It is designed to provide Kern County residents with information on reuse and recycling options available throughout the county. Although it is our desire to provide you with a complete resource, we acknowledge that we may have unknowingly omitted a service provider. If you know of such organization or business, please let us know. We will be pleased to include them in future publications. This guide is for informational purposes only and should not be construed as a recommendation or endorsement by the Kern County Waste Management Department (KCWMD). Aluminum Beverage Containers: Rinse containers and flatten to reduce size. Plastics: Look on the bottom of the plastic container for a number inside a triangle. This number tells what kind of plastic the container is made of. Only #1 and #2 plastic containers are recyclable. Rinse out containers. Sort containers by plastics number. Flatten containers as much as possible and remove lids. Deposit the clean container into the correct drop-off compartment. Containers which once stored motor oil are not acceptable for recycling. These centers pay residents for their aluminum cans, glass and plastic items with a noted CRV stamp on the label. There are dozens of BUY BACK RECYCLING LOCATIONS throughout the county. These centers primarily accept those items with a CRV (California Redemption Value). Some sites will accept other items (such as newspaper) but will not pay you for the materials. Remember to rinse out your bottles and cans before turning them in for redemption. WHAT IS CRV? Beverage containers labeled CRV (California Refund Value) can be redeemed at Certified Redemption Centers. The CRV deposit is 5¢ per container under 24 oz. and 10¢ per container 24 oz. or more. Most recycling centers pay by the pound if you bring in a large load, so be sure to have only CRV containers to get the highest possible refund. You can request to be paid on a per-container basis. If you bring in loads of fewer than 50 per material type ask the recycler to pay by count instead of by weight. Call or visit the website for more information about CRV Redemption Centers. www.bottlesandcans.com 1-800-RECYCLE $ WHICH BEVERAGE CONTAINERS CAN YOU REDEEM FOR CRV? Included in this recycling category are stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, and water heaters. WHITE GOODS can be recycled, FREE OF CHARGE, at all Kern County landfills and transfer stations. Appliances must be empty. For non-working appliances, there is an alternative to taking the appliance to the landfill. Some scrap metal dealers will buy appliances for the value of the metal. However, MANY do not take refrigerators, freezers, water coolers, or air conditioning units because these appliances contain freon, an ozone-depleting gas. METRO-BAKERSFIELD BULKY WASTE/LARGE ITEM CURBSIDE COLLECTION Residents in the Metro Bakersfield area can have their bulky items, including appliances, sofas, chairs and other large furniture pieces picked up at the curb - FREE OF CHARGE. To schedule your curbside pick-up call: City of Bakersfield - Solid Waste................................................ (661) 326-3114 Unincorporated Metro Bakersfield............................................. (661) 322-6863 Valley Garbage Service Area..................................................... (661) 323-8154 OTHER CITIES IN KERN COUNTY Some cities are offering their residents bulky item pickup at the curb. See page 1 of this guide for contact information for your city. For more recycling alternatives, see the A - Z Section page 19. KERN COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE Kern County sponsors Bulky Waste Collection events throughout the County. Check the website www.co.kern.ca.us/wmd, or call the Kern County Waste Management Department at (661) 862-8900 for the date and location of the next event in your area. www.co.kern.ca.us/wmd However, before taking a working appliance to the landfill, contact your local thrift shop or used appliance dealer. In addition to these items, we also have a variety of specialized cleaning products for the tires, dashboard, and engine compartment. These materials can endanger our health and environment if improperly disposed. Are You A Do-It-Yourselfer? Be sure to recycle automotive fluids properly. The good news is that automotive products are becoming easier to dispose of properly. An increasing number of stores, service stations, recycling centers and residential recycling programs are accepting these materials. Motor Oil gets dirty with use, but once cleaned or re-refined; it can be used again and again with the same effectiveness as virgin oil. Used motor oil must never be mixed with any other liquid. Used motor oil is accepted at many service stations, auto parts stores, recycling centers and at most Kern County landfills. Some local jurisdictions even have curbside used oil collection programs. Check out the Oil Recycling Website at www.calrecycle.ca.gov/ usedoil/centers for site locations and more information. Oil filters are also recyclable at the oil collection sites maintained by the Kern CountyWaste Management Department. Check out the Oil Recycling Website at www.calrecycle.ca.gov/usedoil/centers for site locations and more information. Antifreeze is toxic, and is deadly to pets and children if accidentally ingested. Handle this liquid with care. In Metro Bakersfield it can be brought to the Kern County Special Waste Facility at 4951 Standard St., in East Kern County at 17035 Finnin St. at the Mojave Airport, or at 3301 W. Bowman Rd. at the Ridgecrest Landfill. For days and hours of operation call (661) 862-8922. Batteries - Automotive/Truck/Tractor/ Equipment may be sold to scrap metal dealers. They are often accepted at automotive parts stores and service centers as well. Tires, because of their physical properties, present health and handling challenges to disposal facility operators. Whole tires are banned from landfills in California. Many tire dealers will accept small quantities for a nominal fee. Landfills will also accept tires separated from general trash for a per-tire charge or, if applicable, at a bulk rate. For more recycling alternatives, see the A - Z Section page 19. Construction or demolition material is nonhazardous building materials or debris (including packaging of same) resulting from the construction, remodeling, repair or demolition of homes, structures, buildings, garages etc. Architectural Salvage – doors, windows, decorative moldings, railings, brick, light & plumbing fixtures can be sold or commissioned to an Architectural Salvage House. Look in the Yellow Pages under "Architectural Salvage". Antique Dealers – certain decorative elements (moldings, medallions), & light fixtures can be donated, commissioned or sold to a local Antique Dealer. Habitat for Humanity – New, unused home construction materials can be donated to the Kern County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Construction & Demolition Recyclers Check out the A-Z section of this Recycling Guide by material type or in the Yellow Pages of this directory. However, there are several REUSE & RECYCLING options available to Kern County residents: • Televisions and computers monitors, still in working condition, can be donated to local nonprofit organizations to be reused. • Non-working computer monitors and televisions are accepted at all Kern County Disposal sites for recycling at NO CHARGE. • Non-working computer monitors and televisions are also accepted, for recycling, at thrift shops and non-profit organizations such as Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army, Bakersfield Association of Retarded Citizens (BARC) and others that have been authorized by the state. (see A-Z Section – Electronics) It is estimated that 6,000 computers become obsolete in California everyday! Less than 15% of these are recycled. Other Electronics The method to recycle other electronic waste such as central processing units (CPUs), computer peripherals, stereos, VCRs, copiers, and other circuit board containing devices is constantly evolving. Please see the listing under “Electronics” in the A-Z Section of this guide for re-use/recycling locations. For the latest details on local electronics handling options, check the Kern County Waste Management website (www.co.kern.ca.us/wmd) Computer Printer / Copier / Fax Machine Supplies Did you know that when your toner cartridge or inkjet cartridge is empty, it can be refilled for less money than buying a new one? There are many companies that recycle cartridges, either paying outright for the cartridge or offering a discount on the purchase of a refilled one. For a local source, see page 27 under Toner Cartridges, or check the Yellow Pages under Computer Supplies & Parts. For other Cartridge Reuse and Recycling Programs visit www.calrecycle.ca.gov/WPIE/Electronics/InkAndToner.htm CLOSE THE LOOP - Help support recycling efforts by buying recycled toner and inkjet cartridges. Each time you enter a contest, make a donation, take a survey, buy something on credit or with a check, order products by mail or send in a subscription, there's a good chance your name and address will be added to a mailing list. These lists are valuable commodities regularly sold or traded. Below are steps you can take to reduce junk mail. Be patient - it takes three to six months before you notice a reduction in your junk mail. In the meantime, remember to recycle junk mail you receive. 1.) Call mail-order catalog companies- Most catalogs provide an 800 telephone number for placing an order; call this number and ask to be taken off their mailing list. www.co.kern.ca.us/wmd 2.) Contact specific organizations or businesses- If you receive unwanted flyers or mail, call the customer service department of the organization or business responsible and request that your name be removed from their mailing list. 3.) Return junk mail- Envelopes stamped "address correction requested" or "return postage guaranteed" can be returned unopened to the sender by writing "refused, return to sender" on the envelope. DO NOT write this on mail without that special notation; the post office will not return it to the sender. The program accepts grass clippings, leaves, tree branches and bush branches less than 1.5 inches in diameter and 12" in length. No palm or yucca is accepted in the curbside program. Creosote-treated wood IS NOT accepted. Large garden clean-ups and landscape/garden professionals: The City of Bakersfield operates a facility to handle large amounts of green waste from landscape/garden professionals or from large residential garden clean-ups. You can dispose of palm and yucca trimmings here. Creosote-treated wood IS NOT accepted. The City of Bakersfield Green Waste Facility is located one mile south of Hwy. 58 on Mount Vernon Avenue in Bakersfield. Open Daily 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phone: (661) 835-8873 OUTLYING AREAS OF KERN Grass clippings, tree branches, mulberry tree branches and construction lumber can be recycled at various landfills throughout the County. Details follow: •The Bena Landfill accepts segregated grass clippings, leaves and manure in a separate area for composting. Bena also accepts tree trimmings and construction lumber. • The Shafter-Wasco Landfill accepts segregated grass clippings, leaves and manure in a separate area for composting. Shafter-Wasco also accepts tree trimmings and construction lumber. •The Taft Landfill accepts tree trimmings and construction lumber. •The Lebec Transfer Station accepts segregated grass clippings, leaves and manure in a separate area for composting. The Lebec Transfer Station also accepts tree trimmings and construction lumber. •The Buttonwillow Transfer Station accepts tree trimmings and construction lumber. •The City of Wasco Green and Wood Waste Facility accepts tree trimmings, but will not accept mulberry tree branches. •The Ridgecrest and Tehachapi Landfills accept tree trimmings and construction lumber for grinding and reuse. •The Kern Valley Transfer Station accepts tree trimmings and construction lumber. •The McFarland-Delano Transfer Station accepts segregated grass clippings, leaves and manure in a separate area for composting. The McFarland-Delano Transfer Station also accepts tree trimmings and construction lumber. About 30% of what comes into Kern County landfills is yard waste and grass clippings. Many people treat their lawn like a "crop". They (over) water and (over) fertilize their lawns to encourage excessive growth. The harvested "crop" (grass clippings) is bagged as trash and transported to a landfill. A home gardener can use grass clippings and yard waste to improve the quality of their lawn and garden soil. Three common methods are grasscycling, composting and mulching. • Grass-cycling is the natural recycling of grass by leaving clippings on the lawn when mowing. Grass clippings will quickly decompose, returning valuable nutrients to the soil. • Composting, nature’s own way of recycling, is the controlled decomposition of organic material such as leaves, twigs, grass clippings, and vegetable food waste. • Mulch consists of dead leaves, twigs, fallen branches and other plant debris which accumulate on the earth’s surface. Mulch is "chunkier" than compost. Mulch conserves moisture, and feeds plants, earth worms, microbes and other beneficial soil life by composting at the moist earth surface. Call 661862-8900 for more information. The A-Z Recycling Guide provides information on ways local residents can donate, sell, purchase and recycle used products and materials. Our goal is to decrease the amount of waste sent to local landfills. California Assembly Bill 939 requires local cities and counties to reduce the amount of waste going to local landfills. We all must do our part! The guide focuses on "re-using" materials and recycling materials. Reuse means the repeated use of a product or material in its original form. Recycle means to break the material down, to its original form, and make it into entirely new product. Reuse and Recycling are both important because both save natural resources and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. These roads meander through the countryside and connect residents to places beyond their front door. Sadly, some of the roadways have fallen victim to flyaway trash and illegally dumped garbage. These roads need your help. Take pride in the place we call home; join the Keep Kern Roads Clean project. When you join, you promise to clean up a two-mile stretch of roadway at least four times a year. Encourage friends, family, and co-workers to help. The effort will make a visible difference in the way our county looks, and a meaningful difference in the hearts of those who volunteer. Keep Make a difference Kern you can see!
