It is the main distributor of clay handicrafts, products to Candomblé rituals, plus fruits, vegetables, meat, clothes, and other products. Here, workers are supplying a truck with oranges that will be distributed to other regions. The woman is part of a seven strong lending group engaged in soap production. The group was given a grant for the mixing machine and press by the local church, and a loan for raw materials and mixing trays by the local microfinance institution Action Grace Divine (AGD). A microcredit initiative that took off about 17 years ago has empowered 24,412 women in this block about 80 kms away from Kolkata, transforming their economic and social status. After taking out a loan from the savings group, Marco was able to expand his business by hiring other fisherman and focusing on expanding his home garden.
