Luzerne County Kindergarten Readiness Guide 2012
Luzerne County
Kindergarten Readiness Guide
2012
A guide to helping your child prepare for the transition to
kindergarten, including useful tips and kindergarten entrance
requirements for Luzerne County public schools and Early
Learning Centers.
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Professionals, Friends, and Community Members:
The LEARN Team of Luzerne County is a public/private partnership dedicated to
improving outcomes for Luzerne County’s children, youth, and families. In 2002, through
the United Way of Wyoming Valley, an Early Care Initiative was developed to ensure that
children, at the earliest ages, are ready to learn and are receiving quality services. Since
that time, the LEARN Team has established School Readiness as a top priority for the
committee. The purpose of this initiative is to ensure that all children have the skills
needed for school success when they enter kindergarten.
The purpose of this tool is to provide parents and caregivers with a listing of public
kindergarten programs and learning centers in the county as well as an understanding of
what skills children should have prior to kindergarten. It is important to note that this
information should serve as a guide for parents and caregivers to understand how they
can help his or her child prepare for the transition.
For more information or resources please contact the United Way of Wyoming Valley at:

Louise Menendez

Pennsylvania Early Learning
Standards forPre-Kindergarten
In an effort to increase the quality of childcare in Pennsylvania, the Department of
Education and Public Welfare developed the Pre-Kindergarten Early Learning
Standards.
The Standards will allow early learning providers, childcare professionals,
Kindergarten teachers, and parents to begin to understand child development from a
common language and framework.
The key learning areas for pre-kindergarten education and development to promote
readiness for school include: Approaches to Learning, Creative Arts, Language
and Literacy, Logical-Mathematical, Personal-Social, Physical-Health
Program, Partnerships Science, and Social Studies.
These standards will help providers understand how they can support this learning
throughout their routines. For a complete copy of the Early Learning Standards, visit the
Pennsylvania Department of Education Web Site at http://www.pde.state.pa.us/.

Department of Public
Welfare
In 2002, Luzerne County Head Start developed the Kindergarten Readiness Checklist to give parents, providers and
Kindergarten teachers a better understanding of each child before entering Kindergarten. The checklist is not a
mandatory list of what each child must accomplish, but rather a guideline of expectations. (Revised 2010)
