SUSTAINABLE SAN JUAN SUSTAINABLE SAN JUAN
SAN JUAN 2013 1st JUNE / 30th JUNE WELCOME TO THE MOST MARVELLOUS NIGHT IN THE WORLD. 24 San JUAN for little ones SAN FOR LITTLE ONES SUSTAINABLE SAN JUAN 7 th th June June BONFIRE NIGHT IN THE ENCHANTED CITY page page CONCERTS 1st June 2013 / 30th June 2013 Alejandro Sanz The artist thrills audiences with a show packed with state-of-the-art technology. This sell-out tour will be visiting A Coruña on 15th June to the delight of his legions of fans. 15 June th Coliseum 22:30 p.m. Alejandro Sanz is back in town with his tour ‘La música no se toca’, named after his latest hit album and which has got off to a great start. ‘No me compares’ hit the top of the iTunes lists in 18 countries and topped the Spanish and international radio charts even before the album was released in September last year. The same happened with the second and third singles ‘Se vende’ and ‘Mi marciana’ which reached No.1 in several countries. The rapturous reception ‘La música no se toca’ received is also reflected in his album sales (five times platinum in Spain and the top selling album by a Spanish language singer in 2012) and his packed concert tour, with every date a sell-out since it hit the road in Mexico. This success is set to be repeated on 15th June in A Coruña’s Coliseum venue, where the audience will be treated to a fabulous show on a threedimensional stage that interacts with the music and the public. Bipolar Fest The Bipolar fest is a fabulous mix of pop, rap, rock and singer-song writing. A unique blend of musical styles led by Jacobo Paz y Dos mundos. Almost forty local musicians, Ferrol-born singer songwriter Al Vila, 11007 from Cadiz, Durgin – born in Jaén but resident in A Coruña, KNS from the Galician town of Ortigueira and O Neno da Rúa will come together in what is set to be a unique musical event against the picturesque backdrop of Parque de Santa Margarita. Bipolar is a melting pot of styles as well as a concept associated with the underlying themes of the lyrics. The musicians behind the Bipolar Fest work to overcome their difficulties and help to build a future based on hope through the songs they perform. An event with a difference and definitely one not to be missed. 21st y 22nd June Parque de Santa Margarita 8:00 p.m. z o Pa Jacob BIPOLAR features: JACOBO PAZ Y DOS MUNDOS / SEISSENSEIS / CESAR DECENTI / AMBITO KINITOH / YUL / FORNI / ARTE EN TINTA / AL VILA / 11007 / KABO NORTE SQUAD / O NENO DA RÚA / JESSI / DURGIN / DEJOTA TRAPE / PABLO AÑÓN / REVOLUJOIN / 3 ASES. Hombres G During the concert in Plaza de María Pita the band will prove they haven’t lost a drop of the rebellious pop spirit that made its mark on thousands of teenagers in the eighties and the generations that followed. 21st June Plaza de María Pita 10:00 p.m. There can’t be many people who haven’t danced or at least sung along to an Hombres G song sometime in their life. ‘Devuélveme a mi chica’, ‘Marta tiene un marcapasos’ or ‘Suéltate el pelo’ are just a few of the classics we’ll have the chance to hear and join in with at their concert in A Coruña on 21st June. It’s been 30 years since Hombres G released their first single – ‘Milagro en el Congo’ / ‘Venezia’, but the ripples of that authentic social phenomenon can still be felt – and heard - today. Success came as a surprise to David Summers, Rafael Gutiérrez, Da- niel Mezquita and Javier Molina who suddenly packed concert halls, literally brought the traffic to a standstill wherever they went and sent their hoards of female fans into a frenzy. Their simple, rebellious pop rock style gradually evolved as the band moved into a more personal, introspective vein. To date they have released a total of twelve albums, the latest of which – ‘En la playa’ - features versions of some of their greatest hits performed as duets with other top Spanish artists such as Dani Martín, Miguel Bosé or Ana Torroja. THE NIGHT OF SAN JUAN 23rd-24th June 2013 Calle Avenida de la Marina Matadero ACCESS TO MATADERO BEACH ACCESS TO ORZÁN BEACH ACCESS TO RIAZOR BEACH Naturally, no San Juan celebration is complete without the burning of the falla sculpture. In keeping with the tongue-in-cheek humour that has always characterised this wooden sculpture destined to be devoured by the flames, illustrator Santy Gutiérrez has come up with a design depicting the local football team – known affectionately as ‘el Dépor’ -literally ‘playing with fire’, the local government spokespersons on board a train and the Mayor, Carlos Negreira, standing on the balcony of the City Hall. Jardines Orzán FIREWORK LAUNCH AREA BURNING OF THE FALLA Just a few minutes before the sculpture starts to burn, a fabulous firework display provides a dazzling welcome for the summer solstice. And finally, on the stroke of midnight, the Meigas set fire to the huge bonfire, marking the official start to San Juan. The entire city will be ablaze with celebrations! And to start ‘hotting things up’, the music and dancing will get underway at 9.30 p.m. with big band Cinema, and Panorama also joining in later on. Both bands will provide the music that will keep us dancing until the early hours of the morning. The San Juan floats – including one carrying the firewood from around the world - will make their way along the Sea Promenade, accompanied by lively performances from the Manicómicos theatre group. This year the floats have been designed by art director Suso Montero, who created the sets for the film ‘The Carpenter’s Pencil’ and for the popular Galician TV series ‘Mareas Vivas’. The float carrying the Meiga Mayor or Queen Witch represents fire and the sea, whilst the theme of the float designed for the Junior Queen Witch is based on the idea that fire does away with the old, giving rise to the new. The mosteagerly awaited moment comes when the flames devour the wooden falla sculpture, marking the start of San Juan. Health, safety and environment recommendations. This is a night when more than ever we must think of others, bearing in mind the need for good public behaviour and not to do anything that may prevent public services from operating normally. You must not hold any events that have not been specifically authorised. In addition, you must maintain optimum conditions of health and hygiene and remember that all public spaces must be in perfect condition for use the following day. General health, safety and environmental recommendations. Special recommendations for bonfires on the city beaches · Specific authorisation is required for bonfires and sardine barbecues held on the streets or in public spaces. · Three-piece suites, sofas and furniture in general · Bonfires should be lit from 11 p.m. onwards on 23rd June and must be fully extinguished by 6 a.m. the following morning. · You are reminded that the sale of alcoholic drinks in all stores, vending machines and by street sellers or any other form is strictly forbidden between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. Likewise, all street sellers require specific authorisation. · Moving urban waste containers from their corresponding site is an offence that may be sanctioned with fines of up to 3,000 euros. · The burning of plastics, foam rubber, tyres, aerosols and any inflammable or explosive product or materials containing plastic is forbidden, due to the toxic gases they emit when burnt. · The use of plastic bottles is strongly recommended instead of glass. Glass bottles are strictly forbidden on the beach. · Those responsible for authorised bonfires that include a sardine barbecue must remove all litter and rubbish from the area. Special bins will be provided for this purpose: organic waste must be placed in the green containers and plastics and packaging in the yellow container. that may emit toxic gases when burnt are strictly forbidden on the beaches. Likewise no tyres or any other items classified as toxic or hazardous are allowed. Large signs will be posted at the beach accesses reminding the general public of these regulations, and guards will be on duty at these areas from the morning of 23rd June. · The wood used to build small bonfires on the beaches must be free from nails, screws and any other sharp elements. The presence of these items on the sands may cause serious injuries to beach users on the days following the event. For the same reason, the use of glass bottles is also strictly prohibited. · Moving urban waste containers situated on the streets is strictly forbidden. · You are also reminded that in accordance with the Coastal Law, any behaviour that affects the conditions of cleanliness, health and hygiene of beaches and public bathing areas is punishable with fines of up to 6,010.12 euros. · Bars for the sale of alcoholic drinks may not be installed on the beach or on the Sea Promenade. Authorisation has only been granted to the Hogueras de San Juan Organising Committee for the installation of a marquee for dancing . Likewise, the distributors of beverages or any other types of products are forbidden from accessing the Sea Promenade and beaches, unless they have obtained specific prior authorisation. · Beach users must collect their waste and place it in the nearest containers on the Sea Promenade or leave it in a tied bag on the beach for collection by the municipal service. This will enable you to recycle the plastic bags brought from home and will help the street cleaners with their task of preparing the beaches for use the following day. · The beaches must be cleared by 6 a.m., when the municipal cleaning services will start their work so that the beaches are in optimum conditions of health and safety for visitors that day. Prior to this deadline, the bonfires must be completely extinguished. From this time on, access to be beaches will be strictly forbidden in order to facilitate the cleaning process. As in previous years, the aim is for the beaches of Riazor and Orzán to reopen to the public by mid-morning. · A special security service will monitor access to the beaches of Orzán and Riazor in order to guarantee compliance with all these regulations and recommendations and to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. · Chemical toilets will be installed on the Sea Promenade at the accesses to Orzán and Riazor beaches. Safety TIPS General recommendations - Do not use glass bottles. - Do not use the waste containers to carry items. - The sale of alcoholic beverages, the installation of beach bars and street selling is strictly forbidden. Other safety recommendations 1. Building a bonfire. Do NOT build bonfires close to waste containers, homes, glass, vehicles, gas pipes, electricity cables, vegetation, fences and any objects that may catch fire. The numbers for the emergency services are as follows: Fire Service 080 Local Police 092 National Police 091 SOS Galicia 112 Medical emergencies 061 Fires are strictly forbidden in woodland. 2. Materials for bonfires. Take care with what you burn. Use materials that leave embers, preferably wood. Build a small bonfire and gradually add any material you have left over. Do not burn paper or fabric; the wind may carry them up into the air. Do not use drums, tins or sprays that may explode, or tyres or plastics which emit polluting substances. Even though it may be slower and less spectacular, you should light the bonfire in several places. Never use petrol or any other inflammable liquids or accelerating fluids to light your bonfire as these can cause serious injuries. If you build a bonfire with logs, cover the ground with at least 10 cm of soil or sand over a surface that extends for more than 1 metre from the base of the fire. If it is windy, you are advised to leave the bonfire until next year to avoid a possible tragedy. 3. Recommendations for bonfires. Close all windows and balconies to prevent sparks or fireworks from entering homes. Take in any clothes lines on terraces. Remember to keep a distance of at least 15 metres from parked cars. Make sure you do not tread on the embers when jumping over the bonfire. When jumping over the bonfires remember that you are not trying to break a record: jump over small bonfires where the flames are low. “Set an example for children”. If your clothing catches fire, DO NOT RUN, roll on the ground. 080 We work hard to ensure you have an enjoyable San Juan. If you have any queries about the safety of your bonfire, call the Fire Service. Dial 080 and we will be happy to answer your questions. If you see someone whose clothing has caught fire, try to cover them with a blanket or another non-fibre garment. Alcohol and fire do not mix: if you drink less you’ll have more fun If you are the victim of an accident or burn, call the emergency services on 080, 092, 091, 112 or 061 Keep some items to extinguish the fire close at hand at all times (buckets of water, hosepipes, fire extinguishers, etc.). Keep an eye on the bonfire until it is completely extinguished and dampen the embers to prevent any accidents. Do not empty the embers and ash into the containers until they have cooled completely. If you have built a bonfire on the beach, collect all your rubbish and place it in the special containers, as the beach will be open to the public the next day. For the first time ever, we’re launching a pilot scheme for the large-scale distribution of wood for ecofriendly bonfires. What’s more, the Environment Department has set up a special system so that everyone can enjoy the beach on 24th. The objective is to encourage everyone to place their litter from the bonfires and celebrations in the specially designated bins. That way, the most marvellous night in the world, will also become the cleanest. SAN JUAN FOR LITTLE ONES A fun-filled day awaits the little ones in Plaza de María Pita in a space reserved exclusively for them. Puppets, giant-headed characters, theatre, magic, circus acts, bouncy castles and games…the little ones are in luck: throughout the month of June every district in the city will form a fabulous backdrop for activities designed especially with them in mind. 24th June Plaza de María Pita 12 noon But the greatest fun of all is undoubtedly to be had on 24th June in Plaza de María Pita when the activities will include concerts by the children’s group ‘Mamá Cabra’, ‘Tic Tac’ (Pablo Díaz) and ‘A nena e o grilo’. Children will also have the chance to dance with ‘Velocíclopes’, ‘Os Bolechas’ and to the rhythmic sounds of ‘Odaiko’. And in between all this, a host of other activities including workshops where they can make musical instruments, toys and puppets, as well as a play house, guarantee that there won’t be an “I’m bored” to be heard!
