hard-working bartenders kept the guests refreshed. Entering the ballroom for dinner, partygoers found a new touch — the stage was positioned across the opposite end of the area and huge projection screens improved the view for those most distant from the stage. Surrounding walls were draped in light blues, over which shimmering strings of tiny lights and crystals simulated bubbles. Overhead, very long strings of light blue lights ran the length of the ballroom area. Some dining tables were round; others square. Some had banquette seating on one side, and many of the individual chairs were made of clear plastic. At the ends of the ballroom were lounges with couches and low tables. The ambiance was reminiscent of an exclusive, luxurious, high-class supper club. Every Jewel Ball is beautiful in its own unique way, but several guests said this was the most gorgeous they’d ever seen. At a wedding, Jennifer Greenfield “discovered” the band Liquid Blue. The name was perfect for this event, as was the music. With 14 musicians and dancers, they kept the party rocking. The women of Las Patronas were having a great time themselves, and the bandleader brought them onstage, saying, “We travel all over the world. If any of you ladies want to dance with Liquid Blue, let us know.” Dozens of clear plastic beachballs (more bubbles!) were batted around the dance floor as the party continued enthusiastically until 1:15 a.m. Then, the Las Patronas members changed from gowns to “grubbies” to begin the party’s tear-down and cleanup, so the LJB&TC could resume its regular business later on Sunday morning. the straight part of the racetrack, ending with the finish line. The backstretch is the straight section on the other side of the track, but the term also describes the area where horses are stabled, trained and maintained. Backstretch workers include exercise riders, grooms, trainers and others, many of whom work for relatively low pay, despite the dangers of their occupations. Since 2001, the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation (EGF) has raised more than $3.5 million for scholarships and other education programs to improve the quality of life for backstretch workers and their families. On Aug. 8, EGF’s eleventh annual fundraising event was held at the Grand Del Mar resort, drawing 300 attendees and raising approximately $100,000. The event honored Oak Tree Racing Association (OTRA) for its role in the success of the thoroughbred horseracing industry and its generous contributions to EGF over these 11 years. At a reception on the resort’s lush lawn, guests enjoyed tray-passed taste treats, wines and music from a guitarist and a steel drum player. Inside, after a delicious dinner, Del Mar GM/CEO Joe Harper (once an OTRA employee) emceed the evening’s program in a most entertaining and humorous way. A video told OTRA’s story and officials from both organizations spoke (again, with much humor). Everyone seemed pleased with the program, the venue and EGF’s effectiveness in aiding the In horseracing, the homestretch is backstretch community. *** Gregson: left: Missy and Tom Robbins, Jenine Sahadi (event chair; also Gregson Foundation president), Dr. Stephen Dorros and Sandra Dorros Gregson: right: Sarah and Jon Kelly, Joe and Barbara Harper, Melissa and Mike Ernst LA JOLLA LIVING THURSDAY · AUGUST 18, 2011 LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS 11 Local doc sticks his neck out for turtles BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS It's not easy performing surgery on a turtle. But it's a regular challenge for local exotic animal doctor Jeff Jenkins. Just like humans, turtles are prone to bladder stones, or the backyarddwelling pets have also been known to eat foreign objects like metal screws or wires, calling for an emergency surgical removal. It's also no rare occurrence for a turtle crossing the road to get hit by a car and subsequently be brought by the city's Animal Control Services to Jenkins' Mission Valley practice, Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital, located at 2317 Hotel Circle South Suite C. As was the case with Crash, a large tortoise found wandering the streets of La Jolla last October and brought to Jenkins with a severely damaged shell. "Someone had run into him and he had a huge gash that extended from the left rear leg up to the spine," said Jenkins, a 13-year resident of University City. "His lungs and intestines were exposed through the crack, and it made it very hard for him to breathe, just like a person whose lungs collapse." Jenkins and his team, including his wife and office manager, Lisa, cleaned the dirt out of the shell, drilled holes and surgically mended the shell with wires. But just like an egg that cracks, a turtle's shell may lose some pieces after a major injury. "The shell is only about as thick as your thumbnail," said Jenkins, "It has a quick underneath, like a nail." Jenkins covered Crash's cracked shell with bone cement and then applied a layer of fiberglass cloth, which he adhered with a fast-setting epoxy adhesive. DON BALCH | Village News — Kendra Hartmann FI E LD VI EW Chargers’ special teams show they may be super special The La Jolla YMCA gymnastics team has been making its mark lately — at home and abroad. The team was one of six U.S. teams to compete at the World Gymnaestrada in Switzerland in July and also performed well at the National U.S.A. Group Gymnastics competition in Burbank in June. Courtesy photo The La Jolla YMCA gymnastics team was one of six U.S. teams to be invited to the 14th annual World Gymnaestrada, from July 10-16 in Switzerland. The team attended the event along with more than 30 countries and 60 participating gymnastics groups. There, they completed multiple group gymnastics performances, including a flash mob, which they performed on command with all other participants multiple times in public during the trip. The World Gymnaestrada happens every four years in a different country and is the world’s largest gymnastics event. Competitive teams from all over the world are invited to participate. The La Jolla team had previously attended the event in Austria four years ago. The team also participated in June at the National U.S.A. Group Gymnastics competition in Burbank. They performed competitively against group gymnastics teams and received the Judges’ Choice Award for best routine of the year. The La Jolla YMCA gymnastics department recently received a grant for $16,000 from Las Patronas, funds that have helped it purchase new equipment. In case you’ve been surfing all summer, we have news for you. San Diego Chargers football is back! The La Jolla Village News got a recent taste of the preseason opener Aug. 11, giving us a chance to offer up this preview of the upand-coming season. At Qualcomm Stadium last Thursday, the Chargers butted heads with the Seattle Seahawks. And even though the final scoreboard showed Seahawks 24 and Chargers 17, Bolts fans can feel confident that this could be (dare I say it?) a Super Bowl year. 06 731 5 . c Li 5763 La Jolla Blvd. Ph. 858-454-4258 rohdeplumbing.com Voted a Reader’s Choice for Plumber! Quarterback Philip Rivers seemed pleased with the quick start at halftime, with San Diego going into the locker room with a 10-0 lead. “The goal was to drive and get points on the board [on the team’s first possession], preferably score a touchdown, and we were able to do that,” Rivers said. “Obviously, there'll be some things we're going to try and clean up, but we need to stay involved the rest of the game. Overall, it was a good start." It also was a good start for new special teams coach Rich Bisaccia who, after having spent the last nine years in Tampa Bay, was hired after the Chargers experienced last season what some would arguably say was the worst special teams unit in NFL history. Not to flog a dead horse, but last year, the Chargers’ special teams allowed four kick returns for touchdowns, four blocked punts and averaged less than 19 yards per punt return. Looking ahead now, will this new coaching change really make a difference? “All I had to do was miss one tackler, my teammates did everything,” said Charger’s newcomer Brian Walters, who ran back a kick return for 103 yards, in the process scoring his first professional touchdown Thursday night. “It was a well-designed play. You have to give all the credit to the coach who designed the play and to the guys up front.” Well-designed play, Mr. Walters? I don't think so. It was an amazingly welldesigned play! That being said, coach Bisaccia said he is not content with just one touchdown return during a preseason game. “We've got a long ways to go,” Bisaccia said. “We're just at the beginning stages.” Well, if that is just the beginning, we are excited to see where it all ends. You can view my coverage of the game at www.sdnews.com and listen to my game calling of Brian Walters’ first professional touchdown.
