BEST OF MISSISSIPPI by melanie m. ward | photography by tristan duplichain Styled and modeled by Kathleen Williams Barnes | Makeup Artist: Alisha Sartin—Maison Weiss of Jackson J U LY | AU GU S T 2 013 113 DINING OUT Best Coffee Cups: An Espresso Café Jackson, Brandon, Flowood, Clinton, and Madison | cupsespressocafe.com A Mississippi favorite for more than two decades, Cups is known for superior coffee. For years they have only served coffee from beans roasted in-house, allowing them to control the quality of their brews. Only premium ingredients are to be expected at Cups, and they take the art of coffee to a new level with offerings like the Brunette, Blondie, Turtle, and Diablo, all made with Ghirardelli chocolates. It’s the perfect place to hide and read a book, meet great friends, or simply breeze by for a cup to go. Strange Brew Coffeehouse, Starkville list The Depot Coffeehouse & Bistro, Hattiesburg Mockingbird Café, Bay St. Louis High Point Coffee, Oxford M Best Fried Chicken Julep Jackson | 601.362.1411 | juleprestaurant.com Selected as one of the Top 10 fried chicken dishes in the United States by USA Today, it isn’t a surprise that Julep tops this list again in 2013. They take a chicken breast and deep fry it to a crispy coating then toss it in their secret honeyrosemary glaze. It might be messy, but it sure is delicious! Woody’s Stop N Shop, Noxapater Two Sisters Kitchen, Jackson list The Veranda, Starkville Mama Hamil’s, Madison M Best Dessert Crescent City Grill— White Chocolate Bread Pudding Hattiesburg | 601.264.0657 crescentcitygrill.net Served with a helping of raspberry coulis and a delectable white chocolate sauce, this housespecialty dessert has long been a mainstay of this Hattiesburg establishment. The homemade bread pudding is filled with threads of imported white chocolate, making for a tempting end to every meal. Robert St. John knows how to craft dishes and menus that tease the senses and entice the palate, and this famed dessert does not disappoint. Amerigo—Tiramisu, Ridgeland Cotton Blues—Mississippi Mud Pie, list Hattiesburg Broadway Deli—Cheesecake, McComb Haute Pig and Hickory Pit—Hershey Bar Pie, Jackson and Madison M Best Cornbread Cock of the Walk Ridgeland and Pocahontas cockofthewalkrestaurant.com Grab a seat at a rustic table and settle in for delicious fried catfish, hush puppies, and fried pickles. However, the best part of the meal comes in a skillet—their fresh and piping hot cornbread, that Granny would appreciate. Owned by Julie and Scott Koestler, Shapley’s promises an evening featuring the best cuts of meat cooked to perfection and an incredible array of side options. Those not in the mood for a ribeye or filet may enjoy one of their many seafood dishes. The cozy atmosphere lends itself to a romantic evening or privacy for a large gathering. Doe’s Eat Place, Greenville The Caboose, McComb list Tico’s, Ridgeland Cappe’s Steakhouse, Starkville M Best Hamburger Mugshots Grill & Bar various locations | mugshotsgrillandbar.com Now with multiple locations in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, this burger joint placed its founding roots in the city of Hattiesburg. Ron Savell and Chris McDonald dreamed of a business that offered a fun atmosphere and good food. Mugshots burgers are well known for being grand in size and taste with amazing buns and a variety of options that provide twists on an old favorite—like Stu’s Magic Mushroom, Trevor’s 1,000 Island Burger, or the Pizza Burger. Brian Michael’s Burger Company, Starkville list Burgers & Blues, Ridgeland Doretha’s, Summit Majestic Burger, Ridgeland M Best Pizza Soulshine Pizza Factory various locations | soulshinepizza.com When owner Chris Sartin began his little pizza shop in Brandon, it was a take-out-only spot. Soulshine’s reputation for amazing pizza, creative options, and quality grew, leading to the Soulshine found today. Now, with locations in Flowood, Ridgeland, Oxford, and Nashville, the little pizza joint around the corner is making a big name for itself. The Dr. John (muffaletta style), The Kitchen Sink (don’t forget a single ingredient), or The Bob Marley (Jamaica inspired) are just three of the many options, along with appetizers like Rasta Nachos, amazing crawfish soup, and salads. Bianchi’s, Hattiesburg Stromboli’s, Starkville list Sal & Mookie’s New York Pizza & Ice Cream Joint, Jackson Pizza Shack, Jackson M Best Barbecue Leatha’s Bar-B-Que Inn Best Mexican Food Oscar’s Mexican Grill & Cantina Hattiesburg | 601.336.7961 The chips are always fresh and the salsa is homemade, and these staples seem to be a favorite of regulars. Authentic Mexican favorites from chili rellenos to fajitas to avocado salad are available, and there are even burgers for the kids. Papito’s Mexican Grill, various locations list El Sombrero, Flowood Sombra, Ridgeland Tortilla Soup Irresistible Mexican, McComb M Best Sweet Tea McAlister’s Deli various locations | mcalistersdeli.com Mississippi-based chain McAlister’s Deli didn’t invent sweet tea, they just made it the best sweet tea in the South. It’s never a surprise that their tea wins year after year. Just thinking about a tall glass of tea with a giant wedge of lemon is enough to entice you to go for a drive and grab a glass. The recipe for their tea is a closely guarded secret, and if we can’t have the recipe, at least we can buy it by the gallon. Try their house made hummus, artichoke hearts, or feta cheese plate to start; then move to their amazing pitas, like the Chicken Yavne with chicken sautéed with onions and barbecue sauce, or the shrimp featuring baby rock shrimp sautéed with onions and bell pepper and wrapped in lettuce and zazeeki sauce. Don’t forget to order something with their famous feta dressing—people have been trying to steal the recipe for years! Mississippi has only a handful of chefs honored as James Beard Foundation Award nominees or winners, and Derek Emerson of Walker’s is one such chef (and he has been selected more than once). When Emerson and his wife Jennifer took over Walker’s Drive-In they stayed true to the restaurant’s long-standing status of fine dining, but kicked it up several notches. With a passion for sourcing local ingredients, an evening at Walker’s showcases Emerson’s culinary talent within a retro chic, intimate setting. Offering everything from foie gras, wood-grilled octopus, and fried lobster skewers to their famous Redfish Anna with Lump Crab Meat, you’ll never leave Walker’s disappointed. This amazing seafood spot first opened its doors in Gulfport’s historic Kremer building in 2009 and has since branched to reach Biloxi, Hattiesburg, and even Sarasota, Florida. True to its name, oysters on the half shell are a house specialty. The freshest oysters are charbroiled over an open flame, served up barbecue style, Rockefeller, or Bienville, and if oysters aren’t for you, then their other seafood dishes are sure to impress—Shrimp and Grits, Seafood Pot Pie, or housemade gumbo. It might be a relatively new restaurant on the dining scene, but it is certain to become a long-standing favorite. This neighborhood Italian favorite is known for authentic Italian dishes like tiramisu, lasagna, and more. With a few eclectic spins on old favorites such as Cheese Fritters (featured in Bon Appetite), Smoked Chicken Ravioli, and piccata with chicken or veal, Amerigo is the place to go for an amazing and a romantic dining experience.
