Contemporary visual culture is at the juncture
between today’s aesthetic, social and political
issues and challenges linked to the continuing
development of production and dissemination
technologies. Les Rencontres Internationales
proposes exploring these evolving practices.
Auditorium: most of the works presented are
German premières, notably by La Ribot, Adel
Abidin, Sarah Vanagt, Filipa César, Didier Faustino,
Clément Cogitore, Laure Prouvost, Maya Schweizer,
Su-Mei Tse, Johan Grimonprez and Hans Op de
Beeck, amongst others; the manifesto film “88:88”
by Isiah Medina will be screened on 16th March, as
well as “Spectrographies” by Dorothée Smith, with
the directors present; the film/event “Meurtrière”
by Philippe Grandrieux will be screened on 17th
March, as well as “Borobudur” in the presence of
the director Arnold Pasquier; throughout the week
there will be themed sessions with artists from all
over the world to discuss and share their work. The
weekend provides an opportunity to discover a
packed programme at the two screens in the Haus
der Kulturen der Welt, with notably the première
of the hypnotic film by Mauro Herce, “Dead Slow
Ahead” on Saturday 19th March. On the last day
of the event, Sunday 20th March, we are notably
showing Lamia Joreige’s film in her presence, “And
the Living is Easy”, Pedro Costa has been given
carte blanche, and for the closing session, Thom
Andersen’s latest film, ‘‘The Thoughts That Once
We Had’’, inspired by Gilles Deleuze’s film theory.
For six days, from 15th to 20th March, Les
Rencontres Internationales will provide a forum for
discovery and thinking devoted to contemporary
practices regarding moving image.
Between new cinema and contemporary art, this
unique platform in Europe provides rare insight to
contemporary audiovisual practices. Documentary
approaches, experimental fiction, video and
hybrid forms: the programme of Les Rencontres
Internationales is the result of thorough research
and invitations to striking artists from cinema and
contemporary art.
One of the main objectives of Les Rencontres
Internationales is to provoke thought about
contemporary international creation in terms of
moving image, examining and sharing creations
that question images and our period with a wide
audience. Les Rencontres Internationales offer a
rare programme intended to be shared as widely
as possible. In the company of artists and directors
from all over the world, we will present 120 works
from 40 countries, produced by artists who are
renowned on the international scene alongside
young artists and directors experiencing their first
presentation.
Les Rencontres Internationales wishes to
summarise the special features and similarities
of artistic practices between new films and
contemporary art, and to delve into emerging
artistic forms and their criticism. The desire is to be
part of a review of our contemporary image culture,
through a demanding and inclusive programme.

This year, we are delighted to once again offer free
entry to the entire programme.
Following the opening evening, when we offer
the German première of a rare film/performance
‘‘Vapour’’ by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, with a
live performance by Michael Busch and after an
‘‘Alchemical’’ screening with six new films, many
highlights are in store this year in two screening
rooms at the HKW, the Theatersaal and the

“Vapour” takes place in Toongha in the region of
Mae Ram in Thailand, a village in which the director
has been living for a few years now. Clouds fall on
the village and swallow it for the day. They touch the
tiles, the beds, the chairs, the mats, the grass and the
people living there, contaminating everything with a
white vapour.

Maybe there is nothing more than a void; maybe the
fall is endless. Felipe Esparza explores and crosses
hallucinatory landscapes, inspired by Ayahuasca,
an Amazon tribal drink, enabling new states of
consciousness to be reached. In Brazil, João Vieira
Torres and Tanawi Xucuru Kariri film a ritual and
question what can be seen. Georgy Bagdasarov
and Alexandra Moralesova reveal a double alchemy
in the transformation of a plant used by Native
American tribes, and film processing and vision.
Sandro Aguilar films the unsettling and bizarre
encounter between two individuals.

In 2002 Andrew Lampert acquired a 16 mm black
and white film, in Spanish, called ‘El Adios Largos’,
that proved to be the only existing trace of the film
‘The Long Goodbye’, directed by Robert Altman in
1973. After ten years of restoration, the film has a
new lease of life with new colours. Eske Schlüters
plays with illusions, and produces a docufiction
about the incomplete production of a film by UFA
in the 40s. Blake Williams films machines and
landscapes in 3D where movement and immobility,
as well as red and blue colours collide. Les Leveque
recycles images from nine films inspired by Hamlet.
An algorithm separates the red, green and blue,
causing an unconscious disconnection mechanism
to occur.

Damir Ocko: TK | Exp. film | 4k | colour | 0:19:46 |

Volker Schreiner crosses three landscapes through
fragments of films. Sophie Roger observes and
draws the landscape seen through the slatted
boards in a loft, and pages torn from ‘A Lover’s
Discourse: Fragments’ by Roland Barthes. Thomas
Mohr pays tribute to artist Hanne Darboven’s
musical compositions, known for her monumental
installations, made up of thousands of drawings and
notes. An infinite visual and audible composition
appears through the breaks and duplications
between motifs. Damir Ocko constructs a complex
polyphonic work in which poetry meets sounds and
silences, a stifled word, bodies confronting and
requiring endurance.

Nova Paul examines an interior where light filters
through the space and time stands still. Juliane
Jaschnow and Stefanie Schroeder undertake a
journey in the industrial regions of former East
Germany. Factories are closing and well-being
centres are appearing, but the past is not far
below this new surface. Halida Boughriet films
young adolescents, confronting us with a collective
memory and a political memory that immobilise.
Julien Dubuisson conceives ‘Pavillon nocturne’ like
a small theatre inspired by Giacometti’s piece ‘The
Palace at 4 am’ (1932), in which the characters have
been been replaced by forms, creating a complex
and enclosed structure. In Kirkuk, Iraq, LouisCyprien Rials films flames emerging from the ground
of an oil field. Alex Monteith goes to Cascade Cove
in New Zealand, a bay close to the sites where the
first archaeological digs of New Zealand fjords were
carried out, looking for remains of the first colonists
and Maori culture. Salomé Lamas films a young
woman who attempts to blend in with a treetop, at
the point where the earth and sky meet.

SUPER-POSITIONS
/ SUPERPOSITIONEN
J Tobias Anderson presents three lively characters
discussing their innermost thoughts, pushing
communication to the point of absurdity. Scott
Fitzpatrick raises the question of ambition in life. A
cat responds. Naïmé Perrette blends the tale of a
family with images taken from the Internet, playing
on the discrepancy between the actual events
and their corresponding accounts. A grandfather
recounts his ancestors’ experiences, accompanied
by his wife commenting off camera. Alex Anikina
explores a land and its inherent language, from the
first maps of imaginary countries to contemporary
image databases. Matthias Fitz uses flows of
advertising images, stretching pixels and thus
creating an alternative system of interpretation.
Laure Prouvost creates a feeling of déjà vu, in
the face and possession of power, and summons
various interpretations of the same image. Isiah
Medina questions a generation’s concerns, and
films his friends from Winnipeg along with their
questions about philosophy, love and poverty. This
is an attempt to give meaning to chaos through
fleeting shots, superimpositions and voiceovers that
suddenly come to a halt.

Dorothée Smith: Spectrographies | Exp. fiction | 4k |

In an empty house Benjamin Ramírez Pérez produces
a spectral choreography of objects disappearing then
reappearing, operated by a technician who remains offcamera.
In ‘Spectrographies’ Dorothée Smith follows a troubled
man seeking what others aim to avoid, a ghost. He tries
to fill the emptiness left by the absence of a lost love.
The film transposes Derrida’s idea, according to which
cinema is the science of ghosts.

Cecilia Lundqvist
UNRESOLVED /
UNGELÖST
Cecilia Lundqvist describes the inability of humans to
capture the fleeting nature of things. Simon Gerbaud
gradually makes objects disappear, dematerialising
the existence of objects and our belief in them. Brit
Bunkley films whirlwinds in abandoned towns in the
Californian desert. John Skoog films farmer KarlGöran Persson’s house. At the beginning of the 40s,
the farmer started to fortify his small house, to provide
refuge to villagers in the event of a Soviet invasion.
Elske Rosenfeld comments on the recording of the
first Central Round Table that took place on 7th
December 1989 in East Germany, two months after
the first big demonstrations, while a demonstration
roars outside. Eléonore de Montesquiou’s film is a
portrait or monologue of Kyril Zinovieff who was 100
years old at the time. He shares his impressions of
Russia. Born in 1910 in Saint Petersburg and a child
during the Russian Revolution, his family escaped to
Estonia then settled in England, where he became an
intelligence officer and translator. Anthony Haughey
explores ideological and political narratives, and
proposes a reflection on the Srebrenica massacre of
1995 when the Army of the Serb Republic of Bosnia
killed over 8,000 men.

Nicolas Tubery contemplates the mechanisms of
video and the subject filmed in one and the same
act. An unusual filming device in a sheep pen
reveals a choreography of the effort and work.
Pat Collins and Sharon Whooley film a lighthouse
that becomes a metaphor for the filming process.
Sarah and Katrien Vanagt conduct a 17th-century
experiment enabling the device for ocular vision
to be observed. Jean-François Reverdy uses the
pinhole camera to reproduce the light of the desert
and film men who live there in a desert region of
Mauritania, the exploitation of iron quarries and the
transport of the mineral to the Ocean on board the
world’s longest train.

Arthur Fléchard sees his garden like a medium for
experimentation where the mown lawn becomes
an aesthetic composition. Roswitha Schuller and
Markus Hanakam analyse discourse on the history
of art, and seek the secret order involved in any
disorder. Bubi Canal describes the unconscious
expressions of different characters whose memory,
imagination and reality are inextricably linked. In
an art gallery, Crispin Gurholt assigns his models
the same roles as they play in reality, curator, critic
and gallery owner. Loïc Vanderstichelen and JeanPaul Jacquet follow a researcher who identifies a
collection for a new museum under construction.
His scientific point of view clashes with heightened
emotional feelings that will lead him to mental

Mélissa Epaminondi films the first modern
architecture in Sardinia that was built in 1965 and
is visible from everywhere in the city. Until 1970 a
bright star was put on top of it during the Christmas
period. During the same period man landed on the
moon. The film is an evocation of the collapse of
utopias.
Arnold Pasquier follows an architecture student
Federico in Palermo. He scours the city looking for
modern buildings to draw and photograph. In a park
he meets a young man, Borobudur, who will open
doors to another urbanity. Federico abandons his
daily life and discovers a city that transforms him in
the wake of this magical boy.

compiles extracts from Dutch public television in
the 60s, in relation to emigration and the perception
of those considered as ‘other,’ thus establishing a
comparison between collective consciousness and
censored archives. Eduardo Cachucho questions
the use of language and emotions, commonly used
by politicians with a view to controlling the masses.
He echoes the conclusions of the psychological
experiments carried out by Hendrik Verwoerd, who
in the 30s wrote ‘A Method for the Experimental
Production of Emotions’ through the use of colours
and symbols. Can Sungu reveals a fictional universe
based on stereotypes, culture shock and trauma
in the lives of immigrants. ‘Replaying Home’ is a
video collage of extracts from Turkish films shot in
Germany in the 70s and 80s specially intended for
the Turkish community, who gathered to see these
films on video evenings.

Fréderic Nauczyciel presents a ritual. Kendall Mugler,
part of the ‘voguing’ scene, puts his red stilettos on

and wild energy. Michelle Deignan makes two distinct
voices speak in a real and virtual simulacrum of
historical European buildings. One recites Kraftwerk
lyrics while the other quotes extracts from a science
fiction novel written in 1827. Jasmina Cibic films
four characters whose words are based on extracts
from discourse on architecture. She questions the
link between architecture and ideology. Su-Mei
Tse embarks on a walk. The emptiness is like time
suspended, this indefinite space similar to a short
pause before starting something. Sébastien Durante
sculpts his own bust and then throws it into water for
posterity. Pierre-Jean Giloux refers to metabolism,
a Japanese architectural movement in the 60s and
the last modernist utopia of the 20th century. In
Havana, Didier Faustino films the building built in
the 60s by the Italian architect Vittorio Garati. It was
for a dance school that never existed. Sasha Pirker

the Architektur Forum in the Tyrol. The soundtrack

Zackary Drucker portrays himself with his mother.

Matti Harju and Joakim Pusenius suggest a state
of silence intersecting the notions of beginning and
end. Simo Ezoubeiri films a man whose wife has left
him alone after 30 years together. Tommaso Donati
observes a homeless woman looking for her dog
and the caretaker of the Museum of Prehistory. They
cross paths united through the same primary need
and move about seeking something higher. MinhQuy Truong evokes the feeling of déjà vu. People
are looking for each other, thinking that they will
find one another, although it is only an illusion of the
mind. Henrik Lund Jörgensen refers to landscapes
of the romantic pictorial tradition and films by Carl
Th. Dreyer. He films young men in their desire to
enrol and desertion. Wichanon Somumjarn follows
a man responsible for requisitioning payment drafts,
facing the contradiction between his obligations
and aspirations. Michael Macgarry reinterprets
Thomas Mann’s short story, ‘Death in Venice’, and
the eponymous film by Visconti, following a young
immigrant from West Africa, in his journey from the
Italian Alps to Venice.

La Ribot takes another look at films that form
the history of cinema. In ‘Film noir 001’, La Ribot
features extras from two epics, ‘Spartacus’ by
Stanley Kubrick and ‘El Cid’ by Anthony Mann,
filmed in Spain in the 60s. An account of the
political and social movements in this period, the
film constructs the real story through anonymous
bodies. The series continues in ‘Film noir 002’ with
extras or workers from several films, leaving us to
thus contemplate their art of acting. The spatial and
choreographic aspect is central to ‘Film noir 003’.
Organised musically, the extras fill the background
space, creating a sensual and funny, sometimes
catastrophic, yet always impeccable performance.

In this experimental film that is part of a research

César revisits the work of the Guinean agronomist
Amilcar Cabral, from the study of soil erosion in the
Portuguese region of Alentejo until his commitment

She has made their daily lives into fiction, thereby

Adel Abidin: Michael | Video | hdv | colour | 0:16:10
| Finland | 2015
Alternately crossing forests, baroque ruins, control
towers and Roman catacombs in ‘sans titre’,
Clément Cogitore looks at a scientific community
in the footsteps of a magical animal. He questions
the unchanging nature of the meaning of the story
and image in the face of developing beliefs in
a confrontation between the subterranean and
elevated worlds, as well as archaism and new
technology. Adel Abidin questions the power of
contemporary icons and the belief that they generate
through the figure of Michael, interviewed after his
resurrection. His answers and speech are nothing
other than a compilation of his famous songs.

POST-TRAUMATIC
/ POST
TRAUMATISCH
Monira Al Qadiri brings together VHS images of an oil
well on fire in Kuwait after the first Gulf War in 1991.
These images, like scenes from the Apocalypse,
are accompanied by the sound of poems that the
television was broadcasting at the same time. At night
Johann Lurf films an arms and drones manufacturer
for military use in Austria. Guston Sondin-Kung
describes the participation of an intelligence officer,
from his hotel room in Denmark, in a cyber-attack
against an Iranian nuclear power station. Nadia and
Laila Hotait reinterpret the taking of hostages that
took place at Bank of America in Beirut on 18th
October 1973. Mariah Garnett films American war
veterans who continue to test their physical limits
on returning to civilian life. In ‘From Satin Island’,
in association with the writer Tom McCarthy, Johan
Grimonprez produces a haunting collage of disaster
and beauty. With ‘What I will’, we hear the voice of
the Jordanian-American poet Suheir Hammad, who
is seeking hope in the face of military parades and
anti-aircraft rifles. Lydia Moyer calls for reflection on
freedom in contemporary America following events
in Ferguson, Missouri.

of paper that he asks to be returned, to this eviction
notice that greatly upsets José Albert at the end of
the process, one of four Cape Verdeans continuing
these discussions in Lisbon on the unlikely dignity of
living.” (Raymond Bellour)
“I was a good mason. I have never built a crooked
wall. My boss has never complained about me. One
day the work stopped, I lost my unemployment
benefit. No retirement pension and no welfare
benefits. I looked for work everywhere with no
success. I brought no money home, Suzete threw
me out.”
Pedro Costa: O Nosso Homem | Exp. documentary
| hdv | colour | 0:23:00 | Portugal | 2013-2015
With ‘O Nosso Homem’ (Our Man) Pedro Costa
produces “a variation in the line of the trilogy
devoted to inhabitants of the Fontainhas district in
Lisbon, which has been destroyed in the meantime.
It can be considered as a sort of appendix to the
third part, ‘Colossal Youth!’ in which the hero,
Ventura, reappears as one of the four characters
of this dialogue of hopelessness. They continue,
from one setting to another, from the darkest to the
brightest, driven by sumptuous settings and shades
of light and shadow that once made Jacques
Rancière say (about ‘Colossal Youth!’): “The faith in
the art which attests to the greatness of the poor
– the greatness of each and every man– shines
here more than ever. But it does not assimilate it
anymore to an affirmation of a greeting.” A figure
runs through ‘O Nosso Homem’ expressing its
mythical power: “from this fellow who takes people
to a better life,” surreptitiously slipping them a piece

Had | Exp. documentary | hdv | colour and b&w |
1:48:00 | USA | 2015
Thom Andersen constructs this film around love and
the power of the seduction of films in this personal
history of cinema, inspired by Deleuze’s theory of
cinema. Like Deleuze he examines a huge area that
extends from Griffith to Godard, using cinematic
images not to explain, but to embody Deleuze’s
ideas in all their ambiguity, wealth and nuances.
