What is Nytol for?

What you should know about Nytol
Please read this leaflet carefully before
starting to use Nytol. If you have any
questions, or are not sure about
anything, please ask your pharmacist.
Nytol is an antihistamine which causes
sleepiness or drowsiness and is used to
help relieve temporary sleeping
difficulties.
Each Nytol caplet contains 25mg of the
active ingredient Diphenhydramine
Hydrochloride BP.
The caplets also contain: Anhydrous
Lactose, Microcrystalline Cellulose,
Maize Starch, Stearic Acid and Silicon
Dioxide.
This pack contains 16 caplets.
Who makes Nytol
The product licence holder is
Temporary difficulties in getting a
good night’s sleep can be caused by
various problems such as stress, jet lag
or bereavement. In sleep problems of
this type, compared to placebo, Nytol
has been shown to help sufferers to
fall asleep faster, have a longer and
deeper sleep, and awake feeling rested
in the morning.
Before taking Nytol
Do not take Nytol if you have had an
allergic reaction to Diphenhydramine
in the past, or if you have asthma,
narrow angle glaucoma (a form of
raised pressure in the eye), gastric or
intestinal obstruction (due to peptic
ulcer or other causes), enlargement of
the prostate or bladder neck
obstruction.
Nytol is not recommended if you are
pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.
If you are taking antidepressants or
have myasthenia gravis, please talk to
your doctor or pharmacist before
taking Nytol. Nytol should be used
with caution in patients with seizure
disorders.
The effectiveness of Nytol may reduce
with continuous use.
Nytol is intended to produce drowsiness
or sleepiness soon after the dose has
been taken, therefore you should not
drive or operate machinery.
Avoid alcoholic drink whilst using Nytol.
Nytol is not recommended for children
under 16 years of age.
How to use Nytol
Swallow two caplets with water 20
minutes before going to bed. Taking
the caplets in this way will help you to
fall asleep once you are in bed.
Do not take more than the
recommended dose and do not take
extra Nytol caplets if you wake up in
the night.
Please note that if your sleeping
difficulties continuously persist for
more than two weeks, you should
consult your doctor.
and will wear off within about 8 hours
of taking Nytol.
Antihistamines have been reported
rarely to cause abnormal bleeding or
bruising (due to a decrease in the
number of platelets in the blood).
Please tell your pharmacist or doctor if
you notice any of the above and/or any
other unwanted effects.
If Nytol overdose is suspected, contact
your doctor or casualty department.
Storing Nytol
Do not use Nytol after the date shown
on the pack.
Keep Nytol in a dry place.
As with all medicines, store Nytol out
of the reach of children.

After taking Nytol you may experience
dizziness, drowsiness, grogginess,
nervousness, nausea or a dry mouth.
These effects are uncommon but mild
