Unwrapping
God’s Gifts
Do you ever look at someone and wonder, "What is going on inside their
head?" Well, I know. Okay, I know Riley's head. The Elementary Youth Group
was able to listen to all of the emotions in Riley’s head when they watched
“Inside Out.” Read more on page 3.
Sunday January 17, will be a huge day at Good Shepherd. Turn to page 5 for
the details.
When you walked into the kitchen on Sunday night you were sure to find
flour on the floor, sprinkles all over the counter, and of course green and red
frosting everywhere. Find out what the High School youth group did
continuing on page 3.
Our God is a giving God. Our services continue a celebration of God’s
generosity to us. Turn to page 5 to learn more about worship themes at the
start of this new year.

We are accepting registrations for the
2016-2017 school year. I will be at a table

Maggie Bruns, Director/Teacher
Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe
our school year is half over already!
We started out December by making
little preschool elves, angels, light
bulbs, and Christmas trees. We had an
advent calendar in our classroom that
helped us to understand the story of
Jesus' birth along with books, songs,
and a Nativity scene. After spending a
few weeks practicing our Christmas
songs we had a concert for our friends
and family. The children did an
amazing job and everyone seemed to
have a great time. We had a visit from
Santa Claus where the children
received a special present. They were
very excited!
5:30-6pm. This is open to anyone interested
in having their child attend Little Lambs. If
you have any questions please call the
preschool at 229-3883 or email
[email protected].

Elementary Youth Group
Sixteen members of the Elementary Youth Group met on Friday, November 20th and watched the movie, “Inside
Out.” The movie talks about the different emotions and memories that ten-year old Riley had when she moved
to a new city. After the movie, the group discussed some of their memories with each other.
What’s next? The Elementary Youth Group will be combining with the Middle School Youth Group on Friday,
January 29th to go bowling. Look for more details in the near future!
High School Youth Group
The High School Youth group with the help of Stephanie Mattson gathered together to make Christmas cookies for
the people of the New Beginning Center here in Aberdeen. It was a great night full of Christmas music, laughter, fun
and some really awesome cookies. They wanted to share the hope and joy of Christmas with others. What’s next?
Take a look at our schedule for activities in January. Notice that there is a time change coming in the new year. Youth
Group will begin at 7:00pm and end at 9:00pm, snacks will be provided.
Here is our January schedule:
January 3rd-No Youth Group New Year’s Weekend (See article on Make A Difference Day!)
January 10th-Game night
January 17th-Faith Talk Night
January 24th-Movie Night (movie to be determined)
January 31st-Service Night (There will be different service projects to do together)
Make a Difference Day
High School students Make A Difference
Day is back! After a year off we are back to
Make a Difference in Aberdeen! This is a
day of service for High School Students. It
will be on Tuesday January 5th which is the
last day of Winter break. We will be joining
together with area churches for an
afternoon of service projects in Aberdeen. You also get a free
t-shirt and a free ticket to the concert with Rachel Kurtz and
Agape (yes the ones from the National Youth Gathering!) The
day begins at 2:00pm here at Good Shepherd and the concert
begins at 6:00pm at Bethlehem. To sign up, please talk to
Pastor Liz or a member of the Youth Team!
Activity Cancellations due to Severe Weather
will be announced on Hub City Radio stations
(FM: 94.1, 97.7, 103.7, 106.7; AM: 930,
1420) and Dakota Broadcasting stations
(FM: 105.5 and 107.7), as well as the
KELOLAND.com Closeline.
Please listen to any of these radio stations or
check online if you have questions about any
church activities being held. If the Aberdeen
Schools call off school or let out early on a
Wednesday, that would also mean there
would be NO Wednesday activities at the
church in the afternoon or evening and the
church office is closed.

Annual Meeting
January 17, 2016
How big will January 17th be? We will have two celebrative worship services as we welcome new members and
renew our faith commitments to God, one another and to the world beyond our walls. Between the services we will
have a coffee bar and activity to get to know one another. The coffee will come from Caribou and we will have syrups
and the fixings to make your great coffee drinks. The fun continues with our traditional spud feed, baked potatoes with
all of the fixings and more coffee! All that coffee will keep you awake and alert for our annual meeting. The agenda will
include:



Vote on the budget for 2016.
Election of officers and boards.
Discussion and possible action on the use of our $30,000 CD from the sale of land south of the church in the
1990s.
To get ready for the annual meeting, we will have an annual meeting forum between services on January 10. At this
meeting you will receive the proposed budget for 2016 and we will go over the issues that will be addressed at the
meeting. Learn how new opportunities are developing with Thrivent for funding of many of our caring and relational
activities.
Board Retreat
Worship Themes
The Good Shepherd Board Retreat will be Sunday,
January 30, with a meal starting at 12:00 noon. What will
we be doing? After a sub sandwich lunch at noon we will
meet in individual boards. Special presentations are
being planned, including Thrivent. We will map out the
mission of Good Shepherd in 2016 with each board
determining their goals and action projects. We will do
the nuts and bolts work of setting up meeting times and
we establish the times for our monthly meetings. This
meeting will end by or before 3pm.
Don’t miss this opportunity to come to know God in
new and loving ways. Everyday our lives are
enriched by the gifts of God and we are
strengthened to live in new ways through the
promises that we receive from God. We wake up
and thrill to a sunrise. We can feel our hearts
expand standing under a vast blue sky. We can feel
our smallness under the wonder of a night sky filled
with countless stars. Everyone at times feels the
gifts of God through creation. God’s gifts are even
more than that. We proclaim to the world God’s
promises for us in life. Lives lived in faith are new
lives. We will unwrap these gifts in our worship
services in January through the first part of
February. Here is what’s coming:

Amanda Black with Pastor Liz in the development of Spark Rotation. This faith formation program has
benefited our children and also brought volunteers into our educational program and built relationships.
Amanda has been the cornerstone of our work to start up an elementary youth group to bring children and
families together.
Rachel Hemke has provided inspiration through music provided by choirs and people sharing special music.
Maggie Bruns provides a loving, learning environment for preschool children in our church and community.
Todd Black provides hospitality through his stewardship of the building and compassionately guides people
coming to us doing community service.
Pastor Liz has developed quality relationships with people of all ages and has been at the center of
establishing youth groups.
Pastor Liz has been increasingly visible in providing contemporary music to our congregation.
Amanda Black has brought a new church directory to fulfillment which will be in our hands in April.
Curt Eisenbeisz has not only provided leadership for the contemporary music band but has helped us over
come our problems with our new soundboard.
Barb Daberkow is often the first face people see when they enter the church and she welcomes each new
person with warmth and enthusiasm.
Charlotte Kramer has been a sparkplug to keep people connected and involved in the church.
Our organists and pianists enrich the worship experience that we have through participating in music.
Pastor Tim and Pastor Liz together have mapped out plans to make 2016 unforgettable in worship
experience through the planning of worship themes for the congregation.
Pastor Tim continues to be excited about his work with the confirmation program, adult education, and
small groups. Good shepherd is about relationships, relationships with God and with one another.

Time and Talent Sign Up
Christmas has passed and our gifts have been
opened. The Nominations Board would like to share
with you an idea as to how YOU can give God a very
special gift. That special gift is sharing the gift that
He gave you—your talent and time to help others
and become a vital role in the mission of Good
Shepherd.
On Jan. 17th & 24th, we will be distributing Time and
Talent handouts, and we ask that you prayerfully
consider a new adventure and take this opportunity
to meet the wonderful members of our congregation
as you work side-by-side.
Thank you for your continuous support.
Nominations Board
Newlywed Game
Last February five couples took
part in the Good Shepherd version
of the Newlywed Game! Unlike
the popular television game show,
our couples handled their differences in answers very
graciously.
What’s next? Mark your calendar for Friday, February
12th at 7pm for the 2nd Annual Newlywed Game! Watch
for signs and bulletin announcements for ticket
information coming soon!
MISSION OF THE MONTH
The Mission of the Month offering is received on the 2nd
and 4th Sunday and Wednesday with our “Noisy Offering”
by passing the bread pans.
In December, $310.33 was donated to Safe Harbor.
