It is a joy to be at St. Matthew’s and I thank everyone for the kind welcome that you have given me in my first two weeks here at the parish. I very much look forward to getting to know you, both at the parish, in the religious education classes and at the school. I thought that you might like to know a bit more about me. I am the first of four children. I grew up in Lisle with my parents, Steve and Debbie, and my siblings, Kristi, David and Jack. I grew up in St. Joan of Arc parish in Lisle. I attended public school in Lisle until my sophomore year in high school, when I transferred to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), in Aurora. After IMSA, I spent two years at the University of Illinois in Champaign, where I studied Fr. Michael Pawlowicz economics, political science and French. My goal had been to later go to law school and then either become a judge or enter into the foreign service as a diplomat. It was at U of I that I began to think about entering seminary, with help from friends and priests at the Newman Center. I was really enjoying my studies, but I was no longer so sure about what I wanted to do with my life. Around that time, I had broken up with my girlfriend of 4 years and was starting – for the first time – to ask God what He wanted me to do with my life. I remember a friend telling me, “That’s what you go to seminary for – to ask God what He wants. If He wants you to be a priest, great. If not, great, you’ll go home and be a better father because of it.” That sounded wonderful to me. So I asked the vocations director, Fr. Burke Masters, for an application to seminary. It had not been my intention to be a priest going in, but I wanted to learn how to pray, to learn more about what it really means to be Catholic, and to give space for God to speak to me. As it turns out, God did have plans for me. I spent two years at St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, MN, and got my BA in philosophy there. Then, quite unexpectedly, the Bishop sent me to complete my theological studies in the Eternal City. I spent four years in Rome, living at the Pontifical North American College (America’s seminary in Rome) and studying at the Jesuit Pontifical Gregorian University. My fourth year in Rome, I was ordained a deacon in St. Peter’s Basilica and, later that year, returned to Joliet to be ordained a priest by Bishop Conlon in 2013. The first three years of my priesthood, I was assigned to St. Mary’s Parish in West Chicago. Two months ago, I received the phone call that I would be moving to join you here in Glendale Heights. You might notice that I will be out for a month from July 11-August 12. I’m currently continuing my studies parttime at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, to earn an advanced degree in theology called a License, which would allow me to teach theology at a Catholic university or seminary. I’m still a couple steps behind Fr. Jerome, who is working on his doctorate. I’m very excited to be here and look forward to all the many graces that the Lord Jesus has in store for us during my time here. I thank you in advance for the patience that you will have with me as I learn new names, faces and families. May God bless you abundantly. It was only after Miss Collins went on a morning neighborhood patrol that she found out the real reason for Matt’s tardiness. Thump, thump, thump, came the wheelchair down the stairs. It was Matt, steadying Shawnetta as he helped lower her down the stairs and then push her to the corner bus stop. “She’s a girl in my parish youth group,” Matt explained to Miss Collins. There are many ways to describe Matt’s actions—a random act of kindness, making a difference one person at a time. Jesus would understand. When the lawyer correctly identified the good Samaritan as the one who had treated the injured man with compassion, Jesus said simply, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Just like everybody else.
