Send your written article to: Kris Waskiewicz, Editor 2523 Braehead Lane Henderson, NV 89044 702-869-2126 [email protected] www.sstdp.com As I write this article the broadcasters on TV are saying that tonight it will be officially the first day of spring. That is really hard to believe when the weather has been like a rollercoaster and will continue with its ups and downs this whole week. We shall see. I am so sorry I was not able to paint with Cathy Frazier last month. Sitting in the back of the room I had a great opportunity to view the project from afar because of our new A/V equipment and that cat face with those very expressive eyes was awesome. Cathy, thank you for teaching such a great project. Yours truly will be teaching the Poppy Floral workshop in April. We have many other painting opportunities on the horizon. Some of the upcoming events will be the Prudy Vannier Seminar in May, also in May Sharon Shuster will be teaching a Paint-In. You might consider going to the Gypsy Tolers Retreat in June. Kris Waskiewicz does such a wonderful job with our newsletter so please read it from start to finish to find out all the latest information on what your Chapter is doing. At our Chapter March gathering we welcomed three new members. I love that Sharon Shuster our Membership VP ran out of the new directory and will have to print more … this is one of those “happy happenings”. This is so exciting because in others parts of the country the Chapters are losing members and some Chapters are having to disband. Keep talking about the Chapter with anyone and everyone you meet sharing your excitement about our art form. Until next month keep those brushes moving, Barbara page 1 Hello Chapter Members, The last Chapter meeting was so much fun, thanks so much to Cathy Frazier for teaching us; everyone’s cat turned out really good. Love seeing different things that our members bring to paint on. Thanks, Pat S., for painting the calendar insert for March. Kris will paint the one for April. MS RA G O PR April In April Barbara Paetzel is teaching us to paint a poppy flowers design by Carole Valtierra. It's a beautiful piece. The class is $15.00 (nonrefundable). Barbara has painted the piece on canvas, but as always you may paint it on whatever you like. If you haven't signed up yet, send me the money and I will mail you the pattern, or you may come and pick it up from me. In May we have a business meeting followed by a Paint-In taught by Sharon Shuster. The project is a fall screen painting to frame or to make into a purse, whichever you would like to do. The design is by Barbara Jones. Sharon was selling the screen at our last meeting for $3.00; if you would like to paint it on screen and need some, give her a call. The class is $10.00 to hold your seat and is refundable if you show up to paint. We have had some misunderstanding about having your money refunded—to get your money back you must stay and paint, if you don't stay and paint the money is not refunded. In June Char Davis will teach a bird design by Mabel Blanco. The project will be on display at our next meeting. The workshop is $15.00 (nonrefundable). Just a reminder to everyone, during the time we are painting, I will be walking around and handing out the patterns of the projects that you have signed up for. There will be a check at the top corner of the envelope when I have given you your pattern, so if you have forgotten if I gave you your pattern, check the envelope. At the end of the Chapter meeting if you haven't received your pattern packets and you signed up, please let me know. Thanks so much for your help and understanding. May June www.sstdp.com On Wednesday, May 9, I'm having a meeting to start planning our Painting Pal Party that will be in August this year. Sandy Kilgour, Mary Robinson, Barbara Paetzel, Pat Serrano, Char Davis, and Sheila Skinner have signed up to be on the committee. If there is anyone else who would love to be on this committee, please let me know. We need lots of ideas and could use your help. For those new members who do not know what our Painting Pal Party is, it's our summer party. Lunch is served, and we have a really fun time. The cost is $15.00, and that covers the paints, projects and lunch. It’s a day you don't want to miss. Hope to see everyone at our next meeting—have a great month and Happy Spring to everyone, Gwen Palmer page 2 Prudy's Seminar is fast approaching!!! The dates are May 4, 5 & 6. You can paint on any surface 15 inches or larger—square, rectangle, round or oval—the choice is up to you. The cost is $112 for the 3-day seminar ~~~ $25 will hold your place, and I will take payments. Study in Leaves By Prudy Vannier I hope to have the piece that appeared in PaintWorks to show at the next Chapter meeting. DecoAmericana will provide the paint, but you will need your basecoat colors. Give me a call if you have any questions at 363-4231. I hope to have a Seminar meeting scheduled in the next few weeks. Sharon Shuster www.sstdp.com page 3 Community Service with Patty Clark I am pleased to announce that we have purchased a bushel of ball caps to paint for donation to the Caring Place thanks to Pat Gettemeyer. We will have a meeting at my house on Monday, April 2nd, from 10am—3pm to discuss ideas for the ball caps, prep pieces for the next Caring Place class, work on Memory boxes, and discuss committee news. Everyone is welcome. Please R.S.V.P. to me on my home phone 871-9897 or my cell 280-2062 and bring a lunch. I will have desserts, coffee, and ice tea. It would be a great time to bring your memory boxes or any donations you have for our service projects. Bring your basic painting supplies including a large flat brush to prep 5x7 canvas panels and ideas for the ball caps. If you cannot be there for the whole time, try to swing by for a portion of the time. Here are some of the things you could donate to Community Service: paper mache boxes 5" or larger, gently used or new painting aprons, brushes, acrylic paint, graphite paper, or any basic painting supply you might use. The Caring Place is also interested in magazines for collage, boxed teas/bags, individually wrapped snack items and candy, yarn, and beads. I will accept donations at our chapter meeting, and would appreciate a call ahead if you have several items. I would like to thank Carol, Sheila Skinner, Pat G. and Barbara for donations and help in the past month. I have had a few questions about ways to paint and finish Memory Boxes. So here are some ideas. Paint the inside bottom and top of the box with one of the colors you plan to use in the overall design. Or one of my favorite methods is to use a sea sponge and create a 3-color overall pattern. This is very simple and I can demonstrate how to do this at our April 2nd meeting. When picking out a design for the lid/top, look for a children's design, flowers, strokes, animals, nature scenes, whimsical or serious. An "everyday" design is best, that is not a holiday pattern. You could use it for a surface at a chapter meeting when you want to participate in the class, but are not interested in keeping the finished piece yourself. For the box bottom outside, try to think of a simple method that will compliment the top in a few of the same colors. Allow the surfaces to completely dry and then varnish with a semi-gloss or gloss varnish. A spray type will certainly do and is easy for all those corners. Please let this dry well before placing the lid on the bottom so it won't stick. If it has a tight fit, you can rub a bit of furniture polish on with a soft cloth or use paraffin or a clear candle along the edges of the top and bottom where they touch. This should help it to slide off and on easier. I hope I have answered any questions you might have about these boxes. If not just give me a call. You can also email me at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your help. Thank you to everyone who helped with refreshments. Julie your fruit salad was spectacular and a big thank you to Pat Serrano for the Danish and Sheila Hughes for the cupcakes. We are very lucky to have such a variety of refreshments, there was something for everyone. Next month, Mary Robinson and Pat Serrano will bring the treats. Thanks to all members for their continued support of our Chapter. Oh, and there is More News—Ways and Means-“May Spring Happening”!! Instead of a Chinese raffle, we are having a special “Vendor Appreciation” Silent Auction. Yes, this special May auction was created to allow our Members to BID on the items given to us during the Trade Show by our Creative Painting Vendors: Each sheet will start out at 10 AM at $5.00 with a $1.00 increment for each bid on the sheet. The bidding will continue until time is called at 2pm. This will allow for us to tally the winners without disturbing your painting with our May instructor, Sharon. I’m so excited!!!
