Can’t sleep? Dozing off when you shouldn’t? New dental device helps patients with sleep disorders People with sleep apnea or other sleep-related issues now have the option of a noninvasive treatment through our office. Instead of the traditional surgery or C-PAP machine, which many find difficult to use, Danner Dental is one of a select few dental practices that can provide patients with a specialized appliance for relief from sleep apnea. The OASYS (Oral/nasal Airway SYStem) is worn while sleeping and repositions the lower jaw to open the airway, resulting in a more comfortable and restful night of sleep. Dr. Danner recently underwent specialized training and has received certification in a field called Dental Sleep Medicine, which allows the dental and medical fields to combine their expertise to provide better solutions for patients. With the use of a custom-fitted OASYS appliance, patients are less likely to experience sleep apnea, and snoring can be alleviated or eliminated altogether. If you are generally tired and/or snore, you probably suffer from sleep apnea and should consult a physician who specializes in sleep disorders. Following a definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea, you may call us for a free consultation and explanation of the OASYS appliance. For more information, visit www.DentalSleepMed.org. dentaldetails Time for (good) sleep! Believe it or not, patients often fall asleep while in the dental chair. We like to think it’s our relaxing approach to care, but we recognize that it is sometimes due to sleep apnea. This common problem causes patients to feel generally tired and is often marked by disrupted sleep and significant snoring. The new field of Dental Sleep Medicine is offering exciting advancements in treatment, including the OASYS appliance. The first dental device approved by the FDA that treats both nasal and pharyngeal airway obstructions, the OASYS appliance is custom fit to each patient and is worn while sleeping. Because of its placement within the mouth, it repositions the mandible, therefore opening up the airway and allowing the patient to have normal, complete and restful sleep and allowing his or her loved ones to get some rest as well. I was fortunate to have the recent opportunity to meet with and learn from several pioneers in this field. Dr. Mark Abramson, the inventor of the OASYS appliance, detailed the use of this device and explained the appropriate applications for its use. Dr. John Remmers, who invented the C-PAP breathing machine, hailed the arrival of the OASYS, deeming it the best alternative for patients unable to use his own invention. These doctors’ dedication to research and finding better solutions for patients has provided me with personal insight into this new type of treatment, and I am pleased to be able to offer it here at Danner Dental. Closed Water System * Air Abrasion * Heat Sterilization * Solutions for Bad Breath I am often self-conscious about having bad breath. What can I do about it? Q. Q & A Page 2 Eliminating bad breath can boost self-confidence. Some basic tips to help prevent bad breath include: Practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least two times a day and floss once daily to remove food particles and plaque that can cause malodor. It is also beneficial to use a tongue scraper to clean bacteria from your tongue. Visit us regularly -- two to four times per year for an oral evaluation to make sure everything is healthy in your mouth. Stop smoking/chewing tobacco products. Aside from causing oral cancer and other harmful effects on your body, smoking or chewing tobacco significantly contributes to bad breath. Drink plenty of water. This will keep your mouth moist and help wash away food particles and bacteria from your mouth. We recommend a line of alcohol-free fresh breath products that use xyltol to freshen your breath by killing bacteria and neutralizing foul-smelling odors. For our patients’ convenience, we have mouth rinse, chewing gum and small purse-size spray bottles as well as other fresh breath items available in our office Smile Store. Persistent bad breath is an indication of infection, usually infection of the gum tissue. Ask for an evaluation of the health of your mouth and also a free sample of one of our fresh breath products. Summer Celebration filled with ice cream & smiles! Ice cream at a dental office? Of course! During the week of June 11, we hosted a Summer Celebration event and gave away ice cream and other prizes to everyone who stopped by our dental office. Patients could also enter a drawing for lawn chairs, beach balls and even an in-office tooth whitening! “We’re always looking for ways to show our patients how much we appreciate them, and Quinten Weber, 10, enjoys some ice cream this was a fun way to do that,” at our Summer Celebration event June 11-13. said Dr. Danner.
