Bílá labuť department store l presented by Transakta and Naxos
presented by TRANSAKTA
There were once two malting houses with large gardens on the current site of the White
Swan department store. These buildings were collectively known as „U bílé labutě“ (literally: At the White Swan). In the 1930’s, Jaroslav Brouk, a businessman and co-owner of the
Brouk and Babka department store purchased the site. Just before the Second World War,
he had the old buildings demolished and built the present department store. This funcionalist building was designed by the renowned architects, Josef Kitrich and Josef Hrubý.
The store´s name, the White Swan, was inspired by the history of the site.
Internal communications consisted of two xed stairwells and ve large express passenger
lifts. The escalator from the ground to the rst oor was the rst such moving staircase in
Prague and caused something of a sensation.
The front façade of the building consisted of a glass panel measuring 30 x 18 meters. This
was glazed with opaque silver-gray insulating glass which consisted of a glass-wool lling
sandwiched between two clear panes of glass.
The ceremonial opening of the building took place on 19 March 1939. Since then a number of changes have been made to the building. Under the former political regime the
building continued to serve as a department store. As a result, we were able to welcome
the store’s 400 millionth visitor soon after the Velvet Revolution on 15 August 1990. The
department store has been registered on the UNESCO Heritage Buildings list since 1994.
Since 1992 the White Swan has been owned by Transakta a.s. Transakta has made a number of signi cant improvements to the building, including the addition of a mezzanine
to the rear part of the Ground Floor. Transakta is a joint stock company, which as well as
operating and managing shopping centres, also owns and operates a number of hotels in
central Prague.
Bílá labuť department store l History
Transakta currently intends to enhance
the current White Swan department
store concept, with a particular focus on
the structure of the store and on services.
These changes will be consistent with
the building’s prime location on Na Poříčí
Street. The White Swan is right at the heart
of this thriving boulevard - which is undergoing very significant redevelopment.
The entire area is becoming increasingly
business-focused due to the construction
of new off ice space for international companies (banks, insurance companies and
auditors). There are also numerous hotels
and shops in the vicinity.
As a result of these changes, which we have
been able to confirm with market research,
Transakta is intent on positioning the White
Swan as a new flagship store in the heart
of Europe. The White Swan’s unique combination of architecture, atmosphere and
high-quality renovated retail space creates
an environment that is attractive to leading
brands. The White Swan looks forward to
discussing tailor-made retail space reconstruction and modification with prospective tenants.
Bílá labuť department store l History
1939
The White Swan department store is a Prague icon. It is also one of central Prague´s most popular retail destinations with
more than 400 million shoppers having passed through its doors since it opened in 1939.
The building was designed by world-famous architects Hruby and Kittrich, who also designed the Czech Pavilion at EXPO 56
in Brussels. Since 1994 the building has been listed on UNESCO´s heritage list.
The renovated historic architecture of the White Swan department store creates unique business and o ce spaces. These
premises are ideal for those seeking to enter or to expand their presence in the Central European retail market.
White Swan department stores, a division of Transakta a.s., is proud to o er you an opportunity to link the story of your brand
with facilities and reputation that have no equal in Central Europe.
Bílá labuť department store l History
The Czech Republic is in the heart of Europe.
Prague, the capital city, has an extensive transport
infrastructure including an international airport
and motorway connections to Germany and to
other neighbouring states.

Zone I
Key drivers of the Prague economy are tourism,
conferences, and the presence of many multi
national companies. For these companies the Czech
Republic is, because of its geographic location, a
hub for Central European trade, logistics and support.
The White Swan department store is on Na Poříčí
Street. This street carries high volumes of pedestrian
traffic because it links the central city’s
pedestrian zones with:
• Prague’s main and regional railway stations,
• the central international bus station and
• three important Metro (underground) stations.
There is also a tram stop immediately in front of
the White Swan which bears the department
store’s name.
