in the 1940’s, a well-worn pair of danner boots served as proof
that a logger was worth his salt...
1960s
It all began in 1932.
Charles Danner opened the doors of
Danner Shoe Mfg. Company in the old
logging town of Chippewa Falls, Wis.,
with five employees to build affordable,
handcrafted work boots. The U.S. was in
the midst of the Great Depression, labor
costs were about 30 cents per hour,
and leather and other necessary raw
materials were dirt cheap. The finished
boots sold for less than $4 a pair.
1936
In his search for higher
quality boots, Charles discovers
that calked logging boots in the
Pacific Northwest sell for $10 or
more, a considerable sum. Embracing
the opportunity, he moves his family
and the Danner company west to
Portland, Ore.
1939
Charles's sons John and
Bill officially join the family business.
The two also attend classes at the
University of Portland, until
World War II breaks out and they
serve in the military.
President John F. Kennedy stresses the
importance of exercise, and seemingly
overnight, outdoor activities such as
hiking, backpacking and mountain
climbing become national fads. Danner
recognizes the growth opportunity
and becomes the only domestic
manufacturer of hiking boots.
1970
This generation of hikers prefers
extra heavy mountain boots, but
Danner instead designs a mediumweight hiker for broader appeal. The
market responds, and Danner hiking
boots become the standard for
performance, rugged durability and
craftsmanship.
1973
Heralded in Backpacker Magazine as
coming “close to being our ideal hiking
shoe,” the Danner 6490 delivers the
perfect balance of minimal break-in
with heel and toe protection. Later
models of this boot would be called
the Mountain Light and would
launch an entire collection of classic
hiking designs.
1976
1940s
As demand grows, so does Danner—
moving operations to its fourth factory
in the region and doubling production
capacity to 480 pair per day.
The war years are good to the
company. The shipyards call for

work boots, and the Danner Shoe
Mfg. Company answers. At a new
factory in North Portland, the company
increases the production of boots to up
to 240 pair a day. After serving in the
military, John goes to law school, and
Bill focuses on making boots.
Danner’s unrelenting commitment to
quality leads to the development of
construction methods to make wet feet
a thing of the past. Using GORE-TEX®
fabric, Danner is the first footwear
brand to develop and to patent a unique
way of making a truly waterproof boot.
1950s
1980
Bill hones his business skills, moving
Danner, which still serves niche
markets, to its third Northwest location
in the Portland area. He expands the
product line to include boots and
shoes, and opens the company’s
first retail store.
Danner’s devotion to comfort footwear
doesn’t stop at human feet. One pair of
size 150 boots was built for Tuy Hoa, an
elephant at the Washington Park Zoo
in Portland. The waterproof, leather
boots were crafted to facilitate the healing
of her cracked hind feet.
2010
1983
After 50 years of shoemaking, Bill
decides to sell his company to Eric
Merk, under the condition that Eric
follow the tradition of quality and
craftsmanship the Danner family
had built over the years. And he does,
adding an even stricter adherence to
quality control. Eric moves the company
again—this time to a new, larger factory
near the Portland airport.
Danner expands to build boots designed
for hunting and uniformed service
personnel, including elite members
of the U.S. Armed Forces and law
enforcement. Danner also reaches into
Asia, including Japan and Taiwan.
1992
The American Podiatric Medical
Association awards Danner boots and
Danner® Airthotic® with the APMA seal
of acceptance—yet another nod to the
comfort of Danner footwear.
1994
On March 14, Danner merges with
LaCrosse Footwear Inc. of LaCrosse,
Wis., to form a major force in the
footwear industry. Since 1897, the
LaCrosse brand has stood for premium
quality handcrafted rubber footwear.
1996
Danner becomes the first shoe
manufacturer in the U.S. to earn
ISO 9002 certification. This
international set of quality standards
helps assure customers that their Danner
boots will be made to the highest
standards for comfort, durability, support
and waterproof protection.
With the continued military
engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan,
men and women in the Marines and the
Army need a new breed of premium
protective footwear. Danner steps up,
co-developing and producing the
new standard in combat boots with
the USMC RAT and Army Combat Hiker.
The company expands again, opening
a world-class 59,000-square-foot
factory—nearly twice the size as its
previous location. Danner also opens its
first stand-alone factory store, bringing
a full-branded experience to the public
and moving its recrafting department
to this flagship location.
2012
Thirty years after entering the
Japanese market, the Danner brand
becomes recognized as one of the
most desirable American fashion
brands available. On July 5, ABC-Mart,
the largest footwear retailer in
Japan, acquires Danner with plans
to build on Danner’s rich USA-made
heritage and to grow strength in work
and outdoor markets.
2013
Danner opens two new retail stores
in Portland, returning to its 1936 roots
downtown with a heritage outdoorinspired store filled with Danner’s
premium offerings.

design and manufacture a complete
line of hiking, hunting, uniform, work
and lifestyle boots in its world-class
factory in Portland, Ore., USA.
The company also operates in many
channels around the world, including

mail-order companies, direct consumer
sales—both online and in retail
locations—and government agency and
international sales that reach Asia,
the Americas, Europe and Australia.

to manufacture a boot: to
cut corners, to streamline the
process, to produce more for
less. But there is only one way
to craft a boot with the fit,
comfort and durability of a
Danner® boot—and that's by
hand.
A man and his boots can
go a long way. And since
many Danner® boots can be
recrafted by replacing the
outsole, reworking the leather
and restitching the seams,
a man with a pair of Danner
boots can go even farther.
Introducing the
SVA PERFORMANCE SYSTEM
The SVA Performance System is designed to help you choose the perfect Danner boot.
We craft each platform with key performance features in mind. It's more than just keeping our
standards high, it’s about making sure the products we create live up to yours.
We categorize all Danner® boots within our SVA system to help consumers select the right
boot for their needs. It's an easy way to understand how each boot performs for its intended
end use and can be found on Danner boot box labels, hang tags
and other retail merchandising tools.
STITCHDOWN CONSTRUCTION
Inspired by our original
stitchdown design, Stability
boots are designed to take on
the roughest, most
rugged conditions
Once the foundation of every Danner® boot, our legendary stitchdown
construction provides a wider platform for increased stability. This
construction design begins with the upper being shaped and conformed
to the last, then flared out and cemented to the midsole. The upper and
midsole are then stitched together with heavy, interlocking thread to
create an even stronger, more durable attachment. Finally, the outsole
is cemented to the midsole/upper unit, making Danner’s stitchdown
construction one of the longest lasting, most durable and stable platform
constructions in the industry. And to add even more value, any Danner
boot built with stitchdown construction can be recrafted by our own
Danner craftsmen.
dynamic RESPONSE system
Developed for the most rugged high-altitude conditions, Danner’s
Dynamic Response platform system is engineered to provide the
protection, the response, the rigidity and the support needed when
battling ridgeline conditions of rock, jagged debris, packed snow and
serious ice. The boot rigidity and support comes from a lasting board that
runs the full length of the foot. Following this, a Pebax® framework spans
the platform to offer springboard return in the toe and heel and to provide
protection against cold conditions and rough terrain. A polyurethane heel
plate smooths the transition between the heel and toe while providing
abrasion resistance in the primary impact zones of the foot. Finally a dualdensity polyurethane midsole ensures the durability and superior shock
absorption expected in a rugged Danner platform system.

Danner® TERRA FORCE® technology is a cornerstone in our continually
evolving technology designs. Finding the balance among strength, stability and
athletic performance, Danner TERRA FORCE technology features five pristinely
crafted components that are brought together using a combination of an
extremely durable stitch construction in the forefoot and heel and a lightweight
cement construction in the arch. From the upper to the outsole, the internal
and external shank and the polyurethane midsole work together to provide a
lightweight yet stable platform.
TERRA FORCE® X
Danner® TFX® technology is an advancement in the performance characteristics
of Danner’s patented TERRA FORCE® platform. The overall X-frame design teams
with the shank for unrivaled heel-to-toe energy transfer. The X-frame also provides
additional traction and sheds excess weight. The upper is nested into the midsole
through an extremely durable stitch construction, while the exposed external shank
wraps around the arch to provide stability and support. TFX is a sleek low-profile
platform that delivers high-performance results.
TERRA FORCE® X LITE
TERRA FORCE® X Lite is an even lighter version of the high-performance,
lightweight TFX® platform. Utilizing a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)
design, we developed a shank system that offers you a lighter, faster boot. With
maximum arch support and underfoot stability, this platform is ideal for those
constantly on the move, needing support and stability with every step.
From this foundation a family was born. Today the variations on TERRA FORCE®
include the ultra-sleek TERRA FORCE® X Lite, the responsive TFX-8, ideal
for law enforcement, and the faster streamlined TFX-2, found in our newer
outdoor styles. In every generation, the original promise is upheld: Legendary
Danner® stability in a lightweight, supportive platform for all-day comfort and
performance.

The Trailguard platform is one of our lightest weight designs, delivering

EXO TECH
Danner® EXO® technology offers a revolutionary approach that delivers
durability and support in an athletic shoe design. Patented EXO® design
replaces the conventional shank system with an ultralight exoskeleton
chassis. The result is a superior boot platform that provides more support,
comfort and heel-to-toe flexibility, while reducing weight and foot fatigue.
VIA TECHNOLOGY
Danner’s patent-pending Vertical Insertion Arrestor (VIA) technology
was initially developed for high-performance footwear in a fast-roping
situation. Responding to the need for abrasion resistance and control in
the arch of the foot, we partnered with Vibram® to develop a dual-density
system that features a Vibram® V4 highly abrasion-resistant compound
in the arch of foot for extreme durability and superior inner arch grip
and control.
DANNER® COMFORT SYSTEM
Danner’s latest innovation in premium performance, the Danner® Comfort System, delivers durability, cushioning and support
in a complete package for total foot comfort. From the ground up, the technology is built around an anatomical design and
broader toe box for a responsive fit. The midsole is replaced with a lightweight, plush footbed and heel pad to maximize

BULL RUN MOC TOE
Featuring the strength and durability of Danner’s
hand-crafted, stitchdown construction, the Bull Run is
made in our Portland, Ore., factory with an unlined,
full-grain leather upper. It features a classic moc toe
design with contrasting stitch and the non-marking,
oil- and slip-resistant Danner® Wedge outsole
which won’t track debris. The well-oiled rich

CRAFTER
With its classic design and hardworking components,
the new Danner® Crafter is the model of tradition.
But behind the classic oiled nubuck leather is a work

cushioning. We built it with a wider toe box for a more

We combined Danner’s legendary durability and support
with the unmatched comfort found in the all-new
Danner® Comfort System (DCS) to build the Lookout.
This new duty offering delivers best-in-class durability,
support and cushioning right out of the box. It features
a waterproof, polishable, full-grain leather and rip-stop
nylon upper that stands up to the job and an all-new
waterproof Danner® Dry liner. The cushioned comfort
comes from a patent-pending, dual-density footbed,
combining underfoot venting for maximum airflow and
an Airthotic® heel clip for support. A wider toe box
allows for a more responsive fit, while the rugged
outsole delivers outstanding traction
and maneuverability. The side-zip
provides a fast and secure fit every
time. Available in 8" and 5.5" heights,
plus side-zip option.
TANICUS
With the same rough-out leather and rugged nylon
that you expect from Danner, we built the Tanicus
to be our lightest military boot that is theater ready.
Featuring an added layer of cushioning in the
midsole and an impact dampening heel cup, the
polyurethane footbed ensures cushioned comfort
won’t break down over time. Available with a
breathable, moisture-wicking mesh lining or the
new waterproof Danner® Dry lining. The
outsole’s pentagonal lug pattern gives you
stability in a variety of terrain.

The foundation for any shoe or boot is the last, as it determines the fit of the finished product. Lasts are milled to our exact size and shape
specifications. Unlike many other footwear manufacturers, we build our lasts to the 1/2 size, for the best possible fit. Each last is used over and
over to deliver consistency in the manufacturing process.
The key variables among the different lasts are in the overall shape, width of the toe box, and the volume (depth). At Danner, we use 17 basic lasts.
Understanding the differences of each last, as well as knowing the characteristics of your own foot, will provide a good guideline for selecting the
best fitting pair of boots.

Danner® recrafting services
A man and his boots can go a long way. And since many Danner® boots can be recrafted by replacing the outsole,
reworking the leather and restitching the seams, a man with a pair of Danner boots can go even farther.
Our craftsmen provide everything from simple part replacement and leather care to major overhauls. Danner® can only
repair boots with stitchdown construction. If your customer's boots have stitching around the entire perimeter of the
boot sole, they can be repaired. We cannot repair seriously damaged or torn leather. If you are unsure whether a boot
qualifies, please feel free to contact us. Download the Recrafting Order Form from www.danner.com and follow the
instructions. You must have Adobe Reader to print this form.
Turnaround time for Danner® Recrafting is two to four weeks, depending on the scope of the repair needed.
