KERN COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE SHAFTER 5 KERN COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE www.KernCountyWaste.com BUYBACK RECYCLING PROGRAMS 6 $ Residents have the option of "selling" their residential recyclable materials to a Buy Back Center. These centers pay residents for their aluminum cans, glass and plastic items with a noted CRV stamp on the label. There are dozens of BUY BACK RECYCLING LOCATIONS throughout the county. These centers primarily accept those items with a CRV (California Redemption Value). Some sites will accept other items, such as newspaper, but will not pay you for the materials. Remember to rinse out your bottles and cans before turning them in for redemption. WHAT IS CRV? Beverage containers labeled CRV (California Redemption Value) can be redeemed at Certified Redemption Centers. The CRV deposit is 5¢ per container under 24 oz. and 10¢ per container 24 oz. or more. Most recycling centers pay by the pound if you bring in a large load, so be sure to have only CRV containers to get the highest possible refund. You can request to be paid on a per-container basis. If you bring in loads of fewer than 50 per material type ask the recycler to pay by count instead of by weight. Call or visit the website for more information about CRV Redemption Centers. www.bottlesandcans.com 1-800-RECYCLE WHICH BEVERAGE CONTAINERS CAN YOU REDEEM FOR CRV? In addition to these items, we also have a variety of specialized cleaning products for the tires, dashboard, and engine compartment. These materials can endanger our health and environment if improperly disposed. Are You A Do-It-Yourselfer? Be sure to recycle automotive fluids properly. The good news is that automotive products are becoming easier to dispose of properly. An increasing number of stores, service stations, recycling centers and residential recycling programs are accepting these materials. Oil filters are also recyclable at the oil collection sites maintained by the Kern CountyWaste Management Department. Check out the Oil Recycling Website at www.calrecycle.ca.gov/usedoil/ for site locations and more information. Antifreeze is toxic, and is deadly to pets and children if accidentally ingested. Handle this liquid with care. In Metro Bakersfield it can be brought to the Kern County Special Waste Facility at 4951 Standard St., in East Kern County at 17035 Finnin St. at the Mojave Airport, or at 3301 W. Bowman Rd. at the Ridgecrest Landfill. For days and hours of operation, look on our website at www.KernCountyWaste.com. Batteries - Automotive/Truck/Tractor/ Equipment may be sold to scrap metal dealers. They are often accepted at automotive parts stores and service centers as well. Tires, because of their physical properties, present health and handling challenges to disposal facility operators. Whole tires are banned from disposal at landfills in California. Many tire dealers will accept small quantities for a nominal fee. Landfills will also accept tires separated from general trash for a per-tire charge or, if applicable, at a bulk rate. For more recycling alternatives, see the A - Z Section page 21. KERN COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE Motor Oil gets dirty with use, but once cleaned or re-refined, it can be used again and again with the same effectiveness as virgin oil. Used motor oil must never be mixed with any other liquid. Used motor oil is accepted at many service stations, auto parts stores, recycling centers and at most Kern County landfills. Some local jurisdictions even have curbside used oil collection programs. Check out the Oil Recycling Website at www. calrecycle.ca.gov/usedoil/ for site locations and more information. www.KernCountyWaste.com AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS 9 KERN COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE www.KernCountyWaste.com WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 10 BULKY WASTE/LARGE ITEM COLLECTION CURBSIDE BULKY WASTE COLLECTION Residents in the Metro-Bakersfied area can have their bulky items, including appliances, sofas, chairs, and other large furniture pieces picked up – FREE OF CHARGE. What is CALGreen? In an effort to reduce green house gas emissions and fight against climate change, the State of California Green Building Code Requirements, known as CALGreen, took effect beginning January 2011. The new building code mandates more energy efficiency, water efficiency and resource conservation measures for all newly constructed commercial and residential projects. The CALGreen Code is a comprehensive and uniform regulatory code that applies to all residential, commercial, hospital and school buildings to ensure that every new building in California is built using environmentally advanced construction practices which includes construction waste diversion requirements as follows: • Submit a Construction Waste Management Plan prior to construction for approval by the local Building Department. • Recycle and/or Reuse a minimum of 50% of construction & demolition waste. • Recycle or Reuse 100% of tree stumps, rocks and associated vegetation and soils resulting from land clearing. 12 For more information about these requirements, contact your City or County Building Department. SPECIAL RECYCLING PROGRAMS - FREE! Household Hazardous Waste One-Day Collection Events One-day collection events allow residents in the outlying areas of Kern County to drop off household hazardous waste at a location in their community. These “Toxic Roundup” events are held periodically throughout the year in the Kern Valley, Tehachapi, Frazier Park and Lebec communities. For information check out www.KernCountyWaste. com or call (661) 8628900 for locations, dates and times. CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING Christmas Tree Recycling is a cooperative effort between the Kern County Waste Management Department, municipalities and community groups to recycle trees. Check the website www.kerncountywaste.com for drop-off locations and tree pick up services. TELEPHONE BOOK RECYCLING The Telephone Book Recycling Program is a cooperative effort between phone book companies and the Department to collect used phone books for recycling. Call (661) 862-8900 for more information. For year-round recycling options see the charts on pages 2, 4 and 5 of this guide. RECYCLING OUTREACH & EDUCATION Public education and community outreach are ongoing activities for the Waste Management Department. Effective communication is a must to ensure efficient management of the waste stream. Staff members participate in community and business events, street fairs and public speaking opportunities. Written materials, face-to-face discussions, website activity, radio and television commercials, press conferences and media events are important outreach tools to get the Waste Management message to the general public. www.KernCountyWaste.com TOXIC ROUNDUPS The Clean Kids Puppet Shows From Lost Hills to Ridgecrest, the Clean Kids puppet shows provide an opportunity for students to become teachers. Ten children use ventriloquist-sized puppets to deliver waste management messages to the rest of the school. With more than a decade of school participation, this award-winning program has to be seen to be appreciated. Once the puppets have been to a school, Principals want them back every year! Interested educators can contact the Waste Management Department at (661) 862-8900 and reserve a spot! KERN COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE We also believe that education, at the elementary school level, can have a lasting impact on the future of this county. The Department, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Community Clean Sweep, provides an interactive, environmental puppet show program to thousands of elementary-aged students each year. 13 KERN COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE www.KernCountyWaste.com ELECTRONIC WASTE (E-WASTE) 14 Computer Monitors and Televisions Current state and federal regulations mandate that cathode ray tubes (CRTs) found in computer monitors and televisions cannot be disposed of in landfills. However, there are several REUSE & RECYCLING options available to Kern County residents: • Televisions and computer monitors, still in working condition, can be donated to local nonprofit organizations to be reused. • Non-working computer monitors and televisions are accepted at all Kern County Disposal sites for recycling at NO CHARGE. • Non-working computer monitors and televisions are also accepted for recycling at thrift shops and non-profit organizations such as Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army, Bakersfield Association of Retarded Citizens (BARC) and others that have been authorized by the state. (see A-Z Section – Electronics) It is estimated that 6,000 computers become obsolete in California everyday! Less than 15% of these are recycled. Other Electronics The method to recycle other electronic waste such as central processing units (CPUs), computer peripherals, stereos, VCRs, copiers, and other circuit board containing devices is constantly evolving. Please see the listing under “Electronics” in the A-Z Section of this guide for re-use/recycling locations. For the latest details on local electronics handling options, check the Kern County Waste Management website (www.kerncountywaste.com) Computer Printer / Copier / Fax Machine Supplies Did you know that when your toner cartridge or inkjet cartridge is empty, it can be refilled for less money than buying a new one? There are many companies that recycle cartridges, either paying outright for the cartridge or offering a discount on the purchase of a refilled one. For a local source, see page 27 under Toner Cartridges, or check the Yellow Pages under Computer Supplies & Parts. For other Cartridge Reuse and Recycling Programs visit www.calrecycle.ca.gov/reducewaste/electronics/InkAndToner.htm CLOSE THE LOOP - Help support recycling efforts by buying recycled toner and inkjet cartridges. Recycled/ remanufactured cartridges often need to meet the same standards as new cartridges. E-WASTE Monitors, CPUs, Laptops & Peripherals CLOSE THE LOOP Businesses Businesses with large volumes of Covered Electronic Waste which include televisions and computer monitors can visit the Electronic Product Management website at www. calrecycle.ca.gov/electronics/collection/recyclersearch. aspx for a current list of approved collectors and recyclers in Kern County. Each time you enter a contest, make a donation, take a survey, buy something on credit or with a check, order products by mail or send in a subscription, there's a good chance your name and address will be added to a mailing list. These lists are valuable commodities regularly sold or traded. Below are steps you can take to reduce junk mail. Be patient - it takes three to six months before you notice a reduction in your junk mail. In the meantime, remember to recycle junk mail you receive. 1.) Call mail-order catalog companies- Most catalogs provide a telephone number for placing an order; call this number and ask to be taken off their mailing list. 2.) Contact specific organizations or businesses- If you receive unwanted flyers or mail, call the customer service department of the organization or business responsible and request that your name be removed from their mailing list. 3.) Return junk mail- Envelopes stamped "address correction requested" or "return postage guaranteed" can be returned unopened to the sender by writing "refused, return to sender" on the envelope. DO NOT write this on mail without that special notation; the post office will not return it to the sender. 4.) Get your name off national mailing lists and off the lists of mailing list brokers- Write to the addresses below and ask to be placed on a "suppress" file. Include a list of your name and address in all the different ways it appears on your junk mail. The Mail Preference Service places your name in the suppress file for five years. The Direct Marketing Association sends this list to its business subscribers four times a year. The address for "Telephone Preference Service" will remove your name from many telemarketers’ lists. A-Z RECYCLING GUIDE The guide focuses on "re-using" materials and recycling materials. Reuse means the repeated use of a product or material in its original form. Recycle means to break the material down to its original form and make it into entirely new product. Reuse and Recycling are both important because both save natural resources and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
