Beachwood is now one of only three school districts in Ohio with a Aa1 rating (the others are Shaker Heights and Dublin) and one of approximately 40 Aa1-rated school districts nationwide. “Three criteria were used in the evalua- tion of our District for this rating upgrade – prudent management, sound finances and our extremely supportive community’s voting record,” said Beachwood Schools Treasurer Michele Mills. “With the size of our tax base, Beachwood is among the smallest school districts in the country to receive such a high continued on page 21 Bison Spring Sports Earn Three Conference Championships Inside Perspective . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2 Treasurer’s Column . . . . . . .3 AP Stats Awards . . . . . . . . . .4 Class of 2007 . . . . . . . . . . . . .7 Scrapbook . . . . . . . . . . . . . .16 “Spinneys” . . . . . . . . . . . . . .23 Special SENIOR EDITION Bison spring sports teams celebrated an amazing 2007 season, with three Chagrin Valley Conference (CVC) championships and hurdler Ava Haynes (right) winning third in the state. More than 1,000 posters created by students throughout the country were submitted in the 18th annual Association competition. The purpose of the competition is to promote quantitative literacy, according to Mr. Kaminski. “Students pose a question of their own choosing, collect data, and then answer the question using graphs,” he explained. Scott and the Bee One Speller’s Account of the 2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee By Scott Remer Beachwood Middle School seventh grader Scott Remer was the 2007 Cuyahoga County Scripps Spelling Bee champion and on May 30-31, competed in the national Bee in Washington, D.C. Here is Scott’s inside story of the national competition. Photo by Erica Remer Round 1 - We went down three escalators, past the signs all proudly proclaiming “Scripps National Spelling Bee” and arrived in the inner bowels of the hotel. I entered the Constitution Ballroom, tension building as I gazed at the nervous faces of my fellow spellers. We listened to the voice of Jacques Bailly, the pronouncer, on a tape as he told us the language of origin, the definition, the part of speech and alternate pronunciations and we colored in the circles of a Scantron sheet with 25 really tough words. After that, crew members distributed the correct answers on a sheet of paper, and I compared mine and gave myself my score. I got a 20 out of 25. Round 2 – I waited my turn to spell the single word that would determine whether an additional three points would be added to my score. The word was ‘salary,’ a word that was surprisingly easy. I was happy I would get a 23 out of 28. The Announcement of the Quarterfinalists – The director of the Bee, Paige Kimble, announced the quarterfinalists in a random order by our numbers. It was very anxiety producing, even though I knew I had made the cutoff of 21. I strained my ears to hear “194,” and I finally heard it halfway through (107/286 left). Quarterfinals (Round 3): I waited patiently for my word, heart pounding. I finally stepped to the microphone and heard Dr. Bailly, the pronouncer, say ‘pertinacious.’ My mother and I had done that word, thank goodness. It meant ‘stubborn.’ I successfully spelled ‘pertinacious,’ and advanced to Round 4 (94 spellers left). Quarterfinals (Round 4): I got a word that I’d never heard of before: flebile, pronounced flee-bill or fleh-buhl. Dr. Bailly provided me with the language of origin (Latin), and I knew that the ‘f’ sound at the beginning was spelled with an ‘f’ and not a ‘ph.’ I knew that most words ending with ‘ile’ could be pronounced with ‘uhl’ at the end, so I guessed and found that I was correct! (and then there were 59) Semifinals (Round 5): I woke up excited and nervous and proceeded on stage at around 9:45 a.m. At 10 a.m., the ESPN broadcast was underway. An hour and a half later, it was my turn to spell. Cameras flashed, the clicks reminding me of rapid gunfire. The ESPN cameras were fixed on me, and the bright lights were oppressive. The word was ‘stramineous,’ or straw-colored. I completely blanked out, however, and I misspelled the word. I then was led backstage to the Comfort Room, where I met my parents. After awhile, I was ready to face the media. I walked out and was pleasantly surprised that I was only interviewed by one reporter from the Northeast Ohio area. Post- After Round 5, there were 33 left. After Round 6, 15 spellers advanced and, after I got over my initial disappointment, I was glad I attended the finals that evening to cheer on several of my compatriots. The next day, joined by Jake Fumic from Avon and his family, our family toured the Capitol courtesy of Congresswoman Tubbs Jones. Finally, Friday night was the awards banquet, where they made all the spellers feel like champions while filming a segment for the Food Network. And there was a party just for us with a D.J. There were many things that I learned from this experience. I was amazed by how professional and yet lighthearted the Bee was and how nervous spellers trying to spell words they’d never heard of could crack jokes about them. I learned about the difference between a regional competition and the national level, and I learned the importance of winning and losing with grace. I learned the art of spin (I tied for 34th place!). I learned from this experience that you can’t always win, even if you practice hard, but if you keep trying and learn from your mistakes, almost anything is possible! I sincerely hope next year I can try again and do even better! I was amazed by how professional and yet lighthearted the Bee was and how nervous spellers trying to spell words they’d never heard of could crack jokes about them. I learned the art of spin (I tied for 34th place!). 5 Beachwood Middle School Team Wins State Championship in Academic Competition A team of Beachwood Middle School seventh and eighth graders won first place in the State of Ohio in the Knowledge Master Open (KMO) Spring 2007 academic competition. KMO is a computer-based competition that allows students to compete in a widespread curriculum-based contest without leaving their classrooms. A FON, he called it. Multiply it by any number, nothing happens, divide any number by it and nothing happens. One is a prime, a perfect square, and the smallest positive odd number. One, as a number, is seemingly insignificant. Seven years later, I still don’t understand math, but I have come to realize that one, as a concept, is one of the most powerful concepts in the world. The power of one starts with one feeling, then it is added to one thought, which is then added to one action, and soon, it is added to one movement, and that movement can change the world….The power of one starts with each one of us. We all have the power to feel, to think, and to influence. We must combine this power, and add to each others’, until one by one, we become the most powerful generation history has ever known; the generation to change the course of the world.” Hersh Varma Masha Khusid Outstanding Service to The Beachcomber Madelyne Dreyfuss • Justin Sperling • Hersh Varma Student Council Spirit Award Jacquelyn Gary • Ava Haynes • Peter Martin • Aleaha Thrower • Jennifer Warren Ohio Music Educators Association Gospel Choir Lindsey Smith Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award Julian Abramof Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Being there again gave me a sense of reference, a feeling of actually being attached to my own past… As we graduate today we move on to new playgrounds. From the highway, they may seem to be new and flashy. But up close, they can be cold and overwhelming places. So, without a solid sense of reference, and a strong sense of self, you could easily get lost in the tumult. Luckily for us, we have a solid reference point…We will remember Beachwood, our old comfortable playground. And that’s a good thing. Feel attached to your past, it will give you the strength you need to stay rooted while facing the maelstrom of uncertainty that the future brings. And for the present, continue to make life your playground. Run around, fall in the wood chips, don’t be afraid of getting bruised up a bit, but most importantly, connect. The school will also maintain a list of those employees who may have access to records. The school district or other educational agency will inform the parents when personally identifiable information collected, maintained, or used is no longer needed to provide educational services to the child. All personally identifiable data will be kept for at least five years or longer if required for audit purposes or otherwise required by law. Parents and students have rights in this process. Parents have the right to: • Review their child’s records; • Refuse permission to release information (except as required by or permitted by law to be released); and • Request that information they believe to be inaccurate, misleading or in violation of their child’s privacy or other rights be changed. The district has a process to resolve disagreements about information collected. The school district has appointed Lauren Broderick to make sure that information about students is kept confidential. Ms. Broderick may be contacted at the Beachwood City School District Central Office, 24601 Fairmount Blvd., 216/464-2600, ext. 234. The school district's policies and procedures for special education are available from the office of the superintendent, Richard A. Markwardt, Ph.D. The school district operates a Child Information Management System that assures a practical method of identifying which children are currently receiving special education services and which children are not. Certain data regarding children are maintained within this system. School districts are interested in meeting the needs of children with disabilities. If you have or know of a child who may have a disability, contact the Beachwood School District for more information and help. School districts across the state of Ohio are participating in an effort to identify, locate, and evaluate all children from birth through 21 years of age who may have disabilities. Disability, in this instance, means such conditions as hearing impairments, visual impairments, speech or language impairments, specific learning disabilities, emotionally disturbed, multiple disabilities, mental retardation, other health impairments, physical impairments, autism, and traumatic brain injury. Public schools have responded vigorously to federal and state mandates requiring the provision of a free appropriate public education regardless of a child's disability. But before school districts can serve children, they must be found. Many children with disabilities are not visible because they do not function in the mainstream of the community, such as children who are homeless and children of migrant families. Also, many unidentified children with disabilities are preschoolers. Parents may not be aware their child has a disability or that there are programs and services available. The school district will ask for information about the child, asking such questions as: What is the problem? What has already been done about the problem? What background information is available? This information may be collected in several ways including interviews, observations, screening and testing. This information may be obtained from parents and the student or from other agencies that have information about the student. This information will be used to decide whether the child has a disability and needs special services. All information collected will be held in strict confidence and released to others only with parent permission or as allowed by law. For example, the school district will send records on request to a school district or other educational agency in which a student intends to enroll. The parents may have a copy of those records upon request. The school district will keep a record of all persons who review confidential records with the exception of authorized school employees 20 “Art from the Heart” Showcases Fine Arts Sevy Harris plays the violin as she greets Arts Festival patrons. Moody’s Investors Service Upgrades Beachwood Schools’ Rating budgetary pressures, along with timely voter support for revenue enhancement, are crucial to the district maintaining the high quality Aa1 rating,” the agency reported. Moody’s also said it believes “the district’s sizable $2.2 billion tax base will continue to experience growth due to its favorable proximity to Cleveland and the presence of available land for future development.” The report continued, “The district’s tax base is approximately 53% commercial, providing diversity to the high-quality residential developments within the district.” Moody’s Investors Service is among the world’s most respected and widely utilized sources for credit ratings, research and risk analysis. The agency provides research data and analytic tools for assessing credit risk and publishes marketleading credit opinions, deal research and commentary, serving more than 9,300 customer accounts at some 2,400 institutions around the globe. continued from page 1 credit rating,” Ms. Mills continued. “According to Moody’s, the median full value of property for a Aa-1-rated school district is $7 billion. Our full market value is $2 billion. “We are very pleased with this independent outside confirmation of our financial operations,” she said. “The upgraded rating reflects the district’s wealthy suburban Cleveland tax base, sound finances supported by an excellent voter history, and modest debt burden with no future borrowing expected,” said Moody’s in its report. The agency said it expects the district’s sound financial operations will continue given the recently approved (2005) operating levy, an excellent voter history and a conservative financial forecast. “Moody’s believes continued prudent financial management allowing for a cushion against unforeseen 21 PTO Garage Sale Raises $18,000 for Schools Proceeds Will Fund Jump Start Program Generous proceeds from the 2007 Community PTO Garage Sale will enable the District to launch the physical education program Jump Start. Jump Start will allow the District’s PE teachers to assess each student’s overall fitness level and develop an individualized fitness plan, explained Bryden PE teacher Kim Nowak. “The program will allow us to record data for each child and then send it home to parents,” she said. “We will be able to develop fitness portfolios for students that will accompany them from kindergarten through grade 12.” PTO’s generous donation will provide funds for teacher training, heart rate monitors and computer equipment. Using the equipment, teachers will provide individual assessments on Body Mass Index, blood pressure, cardiovascular fitness, grip and much more, said Mrs. Nowak. “We will be able to design and print for parents target body composition and caloric intake goals, recommended fitness and weight training programs, sportspecific activities and personal optimal fitness programs based on individual needs.” The program is not just limited to students, she continued. “We hope to utilize the program to provide individual assessments for staff, family and community members as well. “This program has so much to offer our District in terms of our Wellness Program. It will help improve the fitness levels and overall wellness of our students, advise them on healthy nutrition choices and provide education to help them make wise decisions throughout their lives.” Many thanks to Community PTO for its ongoing support of valuable enrichment programs for our students. High School Student Engineers Learn Physics Through New Robotics Course Students in the new Honors Physics-Robotics class at Beachwood High School are learning the principles of physics by engineering and building their own robots. The pre-engineering curriculum combines traditional classroom instruction with a hands-on, problem-solving approach using robotic science, explained teacher Norm Althausen while he helped junior Bobby Weitzner (above) test the capacitor voltage of his robot. “The course presents the fundamentals of electronics, computer programming and control systems,” he said. “Students then use what they have learned to build, program and control robots to engage a number of challenges. “The course is designed for students who enjoy a hands-on and practical approach to science and are considering a major in computers, engineering, or mechatronics in college.” Juniors Katherine Bruening and Arielle Mueller (top right) designed a robot with “whiskers” that sense barriers. “When the whiskers on the robot hit an object, they sense where the barrier is and can navigate away from it,” the girls explained. “The whiskers can sense if they are being hit from left, right or straight on. The robot is thus able to find its way out of corners and away from other objects.” “My robot is programmed to be sensitive to light using photoresistors,” said junior Danielle Weiss (bottom right). “The program that I used causes the robot to move toward shadows. When both photoresistors are in shadow, the robot moves forward, and when only one resistor is in shadow, the robot pivots toward the shadow.” 22 235 Beachwood Students Honored With “Spinney” Awards for Excellence The proud Beachwood “Spinneys” tradition continued with the 2007 presentation of Beachwood Board of Education Awards for Educational Excellence to 235 Beachwood students. Mrs. Katz teaches AP Calculus and Honors Pre-Calculus and also serves as the Math Department Subject Coordinator for Grades 7 through 12 and the advisor to National Honor Society. She is the Beachwood representative for PROM/SE project (Promoting Rigorous Outcomes in Math and Science Education) and an active participant in the SMART (Science and Math Achievement Required for Tomorrow) consortium. She is also a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar, a member of the Ohio Mathematics Education Leadership Council, and a member of the Ohio Graduation Test Content Advisory Committee. All of her AP Calculus students earned the highest grade of 5 on the 2006 AP test, resulting in this statement from College Board: “According to College Board’s Advanced Placement Report to the Nation, Beachwood High School has one of the strongest AP programs in Ohio in AP Calculus AB.” Mr. Deegan, who teaches Social Studies at Beachwood High School, was nominated by senior Juanita Padilla for the Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club Teacher of the Year Award. Juanita wrote, “Mr. Deegan is an inspiring teacher who shows us how we can be our best and become good citizens of the world. He inspires us to better ourselves, volunteer and study. He helps us understand and presents us with opportunities to succeed.” Mr. Deegan is on the Teacher Leadership Team of the national non-profit organization Facing History and Ourselves. He is chair of the District’s Differential Achievement Committee and has served as chair of the Social Studies Department and as a Beachwood teacher mentor. In 2005-06, Mr. Deegan spent a year in Hungary as a Fulbright Exchange teacher. Mr. Deegan received a $1,000 check for the BHS Social Studies Department. He plans to apply a portion of the funds toward Amnesty International, for which he serves as student advisor.
