THE OVERBROOK BROTHERS MONDAY 5 OCTOBER AT 7:30PM It’s Christmas time and Jason (Nathan Harlan) and Todd (Mark Reeb) have assembled, complete with girlfriends at their father’s house. Todd is a tricky character, devious and a bully who’s seemingly always angling for a fight while aspiring writer, Jason, seems like his exact opposite, a genuinely nice guy who’s just trying to get along. Over a typically dysfunctional family dinner, Todd begins fighting with Jason over pointless family issues which eventually grows physical before Todd imparts his secret knowledge as to why Jason was always, in his mind at least, ‘the least favourite’ of the family’s three children, courtesy of a document he’s stumbled upon tucked away in a locked drawer. The brothers soon discover the revelations don’t end there. What ensues is a bizarrely comic road trip across the landscape of the American south where the brothers set out to discover the truth not only about their past but about each other. Director John Bryant scores highly with this funny, original and poignant comedy that will resonate long after you see it. This is due not only to the acting skills of the two leads, Nathan Harlan and Mark Reeb but the skill of writing and direction. Shot stunningly on 35mm, Redland is set during the 1930s Depression era in a tiny outpost in the Redland County, California. A family is struggling to survive in a mountain shack, whilst the daughter conceals her love affair from her zealous father. With starvation and death on the plate, the family have to make painful moral sacrifices which entail dire consequences. Asiel Norton’s debut feature has abandoned the digital school of casual realism and adopted the stunning visuals of 35mm supported by director of photography Zoran Popovic, better known for shooting horror genre films. As a consequence, Redland has a dreamy look, reminiscent of Altman, Malick and Weir, combined with the glow associated to Capra. Norton is quoted as saying he wanted ‘the film itself to look alive, like the film was breathing’, reflected in the soundtrack full of heavy breathing and rustling clothes, repeatedly suggesting arousal or death throes. He has created a challenging film, and with it almost certainty written his own ticket to success. In addition, he is the product of a broken and dysfunctional family and after having suffered years of rejection not only from all he meets but also from those closest to him, he decides to use his savings from years of government disability payouts to go ahead with a risky and dangerous surgery which may or may not cure him. But it seems Sonny’s problems may extend beyond the medical when he becomes entangled with a beautiful and mysterious stranger who seems as broken as himself. Meanwhile post surgery, Sonny’s Tourettes has disappeared completely but so has his ability to heal. Director Ryan Ward, a recent graduate of Toronto’s Ryerson University’s Film Program has pulled off a filmmaking tourde-force by handling nearly every job connected with the film himself. His debut feature marks the arrival of a distinctive new voice in Canadian cinema. SATURDAY 10 OCTOBER AT 9:15PM Daisy is an innocent young woman who finds herself on death row, framed for her mother’s murder. Confined to a women’s prison where she encounters a brutal butch guard and sharptongued fellow inmates, whose spiteful clique has no place for a sweet little blond girl. Berated by the media and the public, Daisy must try to get through every day with the hope that the truth will eventually prevail and she can escape to her former life. Steve Balderson’s latest feature is a startling throwback to the women in prison exploitation films of the 1970s, with a noir twist and Tennessee Williams-style dialogue. It is a breathtaking fusion of genres that, while unashamedly camp and tongue in cheek, never seems less than totally genuine. Balderson’s passion for these genres is shown in every frame, from the brilliant noir cinematography to the authentic portrayals of the classic women in prison archetypes. Rob Kleiner’s jazz score provides a suitably atmospheric and evocative musical accompaniment. Though it owes much to films from the past, it feels fresh and timeless. Featuring cult queens Karen Black and John Waters regular Mink Stole, who are ably supported by a perfectly cast set of sassy vixens, Stuck! is a must for any B-Movie fan and proves to be Balderson’s most assured film yet. When his girlfriend abruptly dumps him, rendering him homeless and he’s turned down by the few friends he asks – it’s time to call in the family. He finds himself begging his Aunt Sharon, an ex-hippie, single mom (Oscar-nominated Melissa Leo,) to let him stay. She agrees but there’s strings attached; her ex-husband has just bailed out of a camping weekend with their teenage son and she’s looking for a replacement. Despite his initial misgivings, self-involved Sam soon finds himself taking his 14-year-old cousin Oliver and his best friend Jake on a camping trip. They set off for the woods where Sam temporarily puts aside his own problems to focus on showing the boys a good time. The boys however resist his awkward attempts at male bonding and a power struggle ensues until an accident occurs and the tone significantly darkens, forcing all concerned to grow up. Mark Duplass, who also stars in our opening night film, Humpday, once again demonstrates his considerable acting ability, while debut director, Craig Johnson keeps things moving in this well- paced, nuanced tale of latent rites of passage. As she heads home to Manhattan on the back of a friend’s motorbike we’re also swept up in the whirlwind of her existence. She’s a free spirit, sexually impulsive, non-judgmental of her friends and seemingly up for any and everything We witness her fumbling sex with chain-smoking boys and her struggles through acting auditions held by directors who take pretentious to a whole new level. Throughout, Shelley is presented as a bundle of contradictions, tough yet weak, confused yet together, obnoxious but divine. While there is no surfeit of plot, there is nonetheless much to delight. Stella Schnabel for a start is old-school ravishing as Shelly Brown. In only her third feature (Basquiat, Before Night Falls) and her first starring role, she gives a flawless performance as the self-involved 20-something. For Ry Russo-Young’s second feature, she skilfully juggles five different shooting formats from 16 and 8mm all the way down to consumer video. The result is a stylish and very intimate film that has been compared to the photographs of Nan Goldin. SEVENTEENTH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 39 BELIEVE SATURDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 6:45PM Believe chronicles comedian Eddie Izzard’s rise to fame from his early influences – losing his mother to cancer at a young age before being sent with his brother to boarding school to his close present day relationship with his supportive father. At school, when he saw what getting into the Cambridge Footlights Revue could do for your career his goal became to follow Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson and try for a place at the university. When that didn’t happen he headed up to the Edinburgh Festival, equipped with nothing but a unicycle and some banter, eventually figuring out how to draw a crowd. He’s been working hard at it ever since. Believe is the mantra of Eddie Izzard – if you want to be a singer, you’ve got to believe you can sing, if you want to be a comedian you’ve got to believe you can be funny. Eddie believes in Eddie and it was this rock solid self-belief that allowed him to perform onstage as a transvestite when it was considered career suicide. When his West End show, Dressed To Kill won critical acclaim he had only himself to thank for booking the theatre. Director Sarah Townsend skilfully combines home video, stills and archival footage in this intimate and edgy portrait of the performer. The furore the documentary (largely unseen) has provoked, focuses around allegations that the film denies the existence of HIV. Brent Leung’s investigation into the history of AIDS/HIV is thought-provoking, raising a number of questions regarding the assessment and treatment of the virus and the immense discrepancies in the categorisation of the disease. Touring the world, interviewing figures in the field, Leung makes a number of disturbing statements. He identifies the historic ‘causes’ of the disease, initially known as GRID (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency). Examining the causes for ‘denialist’ movements, he pins out the inconsistencies in the initial researches, and the fatality of the primary medications for the disease, supported by balanced contributions from its contributors. Most interestingly, Leung’s attempt at exploring the theories behind claims HIV does not cause AIDS, show an underlying issue in so far as the scientific world remain divided over the virus and is a fascinating insight into the denialist movement. Known as the ‘8mm Mozarts’ their wacky, hilarious and sensitive films inspired an era of filmmakers and helped shape the New York Avant Garde and underground film scene of the ’60s. Growing up in the Bronx in the 1950s, the young pair adopted a passion for low-budget filmmaking, compulsively copying Hollywood melodramas by borrowing their aunt’s 8mm homemovie camera and using their friends as cast, or neighbourhood as film set. The intrinsic ability to create human films, combined with their flair for the surreal and comedic, contributed to noticeably different and ground-breaking films. Having taught at the San Francisco Art Institute since the ’80s, George Kuchar’s film student Jennifer M Kroot, examines the history of the two brothers, interviewing their admirers, their history and intertwines clips from their ‘greatest hits’. It Came From Kuchar is a compelling and affectionate account, with a focus on the documentation of the latest class production; an attempt to make an over-the-top ‘monster picture’. A mesmerising and touching tale, Kroot’s portrait is an engaging and emotional look at these inspiring filmmakers. Jeff Turner is a 50-year-old man who has professed his love for the singer since 1988, appearing at almost every concert and fan convention. Kelly McCormick is a transgendered person who claims to have been best friends with Tiffany since they were both teenagers. Following both of them individually through their daily lives and their attendance of Tiffany-related events, director Sean Donnelly explores the psyches of this twisted pair; investigating their obsessive motivations and their own perception of their place within her life. Donnelly’s documentary could easily be labeled as a real-life Misery, and indeed in parts there are Kathy Bates-esque qualities to both Jeff and Kelly, though the film isn’t simply concerned with the creepiness of its lonely subjects and at times it’s difficult not to sympathise with them. The fact that Tiffany herself is now playing local family festivals rather than stadium gigs adds a further dimension to the film, as her own dwindling fanbase could be seen to be somewhat reliant on people like this to maintain her own sense of celebrity. When documentary filmmaker Tony Zierra began following a group of college friends who lived together under the same roof, tracking their hopes of making it as Hollywood actors, he could never have predicted the story that eventually unfolded. The roommates were Brad Rowe, Chad Lindberg, Wes Bentley and Greg Fawcett. As the cameras begin rolling, the careers of Rowe, Lindberg and Bentley rise at an astronomical rate, as they gain the attention of the film media and acting jobs become more and more frequent, while Fawcett is the one left behind, struggling to get auditions while his friends rapidly become superstars. My Big Break is a fascinating film examining the psyche of those on the brink of success. Made over a ten-year period, and previously blocked from release, it offers an insight into the realities facing struggling actors and the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. Bentley’s story is particularly interesting as he became the most successful of all with American Beauty, yet is the most affected by his own fame, while Fawcett’s decent to near-insanity is truly gripping. The Narcotic Farm was a beautiful residence with sweeping lawns and a vast garden, appearing like an exclusive country club to those being admitted. Following the history of the Narcotic Farm from the 1930s to its demise in the 1970s, it was the core of the drug research centre as well as a social gathering for jazz musicians, street hustlers, and drugstore junkies. From what was a sanctuary to those being beaten on the streets, the Narcotic Farm soon became a corrupt testing ground for scientists to treat addicts like their very own guinea pigs. The Narcotic Farm gives first hand accounts of patients who have suffered the indignity of being falsely treated by doctors. The government is exposed as funding novel experiments involving drugs with volunteer inmates then rewarding them with heroin at a department in the farm called ‘The Bank’. Startling pictures, revealing film clips, and newspapers and government documents divulge the travesties. The stories of actual patients, doctors, and guards disclose the disquieting truths that went on behind the quaint country doors. A sub-contractor for the Fucox cement haulage company, Kaikura works a staggering 552 hours a month without benefits nor sick pay, a regime that barely affords him time to wash or eat and which is driving him towards an early grave. Following a fatal accident involving another driver and two innocent bystanders, refused sick leave by his employers, Kaikura is encouraged to join his workers union, an act that pits him against his company and their ‘associate’ Mitsuo Kudo, a dubious character with a snarl, tattoos, and an entourage of hired thugs. A Normal Life Please examines the repercussions of the Japanese government’s steps to relax labour regulations since the 1990s under the pretext of increased competition in the global market. As a result, there are now more than 16 million irregular workers in Japan employed under rapidly worsening conditions. Most have no idea of the basic rights available to them. Filmmakers Patrick Shen (director) and Greg Bennick (producer) follow up from the highly acclaimed Flight from Death: The Quest for Immortality. What seems most fascinating with their work is the incredible subtlety with which they approach their subjects. Masterfully edited, shot and orchestrated, The Philosopher Kings is a captivating piece that challenges our basic perceptions and prejudices, but also, and most unexpectedly, delivers a revealing insight into a range of stories, each and everyone gripping and contagiously mouth-watering. One janitor, for instance, discusses his story of being left for dead in Vietnam, whilst others recall their failed relationships. Making a point of emphasising that the custodians are rarely considered, Shen’s film offers something more enlightening than just a simple account of tales. Through revealing insights into the experiences of five custodians, we discover workers who are not only comfortable in the roles, but tremendously happy, and the Philosopher Kings doesn’t only teach us about ill-perceptions, but about how we could live our own lives. In an age of documentaries that challenge social mores, Planeat is a compelling investigation. British filmmakers Shelley Davies and Or Shlomi conduct their research into an emerging pattern in dietary related illnesses, one which suggests that dairy products may be a cause of prevalent diseases or illnesses. Through a gastronomic enquiry, and through interviewing figures within the scientific, academic, farming and catering industries, one corroboration seems evident, all agreeing that dietary practises and beliefs are generally flawed. One scientist demonstrates how increasing and decreasing the animal protein content in lab rats could turn on and off cancers. Then there’s the ‘detox’ clinics on the US East Coast who only offer raw fruit and vegetable regimes and whose customers all share one thing in common: the inexplicable cure to a string of potentially life threatening diseases. Planeat touches on a number of baffling and original questions, and it reflects on the backlash amongst conservative agricultural economies of America, whose food production impact may be more devastating than just on the human. He wanted a game that put players in the minds of the shooters and went on to make Super Columbine RPG, where the gamer plays Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, re-enacting the massacre and their suicide before pitting them post death against creatures from the video game, Doom. In 2005, Ledonne made the game freely available on the internet where, despite little or no promotion, it instantly attracted major media attention. Predictably, it garnered much criticism for its subject matter but the game also had its supporters. As a way of defending the game, Ledonne went on to make this documentary where he gives his reasons for creating the game, alongside discussions of broader issues such as the media’s demonisation of video games, their potential value as an artistic medium and issues such as censorship and public responsibility. He also includes an interview with Slamdance director, Peter Baxter who defends his decision to pull the game from the festival’s Guerrilla Gamemaker competition. He’s directed and produced over 100 features, most of which unbelievably, actually make money. Popatopolis follows one of B-movie’s most notable figures as he embarks on a mission to shoot his latest edition, ‘The Witches Of Breastwick’, in only three days. Casting his lead Z-list porn actress in a car park, it’s apparent from the start that his techniques are somewhat unique. Then, arriving at the crew and cast accommodation, there are no towels – and the actors, to say the least, aren’t impressed. Then there’s the perpetual bulging breasts, ‘Breasts are the cheapest special effects in this business,’ Jim confesses. A 25-year veteran of the Hollywood B-movies, Popatopolis asks from other leading B-movie directors including Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Roger Corman what they think of Wynorski, and it seems everybody corroborates in their opinion; that despite his eccentricities, he always gets a movie complete on time and on budget, something even his overstretched cast and crew seem to respect. It might go a little far to call him a genius, but there’s something deliciously tongue-in-cheek and exciting about the way he shoots and the commitment that goes into making a commercial feature film in less than a handful of days. Special When Lit, directed by ex-computer graphics and desktop video expert Brett Sullivan, recounts the history of the game, from its ban by the American government in the 1940s, to its domination of the entertainment industry and its near demise to the new era of video games. It also recounts the stories of its hardcore fans, pinball addicts. Masterfully shot, Sullivan brings out something nostalgic in his documentary, it seems at times like an emotional and sensitive area, with pinball’s fans describing of the game like a relationship, their faces lighting up as if they were recounting their first kiss. Special When Lit tells another message, drawing parrallels with the consumerist and entertainment systems of today’s youth, often obsessed with Sega, Playstation and Nintendo video games, encapsulated within less social confines. Showing an alternative love for a game which brought out a wealth of memories for many generations, Special When Lit is an absorbing watch, retracing the passion of pinball followers, but also the sad dissolution of, what could be described as a certain way of living and playing. It can be argued that he was at his musical peak when he died in unusual circumstances in Amsterdam on 13 May 1988. One of the many things people find fascinating about Chet Baker is his ‘mysterious death’. He fell from the open window of his hotel room, hitting his head on the concrete sidewalk two floors below. Perhaps the only thing that makes it mysterious is that no-one witnessed it. There appeared to be no struggle in his hotel room, the door was locked from the inside and there was no planned suicide. Perhaps it was just an unfortunate accident in that he simply fell off out of the window. These are imaginary elusive fragments of a fading icon, featuring his signature song ‘My Funny Valentine’. She reminisces with husband Jay about their extraordinary lives and encounters that shaped her as a writer. Fran Landesman, the acclaimed lyricist and poet, grew up in the Upper West Side of New York during the turbulent yet wild early days of bebop. She began her career in fashion and hung out in Greenwich Village. It was there that she met her future husband Jay Landesman, who was swiftly becoming the cultural pioneer and bohemian trendsetter for the Beat Movement of the ’40s and ’50s. He was the publisher and editor in New York of the provocative Neurotica magazine – the first to print the works of Kerouac and Ginsberg. Fran was equally a pioneer. As a lyricist she translated TS Eliot’s phrase ‘April is the cruelest month’ into hip language so that ‘Spring can really hang you up the most’. They moved to St Louis and opened what has become the hippest night spot in the midwest – the legendary Crystal Palace. This place inspired some of the most innovative cabaret and comedy performers of its era, including performers such as Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen. This was a successful venture, attracting big showbusiness names while still producing avant garde theatre. They set the scene. In 1964 the Landesmans moved to London, where they seamlessly happened to be with the in-crowd as the swinging scene took flight. Fran continued to write lyrics for well known musicians with an emphasis on jazz and started to write poetry, creating a tough and witty ironic expression of contemporary love and life. She is still the poet laureate of lovers and losers – her songs are the secret diaries of the desperate and the decadent.
