Since the inception of CoPro in 1999, Israeli documentary films have come of age in their continual development of style, quality and diversity these documentaries have come to embody a more complete picture of the complexes nature of Israeli and Palestinian society for both local and international audiences. In collecting and editing the content of this catalogue we have come to realize that Israeli filmmakers are more now than ever open to understanding their subject matter in an ever increasingly open and pluralistic way. It is with this in mind that the Docushuk each year aims to create a new and fresh presentation of categories in order to better guide you in your selection of content that is best suited for you audience. Docushuk, the only Israeli buyers market, is the last station a film reaches in the total development process of the CoPro Market, which has come to represent the 'House' of Israeli documentary cinema, beginning with the development of the script through the CoPro Pitching Forum until the point of contact with buyers and distributors around the world. We wish to thank all who have collaborated with us on this years' Docushuk. Chantal Yazbek and Smadar Baram The Docushuk Team th As Part of the 11 Israel Market for International Co-Productions 3 4 GREETINGS Dear Guests Colleagues and Friends, In recent years the Israeli filmmaking industry, in all of its realms, has been doing very well all over the world. Especially notable is the global successfulness of the Israeli documentary making. Israel has a community of highly talented makers of documentaries, docu-drama and animated documentaries. The Israeli annual productivity is outstanding and state-of-the-art by comparison to other countries of similar size. All of which enabled us to bring into being the seventh edition of Docushuk, the Israeli market of documentaries since 2003. CoPro sets the best of the Israeli documentaries produced that year into one corps, mapping them by themes. Looking further ahead, Docushuk is set up for the future advent of new marketing platforms. In a time when the different genres overlap and are no longer distinctive, and the documentary films integrate animation, computer games and interaction, Docushuk, as we plan it to be, will exhibit the revolutionary digital media, offering our overseas guests a wider variety of genres. I'd like to thank the wonderful Docushuk team: Copro's Project Manager, Chantal Yazbek, for her dedication and determination to keep up with Docushuk's quality even in this troubled year, and to the Docushuk's Coordinator, Smadar Baram, for her dedicated and witty assistant. My thanks to filmmaker Dan Geva for his enlightening article opening this catalogue, and thanks to the Pais Culture Commission and the Ezvonot Foundation for co-sponsoring the 2009 Docushuk. I wish our esteemed guests enjoyable and fascinating viewings. Orna Yarmut Initiator and CEO, CoPro - Documentary Marketing Foundation 5 GREETINGS Dear Friends and Colleagues, The Israel National Lottery through the council for the Arts aims to help the diverse and vibrant Israeli film industry to be even more flourishing and competitive. We work closely with the film industry – provide funding for: script development, short film production, film export and distribution, film education, preservation and archives, festivals and audience support schemes. One of our aims is to build diversity and inclusion. Our budget is modest, but we try to stretch it to the utmost. In this respect it is always very rewarding to cooperate with the Israeli Forum of Co-Productions. The National Lottery Council for the arts supports the forum for the third consecutive year. "Docushuk" is the single platform within Israel which aims to promote and market the Israeli documentary film industry. Throughout the years we witnessed the impressive development of this scheme. Its consistent activity exposed 250 Israeli documentaries – the harvest of the last couple of years – showing a vast and profound image of Israeli society. The Forums activities provide a platform exposing the richness of Israel's local creativity. Not only does "Docushuk" better represent the ace of Israel internationally, it also strengthens globally the professional ties between film directors and producers. Wishing you success, Estee Du-Nour Director Israel National Lottery Council for the Arts 6 Dan Geva on The Nature of the Documentary Act Common belief has it that the nature of the documentary act stems from a humanist approach to human beings, who just so happen to be the principle subjects of this particular form of filmmaking. This nature originates in our interest in, and dealings with, people’s individual existences on equal footing, or so we like to think. Precisely because this assumption is historically inaccurate (though you’d be hard pressed to find a documentarian who will happily admit it) we need to question the nature of the documentary act and look into the ways it plays out in Israeli documentary filmmaking, especially over the past decade. That Israeli filmmaking addresses burning issues is, well, trivial. We can safely say that Israeli documentary filmmakers’ obsessive engagement with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Holocaust, new and old waves of immigration, the ultra-Orthodox minority, and human subjects who have been recognized as downright oppressed, physically and emotionally crippled, injured, shocked, awed, weakened and simply screwed-over, communally ostracized and/or discursively marginalized, to say nothing of the plight of the fat, the dying and exhibitionists of one kind or another, and, last but not least, those documenting themselves and their immediate surroundings—is both natural and understandable, and there's really nothing new or surprising about it. From an esthetic point-of-view, a glimpse at the sheer variety of documentary styles and genres at the forefront of recent Israeli documentary output, reveals personal chronicles, filmic diaries, thematic films, thesis films, historical documentaries that deconstruct and reconstruct national narratives with the help of archival footage, films that look on from a safe distance or films that get up-close and intimate, road movies, investigative reportages of greater or lesser boldness, autobiographies, portraits, essay films, and, quite recently, animated works. As a matter of fact, practically everything has been tried and tested here, all cinematic forms of expression in all possible genres, based on the holy trinity of American Direct Cinema, French Cinéma Vérité and British Griersonian Realism. 7 Dan Geva on The Nature of the Documentary Act And so, in a personal tone, Amit Goren makes us privy to his concerns, and those of his family, divided between Israel and the US, in his film '66 WAS A GOOD YEAR FOR TOURISM (1992). In FOR MY CHILDREN (2002), Michal Aviad tells her kids about something that will forever remain absent from their lives. Ibtisam Maraana takes us on a seemingly sentimental trip to her native village in PARADISE LOST (2002). These documentary filmmakers appear to live their life through the camera. They tell their story in the first person singular, turning images from the world they depict into no more than objectified settings for the "real thing," namely, the narrator who becomes the film's core rationale and exclusive interpretive channel, without which the filmed images become insignificant. This is how the filmmaker manages to present us with the perspective we so hunger for, and are accustomed to, as cinema has always provided us with the promise of a personal story from which we may infer things about ourselves, and the world at large. And indeed, the notion that one singular private case embodies the essence of a fixed human condition is deeply rooted in Western poetics, science, philosophy and the so-called Judeo-Christian ethic. It echoes in many a film produced and funded today, as well as in the way we perceive and know films “to be.” On the seemingly opposite side of the documentary spectrum, as far as style is concerned, we find works based in the tradition of American Direct Cinema. Filmmakers such as Ido Haar in NINE STAR HOTEL (2006), tell the story of Palestinian young men forced to live clandestinely in Israeli territory in order to make a living; in CHECKPOINTS (2003), Yoav Shamir depicts the systematic alienation, inherent to any military domination over civilian populations; in DETAINED (2005), Anat Even and Ada Ushpiz construct a single standpoint through multiple viewpoints with a disciplined dramatic structure. Ada Ushpiz's BRIDES OF THE DESERT (2008) and BLOOD ENGAGEMENT (2004), in themselves a variation on a similar theme, function within the same paradigm. It's a working method that sells itself with the slogan of an "observing" camera (as if there is a camera that observes without an observer), rather than an "interfering" one (as if the creation of a single frame is not an act of interference in itself). Not enough has been said about American Direct Cinema, but sticking to the point here, and having to keep it short, it's hard to interpret those films, and any Direct Cinema-style movie for that matter, based on its sale tag alone: "Unmediated exposure of the world as it appears to us." Rather, it should be thought of as its logical opposite: Exposure of the ultimate concealment, i.e. the filmmakers’ denial and self-exclusion from their own works, and their invariably fictional worldview; a worldview that is seemingly transparent yet inexcusably chimerical. And so, we are lead to the question whether "direct" cinema is not, in fact, the most "indirect" and fictional of all documentary forms of representation? After all, are not its story-telling structures as fictional, if not more, than any other form of filmmaking? 8 Dan Geva on The Nature of the Documentary Act In another slice of the spectrum, and utterly under British (Griersonian) influence, Tamar Yarom in TO SEE IF I'M SMILING (2007) and Ido Sela in his courageous EDUYOT (TESTIMONIES) (1993), base their films almost entirely on frontal statements, under the classic documentary headers of "document" and "testimony," and, as such, position their films as knowledgeable, valid and true by virtue of their form, before we even had a chance to look into their specific content and debate their authenticity and/or credibility. In yet another slice, filmmakers like Nissim Mossek in HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE BLACK PANTHERS (2002) or David Ofek in NO. 17 (2003), chose Cinéma Vérité as their method of choice for awakening the dead. The first does it through the complexities of national tensions, the second through detective mystery as metaphor for the impotence of a traumatic, rigid Israeli establishment. In these films, Vérité functions as a cinematic way of telling a story which is not necessarily personal but need be frank, stimulating, arousing, catalyzing and taunt the world it scrutinizes. French Cinema Vérité is premised on the idea of the world as laboratory, where the active position of the researcher with regard to the subject is no less important than the subject him/herself. In this method of filmmaking, the documentarian creates a world wherein the subject is both researcher and guinea pig, and the reactions taking place in front of the camera are the outcome of the documentarian’s screen presence, filmic work and cinematic epistemology. In yet another domain, similarly influenced by the winning yet schizophrenic Griersonian slogan of "dramatic treatment of reality," Raanan Alexandrowicz, in THE INNER TOUR (2001), devises a pure architecture of well organized mise en scéne cinema in a living and enlivened process carried out before the camera; a process wherein, in this particular case, Palestinians visit Israel as tourists and encounter, for the first time since 1948, what has become of Palestine; a technique that would have undoubtedly prompted Plato to drive Alexandrowicz out of town, for his ideologically constructed blurring of actual factual material and its fictional re-presentation. Looking into yet another sphere of documentary style and genre, we find epic projects such as Belfilms' SLAVES OF THE SWORD (2003), a historical biographical series that utilizes Griersonian conventions and classic documentary values in order to subvert the grand narratives of the military establishment, which official archives, historians and their state-sanctioned historiographies have sought to perpetuate as the one and only (legitimate) storyline. 9 Dan Geva on The Nature of the Documentary Act We've mentioned only a handful of films, a short, somewhat symbolic list, definitely far from comprehensive. Nonetheless, suffice it to take us up to a bird's eye view from which we might make a faithful diagnosis: Israeli filmmaking manages to make skillful, conscious, experienced and professional use of all valid methods and genres known in mainstream documentary discourse. The question now is, what can we learn from this picture? One, out of many possible answers, lies in another discipline. In 1925, Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset wrote his renowned book THE DEHUMANIZATION OF ART. He was unable to remain indifferent to Kafka's existential estrangement, the a-tonal music of Schoenberg, Richter and Strawinski, Cubist painting, th Expressionism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and the dramatic changes that took place in 20 century poetry and theatre. Coining the concept "the dehumanization of art" expresses, first, his assertion of a known historical th fact: Humanism, as we have known it from the 16 century to the naturalism and realism of the 19th century, posits that the human being is the singular and unified center around which any artistic work revolves. Y Gasset, among others, felt that the notion of man-as-natural-and-realist-center-of-the-universe had exhausted th the gamut of philosophical and stylistic possibilities, to the point that 20 century artists (and audiences) had to seek new modes of expression altogether. According to Y Gasset, this inevitably led to “dehumanization” in art and art forms, i.e. the invalidation of the individual as a universal center with a coherent, continuous and uniform insight. It may be easier to grasp his point with the help of a popular image of dehumanization, that of Charlie Chaplin in MODERN TIMES (1936). Let it be clear that by dehumanization, Y Gasset was not referring to monstrosity in the moral or political sense: a human being devoid of humanity and compassion (as the 20th century so ironically proved with its unprecedented cruelty and brutality), but merely a fundamental change in the perception of the human being as a transparent subjective center of artistic conviction and convention. Following Y Gasset, we may ask: does documentary filmmaking in general, and Israeli documentary in particular, really revolve, as it claims to, around the human being, framed and fostered in much the same way as the great humanists Dante, Erasmus, Rabelais, Balzac, Tolstoy, Franklin, Lessing or Roman Rolland, did? Can we apply Goethe's cry: "Humanism is our eternal goal" to our times and art? Assuming we convince ourselves that we can, we still have to ask what kind of a human subject the documentary constructs. Is documentary filmmaking capable of avoiding the self-imposed distance and detachment that the camera calls for? Can a personal voice really cure the documentary of inherent estrangement, or merely provide it with an illusive band-aid and a deceitful sense of healing? 10 Dan Geva on The Nature of the Documentary Act Do narcissistic films (in the deepest and most fascinating and exciting Freudian sense) such as Avi Mograbi's, which exaggerate and distort the self-filmed image, and engage in obsessive, neurotic reflexive linguistic expression as an indicator of the inner-world of his directorial persona, have what it takes to tone down y Gasset's notion? I don't know why Y Gasset, the great humanist, used the term “dehumanization,” a word with such frightening connotations given all that transpired throughout the 20th century. Indeed, we should be frightened by this word. Perhaps, in 1925, he could still say things with purely esthetic connotations, but not really. Owing to his deep comprehension of the crucial role art plays in shaping human consciousness, it seems that he wished to warn us with his words, as early as the first quarter of the 20th century, that we need beware, or at least be aware, of the destructive role art can play in this day and age. Maybe he realized that the changes undergoing art, were merely an indication of much bigger and more terrifying changes to come. Maybe he prophesied the catastrophic dehumanization of the real that would commence 14 years later, when WWII broke out, in the greatest systematic effort ever to annihilate and eradicate the “Other,” and by no less than by a man who claimed to be an art-lover and a leader of a people whom he regarded as the greatest work-of-art in history. However, the real question y Gasset's dehumanization raises, as far as Israeli documentary filmmaking is concerned, is purely instrumental: What lenses do we choose to film Palestinians with? What compositions do we choose for Holocaust survivors to pose in? At what distance do we capture foreign workers? Which dramatic structure do we impose on ultra-Orthodox kids or domestically abused women? To what extent are our characters subjected to temporalities that foster alienation and detachment? What weight, depth and complexity do we give to their psyches, and how much are they just a “function” of a pre-determined series of actions and reactions? There are many other rhetoric and esthetic parameters to put to the test, though it is not my intention to claim or even insinuate that directing, filming and editing are, a-priori, dehumanizing. Still, we can not ignore the fact that the actual process of dehumanization, or the propensity to dehumanize, begins with the very act of distancing and distinguishing that pointing a camera at ourselves, or any human being, entails. Distancing and distinguishing that stem from the very definition of the inherent distance of the documentary act from the natural order of real life, unmediated by a camera. 11 Dan Geva on The Nature of the Documentary Act This tension (between the naturally spontaneous and the film's textual framework) lies in the essence of the documentary act and in the nature of the art of documentation. It's an intrinsic conflict. Can it be resolved or at least relieved? In philosophical terms, it's undoubtedly an interesting question, but on the practical level, we must wonder whether we can imagine the Y Gassetic assertion contributing to our works of art, as we stand facing the world armed with our cameras? Might it change the way we tackle the eternal conflict between the esthetic frame and the initial mimetic nature of the human being as such? Can the documentary act really avoid dehumanization? Whether it can or cannot, it is the responsibility of the Israeli documentarian—the one opting to deal with the human condition, i.e. as occupier or occupied, as exploiter or exploited, as estranged, abused or traumatized—to address this concern themselves and with their subjects upon placing a camera in front of him/her/them-selves. This very question might shed yet more light on the phenomenal success of Ari Folman's WALTZ WITH BASHIR (2008). Could it be that the animation itself, which distances representation from reality, dehumanizes by the very nature of the medium, drastically calling attention to framed esthetics and promoting its function as a non-living form, is what precludes this issue altogether; a preclusion successful only by virtue of the fact that it stretches the thesis to the limits of its own validity? Once WALTZ WITH BASHIR marked the erosion of the realistic and naturalizing documentary image in the mimetic sense, presenting such an effective metaphor for the real dehumanization of the posttraumatic, detached and split human subject—rational, realistic documentation as we know it must take a new and different look at the documentary act and the images it produces. What is this new and different look is, has yet to be determined. The upset is still far too fresh and as such will take time to unfold. Perhaps it calls for a violent revolution. One thing is self-evident, emerging as a living message from wALTZ WITH BASHIR: we must never stop creating and inventing. If there is a concealed humanistic message in Y Gasset's prophecy, it is that hope for a renewed humanism—re-humanism—lies in the absolute commitment to an ongoing quest for new ways to express and imagine images of human beings, and whenever we decide to capture someone on tape and transform him/her into an image, we must check and re-check ourselves as to whether or not we are imaging him/her from the most human of angles, and whether the angle we have chosen intensifies or reduces, on our own scale, the potential dehumanization of the very act of documentary. "A work of art lives on its form, not on its material. The essential grace it emenates springs from its structure, from its organism". In 1939 his dancing saved is life. Today, he is 88 and lives in a retirement home. For Avigdor, dancing isn't a hobby and isn't therapy, it's the only way to survive. Tel: 972-2-6277366 Fax: 972-2-6277331 E-mail: [email protected] 142
