Boy I love magic. Maybe you’ve seen some good magic tricks (not the ones I attempt). Things are not
supposed to appear and disappear. Yet for a brief moment it looks like that’s happened, you seem to
witness it with your own eyes, and it fills you with a sense of wonder and joy. Almost instinctively we
respond: “Do that again! How did you do that?” For me, magic is a wonderful means of recreation.
Well, today, the Feast of the Epiphany is a good day to talk about magic, because today we meet the
biblical Magi. St. Matthew tells us that they come from the East or the land of sunrise. They present
themselves as knowledgeable men because they looked to the skies and studied the stars. But we also
call them wise men, because in humility they recognized they did not possess all knowledge. They
sought the knowledge of the Jewish scribes and sought the newborn King of the Jews. They are good men, unlike other
biblical magi who were deceivers and manipulators of knowledge and people. St. Paul will call the magus Bar-Jesus a
son of the devil and an enemy of righteousness (Acts 13:10).
This is very different from the Magi who seek Jesus. What happened when they found him? “They prostrated themselves
and did him homage…They opened their treasures and offered him gifts.” (Matthew 2:11) When these Magi meet Jesus,
they bow down before our Lord and give him what they have. These Magi teach me how to be a magician, and I think
they can teach us all how to spend our time of recreation.
When I was a kid first learning magic, there was the usually excitement of discovering something new. If we find
something new that we love, we usually binge on it. It soaks up our time and our thoughts and our resources. I loved
buying new tricks, just to figure out the secret. It was a way to indulge my curiosity. Some of the tricks I would actually
practice and perform for others. And I actually made some money as a part-time magician.
But left to ourselves, we fall first into curiosity, then into self-indulgence and eventually into sin. Thankfully the
newborn king is called Jesus because he will save his people from their sins. So we have to talk to him, even about our
free time. “Lord, I have this free time. How do you want me to use it? What do you want me to watch, what show, what
movie? What game to you want me to play? Who do you want me to spend time with? What do you want us to talk
about? How much time do you want me to spend?”
We rarely have these conversations with Christ. Many times it’s because we know we are wandering from our Lord and
we don’t want him to change our route. Like Herod, we would rather be king instead of letting Christ de-throne us. It
troubles us greatly to have a new king. Let Christ be king of the rest of the world, just not my free time. These are not
trivial matters; there is much waiting to be saved by Christ in almost all the media we absorb each day. He is counting
on you to fight with him, instead of yielding without a fight to the deceivers and manipulators. Is your free time bringing
your closer to Christ or away from him?
The Magi, the Wise men, can show us how to use our recreation time wisely. All our time and all our talents and all our
treasure must be brought to the child Jesus. We must bow down to do this, placing our will into his hands with great
humility and trust. Our very lives and our possessions—all of them—must be gifts for the Lord. He is the only One able
to heal them and save them and draw from them whatever we need to travel through this world to our heavenly home.
We can’t get to heaven by our own way; we have to follow a new way, his way, because Christ himself is the Way.
(Matthew 2:12, John 14:6) Don’t get sad when you hear that, because with Christ we find joy. We can become
overjoyed like the Magi when we find Christ.
These days, I rarely have time for much magic, but when I do, it helps me relax a bit and get ready for the next day. And
now I love to see the wonder and the joy a good magic trick brings to other people. It is a flash of wonder, reminding me
of the star of wonder that rested above the Lord. It is a brief moment of joy that can point to the eternal joy that only
Christ can offer. So ask our Lord to work a little miracle with your free time. You’ll be overjoyed to discover what he
can do.

LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES
“Appearances can be deceiving,” as the saying goes. As
we celebrate the epiphania, the “appearing” of the eternal
Word of God on earth, this is still true.
What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he
wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years,
they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with
hope for the day when God’s glory would shine on them.
How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God
came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives.
We have many expectations about how the divine
presence will appear among us. But we can also set
ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine
glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for
the star, forgetting that the star is not the divine sign, the
babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon
the true appearance of God’s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ.

News from
Celebrating the Season
During our journey through Advent, our students in
Preschool through 5th grade sang and our beginning,
intermediate and advanced bands performed in our
Christmas concert. They were directed by our music
teacher, Mrs. Kirsten Currie and band director, Miss
Brittany Rennels. The children performed poems
complete with hand motions or sang beautiful
Christmas songs to families and friends. Our bands
played a collection of Christmas music even
combining one song with a poem! We had so much
fun watching our 80 preschoolers stay “on stage”
while reciting their poem and listened with excitement
and awe at the talents of all our young students. We
enjoyed the solo parts sung by many of our 2nd, 3rd,
and 4th graders. The finale was performed by our 5th
grade class which resulted in a standing ovation and
lighting the Christmas spirit in the hearts of everyone
in the church! We hope you had a blessed Christmas
and we give you our wishes for a Happy New Year!

Epiphany is Manifestation Day. It is the day
for sharing. It is another day for gifts. It is the
Twelfth Day of Christmas. The gift, clearly, is
Christ Jesus the Lord. The gift, clearly, is given
not just to me, not just to “us”, but also to
“them”.
How can I be like God today and manifest some
goodness and grace to both us and them?

BUSCAR EN EL LUGAR CORRECTO
“Las apariencias engañan” dice el refrán. Al celebrar
la epifanía, la manifestación del Verbo de Dios eterno en
la tierra, el refrán sigue siendo cierto.
¡Qué sublime premonición debe haber sentido Isaías
al escribir las palabras que hoy escuchamos! Por cuatrocientos años, cómo habrán llenado los corazones del pueblo de Israel con esperanzas de que llegaría el día en que
la gloria de Dios se derramaría sobre ellos. ¡Qué desilusionados deben haberse sentido algunos cuando la gloria
de Dios les llegó en una vida humana de las más bajas y
humildes!
Tenemos muchas expectativas de cómo la presencia
divina va a manifestarse entre nosotros. Pero también
podemos exponernos, por culpa de esas expectativas, a
perder de vista la gloria divina cuando se nos aparece de
verdad. Nos entretenemos buscando la estrella, y nos
olvidamos que la estrella no es la señal divina, sino el
bebé. Puede que tengamos que persistir en el camino antes de llegar a encontrarnos con la apariencia real de la
gloria de Dios en nuestra vida: Jesucristo.
