AUTUMN ADAGIO [FUWAKU NO ADAGIO]
FRIDAY 8 OCTOBER AT 9:30PM
A nun going through her menopause might sound like the
punch-line of a joke you wouldn’t tell your mum, but Tsuki Inoue’s
disarmingly beautiful film Autumn Adagio takes what could have
so easily been a premise ripe for exploitation and makes from it a
profoundly moving and utterly restrained masterpiece.
Mariko, who is first seen absent-mindedly plucking the stamen
from a bouquet of lilies, lives a cloistered, routine life. One day,
confused by the way she is feeling, she takes a leap of faith and
volunteers to play the piano for the local ballet school. Whilst
working she becomes entranced by the instructor’s graceful
movements in a scene that is both gently surreal and quietly
erotic. Although she plays well, the instructor tries to encourage
her to put more of herself into the music. Moriko, who has spent
her life repressing her sexuality and emotions, decides to let them
out for a short time before they are lost forever and we can’t help
but be swept along with her new enthusiasm.
From then on the film is by turns disturbing, tragic and uplifting
as she learns to reengage with the world. More and more we
start to see her without her habit, and the change is striking. The
tension between religion and sexuality has been explored in many
films, but rarely has it been handled with such sensitivity. DB

BOYS ON THE RUN [BOIZU ON ZA RAN]
FRIDAY 1 OCTOBER AT 6:30PM
Boys on the Run stars Kazunobu Mineta (frontman for punk-rock
band Ging Nang Boyz) as Tanishi, a 29-year-old virgin stuck in
a menial position at a failing company. Tanishi’s idle existence
of porn and fantasizing is thrown into disarray after a night of
drunken flirtation with his co-worker Chiharu.
Despite Tanishi’s repeated acts of self-sabotage it seems that
nothing can drive Chiharu away. But when Aoyama, star salesman
of a rival capsule company becomes a rival Tanishi vows to fight
him for Chiharu’s honour. Playing a bit like the Japanese take
on 40 Year Old Virgin, Boys on the Run is based on a manga by
Kengo Hanazawa and is the debut feature film from successful
theatre director Daisuke Miura. Chock full of deliciously awkward
moments, the film also has a lot more depth than the average
sex comedy, asking us to consider how and when exactly a boy
becomes a man. On the run from the ever-looming threat of
responsibility and maturity, Tanishi tries to explore his masculinity
through sex and after that fails, through violence. Boys on the
Run is both a hilariously demented sex comedy and a surprisingly
touching almost-love story that repeatedly and ingeniously turns
underdog clichés on their head. CP

HI! OTSUKA DRUGSTORE
SUNDAY 10 OCTOBER AT 1:45PM
The cranky Otsuka presides over the shambolic drug store of
the title like a griffon in her den, scaring off customers with her
grating manner and flatulence. Either that or she can be found
sleeping behind the counter. No wonder she’s being robbed left
right and centre and it certainly doesn’t help that she seems
unable to tell a customer from a burglar. But when a girl drops by
the store every morning to buy a different coloured nail varnish
the older woman recognises this as an attempt to attract a crush,
and against her worse nature decides to help.
Through Nakasaku’s attempts to land the object of her desires,
Otsuka seeks to relive her own past and in particular the failed
high-school romance that saw her betrayed by her match-maker
twenty five years ago. As her past comes flooding back her stern
demeanour begins to melt and her advice to Nakasaku softens.
Told in vivid over-saturated flash backs, with over-the-top
manga sensibility and wonky framing that fits the film’s sultry
central character perfectly, debutant director Yuu Katsumata
none-the-less brings the film to a surprisingly moving finale. This
is a promising early work that suggests Katsumata may soon be
making endearingly quirky comedies along with the best of the
new wave of Japanese indie directors. AW

LOST AND FOUND
WEDNESDAY 6 OCTOBER AT 5:15PM
In a non-descript Japanese train station several random
characters pass one another by, each struggling with life in some
way: a European man retraces the steps of his grandfather in
postwar Japan, a girl struggles with the urge to abandon her
child, a blind woman photographs the world that she will never
see, and a disgraced business man teeters on the platform’s
edge. These characters all share the fact that they have lost
something and their stories revolve around Mr Togashi who runs
the station’s lost property office.
Unlike many Japanese indie films its eccentric characters
remain very believable and empathetic as they are brought
together and broken apart by a series of lost objects, each of
which is given tremendous emotional weight thanks to Nobuyuki
Miyaki’s subtle plotting and gentle camera work. This seems
to evoke Mr Togashi’s own philosophy as he chides his young
associate for dismissing some of the items he cares for as trash,
saying: ‘that’s not for you to decide. If it comes in here then it
belongs to someone. It’s important.’ Miyaki’s self-assured debut
feature is a charming drama of fleeting encounters, which fans
of Shunji Iwai or Edward Yang will love. Despite its subtlety its
themes will resonate long after you leave the cinema. DB

LOST GIRL
SUNDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 8:15PM
A carefully observed depiction of mental illness with brilliantly
nuanced central performances; Lost Girl’s restrained, nonjudgemental tone makes it a powerful experience.
Ryoko Tanabe was once a successful chef who ran a
restaurant with her partner Daichi, but we first meet her in the
film wrapped in blankets in her tiny bedroom, surrounded by junk
food packets and vomiting into a bucket. She has bulimia.
The film hints at various causes: perhaps it was triggered
by the incident in which she accidentally poisons a customer,
perhaps she’s motivated by a perverse sense of rebellion, or
maybe it’s because she can’t have children? These things are
never easily explained and the film is all the better for not trying
to prescribe a solution or give a reason. For his part Daichi can’t
accept the person she has become, and tries everything to get
her back; begging her to eat, using psychological tactics and
eventually brute force born out of desperation.
Lost Girl is an acutely aware and sensitive portrayal of
depression from first time director Daisuke Yamaoka, and the
fantastically subtle performances from the two leads push
the film even further. DB

LUNAR CHILD [RUNA NO KODOMO]
THURSDAY 7 OCTOBER AT 5:45PM
Stark, brutally honest and beautifully shot, Lunar Child offers a
observation upon the fleeting and transient experiences of three
women who seek love, but cannot grasp it tightly enough. Their
barren relationships contain only a little hope; each is seeking
meaning in relationships that are ultimately doomed. ‘Her Story’
concerns a young woman and an older man who spend the night
together by chance, sharing their pain and misery with each
other: he is terminally ill with cancer, she is traumatized by a
recent abortion and the crumbling relationship with her boyfriend.
Mizuki is distancing herself from her girlfriend, Maho; she
already has doubts about their two-week-old relationship. Having
grown up with liberal attitudes towards sex, she is beginning to
see love-making as a meaningless and empty pastime.
Hikari is a writer and the breadwinner of the household,
supporting her unemployed and emotionally dependent husband.
When her dreams are dashed she is forced to face the reality
of her life and relationships. Her attempts to rekindle her
marriage, however, cast a gentle glow of hope on all the female
protagonists. LC

PURE ASIA
SATURDAY 2 OCTOBER AT 5:45PM
Pure Asia follows a nameless Japanese teenager at a time
of extreme tension between Japan and North Korea. When a
beautiful girl saves him from a mugging she drags him away and
onto a train. Hoping to meet her again, the next day he waits
outside the station to see if she comes past. When she does, he
is shocked to see that she is in Korean dress. As the boy stands
helplessly by she is surrounded by a group of Japanese students
who bully and eventually kill her.
After watching the funeral from afar, the boy meets the
girl’s sister, almost identical to her in appearance but the polar
opposite in attitude. Hell-bent on revenge against just about
everyone, she drags the boy on a journey of vicious destruction
and blind vengeance.
The director has enticed fresh, invigorating performances from
the actors and puts equal skill into the camera-work. Shot in stark
black and white, Pure Asia is a road movie of grief in all its guises.
Shocking, affecting and lent extra strength by it its political
resonance, it’s a morality tale that shows us that the greatest evil
of all comes from those who stand by and do nothing. CP

FRIDAY 8 OCTOBER AT 7:15PM
Yuichiro, played with just the right amount of ennui by Watanabe
Kazushi, is twenty six and lives with his mother, who wants him
to follow in the footsteps of his recently deceased father and go
to medical school. The lazy, feckless Yuichiro, however, dreams
of becoming a director – not that he does much to move either
career forward besides befriending the terminally ill filmmaker
Fujimori. Instead, desperate to pay off the massive debt he’s
incurred with loan shark Nanbaru, Yuichiro is eventually forced
into becoming a test subject in a dangerous experiment.
Fans of maverick Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa will
find much to appreciate here; there’s the same atmosphere
of impending doom, the plot driven by hidden motivations and
surreal events, the theme of mortality, and even the presence
of a mysterious centuries old tree. The film also shares with
Kurosawa’s masterpiece Pulse the sense of a doomed generation
with its focus on young protagonists.
The film’s events, unremarkable and surreal alike, unfold
against the backdrop of a major radiation leak from a nearby
power plant – a suitable atmosphere for a cursed generation
attempting to live in the nuclear age. DB

YELLOW KID
SATURDAY 9 OCTOBER AT 12:45PM
Tamura, inspired by the heroic figure of Yellow Kid in Iga Taro’s
manga, decides to become a boxer and thus a hero himself. But
the characters at the local gym are far from heroes; most are
nothing more than petty thugs headed by aggressive punk kid
Enomoto. When Taro decides to write a sequel to Yellow Kid
he bases his character on Tamura, thus completing the cycle of
influence and inspiration.
Tamura does his best to fit Taro’s new character whilst
squaring up to the violent thugs at the gym and trying to fit into
a repressive culture. Pushed too far by Enomoto and society
as a whole, Tamura begins taking his comic book persona too
seriously as he struggles to make sense of the world around him.
A world of run down boxing clubs, violent loan sharks, grizzled
coaches and one young boxer with a dream. You could be
forgiven for thinking that you’ve seen this one before. Add a
manga artist searching for a boxer on which to base his latest
comic and outbursts of exaggerated violence and you have
a recipe that is uniquely Japanese. Yellow Kid is an intense
viewing, trading thick and fast comic book imagery with stark,
kinetic cinematography that marks the very best of Japanese
independent film. CB

YURIKO’S AROMA
SATURDAY 9 OCTOBER AT 8:45PM
Yuriko is a mid-thirties aromatherapy masseuse who heals her
customers with a sensitive touch and perfectly chosen aromas.
She becomes troubled however, when she catches the scent of
her boss’ nephew, the hormonal teenager Tetsuya. An odd love
triangle develops as Yuriko becomes fixated on Tetsuya and a
female client begins to reveal her crush on Yuriko. Wonderfully
restrained direction follows Yuriko’s actions and decisions as she
gives into her fetish and develops and awkward relationship with
the much younger Tetsuya.
Smell is a difficult sense to capture on camera but
director Kota Yoshida succeeds with the help of a committed
performance from lead actress Noriko Eguchi. Focused close-ups
and delicate camera movement capture the surreally intimate
scenes between Tetsuya and Yuriko.
The Japanese film industry has a long history of sex cinema
– ‘pink film.’ The success of Yuriko’s Aroma can be found in the
way it tackles those issues without the pornographic content.
Here then is a meditation on fetish, and the consequences of
finally giving into it. Erotic but never explicit, it’ subjects lie outside
the mainstream; rather it celebrates human sexual diversity and
the satisfaction of desire. JB

John is a mild-mannered insurance executive who harbors a
dark secret. His wife, Anna, on the other hand, believes she’s
married to Mr. Normal with whom she fully expects to live out
her version of the American Dream. John’s Mom believes she’s

It comes as a shock to both when he abruptly vanishes. Panicstricken, Anna eventually tracks him down to an anonymous hotel

her husband – in a closet – with a chainsaw. John’s secret has
unraveled to reveal a man who is preparing to act on a burning
desire – to rid himself of his arms and replace them with nubbins.
A quirky dark comedy, the film boasts great performances
all round. Daniel London, in particular is never less than fully
believable as John, the low-key eccentric who suffers from the
real life condition – Body Integrity Identity Disorder – in which
the sufferer believes that in order to feel whole he must have

FLOODING WITH LOVE FOR THE KID
TUESDAY 5 OCTOBER AT 6:45PM
Flooding with Love for the Kid is debut director Zachary
Oberzan’s bold retelling of the story of Rambo, made famous by
Sylvester Stallone and based on the novel, First Blood by David
Morrell. But that’s just about where any similarity ends.
Oberzan’s one-man epic was shot on a sub-shoestring budget
of 96 dollars. All of the action takes place in the directors’ 200
square foot Manhattan apartment with Oberzan acting out all
the roles himself. Inspired by Rambo’s zeal, he also acted as
his own one-man crew. The director embraces his self-imposed
limitations to go on to tell a story that despite some dodgy props
and locations – a paper cup becomes a megaphone, his bathtub
serves as a river, his fireplace and a couple of twigs denote a
forest – is still riveting.
An extreme low budget film like you’ve never seen before,
Flooding with Love for the Kid has received glowing reviews
following its premiere showcase at the Anthology Film Archive in
NY, described as an ‘outsider-cinema mastepiece’ (Time Out) with
The Guardian claiming it was an ‘assault on the notion that high
production values are necessary for compelling storytelling’. SB

revealing more about their fractured relationships and the
unspoken connections between them. When the young English

her and Alex begins to be revealed.
As the film develops the fault lines in every relationship are
explored; Nick has left his wife for another woman but now finds

the presence of Helena.

INCREDIBLY SMALL
SATURDAY 9 OCTOBER AT 6:45PM & SUNDAY 10 OCTOBER AT 10:30AM
Dean Peterson’s Minneapolis set feature debut describes itself as
a 300 square foot love story; the setting may be incredibly small
but it packs an incredibly big punch. When Emir and Anne move
into their new apartment their fledging relationship immediately
comes under strain. Anne is far from impressed with the studio
flat’s ‘rustic charm’ (which seems to be another word for rising
damp) and things only get worse when her parents arrive and
conclude that their daughter has moved in with an imbecile.
But if Emir is an eternal man-child then Anne is overbearing
and idealistic, and the audience’s sympathy is skilfully bounced
back and forth thanks to Peterson’s incredibly sharp script, which
draws the utmost amount of pathos and humour.
The cracks in the young couple’s relationship are fully prised
open when their neighbour Tom, a Seinfield-esque college
professor with wonderful hair, takes a shine to Anne and throws
all of Emir’s faults into stark relief, even more so when his old
friend Brian turns up on his doorstep with stories of how much
dope ‘Eagle’ used to smoke in high school. DB

will become of the child, tensions in their relationship become
apparent. With the baby just days away Rob desperately tries to
hold onto his holiday, manage his broody wife, plan a future for
his daughter and close a crucial business deal.
This is a classic American indie film, made with a small crew
and fantastic locations. The interior of the modern lakeside house
is beautifully shot, interspersed with some stunning photography
of the lake and its surrounds. The script is wonderfully
constructed; every character brings a different perspective on life
and love to the film and they clash in wonderfully delicate, subtle
ways. Smart, funny and tender, the dialogue is brought to life by
nuanced performances from all the actors. The Lake Effect is a
film about growing up and taking responsibility for your actions.

of Hate, but his plans are disrupted when Paul and Diane arrive.
Rudy decides to remain hidden and becomes something of
a ghostly presence in the house, leaving only occasional clues
– the unflushed toilet – to his presence. As the film turns into a
game of cat-and-mouse the two brothers rivalry turns vicious and
the tone is expertly balanced between comedy and thriller.

Peyton and his girlfriend decide to take their shot at the big

and if there’s anywhere they’re going to make it big, it’s Los
Angeles. However innocent their intentions are when they arrive
in LA, they become firmly ensconced in a circle of friends that
love nothing more than losing themselves in a serious drug party.
They are immersed in a world of indulgence and intimacy that
puts themselves, and their relationship, through the ringer.
On Holiday is a whirlwind of personalities and interactions
filmed from party to party as the couple interacts and evolves
with their new big city friends. On Holiday is instead all about the
private lives of the couple and how they unwittingly adapt to their
ever-complicated new social scene.
Focusing on Peyton the film maps his efforts and failures as
he navigates this complex new world of experiences that he is
completely unequipped to deal with. Amidst the lunatic antics of
their Los Angeles parties, however is a close examination of two

TREASURE OF THE BLACK JAGUAR
SATURDAY 2 OCTOBER AT 8PM & SATURDAY 9 OCTOBER AT 7PM
Two best friends have a great idea – a get-rich-quick scheme
which promises great returns. They quickly escape the grasp
of their mother and girlfriend but land themselves behind bars,
almost as quickly as they left. In the Mexican jail a man offers
them two options, to stay there ‘and get arse-raped’, or escape
with him on condition they help him find a secret treasure, the
Black Jaguar. It quickly emerges that they might end up paying
the ultimate price for their multi-million dollar cut.
The cast at this film’s core seem destined for big things, with
brooding Cameron van Hoy co-starring as one of the boys after
a fast-buck, but also co-producing the film and co-writing the
screenplay with director Mike Bruce. Michael Drayer – who
plays the other half of the calamitous pair – is an adept comic
companion to Van Hoy’s straight man role. Panoramic portrayals
of desert endurance are interspersed with visual and verbal
humour that flows thick and fast – as do lashings of blood,
ensuring the boys’ classic plaid shirts are thoroughly smattered
and sullied by their desert adventure. Sped-up sequences,
innovative camera angles and bold saturated colours combine
to immerse the viewer in this dizzying escapade, culminating
in a film that is funny, trendy and laced with gore. AM

VACATION!
SUNDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 8PM
Returning to Raindance a year on from Modern Love Is
Automatic, maverick director/writer Zach Clark takes us on a wild
ride to the seaside accompanied by four hormonal young women.
Inviting her three old college friends on a week long vacation,
Sugar arranges to take over a friend’s beach house in North
Carolina. Lorelei is still hung up on her ex-boyfriend Dave, whilst
glamazon Dee-Dee is caught up in a lesbian affair. Meanwhile
Donna dodges all advances in order to remain single.
Spending their days dressing up in blonde wigs to go shopping,
getting high and hanging out with the local drug dealer, the
breezy tone is abrubtly darkened when a girl is found dead after
a night of partying.
Clark reprises the talents of his last film, Maggie Ross in the
role of Sugar and the statuesque Melodie Sisk as Dee-Dee.
Trieste Kelly Dunn, recently voted one of 25 new faces to watch
by Filmmaker magazine, plays Donna and Lydia Hyslop appears
as Lorelei. Clark has developed his own retro style which, during
the acid sequence, is doused with saturated colour for an almost
hyper-realist aesthetic. He also collides digital images with those
of the girls’ camcorders to create a breezy post punk feel that

18TH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
CAMP VICTORY, AFGHANISTAN
SUNDAY 10 OCTOBER AT 12:15PM
Shot over a three year period and extracted from 300 hours of
footage, this documentary is about the Afghan officers tasked
with creating a national army and the American soldiers there to
mentor them. This process is the heart of the US exit strategy:
a functioning army must be set up in order for US troops to
withdraw. The enormity of this task is made clear; most who sign
up are impoverished and illiterate, having grown up in refugee
camps and their motives are sometimes dubious. Problems arise
as the Americans lose patience when some soldiers co-operate
with the Taliban and the Afghans are frustrated by high turnover
and lack of stability from their advisors.
The film centres on the battle-weathered General Sayar, who
has been a soldier in the Afghan army since age 13. Wary of the
Americans his trust is eventually won by the sincere Colonel
Shute. It is inspiring to see these men from such different
backgrounds learning to work together and, despite cultural and
language barriers, forming a strong emotional bond.
This is an insightful and important documentary which
refreshingly avoids sensationalism. Instead it gives an intimate,
unbiased portrayal of the everyday realities of the American effort
in Afghanistan, from the tragic to the mundane. SE

THE CUTTING TRADITION: INSIGHTS INTO FEMALE GENITAL…
WEDNESDAY 6 OCTOBER AT 6PM
The cutting tradition focuses on the issue of female genital
mutilation (FGM), a custom, which appears barbaric to the
westernised eye but it is still practiced in many African and some
Middle-Eastern countries. Despite being illegal in many of the
places where it is practiced, FGM continues to be administered to
very young women, often even little girls. In the majority of cases
it exposes them to medical and psychological problems from
which they sometimes never recover. This film is a balance and
non-judgmental exploration into the reason for FGM which find
their roots in religious cultural and historical grounds.
Natives of Burkina Faso, Egypt and Ethiopia express their
opinions and points of view both in support and against FGM.
Their authentic, undiluted statements highlight the difficulty of
resolving an issue that is deeply rooted in their cultures.
Commissioned by the International Federation of Gynecology
and Obstetrics, The Cutting Tradition is narrated by Meryl Streep,
with footage of traditional wedding celebrations and a shocking
scene which follows a young girl experiencing FGM. Streep’s
narration takes us through this journey in a delicate and nonjudgmental way which, coupled with the astounding direction
by Nancy Durell McKenna and John Howarth. MP

ROUGE CIEL
SUNDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 3.45PM
French artist Dubuffet coined the term ‘art brut’ to describe
works created outside of the conventional parameters of the art
world. Established in the 1940s art brut was created by those who
rejected preconceptions of art and a number of its contributors
were clinically insane asylum inhabitants. The term primarily
referred to the manner in which the pieces were created, through
impulses, rather than from visual or stylistic guidelines.
Among those whose contributions are explored, we learn
about Fernand Desmoulin, the early 20th century French artist
who drew in darkness, believing his hands were guided by spirits
while producing his works. Elsewhere and in the present day,
American-born George Widener has memorized events from the
last 2,000 years, and uses these memories to predict the future,
committing his visions to ‘magic squares’ on a paper tablecloth.
Director Bruno Decharme has an absolute passion for his
subject, and he has approached this exploration of art brut in a
highly imaginative fashion. Rouge Ciel provides an informative
and educational analysis throughout. This film will be certain to
appeal to art brut fans but it is also a celebration of humanity and
the artistic impulse and that makes it accessible to all. CP

THE SOUND OF MUMBAI: A MUSICAL
THURSDAY 30 SEPTEMBER AT 5:30PM
The opening shot of the sprawling, cramped Mumbai slums
accompanied by the cheerful voice of Julie Andrews is the kind
of contradiction that Sarah McCarthy’s insightful documentary
is built around. Following a group of slum children rehearsing for
a performance of the world’s favourite musical at the prestigious
and affluent National Centre of the Performing Arts she skilfully
juxtaposes the worlds of Mumbai’s wealthier class with that
of its famous slums.
McCarthy focuses her film on one boy, Ashish, upon whom
Slumdog Millionaire’s protagonist could so easily have been
based. Ashish dreams of a wealthy patron and perhaps even
a beautiful upper-class girlfriend after he wins the glory of a few
solo lines. His family make no secret of their hope that Ashish,
with his command of English and new exposure, can be the
one to take them out of the slums. Ultimately India’s rigid social
structure isn’t going to be overthrown overnight by a musical but
for those few involved it represents a precious opportunity to just
maybe better their lives. McCarthy is careful not to let the film
become swept away in their optimism however, she is always
aware of the distance between dreams and reality. DB

STOLEN
SATURDAY 9 OCTOBER AT 4:45PM
Every week the UN organises family reunions in refugee camps
across Western Sahara. Fetim is a young mother of three, who
filmmakers Daniel Fallshaw and Violeta Ashawa document as
she attempts to organise the week long reunion with her mother.
In what starts as a feel-good family reunion, she discusses life in
the camps and reluctantly delves into a forbidden subject, one of
modern day slavery, and the enslavement of the black community.
The camera quickly turns on the two Australian filmmakers as
they try to discuss the issue with the UN refugee agency and
soon afterwards are pursued by the Polisario Front police who
scour the camp in the search of their hidden tapes.
Fascinatingly shot, what started as a simple reunion turns into
a story which sees the filmmakers escaping the country and
being followed into France. What makes Stolen an even more
important document, are the issues which ensued following
the film’s premiere in Sydney, with the Polisario flying out the
protagonists to protest against the filmmakers and state they had
been forced to lie. Since then Polisario Front have tried to block
screenings of the film, with several festivals dropping it as a result
and most recently a festival in Norway was taken to court over
the right to screen the film. XR

THERE ONCE WAS AN ISLAND
SUNDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 5:45PM
There Once Was an Island follows the small community that
inhabits the tiny Polynesian island of Takuu, and their personal
engagement with the effects of rising sea levels. Only half a
kilometre long and one metre above sea level, Takuu’s salty,
poisoned gardens and rapid coastal erosion are the first signs of
sea-level rise, which threatens to destroy this community and its
culture. After a bad tidal flood, the community are torn between
resettling to the mainland of Bougainville, or to stay, and face an
uncertain future, possibly watching their paradise disintegrate.
Life on the mainland is very different from the Takuu and
adapting to a cash economy will irreversibly change their culture.
Briar March’s stunningly poignant eco-documentary follows the
decisions of Taaku’s inhabitants. Some, like Teloo, are intent on
staying; hoping to salvage their culture. Others, like Satty, believe
the best decision is to move to the mainland, aware of the island’s
dwindling ability to sustain life. Whether you are an avid believer
or a sceptic about the effects of global warming becomes a moot
point – this is a film about a society struggling to decide its future
when it meets the implacable force of nature. LC

THIS WAY OF LIFE
FRIDAY 1 OCTOBER AT 6:15PM
A unique and intimate portrait of family solidarity, This Way of
Life follows the Maori Karena family as they rise to meet the
challenges threatening to destabilize their rural lifestyle. Shot
over four years, the documentary charts one couple’s refusal to
concede their values to seemingly insurmountable troubles. With
six children and fifty horses, Peter and Colleen somehow remain
philosophical through arson, miscarriage and theft, dedicating
themselves to the idyllic and isolated life they have chosen for
themselves and their children.
Shot against the jaw-achingly beautiful backdrop of New
Zealand’s Ruahine ranges, lush greens and mist-laced horizons
become a peaceful anchor to familial drama. With knowing skill,
Tom Burnstyn’s camerawork is subtle and understated, allowing
the philosophies of Peter and Colleen to resonate with honesty
against the mountainous backdrop. As her fearless offspring
ride bareback along empty beaches, Colleen’s worry that she is
raising her children ‘to be disappointed’ by what lies outside their
childhood seems at once understandable and ridiculous.
Insightful yet unobtrusive, This Way of Life is a masterful
exploration of the Karena’s unbreakable spirits, and their
admirable refusal to compromise. JK

THE VICE GUIDE TO LIBERIA
THURSDAY 7 OCTOBER AT 8:45PM
Liberia is the fourth poorest country in the world. Its massively
turbulent recent history, various coups and horrifically brutal
civil wars have left a devastating legacy of poverty and violence.
With ex-president Charles Talyor currently on trial for war crimes
at The Hague, Shane Smith sets out to investigate the state
of the country and find out what has become of the civil war’s
remaining warlords.
Smith and his intrepid crew venture into Liberia’s capital,
and there is an overarching feeling that they are genuinely in
danger as they are often forced to flee from seemingly perilous
situations. Things get particularly hairy when the team visit a
brothel at night in ‘West Point’.
The film focuses on Joshua Blahyi, formerly a ferociously
violent warlord known as General Butt Naked (he was known for
fighting naked), now an evangelist preacher and supposedly a
reformed man. An interesting dynamic develops between Smith
and the charismatic, but clearly sociopathic Blahyi. This is intense
viewing, in keeping with Vice’s proclivity for extreme subject
matter. It is an insightful and disturbing film which ultimately
raises the question of what the future holds for Liberia. SE

WHEN THE WORLD BREAKS
TUESDAY 5 OCTOBER AT 3:45PM
When the World Breaks, follows the Great Depression that hit
America in 1929., and explores the belief that men who survive
tragedy and crisis can become stronger thanks to them.
When the World Breaks features a collage of rare footage
from the time, together with interviews and testimonies of those
who lived through it. Robert F. Boyle, Jerry Stiller, Mickey Rooney,
Richard Anderson and Paul Dooley, tell us how they found
ways to overcome the hardship when everything seemed to be
doomed and what they learnt from the experience. The director,
musician and filmmaker Hans Fjellestad says he jumped at the
chance to dig into such a formative period in American society,
art and identity and explore what turned out to be a period of
extraordinary creativity and innovation.
What this documentary proves is that those scars are a crucial
part of the human experience. In light of today’s circumstances,
in a world deeply affected by the recession, the message sent
here becomes even more relevant. Despite its subject matter,
When the World Breaks interesting, touching and even humorous
testimonies make for an uplifting and inspiring film. MP
