VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Honeywell Aerospace
President’s Colum Challenge
The Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge is one of Arizona’s premier academic contests for
youth. Entering its 17th year, this stimulating contest allows fifth through eighth grade students the
opportunity to enhance their knowledge of space technology. The Aerospace Challenge requires
participants to develop plans for an International Lunar Base complete with a physical scale model.
More than 1200 students will participate in this contest in which they work in groups to achieve critical problem-solving, communication, team-building and decision-making skills. As a result, they
will expand their knowledge in subject areas such as math, science, social studies, language and
fine arts.
The preliminary round of competition takes place over a three-day period, Feb 8-10 2016, with the
top two teams each day advancing to the finals. Finalists will enjoy an exclusive opportunity to attend a presentation from NASA astronauts. The Aerospace Challenge winning team will earn an all
expense paid trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL, and a special on-field appearance at the 46th
Annual Fiesta Bowl in January 2017.
All the judging for the competition is performed by Honeywell employees and retirees. Please volunteer for one, two or three days. Signup deadline is early Jan 2016. Breakfast and lunch is provided. This is an opportunity for retirees to participate as well. Last year five retirees volunteered and
we would like more this year. For more details contact Keith Hughes at [email protected]

Highlights of Holiday Luncheon
We sold 75 tickets for this year’s luncheon
and almost everyone attended. This represents about a 25% increase in attendance
over last year. Rustler’s Roost was welcome
and accommodating, and many attendees
remarked how long it had been since they
were last there. Food was well prepared and
very tasty. Since Rustler’s Roost is not open
for lunch, our large group was easily accommodated.
We are happy to announce that table centerpieces were awarded to numbers 9 and 4.
Door prize winners were: Judy Townsend;
Lee Ana Kains; George Mattson; Clarisse
Percell; Jim Laird; Judy Lang; and the
Grand Prize winner was George Townsend.
Photos are below but more can be found at
the website. Submit any photos you took to
[email protected] and we
will try to get them posted also.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
Leo Buscaglia was teaching in the Department of Special Education at the University of
Southern California in the late 1960s when one of his students committed suicide. She
had been one of the sets of "kind eyeballs" he always looked for in the large auditorium, because her responses showed him that at least one student was hearing what he
said, so the news that she killed herself had a great impact on him. ["What are we doing stuffing facts into people and forgetting that they are human beings?"] This incident led him to form a non-credit class titled Love 1A. There were no grades. (How
could you potentially fail someone in this class? The class led to lectures and a manuscript loosely based on what was shared in those weekly classes. This experience
caused Mr. Buscaglia to write many warm stories about his childhood as the youngest
child of Italian immigrants. These stories provide many fable-like experiences that he
shared throughout his life, especially recounting the Christmas seasons he experienced
with his family.
Each Christmas night, after dinner and at the table, I read a Leo Buscaglia story to our
family and guests. These stories are in great demand and I couldn’t stop this tradition
if I wanted to. It’s during this time I’m reminded of one of his quotes:
“Don’t spend your precious time asking “Why isn’t the world a better place?” It will
only be time wasted. The question to ask is “How can I make it better?” To that
there is an answer.”
–
Leo Buscaglia
Without thinking about it, we as a group focus on this profound observation by Mr.
Buscaglia. The Club sponsors or supports many charitable efforts. The most recent
event sponsored by the club was our Cowboy Christmas event at Rustler’s Rooste.
Aside from being a fun gathering of old and new friends, each attendee brought a
Christmas ornament or a canned food item to give to a family in need. Your Board also shopped and spent $300 from your treasury to buy toys and clothes for this family –
a single mother with five children.
I’m certain your Board will all agree that we, as a Club, do things that make the world
around us better. For that I’m profoundly grateful for your membership and your
participation.
Wishing you all a happy and warm holiday season.
Ed Taschner

Monthly Charity News
Your Board of Directors has voted to donate $100 each month to the Scholarship Fund, and
the other $100 to local charities as usual. Per our usual process, our Holiday month’s charitable donation goes to Vista Del Camino. Club guidelines dictate that we support local
charities exclusively. A list of the charities from which the board chooses donations monthly is posted on the website. If you have a favorite charity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.
50/50 winners were Carl Baerst and Tim Cates.
A Thank You Note was received from Alzhehmer's Association.

Editor’s Corner
We continue to monitor newsletters sent via email that are not being received. We will attempt to contact you by phone or other means to ensure that we have the correct email address on file. If we are unable to obtain a correct email address, we will send your copy of
the newsletter via USPS.
The Board has reviewed the response to this year’s dues notices and although working
well, we have decided to further improve the process. Beginning in August 2016, dues
notices will be sent in a letter separate from Cliff Notes. This letter, sent to both winter
and summer addresses, will include dues owed and an opportunity to contribute to the
Scholarship Program, although dues and scholarship contributions will need to be separate checks. We will ask you to mail the entire letter back to us with requested information updates and roster requests. We thank you for your support of our process
improvements.
Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef
Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every
month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour
begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm
and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.
The history of Honeywell or an old edition of the Newsletter can be found on the GRC
webpage http://www.garrettretireesaz.com/
If there is something that you would like to see in the newsletter, or if you want to comment
on the Newsletter itself, write a letter to the editor or e-mail the information to
[email protected]! We will publish it, space available and the approval of the Board. Any
comments or claims made within the publication are solely the responsibility of the individual authors and do not necessarily express the views of Honeywell Inc. or the Directors, Officers, Staff or members of the Garrett Retirees’ Club of Arizona.

HRSC & GRC Scholarship Program
Program Updates
Are you a parent or grandparent with a student attending one of the three
State Universities? If you are, don’t forget that the Honeywell Retiree Clubs
Scholarship Foundation opened applications for the 2016-2017 Scholarship
year, on December 1, 2015.
As in the past, students attending Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU) or University of Arizona (UofA) may apply for this Scholarship through their school’s scholarship network. This year, students may also
apply through our own website (Scholarships). The Scholarship page contains
complete information on the Scholarship, as well as the application.
We would also like to remind everyone that donations to our Scholarship fund
are now tax deductible. We hope that all of our members take the challenge
and help us support the many bright and worthy students that apply for a Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship each year. If you would like to make a contribution, you can send a check payable to Honeywell Retiree Scholarship, in
care of our Treasurer, Gwen Scheetz, or contact any of our Board members.

January Speaker
Our speaker for the January 6 Meeting will be Dennis Flynn. He started this program in 1990
under the name of Christmas in April to provide free home repairs to our less fortunate neighbors. In April in 1991 we did 26 homes in the Garfield Neighborhood in downtown Phoenix
and have never looked back. We now do the same thing every spring but also have a Senior
Fall Prevention Program and an Arizona Ramp Project and the Rock & Roll Paint-a-thon along
with numerous Corporate Special Events throughout the year.

MEET HAILEY DAVENPORT
A SCHOLARSHIP WINNER FROM UofA
It’s hard to believe that I am a senior in the Biomedical Engineering program at the University
of Arizona! With only one and a half semesters
left until graduation it has finally been time for
me to face the possibilities of what to do in the
“real world.” I have always had an affinity for
medicine but never thought medical school
was a realistic option for me based on cost and
length of schooling. After recently having the
opportunity to shadow an emergency department doctor, I realized that my greatest dream
is becoming a doctor. Completing an engineering degree has helped me to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, which I
think I would be able to apply well as a medical
doctor.
This is my second year to receive the Honeywell retirees’ club scholarship and I could not
be more grateful. The scholarship has not only taken off some of the great burden that is
college tuition, but also has allowed me to resign from my demanding part time job
which didn’t apply to my major, where I was working 20-30 hours per week on top of taking 18 hours of classes. I now have more time to focus on my studies and focus on the research I am involved in. I currently work in a research lab at the university which focuses
on how fetal development affects the onset of metabolic diseases later in life. Working
here has also impacted my decision to pursue medicine. I have been applying to Biomedical engineering jobs for after I graduate in May and plan to work for a year during
the process of applying for medical school. I am extremely excited about the prospect
of going to medical school and thanks to the support I have received from my family,
scholarships, as well as from the retirees club; my dream now seems very attainable.

Our Wishes for You in 2016
Stay out of trouble
Aim for greater heights
Stay focused on your job
Exercise and maintain good health
Practice teamwork
Rely on your trusted partner to watch your
back. Take your time trusting others.
Rest and relax
Save for rainy days
Always take out time to smile
Realize that nothing is impossible
Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten
minutes, come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller?
Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met
yet...
I don't trip over things, I do random gravity checks!
I don't need anger management. I need people to stop pissing me off!
Old age is coming at a really bad time!
When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment... now, as a
grown up, it just feels like a small vacation!
The biggest lie I tell myself is... "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it."
Lord grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the
courage to change the things I can & the friends to post my bail when I
finally snap!
I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights". I'm just very wise.
My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance to idiots that needs work.
Teach your daughter how to shoot, because a restraining order is just a
piece of paper.
If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees.
The kids text me "plz" which is shorter than please. I text back "no"
which is shorter than "yes".
I'm going to retire and live off of my savings. Not sure what I'll do that
second week.
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?
I've lost my mind and I'm pretty sure my wife took it!
Even duct tape can't fix stupid... but it can muffle the sound!
Why do I have to press one for English when you're just gonna transfer
me to someone I can't understand anyway?
Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.
Oops! Did I roll my eyes out loud?
At my age "Getting lucky" means walking into a room and remembering
what I came in there for.
Chocolate comes from cocoa which is a tree... that makes it a plant which
means... chocolate is Salad!!!
