WELCOME TO THE 2015 DALLAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
PRESENTED BY AUTONATION AND A PRODUCTION OF THE DALLAS FILM SOCIETY
For more than a century, the art of film has captured the magic of human imagination
and the trials of the human spirit. Guided by the steady stream of new technology, film
today is a powerful force that can give a voice to the voiceless and push the boundaries
of what we consider possible.
It is our mission to encourage this universal art form by bringing to Dallas quality
independent films from around the world, and by promoting our own local filmmakers on
an international stage. North Texas filmmakers and the Dallas film community continue
to grow, producing inspirational and entertaining works that capture the attention and
respect of the international cinematic community.
This year, we also celebrate German Cinema with a showcase of films that investigates
the complex facets of the country’s cinematic heritage.
We give endless thanks to our hardworking team of DIFF volunteers, our Board of
Directors, Festival committees and juries, and our dedicated Festival staff. Without
the concerted efforts of all involved, this 11-day celebration, with more than 150 films,
events and panel discussions, would not be possible.
We are also immensely grateful for the philanthropic spirit of our sponsors, donors and
Dallas Film Society members. Your support directly benefits the artistic enrichment of
Dallas, Texas and beyond.
And of course we must thank the filmmakers, those passionate individuals who work
tirelessly to channel their creativity into films that inspire, excite, unnerve and amaze.
We welcome you all, and we look forward to seeing you at this year’s celebration.
With gratitude,
Lee Papert
Executive Director
Don Stokes
Chairman of the Board
James Faust
Artistic Director

PLAYING IT COOL
USA, 2014, 94 min., Color
Chris Evans stars alongside a hilarious, star-studded cast, in Justin Reardon’s feature debut, PLAYING IT COOL,
a rom-com about a writer struggling to write a rom-com. Evans plays the film’s narrator, a screenwriter who just
landed a great gig writing the script for Ashley Tisdale’s next movie. It’s sure to be a romantic comedy box office
hit. The problem: Evans’ character doesn’t believe in love. That is until he attends a charity function with do-gooder
friend Scott (Topher Grace) and meets HER. His life is suddenly thrown upside-down as he questions his beliefs
about life, love and happiness - oh, and he finally gets a little writing done, too.

ABOUT A GIRL (CHARLEEN MACHT SCHLUSS)
SWEET KANDY
Germany, 2014, 106 min., Color, In German with English subtitles
Being a teenager can be hard. Charleen is your typical teenager struggling with, well…just being. The brief respite
from melancholy provided by the music of Kurt Cobain can’t completely relieve her depression, and after a comically
botched suicide attempt Charleen is forced to see an unconventional therapist. In therapy, a new friendship begins
to show her life can be a little more enjoyable than what her favorite dead rock heroes may have written.

ECHOES OF WAR
USA, 2015, 104 min., Color
Kane Senes’ ECHOES OF WAR is full of rich, fully realized characters and smoldering intensity splashed across
gorgeous cinematography. The story takes place in 1866, not long after the end of The Civil War. Miles away in the
isolated countryside of Texas are two neighboring families: The Rileys and the McCluskeys. When uncle Wade Riley
comes to visit his family’s Texas home and discovers the McCluskeys have been stealing from his family, he decides
to take matters into his own hands.

Star-crossed Val and Kandy have learned things the hard way in the smoky ‘SWEET KANDY’. They’ve been beaten by
life, but have seemingly found safe haven in each other. When Val gets pinched by the feds and is incarcerated, his
separation from Kandy is too much to bear. She has reluctantly accepted the engagement of another man, driving Val
to risk everything. Nicholas Peate’s directorial debut is a Cajun noir, burned saga of two young lovers willing to go to
extraordinary lengths to find happiness.

THIS ISN’T FUNNY
USA, 2014, 93 min., Color + B/W
The title of director Paul Ashton’s film, THIS ISN’T FUNNY is a lie. This film is very funny. Like a lot of great comedy,
this film starts from pain…literally; our two would be lovers run into each other and the rest is a modern day
romance laid out with all prerequisite joy and pain. The film takes a look at the bitter sweet reality of finding that
special person in our lives.

SOME BEASTS
USA, 2015, 88 min., Color
Based in Southwest Virginia and loosely autobiographical in nature, writer/director Cameron Nelson’s SOME
BEASTS is a Thoreau-style narrative that incorporates both the land itself and the non-actors who inhabit it into
the story. Nelson’s film combines aspects of narrative filmmaking with ethnographic documentary techniques to
achieve a heightened sense of realism. SOME BEASTS will capture audiences with its breathtaking scenery, subtle
performances and timeless story about one man’s choice between living his dreams and facing his responsibilities.

BLAH AIRLINES FLIGHT 101
PRESENTED BY VIRGIN AMERICA
A baby cries. Food is scarce. The hours drag on, painfully. Hope
disappears. And the seatbelt light remains on. For 5 hours and 45 minutes, BLAH AIRLINES FLIGHT 101
is hauntingly familiar, shockingly unique, and — somehow — compulsively watchable.
Since its launch in 2007, Virgin America has been the antidote to the typical, uninspiring air travel
experience. So the airline and its agency Eleven teamed
up to remind everyone they don’t need to fly “blah.” A film
that AdWeek called “brilliant,” BLAH AIRLINES FLIGHT 101
is a cinema vérité take on the weird reality of air travel at
its worst.

A typical online flirtation between two strangers becomes a case of shocking international intrigue. Filmmaker
Sophie Desraspe creates a hypersexualized tableau and follows Sandra from Montreal to Istanbul to Tel Aviv to
Chicago to reconstruct and unravel a fascinating love story-cum-political thriller. THE AMINA PROFILE is truly a tale

When your government cannot provide basic safety from murderous organized criminals, is it acceptable to take
the law into your own hands to protect your family, your land, and your country? That is the question at the heart of
CARTEL LAND, a chilling meditation on the breakdown of order and the borderline where life trumps law. Dr. Jose

boss, Lupe. Will Larry keep it together long enough to win the girl, provide for his French bulldog, laze about with his
friend Major (TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe), and do his cantankerous grandmother (Olympia Dukakis) proud?

ALICE IN MARIALAND (ALICIA EN EL PAIS DE MARIA)
BEING EVEL
Mexico, 2014, 86 min., Color & B/W, In Spanish with English subtitles
The violent love-hate triangle among Tonatiuh (Claudio Lafarga), Maria (Bárbara Mori), and Alicia (Stephanie Sigman) develops through fantasies and flashbacks that intermix organically due to Jesus Magaña Vasquez’s directorial
style and the riveting performances of the protagonists. The inherent surrealism of the narrative only accentuates
the hard truths of reality and human emotions that it reflects. Ultimately, audiences willing to travel to MARIALAND
will not be disappointed by the lyrical, oneiric, and challenging ride.

ASCO
Brazil, 2014, 70 min., B/W, In Spanish with English subtitles
Shot entirely in black-and-white, Alexandre Pascolini’s feature directorial debut unfolds as an expressionistic
tour-de-force crafted by an artist with something to say who refuses to use mere words to say it. Containing almost
no dialogue, and using a beautiful and narratively-relevant cinematography, ASCO delivers a story through its lead
characters that both questions and pushes the boundaries between desire and obsession that grow increasingly
blurry and dangerous in our contemporary world.

MR. KAPLAN
Uruguay, 2014, 98 min., Color, In Spanish with English subtitles
The ennui of everyday life, the perils of old age, and WW2 survivors and Nazi criminals collide in director Alvaro
Brechner’s second feature. Jacob Kaplan embarks on a mission, determined to hunt down a notorious Nazi believed
to have fled to South America, all in an attempt to make up for his fading glory and life. Brechner crafts a story that
transcends the usual slice-of-life approach, ultimately making audiences enjoy MR. KAPLAN’s last hurrah as much
as himself.

DO I SOUND GAY?
USA, 2014, 77 min., Color
Uncomfortable with sounding “too gay,” journalist and filmmaker David Thorpe meets with a speech pathologist
to discover his true voice. What began as a personal journey quickly became a larger examination of sexuality and
identity. A witty and insightful documentary, DO I SOUND GAY?, reminds us that being comfortable and authentic in
your own voice—no matter how it sounds—is ultimately what’s most important.

FRESH DRESSED
USA, 2014, 82 min., Color
With funky, fat-laced Adidas, Kangol hats, and Cazal shades, a totally original look was born—Fresh—and it came
from the black and brown side of town where another cultural force was revving up in the streets to take the world
by storm. FRESH DRESSED is a fascinating, fun-to-watch chronicle of hip-hop, urban fashion, and the hustle that
brought oversized pants and graffiti-drenched jackets from Orchard Street to high fashion’s catwalks and Middle
America shopping malls.

An eccentric daredevil, a brash pop icon, and a real-life American superhero to many in the 1970s are just a few
ways to describe Evel Knievel. In BEING EVEL Academy Award-winning filmmaker Daniel Junge, teams up with actor/
producer Johnny Knoxville to share the complex and epic story of Knievel’s life, giving audiences a rare glimpse into
this bigger-than-life legend and the influences he left on our culture.

USA, 2015, 104 min., Color
In 1982, 11-year-olds Eric Zala and Chris Strompolos began a shot for shot remake of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
They spent the next seven summers working on the film with their siblings and friends. They reshot every scene
except one: the infamous Flying Wing explosion at the film’s finale. Now in their early 40s, Eric, Chris and many of the
original cast and crew reunite to complete their film and capture that last missing scene.

1970’s. Paula is a modern gal who also happens to be the star of a live-action Wild West Show. Pepper is more than
just her dog; he’s a fiercely loyal best friend. When an underhanded rival and an accident threaten to derail Paula’s

PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE
USA, 1985, 91 min., Color
Now, 30-years after its release, PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE holds up as a masterpiece of comedy. When Pee Wee’s
bike is stolen, he embarks on a cross-country trip to find it. Paul Ruben’s grab bag of goofy facial expressions,
Burton’s fantasyland set, and a cast of larger-than-life characters will hold the attention of the kids. But the
sardonic asides set up by Rubens and his co-writers give the film lasting appeal. The jokes fly way over the heads of
the kiddos and land squarely on adult funny bones.
