THE ISLAND OF EDEN
A few million years ago, this exotic Creole island was the
scene of volcanic activity. Today, things are calmer, and
Mauritius is an island of luscious landscapes in the glossy
Indian Ocean.

It’s an ideal holiday destination for South Africans, with
activities like sunset cruises, horse riding, dolphin tours and
scuba diving on offer. You’ll be kept occupied – if that’s what
you want, of course.
If you are a South African citizen, you won’t need a visa.
Mauritius really is much more than a beach when it comes to
attractions.
October and May are known as the transition months. The
warmest months are January and February with a 29°C
average day maximum temperature. The coolest months are
July and August when average night minimum temperatures
drop down to 16.4°C.
There’s bird watching and hiking in the forested and
mountainous interiors.
There’s world-class diving and snorkelling off the coast.
There are boat trips to flawless unspoilt islets, excursions
to magnificent botanical gardens and visits to colonial
plantation houses. So what do you fancy? Whatever it is,
you’re spoilt for choice.

Mauritius has a mild tropical maritime climate all year round,
with two seasons: a warm humid summer from November to
April and a cool dry winter from June to September.
The currency is the Mauritian Rupee and the official
languages are English and French. The plug points in
Mauritius are different, so do your homework and make sure
you bring the right adaptor.
Mauritian culture is very “laid-back”, so bikinis, dresses,
shorts and slip-slops are quite okay – pack for an informal
summer – but remember that some resorts have a smart
casual dress code after 6pm.

CHOICES, CHOICES, CHOICES.
In Mauritius, you can relax by the pool, sip on cocktails and
be pampered all day, but there are many other adventures to
enjoy outside the resorts:
1. EXPERIENCE AN ISLET ESCAPADE on the south-east
coast. A boat will take you to the 25-hectare nature
reserve of Ile aux Aigrettes. Here you’ll find indigenous
plants and coastal ebony forests, or discover the marine
environment by snorkelling or taking a trip on a glassbottom boat in the protected marine park of Blue Bay.
2. RUM, ANYONE? It wouldn’t be a tropical island without
a sailor’s favourite tipple. Visit one of the distilleries,
where local sugar cane is used to brew exquisite spiced
rum – in a whole range of flavours. Yo ho ho!
3. THE SEVEN COLOURED EARTH. You’ve seen nothing
like this natural phenomenon: The volcanic rock of the
island has resulted in brilliantly coloured sand in seven
distinct colours: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple
and yellow.
4. THE DODO: GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. See the
remains of the extinct flightless bird at the National
History Museum in Port Louis, home to one of the few
remaining dodo skeletons.
5. CLIMB THE VOLCANO. DRIVE INLAND TO TROU
AUX CERFS, an extinct volcano overlooking the town
of Curepipe. And if you like a good hike, you can make

your way to the top of the volcano for awesome views
over the island and crater-lake.
6. CAN YOU SAY PAMPLEMOUSSES? VISIT THE
BOTANICAL GARDENS.The oldest botanical garden
in the southern hemisphere is located near Port Louis
in the district of Pamplemousses. It’s one of the world’s
most admired gardens. And it’s pronounced “pump-lermoose”. So now you know.
7. VISIT THE BEAUTIFUL MAHESWARNATH MANDIR
HINDU TEMPLE, definitely worth several photographs,
and known locally as “Grand Shivala Triolet” in the
village of Triolet.
8. ILE AUX CERFS. Make a memorable visit to some of the
world’s most beautiful beaches – right here in Mauritius.
9. VISIT VICTORIA 1840 ART MUSEUM & RESTAURANT
in the village of Trou d’Eau Douce in the east. It’s an
old sugar-cane factory that has been converted into a
contemporary art museum and restaurant.
10. THERE’S NO FOOD LIKE STREET FOOD – and
Mauritian street food is among the best in the world.
A unique mix of Creole, African, Indian and Chinese
influences, the dishes offer bursts of intricate flavours.

While we take care of the magic, you’ll need to handle the
formalities. Send your original unabridged birth certificates to
the Mauritian civil status office, eight weeks in advance, and
get a certificate from the South African Registrar of births,
deaths and marriages stating that you are neither a Mauritian
citizen nor a resident.
After three working days, you’ll receive approval from the
authorities, and you’ll be free to have your ceremony within 24
hours.

On the first working day that you’re in Mauritius, you will go
to the Supreme Court and appear before a magistrate who
will check your birth certificates and passports and ask you to
declare that you are not already married.
